Part II Reading Comprehension (25%)

Section A

Directions:There are three reading passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggested answers

marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer to each question.

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:

There is a difference between science and technology. Science is a method of answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving practical problems. Science has to do with the facts and relationships between observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to organize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniques, and procedures for implementing the finding of science.

Another distinction between science and technology has to do with the progress in each. Progress in science excludes the human factor. Scientists, who seek to comprehend the universe and know the truth with the highest degree of accuracy and certainty, cannot pay attention to their own or other people’s likes or dislikes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things. What scientists discover may shock or anger people—as did Darwin’s theory of evolution. But even an unpleasant truth is more than likely to be useful; besides, we have the choice of refusing to believe it! But it’s hardly so with technology and we do not have the choice of refusing to hear the sonic boom produced by a supersonic aircraft flying overhead; we do not have the choice of refusing to breathe polluted air; and we do not have the choice of living in a non-atomic age. Unlike science progress, technology must be measured in terms of the human factor. The legitimate purpose of technology is to serve people in general, not merely some people; and future generations, not merely those who presently wish to gain advantage for themselves. Technology must be humanistic if it is to lead to a better world.

1. Which of the following statements about science is NOT true?

A. Science provides answers to theoretical questions.

B. Science seeks to comprehend the universe.

C. Science aims to discover the inter-connections of facts and the rules that explain them.

D. Science serves people in general and can be measured in terms of the human factor.

2. Which of the following statements about technology is NOT true?

A. Technology provides answers to practical problems.

B. Technology seeks to establish theories based on facts.

C. Technology helps change the material world.

D. Technology has to do with new designs and ways of making the things we use in our daily

life.

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

Our minds may wander during boring tasks because daydreaming is actually the brain's normal state, rather than a pointless distraction, according to a new U.S. study.

The researchers, reporting their findings today in the U.S. journal, Science, found that daydreaming could be the result of the brain thinking over important—but not immediately relevant—issues when the external environment ceases to pose interesting and engaging problems.

“For the most part psychologists have sort of assumed that we spend most of our time engaged in goal-directed thought and that, every so often, we have blips (光点) of irrelevant thoughts that pop up on the radar,”said Malia Mason of Harvard University. “However, it could very well be the case that most of the time we are engaged in less directed, unintended thought and that this state is routinely interrupted by periods of goal-directed thought."

Daydreaming or mind-wandering is more precisely defined as a state of mind where thoughts that are experienced by an individual are unrelated to what is going on in the environment around them, according to Mason. When wandering, the brain flits from one thought to the next, generating images, voices, thoughts and feelings.

When deciding how best to encourage daydreaming in order to study it, the researchers recognized that our minds often wander while we are engaged in familiar tasks, such as making a sandwich, because we don't need to concentrate on it. They trained study subjects to become proficient on certain tasks so that their minds would be able to wander when they performed them, but would have to concentrate when given something new.

6. According to the new US study mentioned in the passage, daydream happens when

___________.

A. the brain thinks over important but temporarily irrelevant things

B. the external environment stops posing interesting and engaging problems

C. the brain generates images, voices, thoughts and feelings

D. both A and B.

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:

Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. In the nearly sixty two years of his life that followed he forged a literary reputation unsurpassed in the twentieth century. In doing so, he also created a mythological hero in himself that captivated not only serious literary critics but the average man as well. In a word, he was a star.

As a boy he was taught by his father to hunt and fish along the shores and in the forests surrounding Lake Michigan. The Hemingways had a summer house in northern Michigan, and the family would spend the summer months there trying to stay cool. Hemingway would either fish the different streams that ran into the lake, or would take the row boat out to do some fishing there. He would also go squirrel hunting in the woods, discovering early in life the serenity to be found while alone in the forest or wading a stream. It was something he could always go back to throughout his life, and though he often found himself living in major cities like Chicago, Toronto and Paris early in his career, once he became successful he chose somewhat isolated places to live in.

When he wasn’t hunting or f ishing his mother taught him the finer points of music. She was an accomplished singer who once had aspirations of a career on stage, but eventually settled down with her husband and occupied her time by giving voice and music lessons to local children, including her own. Hemingway never had a knack for music and suffered through choir practices and cello lessons, however the musical knowledge he acquired from his mother helped him share in his first wife Hadley’s interest in the piano.

Part VI Writing (15%) (以下为较优秀的学生作文,仅供参考)

Celebrating Western Festivals

Nowadays more and more college students are taking interest in Western festivals, such as Halloween and Christmas. Every year when a popular Western festival is around the corner, you can feel the atmosphere of joy and fun everywhere on campus.

