Common MBA interview questions

Common MBA questions:

Why business school?

Why did you decide to apply to this business school?

What makes you stand out among other candidates?

What can you contribute to our program?

What are your expectations of this program?

How do you plan to use your degree?

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Can you walk me through your resume?

Can you give me an example of a time that you demonstrated leadership?

What is your definition of teamwork?

What would you say is your biggest weakness?

What are your greatest strengths?

How would your colleagues describe you?

What are your hobbies?

Most business schools invite applicants to an on-campus interview as the final step in the screening process. Some schools don't conduct interviews, but if they do and you're invited, you'll know that things are going well. Essentially, the school is telling you: "Look, we like you on paper. But we want to meet you in person to make sure that your marbles are in order before making a decision."

Sounds straightforward, right? Wrong! Unlike the rest of the admissions process, interviews don't follow a rule book. You won't really know what to expect, nor will you be able to determine what the interviewer is looking for – at least with any certainty. So what's an honest human to do?

For starters, take care of your wardrobe. Wear formal business attire and present a professional image. Next, prepare yourself mentally. Visualize the interview as a two-way conversation between peers, not as an interview.

Finally, it's time to prepare for the most frequent business school interview questions. Chances are that you'll be asked at least a few of them, so preparing will help you look like less of a dunce. Here are the ten most frequently asked business school interview questions, in our experience.

1 "Tell Me About Yourself"

This open-ended question has the potential to cause you to trip and fall into a bottomless chasm. So don't take this four word question lightly. A strong answer establishes your status as a talented, motivated, and intriguing individual at the personal, academic, and extracurricular levels. You could start by explaining where you're from, where you grew up, and any salient personal circumstances. Then talk about your undergraduate education and why you made those choices. Finally, talk about your career choices and where you are today. Everything you say should build

toward the idea that your life has naturally led you to apply to business school. Your answer should be a concise, two to three minute response, demonstrating your ability to synthesize and structure your thoughts.

2 "Why Are You interested in an MBA?"

If you haven't figured this out in your application essays, you should go back to the drawing board. Basically, restate what you've written in your essays, but go deeper and broader. By deeper, we mean explaining in more detail those factors and motivations that you mentioned in your essays. By broader, we mean all the stuff you couldn't fit in the essays. A good answer shows both depth and breadth. If we had to pick one, we'd say to focus on breadth and let the interviewer guide you on what topics to go into more depth.

3 "Why Are You Interested in Our School?"

Why not? List all the reasons why their business school is the single best match for your career goals. Discuss its faculty, facilities, theoretical approach, course offering, student activities, job placement record, location, and any and all reasons that demonstrate a deliberate choice. Your goal is convey your belief that the school is a highly compelling choice for you, if not your first choice.

4 "Discuss A Time When You Were A Leader"

Your interviewer will almost certainly dwell on your leadership qualities. He or she may ask you to expand upon the leadership examples mentioned in your essays, or ask for a brand new example. Whatever the case, be sure to have several examples ready illustrating different forms of leadership – leading a team, taking the ethical high ground, making a positive impact, etc.

5 "What Are Your Strengths and Weaknesses?"

Nobody likes answering this question, but it comes up. Describing your strengths should be straightforward. Pick two or three qualities that you possess which demonstrate your business acumen. For example, if you're an HR director, you can discuss your ability to identify strong candidates and match them with great opportunities. Talking about your weaknesses is another story. The general rule is to pick weaknesses that are really "weaknesses turning into strengths". You might say, for instance, that you don't always pay attention to details because you're focused on the big picture, but that you've started to train yourself to do so.

6 "Why Should We Accept You?"

Why not? Describe in modest and balanced terms why you are eminently qualified for the program. Talk about your personal, academic, and extracurricular accomplishments and how they make you a strong candidate for the program. Discuss your long range plans and how you will make full use of the university's resources to accomplish your goals. While may sound selfish,

you're really telling the school that they won't be wasting an admissions spot with you.

7 "What Are Your Career Goals?"

You might not have a clue, but it's important to have a preliminary idea of your career goals. Perhaps you want to become an investment banker, or use your business degree to open up a non-profit foundation. Whatever the case, sketch your plans and make it clear how an MBA is an integral stepping stone. It's okay to have more than one career goal, so long as your goals show that you're planning to apply the knowledge you'll acquire. Whatever you say, don't say you want to make money.

8 "Where Else Are You Applying?"

This is a delicate question. If you answer, you're admitting that you're interested in more than one school. If you don't, you risk coming across as defensive and combative. One way to deal with this question is to say that you've applied to a few other schools whose programs correspond with your coursework interests, career goals, and other criteria. But that their school is really an excellent fit and that you'd love to be considered for the entering class. This is somewhat evasive, but doesn't force a direct comparison between their school and other schools. Another option is to disclose everything, particularly if you have other offers. This shows that you're an attractive candidate and it may help you get admitted. Which approach you take is up to you.

