Food festivals around the world

Stilton Cheese Rolling

May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans.Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.

Fiery Foods Festival —The Hottest Festival on Earth

Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction —food that is not just spicy(辛辣), but hot enough to make your mouth burn ,your head spin and your eyes water.Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate -covered habanero pepper —officially the hottest pepper in the world —or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again —and for a much -needed wash!

Windows 8, apart from Windows 95, is the biggest surprise and the only version of Microsoft's operating system that has been changed from the core(核心) when compared to its former one. However, a recent study has shown that under 20% of business owners would be willing to upgrade to the new version of Windows. The reason for this remains to be discussed and debated, and we will try to throw light on this research by providing you with some of the most common advantages and disadvantages of Windows 8.

Generally speaking, there are a great number of plus_sides related to upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

Speed—this is the biggest advantage to mention. Boot time has been reported to be up to nine times shorter than that with Windows 7.

New passwords —instead of typing your passwords, Windows 8 will let you use gestures on your favorite photos to enter your passwords. This is not only practical but also extremely cool !

Windows 8 experience — apart from computers, Windows 8 will be used on all devices, including smartphones, tablet PC's and so on. Also, owing to the fact that it has been specifically designed with touch screen users in mind, Windows 8, besides using the keyboard and mouse, will offer a whole new user experience.

However, there are still some disadvantages.

The first one that has to be mentioned is that there is no Start menu from Windows. Yes, there is no Start button in the lower left corner, and this might be a real puzzle of many Windows users. Also, many users have had a problem to get used to the new interface(界面) introduced by Windows 8. The biggest problem that is worth noticing is that Windows 8 was originally designed for touch screen users, and this may have a bad effect on desktop users who have gotten used to doing everything with the help of their keyboard and mouse.

5.What do “plus sides” in Paragraph 2 probab ly refer to?

A.Math symbols. B.Strengths.

C.New rules. D.Messages.

6.According to the text the greatest advantage of Windows 8 is its ________.

A.complex passwords

B.high speed

C.unique experience

D.new interface

7.From the text we can learn that Windows 8 ________.

A.no longer requires a password

B.was upgraded from Windows 95

C.will be popular with desktop users

D.can be used on more than computers

8.Many Windows 8 users face the problem that ________.

A.the Start menu is hidden in the lower left corner

B.they have to use fingerprints instead of buttons

C.the keyboard and mouse can't be used any longer

D.they don't get accustomed to the new interface

The production of coffee beans is a huge, profitable business, but, unfortunately, full-sun production is taking over the industry and bringing about a lot of damage. The change in how coffee is grown from shade-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of certain animals and birds, and even disturbs the world's ecological balance.

On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area's birds and animals. The shade of the forest trees provides a home for birds and other species(物种) that depend on the trees' flowers and fruits. Full -sun coffee growers destroy this forest home. As a result, many species are quickly dying out.

On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threatens(威胁) human life. Medical research often makes use of the forests' plant and animal life, and the destruction of such species could prevent researchers from finding cures for certain diseases. In addition, new coffee-growing techniques are poisoning the water locally, and eventually the world's groundwater.

Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations(种植园) could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the world's climate, and studies

Today, a man talked very loud on his phone on a train between Malvern and Reading, making many passengers upset. I wonder how he would react if I were to read my newspaper out loud on the train. I have never had the courage to do it, though.

Pak50·57 minutes ago

Why not give it a try? Perhaps you should take lessons on a musical instrument. The late musician Dennis Brain is said to have asked a fellow train passenger to turn off his radio. When his request was refused, he took out his French horn(号) and started to practise.

Angie O'Edema·42 minutes ago

I don't see how musical instruments can help improve manners in public. Don't do to others what you wouldn't like to be done to yourself. Once, a passenger next to me talked out loud on his mobile phone. I left my seat quietly, giving him some privacy to finish his conversation. He realised this and apologised to me. When his phone rang again later, he left his seat to answer it. You see, a bit of respect and cooperation can do the job better.

Taodas·29 minutes ago

I did read my newspaper out loud on a train, and it turned out well. The guy took it in good part, and we chatted happily all the way to Edinburgh.

Beijing plans to keep a tight rule on pollution by cutting emissions caused by industrial production and vehicles when it hosts the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November.

From November 3 to 12, the city will restrict the use of private vehicles based on even- and odd-numbered license plates, reducing the use of such vehicles by 35 percent, the municipal(市政府的) traffic committee said on Thursday.

All vehicles transporting construction waste and dangerous chemicals will be banned from the capital's roads during this period, but the restriction will not apply to buses, taxis and other vehicles such as police cars.

But daydreamers are also responsible for some of the greatest ideas and achievements in human history. __10__ Can you imagine what kind of world we would have without such ideas and inventions?

