四、阅读理解。(共12小题,计24分)

A

We are not rich by what we possess but rather by what we can do without.

——Immauel Kant Many times my friend June would say, “If I ever get rich, I’m getting a completely new wardrobe (大衣柜) and moving into a bigger apartment.” I thought of her words and her chances of being rich are about as good as mine. But, to everyone’s surprise, a few years ago June did come into a large inheritance (遗产).

At first June said very little about the money. As the initial shock disappeared, she became excited. June is a great believer in making lists, so I wasn’t surprised to find her writing down all the ways she would spend her new wealth.

As time went on, she started revising the list. What had been midway down the list was now at the top. At last, I said to her, “You know, it isn’t necessary to spend all your inheritance at once. Take some time; think about it.”“I know, I know,” she answered with a little bit anger.

Then one morning June called, “I’ve decided how I want to use my new inheritance. I want to see what you think,” she said. This wasn’t something I looked forward to, but we had been friends so long.

As we sat, June spread a sheet of paper on the table. To my great surprise, she had written only two words: Charities, and Grandchildren—in that order. Though I had promised to keep quiet, I couldn’t keep from asking how she came to this decision.

“Well,”she said, “I took your advice and thought about it.”She added, “Helping others means a lot to me, so I’m hoping this gift will help people in need.”

I interrupted, “But what about this big apartment you most hope to have?”

“At first it was hard, but it doesn’t seem as important any more,” she answered with a smile.

Then June moved her hand, and I could see a few words written in tiny letters at the bottom of the page. After having a look at the small print, I burst into laughter. June had written: AND one new wardrobe.

51. From the passage we can learn that June at first _____________.

A. was richer than the writer

B. was no richer than the writer

C. was poorer than the writer

D. was not interested in money as the writer

52. When making a list of how to deal with her inheritance, June _____________.

A. didn’t change it at all

B. had a quarrel with the writer

C. kept it secret from the writer

D. made some changes to it

53. When June called the writer to talk about her new decision, the writer ______________.

A. felt that June would do something meaningful

B. refused at first, but changed her mind later

C. had decided not to make any comments on June’s list

D. was eager to learn more about the new list

B

A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or t ear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves—the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be be cause more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.

This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. Next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh (刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.

Words possess power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.

Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

54. The main idea of the first paragraph is that _______________.

A. words have a lasting effect on us

B. inspiring words give us confidence

C. negative words may let us down

D. not sticks and stones but words will hurt us

55. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely ______________.

A. remind ourselves

B. praise ourselves

C. make ourselves relaxed

D. give ourselves amusement

56. The author would probably hold the view that ___________________.

A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers

B. negative words may motivate us to make more progress

C. people tend to remember friendly words

D. it is better to think twice before talking to others
