II. Critical Writing (40 points)

Directions: Read the following passage and write an essay on it.

Reform policies issued by a few provinces and municipalities in

China on the Gaokao, or the National College Entrance Exam, in

2014, tend to start with the English test, such as the lowering of the

share of English scores in Beijing and the deletion of the listening

comprehension part from the English exam in Shandong. The

phenomenon has triggered quite a debate over its impact on the

teaching of English and Chinese in China, on Gaokao itself, on

China’s efforts for internationalization, on fairness and some other

aspects.

Participate in the debate with an essay of around 300 words with a title of your own choice, a clearly stated view point, and detailed analysis to support your view point.

III. This part consists of eight sections. Answer the questions set for the program for which you are making the application. Write your answers or your translation on the ANSWER SHEET. (70 points)

Passage 1:

Equivalence is a central concept in translation theory, but it is also a controversial one. Some theorists define translation in terms of equivalence relations while others reject the theoretical notion of equivalence, claiming it is either irrelevant or damaging.

Passage 2:

Translation has been instrumental in transmitting culture, sometimes under unequal conditions responsible for distorted and biased translations, ever since countries and languages have been in contact with each other. Thus the Romans ‘pillaged’ Greek culture; the Toledo School transferred Arabic and Greek learning to Europe; and up to the nineteenth century European culture was drawing heavily on Latin and Greek translations.

3. Translation Practice (40 points)

In all profitable thinking about modern education one central fact is stated or assumed--- the fact that education has become a public enterprise. To think of it as a matter mainly of private interest, to discuss it chiefly in terms of personal development, is to ignore the achieved conditions of civilized life and the clear trend of progress. The spread of public schools is but the obvious outward sign of a growing conviction concerning all educational endeavor. That conviction was long ago proclaimed and has now become a guide to action--- the conviction that the community has a vital stake in the education of every child. Education is a common concern not merely because there are many children to be educated, but because there can be no significant outcome in the education of any child which is not of importance, not to him only, but also to others, immediately to many, more remotely to all.

This has always been true. Modern life, with cities and the inventions which belittle time and space, has only made it more apparent and action

upon it more pressing. No one can think with penetration upon the results of education who does not come at last to a fuller vision of the interdependence of men.

Section Two: 同声传译方向部分 (70 points)

This section, consisting of three parts, is set for applicants to the MA program of simultaneous interpretation, with Part 1, General Knowledge, and Part 3, Translation Practice, overlapped with the same parts in Section One, those set for applicants to the program of translation.

1. General Knowledge (10 points)

Directions: Answer the questions in Part 1, General Knowledge, in Section One, and your answer on your answer sheet.

2. Paraphrase and Comment (20 points)

Directions: in this part, you are given two passages on issues concerning conference interpreting. Read them carefully, paying special attention to the underlined words and then make some comments on each of them in English on your ANSWER SHEET. You may use specific examples to illustrate your comment whenever necessary.

1) Comprehension is not a binary variable...... When people say they

‘understand’ a sentence, generally their comprehension can be considered incomplete.

2) Comprehension during interpreting is a non-automatic process……. The

fact that interpreting constraints force interpreters to deviate from their habitual speech production pattern may account for the poor quality of their language output.

Passage 1 One motivational analyst who became curious to know there had been such a great rise in impulse buying at supermarkets was James Vicary. He suspected that some special psychology must be going on inside the women as they shopped in supermarkets. His suspicion was that perhaps they underwent such an increase in tension when confronted with so many possibilities that they were forced into making quick purchases. He set out to find out if this was true. The best way to detect what was going on inside the shopper was through the use of a galvanometer or lie detector. That obviously was impractical. The next best thing was to use a hidden motion-picture camera and record the eye-blink rate of the women as they shopped. How fast a person blinks his eyes is a pretty good index of his state of inner tension. The average person, according to Mr. Vicary, normally blinks his eyes about 32 times a minute. If he is tense, he blinks them more frequently; and, under extreme tension, he may blink up to 50 or 60 times. 英语专业考研科目 首先英语专业考研和考研英语是不同的,主要是考试的内容和针对的考生。 英语专业考研是针对报考英语专业研究生的考生而进行的,考核科目为:政治(分值100)、基础英语(分值150分)、综合英语或专业课(分值150分)以及第二外语(分值100)共四门。 考研英语是针对那些报考非英语专业的考生所进行的英语水平测试,是教育部统一出题,主要考查大学英语的基本知识,包括完型、阅读、新题型、翻译、写作等五部分,卷面分值为100,与政治(分值为100)和其他两门专业课(分值分别为150分)共同构成了研究生入学考试的四大科目。 英语专业初试的4门课程中,只有政治一门是国家统一命题,其他3门都是个招生单位自己出题(个别语种属于国家统考,但是这类学校一般很少并且会提前在招生说明中说明)。 二外是报考学校出题,法语或者日语或者德语或者俄语任选一门。法语教材一般就是《法语》北外版,《简明法语教程》孙辉的,《大学法语简明教程》薛建成的,还有李志清的《公共法语》或者《新大学法语》……因为我二外是学法语的,所以日语不太清楚,可能是《标准日本语》吧。法语的学习资料无论在大中城市还是小城市,都特别难求,字典、词典、参考书、练习册……个别外文书店有也不是很全,以后可以多介绍一些这样的书目,大家找找看。

专业课两门中,一门一般为基础英语或者综合英语(名称不同而已,考核范围和题型大体类似,什么选择,完形,翻译,写作等等,属于水平测试)但是里面一般总会有《高级英语》(张汉熙主编,外研社出版的上下2册)里面的修辞手法和写作方法的题目,还很难,其他题型的水平相当于GRE或者专业TEM4或者 8级的样子,有的学校写作要求500词以上呢! 而另一门专业课视报考学校和专业方向不同考的科目也不同,国家没有统一出题,都是各个招生单位自己出题。一般说,大的综合类名校,分方向考试,小的一些学校在初试 中不分方向,考上硕士后才分方向。 比如考文学方向的,一定要考《英国文学史及其作品选读》(一般用刘炳善或者吴伟仁的教材比较多,全英语答卷哦)。 语言学方向一般考《英语语言学》(一般用胡壮麟和戴伟栋的书,也是全英语答卷)。 翻译方向:张培基的《英汉翻译教程》经典教材了,还有《汉英翻译教程》,书目是参考,一般不会出课本原题,汉译英考的是运用课本介绍的翻译方法来翻译词语、句子, 文章,什么现代文,文言文,名家作品等等,英译汉一般是原版报刊杂志文章,英语名著 节选…… 还有考英美社会与文化,就是俗称的《英美概况》,外研社朱永涛的几套教材,或者吉林科学技术出版社张奎武的英美概况2册教材,河南大学来安方的教材……这个考的基