So how can you come up with brilliant daydreams and avoid falling over tree roots or otherwise looking like a fool?

First, understand that some opportunities (机会) for daydreaming are better than others. Feeling safe and relaxed will help you to slip into daydreams. __11__ And if you want to improve your chances of having a creative idea while you're daydreaming, try to do it while you are involved in another task — preferably something simple, like taking a shower or walking, or even making meaningless drawings.

It's also important to know how to avoid daydreams for those times when you really need to concentrate.“Mindfulness\”, being focused, is a tool that some people use to avoid falling asleep. __12__

Finally, you never know what wonderful idea might strike while your mind has moved slowly away. __13__

Always remember that your best ideas might come when your head is actually

in the clouds.

C. Without wandering minds, we wouldn't have relativity, Coke or Post-it notes.

D. At one time, daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses.

E. It involves slow, steady breathing for self-control that helps people stay calm and attentive.

F. Daydreams are often very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand.

G. Therefore, it's a good idea to keep a notebook or voice recorder nearby when you're in the daydream zone.

No one is sure how the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids near Cairo. But a new study suggests they used a little rock ‘n’ roll. Long-ago builders could have attached wooden poles to the stones and rolled them across the sand, the scientists say.

“Technically, I think what they're proposing is possible,” physicist Daniel Bonn said.

People have long puzzled over how the Egyptians moved such huge rocks. And there's no obvious answer. On average, each of the two million big stones weighed about as much as a large pickup truck. The Egyptians somehow moved the stone blocks to the pyramid site from about one kilometer away.

The most popular view is that Egyptian workers slid the blocks along smooth paths. Many scientists suspect workers first would have put the blocks on sleds(滑板) . Then they would have dragged them along paths. To make the work easier, workers may have lubricated_the_paths either with wet clay or with the fat from cattle. Bonn has now tested this idea by building small sleds and dragging heavy objects over sand.

Evidence from the sand supports this idea. Researchers found small amounts of fat, as well as a large amount of stone and the remains of paths.

However, physicist Joseph West thinks there might have been a simpler way, who led the new stud y. West said, “I was inspired while watching a television program

showing how sleds might have helped with pyramid construction. I thought, ‘Why don't they just try rolling the things?’” A square could be turned into a rough sort of wheel by attaching wooden poles to its sides, he realized. That, he notes, should make a block of stone “a lot easier to roll than a square”.

So he tried it.

He and his students tied some poles to each of four sides of a 30-kilogram stone block. That action turned the block into somewhat a wheel. Then they placed the block on the ground.

They wrapped one end of a rope around the block and pulled. The researchers found they could easily roll the block along different kinds of paths. They calculated that rolling the block required about as much force as moving it along a slippery(滑的) path.

West hasn't tested his idea on larger blocks, but he thinks rolling has clear advantages over sliding. At least, workers wouldn't have needed to carry cattle fat or water to smooth the paths.

1.It's widely believed that the stone blocks were moved to the pyramid site by ________.

A.rolling them on roads

B.pushing them over the sand

C.sliding them on smooth paths

D.dragging them on some poles

2.The underlined part “lubricated the paths” in Paragraph 4 means ________.

If hacking(黑客侵入) taught us anything in 2014, it's actually nothing.

The password management firm SplashData released its list of the worst passwords of the year and it's just as terrible as you'd think. The most common leaked password in 2014 was “123456” followed by “password” —both topped the list the year before, too.

While numbers were as popular as ever as passwords, sports terms like “baseball” and “football” were used more often. Birthday years were common too (especially 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992) and names like “Michael”,“Jennifer” and “Hunter” were also among the top 100 worst passwords o f 2014.

Here's a look at the top 10 worst passwords of the year:

1.123456 (Unchanged from 2013)

2.password (Unchanged)

3.12345 ( Up 17)

4.12345678 (Down 1)

5.qwerty ( Down 1)

6.234567890 (Unchanged)

7.baseball (New)

8.dragon (New)

9.football (New)

10.monkey (New)

This year's worst passwords are painfully weak, but what were once considered clever password strategies —using symbols, capitalization, the number 3 in place of the letter “e” — are old tricks.

It's now recommended to pick a different password for each account you use — you wouldn't use the same key in all of your locks, and the same goes for passwords.

Companies like Facebook, Twitter and Apple are now trying to make hacking more difficult on their services by offering two-factor authentication(认证), which is basically like double locking your door at night. Each time you want to log in(登录) to that account, the company will send a code to your phone —it changes after each login attempt, so hackers would have to be in physical possession of your

smartphone to know the code.

6.What can we learn from the text?

A.Hackers leaked much more passwords in 2014.

B.Symbols were among the top 10 worst passwords.

C.123456 was the most common leaked password in both 2013 and 2014.