There are many factors accounting for this phenomenon. For one thing, with the rapid development of science and technology, the world has become much smaller and international communication has now been made more accessible and frequent. Thereby Western culture can find its way into China easily. And people like college students stand more chances to have a close contact with foreign cultures and festivals. For another, most Western festivals have been highly commercialized and appear to be very appealing. And some fancy young students just like to follow the fashion and start to celebrate them.

Positively, this will enhance the culture exchanges between the east and the west. But if it is not properly tackled, it might bring forth some negative effects, that is, when engaged in various celebrating activities of Western festivals all the year round, the Chinese students might forget their own cultural values.

For some of the most important workers in America, there is a major disconnect between pay and priorities. Teaching is one of the lowest paying among white-collar professionals. Many teachers are struggling just to make a living.

Teaching is no 9-to-5 job. Donald O’Neil leaves his house and arrives at school by 7. To connect with inner-city students, the science teacher helps coach the football team and he advises students, meets with parents and grades paper. For all of this, the 50-year-old, six-year veteran gets paid just $39,000, even though his state ranks third highest in teacher pay. His paycheck shrank by a third when he switched careers from managing a paint store to managing students. To make ends meet, he teaches night and summer school as well. Teachers just don’t make the grade when it comes to pay. The average teacher earns roughly $45,000 a year. Adjusted for inflation, their salaries have risen less than a 1/4 of a percent per year during the last decade, despite the economic boom. And the pay gap between teachers and other professions keeps growing. For example, accountants make 20 percent more than teachers today; double the gap nine years ago.

Teaching is an emotionally demanding job and teachers often get little respect. They’ll have to keep banking on emotional rewards, not financial. Given the slow economy, their paychecks aren’t likely to get fatter any time soon.

11. What did Donald do before teaching?

12. What does Donald do to make ends meet?

13. On average, how much do teachers earn a year?

14. How much more do accountants earn than teachers?

15. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

Where would we be without mothers? Those tireless caregivers wipe our noses, pack our lunches, cry at our weddings, and always consider us, their babies, though we may already be adults. Although we may often take our mothers for granted, Mother’s Day serves to remind us to take the time to remember just how special they are.

The ancient Greeks and Romans knew how precious moms were; the predecessor to Mother's Day may very well have been a Greek spring festival dedicated to Rhea, mother of the gods and goddesses. In Rome, honoring mothers came in the form of a three-day celebration called Hilaria, where people worshipped the mother goddess Cybele. Some say these Roman ceremonies evolved into England’s “Mothering Sunday”, a celebration to honor Mary, mother of Christ, which much like modern Mother's Day.

It wasn’t until 1910 that the first Mother’s Day was proclaimed in the U.S. By the following year, however, each state had created its own observances, as had various nations around the world. American President Wilson declared Mother’s Day an official national holiday in 1914. Nowadays, on the second Sunday of every May, people everywhere buy flowers, give chocolates, and send cards to the women who have raised them with love, courage, and devotion.

新视野大学英语3第三版课文翻译

新视野大学英语3第三版课文翻译 Unit 1 The Way to Success 课文A Never, ever give up! 永不言弃! As a young boy, Britain's great Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, attended a public school called Harrow. He was not a good student, and had he not been from a famous family, he probably would have been removed from the school for deviating from the rules. Thankfully, he did finish at Harrow and his errors there did not preclude him from going on to the university. He eventually had a premier army career whereby he was later elected prime minister. He achieved fame for his wit, wisdom, civic duty, and abundant courage in his refusal to surrender during the miserable dark days of World War II. His amazing determination helped motivate his entire nation and was an inspiration worldwide. Toward the end of his period as prime minister, he was invited to address the patriotic young boys at his old school, Harrow. The headmaster said, "Young gentlemen, the greatest speaker of our time, will be here in a few days to address you, and you should obey whatever sound advice he may give you." The great day arrived. Sir Winston stood up, all five feet, five inches and 107 kilos of him, and gave this short, clear-cut speech: "Young men, never give up. Never give up! Never give up! Never, never, never, never!" Personal history, educational opportunity, individual dilemmas - none of these can inhibit a strong spirit committed to success. No task is too hard. No amount of preparation is too long or too difficult. Take the example of two of the most scholarly scientists of our age, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison. Both faced immense obstacles and extreme criticism. Both were called "slow to learn" and written off as idiots by their teachers. Thomas Edison ran away from school because his teacher whipped him repeatedly for asking too many questions. Einstein didn't speak fluently until he was almost nine years old and was such a poor student that some thought he was unable to learn. Yet both boys' parents believed in them. They worked intensely each day with their sons, and the boys learned to never bypass the long hours of hard work that they needed to succeed. In the end, both Einstein and Edison overcame their childhood persecution and went on to achieve magnificent discoveries that benefit the entire world today. Consider also the heroic example of Abraham Lincoln, who faced substantial hardships,
