Reading is the key to school success like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity (自动性)”.
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase (短语). With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount (数量) of time a child spends reading , not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable (适合) for your level. If you read aloud with
expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.

七选五解题思路、方法与步骤 1. 解题思路 考生应首先从文章的篇章结构和段落结构入手，弄清文章的基本框架（脉络）和每个段落中各类句子的功能和各句子间的逻辑关系。从篇章结构上看，该题均采用了说明文，沿用了“总—分—（总）”这一篇章结构；从段落结构上看，总述部分的段落往往会先引 入话题，然后点明所要说明的对象或范畴，在引入话题和点明所要说明的对象或范畴之间有时会出现表顺承或转折关系的过渡句或注释句；分别说明的段落多采用主旨句——解释说明性的句子——总结句来安排段落，即段首出现一个主旨句，接着围绕主旨句进一步展开说明，最后段末有时会出现一个总结概括性的句子与首句相照应。段落内句子之间存在并列、重复、转折、解说、因果等关系。 2. 解题方法 (1) 利用篇章结构确定选项。说明文中点明文章主旨的句子通常会在文章的首段，通过快速浏览文章的首段和其它各段的首句就可以大致看出一篇说明文的基本结构，如果是“总—分—（总）”式的行文结构，除首（尾）段以外的其它段落的首句就会呈现出一种 平行并列的关系，甚至句式结构都相同；另外，如果文章中包含标题、段落小标题、黑体句、数字编号或项目符号等，考生也可以利用这些信息来理清文章的脉络。一般而言，“七选五”阅读填空题中会有1-2个题涉及到主旨句，考生根据文章其他段落的主旨句便 能推断出文章后的七个选项中哪些是主旨句，哪些是细节过渡衔接句，哪些是解释说明句。 (2) 利用段落结构及段内句子间的逻辑关系确定选项。说明文的段落通常按照“主旨句—解释说明句—（总结句）”这样的顺序来组织段落。根据段落中空白的位置可以判断选 项的类别，即段首通常为主旨句，段中为过渡句或细节支撑句，段尾为细节支撑句或总结句。通常说明文段内句子间会形成某种逻辑关系，包括并列、转折、对比、重复、解说、例证、因果、总分等关系，考生根据语意和衔接词便能理清这些逻辑关系，句子间逻辑关系的断定也为确定选项提供了依据。另外，段落中的平行句式结构也可以作为断定选项的依据。 (3) 利用词汇衔接确定选项。自然准确的词汇衔接可确保文章语意通顺连贯。词汇衔接通过指代和词汇复现来实现。代词通常用于指代上下文提到的名词，考生可根据指代关系或代词的单复数来确定选项。词汇复现指作者在同一篇文章的不同的位置对同一个概念进行重复描述。词汇复现包括同义词复现、同根词复现、近义词复现、反义词复现等，考生还可以利用这些复现的词汇来确定选项。 3. 解题步骤 (1) 快速浏览全文，留意文章的首段和其它段落的首句，明确文章的主题、框架结构及说明方法。 (2) 根据文章中空白的位置，将文章后的选项进行分类。如果能确定出主旨类选项，把它们放回到段落中逐一验证。 (3) 逐段阅读，利用文章框架结构、段落结构、上下文逻辑关系、句式结构、词汇衔接等来判断每空应填入的细节性过渡句和注释句。考生在做题时要注意一些关键信息词，如同义词复现、同根词复现、近义词复现、反义词复现等，还要注意一些表逻辑关系的词（短语），如and, but, so, therefore, however, yet, on the contrary, on the other hand, unfortunately, despite, in spite of等。