D.People are getting more experienced in picking their passwords.

7.How many passwords were ranked lower on 2014's top 10 worst passwords list?

A.One. B.Two.

C.Three. D.Four.

8.What is recommended in the text to have safer passwords?

A.Using long and strange passwords.

B.Changing passwords regularly.

C.Replacing “e” by “3” when setting passwords.

D.Choosing different passwords for different accounts.

9.To fight against hacking, some companies ________.

A.don't accept weak passwords

B.double lock their doors at night

C.combine the password with a code to prove one's identity

D.prevent hackers from stealing customers' smartphones

根据文章第二段中的“The most common leaked password in 2014 was ‘123456’ followed by ‘password’— both topped the list the year before,too”可知,123456是2013年和2014年最普遍泄露的密码,即C项正确。

答案:C

根据文章倒数第二段中的“It's now recommended to pick a different password for each account you use”可知,为不同的账号选择不同的密码才是较安全的,即D项正确。

答案:D

Researchers at The University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a stranger's personality simply by looking at the person's shoes.

“Shoes convey a thin but useful piece of information about their wearer,” the authors wrote in th e new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality. “Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as nonverbal cues(非语言暗示) with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.”

Medical Daily notes that the detailed personality information detected in the study includes a person's general age, gender, income, political ideas, and other personality, including someone's emotional stability.

Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from The University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Volunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire.

Some of the results were expected: people with higher income most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people.

However, some r esults are funny and interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more “agreeable” people, while ankle

boots were more closely aligned_with the “aggressive” personality. The strangest

of all may be that those who wore “uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have the “calm” personality.

The researchers noted that some people would choose shoe styles to mask their actual personality information, but researchers noted that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were revealing deep insights into their personality.

4.According to Paragraph 2, which of the following statements is true?

A.The shoes people wear may reflect the information of the wearer.

B.People would always look at strangers' shoes with a practical purpose.

C.Shoes are so funny and interesting that they attract people's much attention.

D.People pay attention to shoes in order to know the information

of the shoes.

5.According to the text, the researchers did the study by ________.

A.doing casual interviews

B.carrying out lab experiments

C.analyzing the data from the participants

D.observing the participants

6.The underlined part “aligned with” probably means ________.

A.familiar with B.related to

C.provided with D.devoted to

There are an extremely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual(个体的) ant hardly weighs anything, but put together they weigh roughly the same as all of mankind. They also live nearly everywhere, except on frozen mountain tops and around the poles. For animals their size, ants have been astonishingly successful, largely due to their wonderful social behavior.

In colonies(群体) that range in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they organize their lives with a clear division of labor. Even more amazing is how they achieve this level of organization. Where we use sound and sight to communicate, ants depend primarily on pheromones(外激素), chemicals sent out by individuals and smelled or tasted by fellow members of their colony. When an ant finds food, it produces a pheromone that will lead others straight to where the food is. When an individual ant comes under attack or is dying, it sends out an alarm pheromone to warn the colony to prepare for a conflict as a defense unit.

In fact, when it comes to the art of war, ants have no equal. They are completely fearless and will readily take_on a creature much larger than themselves, attacking in large groups and overcoming their target. Such is their devotion to the common good of the colony that not only soldier ants but also worker ants will sacrifice their lives to help defeat an enemy.

Behaving in this selfless and devoted manner, these little creatures have survived on Earth for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as one, they have a collective(集体的) intelligence greater than you would expect from its individual parts.

1.We can learn from the passage that ants are ________.

A.not willing to share food

B.not found around the poles

C.more successful than all other animals

D.too many to achieve any level of organization

2.Ants can use pheromones for ________.

A.escape B.communication

C.warning enemies D.arranging labor

3.What does the underline d expression “take on” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Accept. B.Employ.

Can you imagine a world without chocolate? It's not something I'd like to do, so I was relieved to read that there's a university with a programme to safeguard the future of chocolate!

The University of Reading, in England, has just opened a new clearing house for all the world's new cocoa varieties. They must be quarantined(进行检疫) before they can be grown. Why? Cocoa production hit a record high of 4.4 million tons last year but about 30% of the precious crop is regularly lost to pests and diseases. Now we don't want that, do we?

Demand for chocolate has been increasing faster than the world supply of cocoa and researchers think that new varieties are key to solving this problem.

The University of Reading has been protecting the quality of the new crop since 1985, after it took over the task from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, London. And it has improved its facilities. The leader of the institution's cocoa project, Professor Paul Hadley, says, “One of the main issues concerning cocoa improvement is the supply of reliably clean, healthy, interesting cocoa material.”

