If there is any single factor that makes for success in living, it is the ability to be benefited by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyze defeat and actually learn something from it in this next undertaking. Wrongly take defeat for failure and you are sure indeed to fail. For it isn’t defeat that makes you fail; it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.

Defeats are nothing to be afraid of. They are common incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it, analyze it and learn why you failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to get rid of its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing can cause within us such a strong wish to succeed. If you let a baby grasp a stick and try to pull it away, he will hold it more and more tightly until his whole weight is hung up. It is this same reaction that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you make full use of the power which defeat gives, you can complete with it far more than you are able to.

44. What does the author know?

A. He knows at least several examples of success.

B. He knows every success in life.

C. He knows every success that has been achieved by man.

D. It’s not referred to in the passage.

B. orders you to mix defeat with failure

C. wants you to wrongly take defeat for failure

D. warns you not to wrongly take defeat for failure

47. What does the author advise one to do with the power which defeat gives?

A. One should explain it.

B. One should examine it.

C. One should use it to win success.

D. One should know its usefulness.

D

It’s not the flashiest car in the world. Not even close. But the 1971 Volkswagen named Helios can do something most cars can’t: run on solar energy ---- e nergy from the sun’s light and heat!

Joshua Beehtold, 14, and the other students at the Riverside School in Lyndonwille, Vermout, worked many months to get Helios ready for the 1999 American Tour de Sol(“Sol” is the Latin word for “Sun”). They named their car after Helios, the sun god in Greek mythology.(神话).

The 4-year-old Tour de Sol encourages the use of “green”, or environmentally friendly, cars to

help reduce pollution and save energy. It’s not a race. Cars are judged on fuel efficiency(耗油量) rather than speed. In the week-long event, 44 cars took the 340-mile tour Waterbury, Connecticut, to Lake George, New York. Of the 23 student cars, Helios was the only one built by middle school students.

A teacher drove Helios, but the children talked with people wherever they stopped along the road. “That was my favorite part, ” says Anna Browne, 15. “We explained how the car runs.”

Due in part to old, inefficient batteries(电池), Helios finished fourth---- out of four---- in its kind, the sun-powered class. “We were there for the fun of it, ” Anna says. “We’re proud of Helios, ”says Ariel Gleicher, 14. “It’s a car that’s good for the environment.”

48. What is special about the car Helios in the text?

A. It was built by middle school students.

B. It has an attractive design.

C. It was made in 1971

D. It won the fourth prize

49.How many sun-powered cars took in the race?

Sharing Housework

Last Saturday morning, I went out with my football. I had planned to play football with my friends. I saw my mother was getting ready to wash some clothes. I thought, “How hard mum is w orking! She must be very tired. ” so I decided to give up my plan and to help mum with the washing. While I was washing, my friend Tim came to invite me to play football. I refused and continued washing. It was hard work for me, for I had seldom done such housework, but I knew better what mum had done for me. Nearly two hours later, mum came back from shopping. When she saw what I had done, she was so pleased that she praised me. I felt proud of myself, too.

I think our parents are working hard for us children, and we should do something in return.