9 "What Have You Read Recently?"

Don't answer the latest New York Times Bestseller. The interviewer is interested in establishing your intellectual quality and curiosity. Ideally, your reading will consist of business books, newspapers, and journals. This demonstrates that your interest is genuine, maybe even indicative of a passion. You can also mention wider reading, to show that you're well rounded, but start with material that's closer to your interviewer's heart.

10 "What Questions Do You Have For Me?"

You're almost guaranteed to have this in your business school interview questions. So prepare a list of five or more questions. The best questions demonstrate that you've researched the program. For example, you can ask the interviewer to talk more about opportunities to connect with practicioners in the private equity industry: "I'm interested in pursuing a career in private equity. Are there conferences or other student activities that would enable me to meet with industry practicioners during the course of my studies?" You can also discuss specific aspects of the school's facilities, courses, or other peculiarities that show that you're a serious applicant. So have your own list of business school interview questions in your back pocket!

1) Tell us something about yourself: This is one of the most common questions you will come across while appearing for an interview (be it the MBA, or for a job or perhaps when you go for a matrimony meeting). Interviewers ask this question for different reasons - to test your communication skills, gauge your confidence, study your eye movement and body language, check the clarity of your thoughts and perhaps make a strategy to ask next few questions. I have come across many candidates who have a well structured response to this question and a few candidates who start thinking at that time. Think of those days when you rehearsed the 'Jack and Jill' several times to give your first stage performance; don't hesitate to do the same now! Write your response and keep reading it over and over to be able to present yourself well. You may like to include your name, your qualification, your family background and your interests.

2) What are your Strengths and Weaknesses: This is the second most favorite of interviewers. Give a genuine response; especially, don't fake a weakness (no one is perfect). You may like to give an example of how you have used your strength in the recent times to achieve an objective or how your weakness has taught you a life lesson. You should be ready with a plan of action to work on your weakness and fix it soon.

3) What are your short-term and long-term objectives or Where do you see yourself 5 years and 15 years from now: Don't try to give the witty response, "In your seat, Sir"... this is outdated! Don't tell them as a Manager or General Manager or Vice President; the interviewer knows the corporate hierarchy better! Talk about the work you would be doing; for instance - "Advertising is the area of my interest; after five years I see myself working in an advertising firm and conceptualizing print media advertisements."

4) Why MBA? Why MBA from this B-school? and Why this particular niche Program?: "My father asked me to do so". "There is good scope and I'll get a good package". "I always wanted to earn a post gradate degree". "It's the trend; everyone is pursuing MBA today". These are definitely not the kind of responses that the interviewer wants to listen! If you are a fresh graduate, you can talk about how a MBA can better prepare you to take up corporate responsibilities. Now there is no harm in adding that it will also improve your monetary position. If you have work experience, you can talk about an incident that triggered your decision. You should read the history and credentials of the B-school where you have applied to and if you have applied to a niche specialization, make sure you have studied the program brochure well. I had once asked a prospective student, "You have applied for eBusiness; what do you think it's all about?" She replied Empowerment in Business; being a girl I need to be empowered and madam you are such a fine example of woman empowerment! I almost fainted!

1. Do you know yourself? Tell us something about yourself.

This is perhaps the most commonly asked question & is a question that one should always be prepared to answer. Some of the things you can talk about here are-

a. Your educational and/or professional background that is, where you come from?

b. Your interests & hobbies, that is to do with your personality, who are you?

c. Your strengths, that is a glimpse for the recruiter into your profile and how that will benefit any organization that you work for?

Don’t repeat what’s already there on your Resume. The question is thrown at you, to test your communication skills, body language, confidence and how you make sure you are giving the most brilliant first impression.

2. Do you have a Resume with a 6-second impact? Can you walk me through your resume?

This is a very challenging question as it requires you to be aware of your strengths and key experiences. It basically tests your ability to present and talk about the highlights of your profile. Make sure your resume is making the 6 second impact for free at https://www.doczj.com/doc/ad5229173.html,/bp now!

3. Do you know where you’re heade d? Where do you see yourself 5/10 years from now?

Another popular question that keeps recurring in the MBA personal interviews. You should try to be honest while answering this one. Don’t say “In your seat”! It’s outdated and long foregone. You should have a relevant and appropriate answer ready! For instance, if you have applied for an MBA in finance, you should see yourself in a managerial position handling responsibilities in the finance vertical of an organization. You can also substantiate your answer with the industry, field that you want to go into. You can also talk about a vision for your personal life or a self-actualization need here. Your ultimate career goal must be in line with your specialization and your choice to get an MBA.