The cocoa centre has a collection of 400 plant varieties and their greenhouse uses a lot of energy to keep them in tropical conditions. After up to two years in quarantine, clean and safe seeds are sent to some 20 countries, including several in West Africa. That's where 75% of the cocoa used for chocolate worldwide comes from. The crop is extremely important for the local economy: it employs about two million people.

Professor Paul Hadley says he works with a small team of skilled technicians who look after the collection. And more of us seem to count on them now.

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. B Here’s one number to keep in mind during your next cell phone conversation: 50. A new experiment shows that spending 50 minutes with an active phone pressed up to the ear increases activity in the brain. This brain activity probably doesn't make you smarter. When cell phones are on, they emit (发出) energy in the form of radiation that could be harmful, especially after years of cell phone usage. Scientists don't know yet whether cell phones are bad for the brain. Studies like this one are attempting to find it out. The 47 participants in the experiment may have looked a little strange. Each one had two Samsung cell phones attached to his or her head — one on each ear. The phone on the left ear was off. The phone on the right ear played a message for 50 minutes, but the participants couldn't hear it because the sound was off. With this set-up, the scientists could be sure they were studying brain activity from the phone itself, and not brain activity due to listening and talking during a conversation. After 50 minutes with two phones strapped to their heads, the participants were given PET scans. The PET scan showed that the left side (the side with the phone turned off) of each participant's brain hadn't changed during the experiment. The right side of the brain, however, had used more glucose, which is a type of sugar that provides fuel to brain cells. These right-side brain cells were using almost as much glucose as the brain uses when a person is talking. This suggests th at the brain cells there were active ― even without the person hearing anything. That activity, the scientists say, was probably caused by radiation from the phone. Henry Lai, who works at the University of Washington in Seattle, is uncomfortable with the data related to cell phones. Holding a cell phone to your ear during a conversation is “not really safe,” Lai told Science News. Lai is a bioengineer at the University of Washington in Seattle. He wrote an article about the new study for a journal, but he did not work on the study. Bioengineers bring together ideas from engineering and biology. For those who don't want to wait to find out for sure whether cell phones are bad for the brain, there are ways to talk more safely. You can have short and sweet conversations, use a

Strange Wedding Traditions around the World Flinging raw rice and breaking a glass underfoot may seem like strange ways to celebrate a marriage, at l east if you’re not used to American customs. Strange as some U.S. wedding traditions may be, they certainly cannot take the (wedding) cake for overall wedding weirdness. Those honors go to these 5 strange wedding traditions around the globe. Blackening of the Bride and Groom (Scottish) For Scotland’s tradition of blackening of the bride, which has expanded to now include the groom, absolutely anything goes. This includes tars, feathers, pillow stuffing, dirt, rotting food, sour milk, flour—you name it and you get it, you can certainly pile it on.The blackening takes place prior to the wedding, which at least spares the tux (无尾礼服) and the wedding dress, but any time or location is fair game.Once blackened, the lucky newlywed-to-be is paraded through the streets or tied to a tree as said “friends” announce the wedding.Blackening suppose dly prepares the person for any humiliation (羞耻) that life has yet to bring, as nothing could be as humiliating as being blackened. Breaking Dishes (German) Throwing plates is typically something you do after you’ve been married a few years, unless you’re from Germany. The wonderful tradition of breaking dishes actually takes place prior to the wedding at the rehearsal dinner.Tradition says the more dishes you break, the more good luck the new bride will receive. This counts double if she’s lucky enough to get a brand new set of china as a wedding gift. After this part, the bride and groom join forces to sweep up the mess, a gesture that ensures nothing will ever get broken in their home again. Keep Your Feet on the Floor (Irish) Irish legend has it that the bride must keep her feet on the floor while she’s dancing with the groom to ensure little fairies attracted by her beauty won’t kidnap her.The quick and clever fairies are always eager to get their hands on beautiful things, and legend says the bride has long been a prime target. Irish legends throughout the ages full of tales of fairies stealing brides, although it’s not clear where the brides end up and if the destination is better than where she planned to spend her honeymoon. Passing a Rolling Pin(擀面杖)(Polish) How many Polish people does it take to pass a rolling pin? It depends on how many people are at the Polish wedding! The tradition is pretty much what it sounds like,as people stand in a circle and pass a rolling pin from one person to the next, but there’s a rule—no hands are allowed, and each person must grad and then pass the pin along using only their legs. While it is not immediately evident what the tradition means or why people do it,it is evident it would be great video to capture for future generations to enjoy. No Bathroom Breaks for Three Days(Tidong tribe,Northern Borneo) Can your bladder (膀胱)really explode? Folks who follow a marriage tradition in Northern Borneo put this question to the test.Newlyweds in the Tidong tribe must stay in their home for three days—without a single bathroom break. That means no No.1, no No.2 during this three-day period. The background of this tradition is extremely unclear... as is the feeling people probably get after not relieving
