I didn't cry when I learned I was the parent of a mentally handicapped child. I just sat still and didn't say anything.

The symbolic Burmese leader, also a Nobel Peace Prize winner, put the skeptics and the cynics(愤世嫉俗) to shame. To those who said nonviolent resistance could not defeat a vicious armed opponent, she seemed to say "just watch."

Following the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., she endured a long struggle against the pitiless military rulers of Myanmar. She gained international support for economic approval that helped persuade the generals to loosen their control, leading to elections in 2015 and an overwhelming victory for her National League for Democracy. She remains a global symbol of peaceful resistance.

TuYouyou

It's a tough challenge to find a single human being who may be responsible for saving as many lives. The Chinese pharmacologist TuYouyou, one of three winners of this year's Nobel Prize for Medicine, took a different route in attacking one of the world's biggest killers, malaria.

Research into ancient Chinese texts led her to discover the compounds that help prevent a disease that still kills about half a million people every year, transmitted by mosquitoes in water-logged jungles. The discovery has resulted in medication that has saved millions of lives.

How sharks navigate the vast and seemingly featureless ocean has long been a mystery. Now there?s evidence they may follow their noses.

Sharks rely on their sense of smell to help chart a path through the ever-shifting waters of the deep seas, according to a new study.

Scientists have supposed that the animals navigate by monitoring smell clues or the Earth?s magnetic field, but no one knew for sure.

In new experiments near San Diego, scientists ferried wild leopard sharks about 6 miles (10 kilometers) away from their preferred habitats, fitted them with tracking devices, and stuffed some of the animals' noses with cotton balls.

Just 30 minutes after being released facing the wrong way, sharks with full use of their smells made a corrective U-turn and then headed straight back to shore,” says study leader Andrew Nosal, a researcher at the Scripps Institution o f Oceanography ,California. Sharks with stuffed noses, meanwhile, “appeared lost," wandering aimlessly and swimming more slowly than those that could smell freely.

To test sharks' sense of direction, Nosal and colleagues captured several dozen leopard sharks, a small species found along the coast from Washington State to northern Mexico.

After blocking some of the animals' noses, the scientists then took the animals on a cruise to deeper waters before slipping them, safe and unharmed, back into the sea. Even the sharks with plugged noses made it partway back to shore before their tracking devices fell off, the scientists report in the January 6 issue of the journal PLOS ONE. But those with unplugged noses “took very straight paths" toward home.Nosal supposes the sharks likely sniffed out chemical molecules found in higher and higher doses nearer to land.

Other scientists, however, remain unconvinced.

Maybe the animals with plugged noses “were confused by the fact that they had something stuffed in their nos e,” says Kim Holland, a marine biologist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

It?s also unlikely the animals were following a smell that grew stronger closer to land, adds Jayne Gardiner, a sensory biologist at the New College of Florida.

Perhaps the sharks were smelling something from the direction of the land that drew their attention and then followed other clues, such as water temperature or light levels, she says.

Animals that couldn?t smell a thing still turned toward the beach, which “suggests so mething else is really guiding them,” she says.

Study leader Nosal responds that sharks with cotton-stuffed nose willingly eat, suggesting that a congested nose doesn?t upset them much.

He agrees that sharks use a variety of markers to find their way, “bu t the point is [smell] participates in navigation," he says.

"Our study was only the first step in solving this mystery.”

"Why do we have to learn all this dumb stuff?"

Of all the complaints and questions I have heard from my students during my years in the classroom, this was the one most frequently asked. I would answer it by telling the following legend.

One night a group of nomads (游牧民) were preparing to retire for the evening when suddenly they were surrounded by a great light. They knew they were in the presence of a godly being. With great expectation, they awaited a heavenly message of great importance that they knew must be especially for them.

Finally, the voice spoke, "Gather as many pebbles (鹅卵石) as you can. Put them in your bags. Travel a day?s journey and tomorrow night will find you glad and it will find you sad."

The nomads shared their disappointment and anger with each other. They had expected the inspiration of a great universal truth that would enable them to create wealth, health and purpose for the world. But instead they were given a silly task that made no sense to them at all. However, the memory of the brilliance of their visitor caused each one to pick up a few pebbles and store them in their bags while voicing their displeasure.

They traveled a day?s journey and that night while making camp, they reached into their bags and discovered every pebble they had gathered had become a diamond. They were glad they had diamonds. They were sad they had not gathered more pebbles.

It was an experience I had with a student, whom I shall call Alan, early in my teaching career that illustrated the truth of that legend to me.

When Alan was in the eighth grade, he majored in "trouble" with a minor in "suspensions (停学)". He had studied how t o be a bully and was getting his master?s degree in "thievery".

Every day I had my students memorize a quotation from a great thinker. As I called roll, I would begin a quotation. To be counted present, the student would be expected to finish the thought.

"Alice Adams —…There is no failure except...?"

"…In no longer trying.? I?m present, Mr. Schlatter."

So, by the end of the year, my young pupils would have memorized 150 great thoughts.

"People nowadays know the price of everything and the value of nothing."

"No pains, no gains."

"If you can conceive it, and believe it, you can achieve it."

No one complained about this daily routine other than Alan — right up to the day he was expelled (开除) and I lost touch with him for five years. Then one day, he called. He was in a special program at one of the neighboring colleges and had just finished parole (假释).

He told me that after being sent to juvenile hall (少管所) and finally being shipped off to the California Youth Authority for his wrong doings, he had become so disgusted with himself that he had taken a razor blade and cut his wrists.

He said, "You know what, Mr. Schlatter, as I lay there with my life running out of my body, I suddenly remembered that quote you made me write 20 times one day." There is no failure except in no longer trying." Then it suddenly made sense to me. As long as I was alive, I wasn?t a failure, but if I allowed myself to die, I would most certainly die a failure. So with my remaining strength, I called for help and started a new life."

At the time he had heard the quotation, it was a pebble. When he needed guidance in a moment of crisis, it had become a diamond. And so it is to you I say, gather all the pebbles you can, and you can count on a future filled with diamonds.

This is the first time that I had been away from home, so I find it hard to live here. How I wish I could turn Lucy, who once gave me much help! I had trouble with my study in Grade 9.
