Monty Python ' s Flying Circus was a popular television show back then. The actors brought the best British humour into our Canadian lives. Mr Stevens would often act out one of their funny scenes in the front of the classroom. Some thought he was strange, and I guess he was, but he knew how to make a math lesson interesting.

For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it. Now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be.

You don ' t have to be spinele(软弱的)in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked and respected if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights. But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your group, to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.

You cannot expect to be perfect, so you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to blame (责备)uni ess he refuses to lear n from them. Many young people become discouraged when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like -selfishness, laziness, and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults and have to fight against them.

At the same time, it is important to remember that, while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong, it is a good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you don't like a teacher or a classmate. Try to see why, and look at yourself, too. To be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislike you. Someday, things may turn out all right, and then you will have to learn to get along the best with the situation, without thinking too much about it. Worrying never helps in a situation you can ' t change.

Time management. There are just 24 hours in each day. What you do with that time makes all the difference.

If you really have a problem with note-taking, you might ask your teacher if you can record daily lessons. Do whatever it takes!

To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School, Massachusetts, school is very different.

Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are no teachers —onl"ystaff members". The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway.

“You do not need to say to-tyheeart-horledes, ‘Go to explore your environment.

You can't stop them! "says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. "But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning. ”

At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!

The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote (投票)each —even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more.

When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.