4. Have you done your SWOT? What are your strengths & weaknesses?

A SWOT is a detailed analysis of your-self. It’s a cool feeling to analyze oneself like a subject. The most challenging aspect of a SWOT, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats, is the W. It’s really hard to come up with Weaknesses that you can share with the recruiter who is totally judging every word you utter. Also, need to simultaneously make sure that strengths and weaknesses are not contradicting each other. For instance, do n’t say in one instant, that you are emotionally stable and then in another, point out your short-tempered nature. Also, stay away from the clichéd way of presenting “strength” as your weakness. For example: “My weakness is that I’m a perfectionist”. Come up with a genuine weakness and then quickly move on to talking about how you strive to tackle it and take it to your advantage. Interviewer is aware that no one is perfect so trying to outsmart the recruiter here is a bad idea. For example: “I can be disor ganised at times & thus miss important events. I’ve started maintaining a planner & leave reminders on my phone to help me keep track of important deadlines, events etc.”

5. Do you know the purpose for your being there? Why MBA?

This answer would be tailor-made to where you’re coming from or your background. If you are a

fresher, your answer could be that an MBA would be your ideal launch pad into the corporate world.

If you are someone with prior work-experience, you would have different reasons for pursuing an MBA. Answers as abstract as “To make more money”, “To gain more knowledge” should not be on your list.

6. Can you reason your willingness and potential to be where you’re applying for? Why do you want to join this B-school?

In an interview for B-school X, a person was asked to choose between X & Y while B-school Y is better than X. The candidate faced a dilemma wrt the perspective to answer such a question. Clearly, this is your chance to impress them! You should know about the institute’s histor y, its flag-ship programmes, ranking, placement records, faculty members etc. It would be good if you can get in touch with a few students of that institute before your PI. Apart from giving you an idea about the kind of panel you would have to face, they can give you valuable insight into the college’s academic & extra-curricular activities. Your answer should reflect that you’ve done your homework well & that you’re keen to pursue your management degree from that particular B-school.

7. Do you have a strong hold on your learning curve? Questions about the Course you are pursuing or pursued.

This is about knowing the fundamentals of your course material well. Don’t assume that there would be no experts from your field in the panel who can quiz you to selection/rejection. Be well prepared!

8. Are you well-read? Questions related to your Profession

You should go prepared knowing all about your job profile, your KRAs (key result areas), your organisation, its performance in the markets, your industry, y our organisation’s competitors.

9. Are you a fun person? Questions about your Hobbies

Make sure your interests and hobbies also give you an edge and help you stand out! If you’ve mentioned gardening as a hobby, you are expected to know which fertiliser works best for rose flowers! So make sure that you have in-depth information about your interest. If you have mentioned hobbies that are genuine, this should not be a problem. But if you’ve mentioned “reading” as a hobby, just to impress the interview panel, then you better do some R&D!

10. Are you really aware or did you just get lucky? Questions from your GD

It’s quite possible that your Personal Interview panel could be the same as your Group Discussion. In such a scenario, be prepared to expect questions around your GD topic. They could probe you

further about it or ask about a certain point you’d made in the GD. You should be able to defend or justify your point of view.

阜蒙县第二高中2017--2018学年度上学期高一期末考试 英语试卷 时间:100分钟总分:150分 第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A A teenager needs to have a sense of independence in their life to feel secure (安全的). To some teenagers independence means a lot to them, and I think that some parents don’t allow their teenagers enough independence. Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurted if they go outside into the world. But if parents control their kids too much, they may never learn to live on their own. The best way for a teenager to learn lesson is through experience. I think it is beneficial for teenagers to have freedom. Teenagers’ lack of freedom can also stop them from having good friendship at school. Some might say that this is a good thing, because it helps them focus more on their school work. I argue that this can only discourage them not to do their school work. Some parents do not allow their children to be around their friends outside the school, thinking that this will get them into trouble. But I don’t think so. Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cellphone? Cellphones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate better with their friends. Privacy is another issue between parents and their teenagers. Teenagers tend to enjoy relaxation by themselves in their own room. This also gives them a sense of independence. It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home. I know that my mom always goes in m y room when I’m not home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door. 1. What is the main idea of the second paragraph? A. Kids know how to live independently. B. Some parents allow their kids no freedom. C. It benefits teenagers to have freedom. D. Kids have a dull routine every day 2. In the opinion of the author, ___________. A. parents should make it easy for kids to communicate with their friends B. good friendships between kids harm their school work C. it is unnecessary for a kid to have a cellphone D. kids should focus on the school work 3. How do teenagers usually feel when their parents enter their rooms in their absence?
