Three ancient irrigation (灌溉) sites from China have been listed as world heritage: the Huang Ju irrigation, Hanzhong three weirs (堰) and Yellow River ancient canalization projects. The 23rd International Congress on Irrigation and Drainage announced the three ancient irrigation sit es as world’s Heritage Irrigation Structures in Mexico City, capital city of Mexico, on Tuesday.
The Huang Ju Irrigation Project is located in Southeast China’s Fujian province. It was named after its designer Huang Ju, an official in the Sui Dynasty (581-618) , more than 1 ,400 years ago. The system had two canals, watering an area of more than 20 000 mu in ancient China.
The Hanzhong Three Weirs Project in Shaanxi province is composed of Shanhe Weir, Wumen Weir and Yangzhen Weir, all completed in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). The Hanzhong Basin has a long history of irrigation, dating back to the first century. The most developed period of farm watering along the Hanshui River was in the 11th century, with the above three weirs in Hanzhong as typical systems.
The Yellow River Ancient Canalization Project was situated in Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui autonomous region. Its construction started in the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). A total of 14 canals originated from the Yellow River or the country’s mother r iver, serving the area for more than 2, 200 years. The Watering system helped the region evolve from nomadic civilization (游牧文明) to agricultural one.
The three projects were listed of world heritage irrigation structures for their contribution to people-centered water management systems, which are important to humanity and sound environment.
China now has 13 systems identified in the world’s watering heritage program, including previously recognized

France and a French food manufacturer have ordered a major international recall (召回) of several food products for babies. The Lactalis Group is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of dairy products. It said French health officials warned the company that 26 babies had been sickened with salmonella (沙门氏菌) since December 1.
The French Ministry of the Economy ordered the suspension (暂停，终止) of marketing and export of several baby products made at a Lactalis factory in Craon, France. It said all the products were manufactured after February 15, 2017, The French health ministry’s website says the recall affects nine countries in four continents: Britain and Greece in Europe; Morocco and Sudan in Africa ; Peru and Colombia in South America; and Pakistan, Bangladesh and China in Asia. The United States, a major market for Lactalis products, is not affected.
A company spokesman told the Associated Press Monday that the recall is “precautionary (预防的)” and
involves “several million” products. Lactalis noted in a statement that the 26 cases of infection were linked to products with the brand names Picot SL, Pepti Junior 1 , Milumel Bio 1 and Picot Riz. The statement included an apology and expressed support to the families whose children were sickened. The company said it had taken measures to clean the area of the factory where the bacteria spread.
Infection with salmonella can cause sickness. Signs of infection include abdominal (腹部) pain , diarrhea (腹泻) and higher than normal body temperature. The sickness is more dangerous among some populations, including the very young.
The Lactalis Group is a privately-held company. Its headquarters is in western France. For decades, a large creature called a yeti has been talked about in Western popular culture. It has appeared in films, cartoons, video games and more. The yeti is large and hairy and walks on two feet. Some people claim they have seen a yeti in the Himalayan Mountains in Asia. It has a fearsome reputation. New genetic research suggests this huge beast may in fact exist in the Himalayas. But it’s probabl y just a bear.
A team of scientists said this week that they had studied the DNA of nine samples from museums and private collections. All of the samples were said to have come from the yeti. They found that eight of the nine samples came from bears — Asian black bears, Himalayan brown bears and Tibetan brown bears, to be exact. The one remaining sample came from a dog, the researchers found.
Charlotte Lindqvist studies bear genetics at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is one of the writers of the yeti report published recently in the scientific journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. She said the report’s findings “strongly suggest” that the legend of the yeti is connected closely to bears that live in the mountainous area. Lindqvist called the study the most detailed research to date of so-called yeti specimens (标本) .
While the recent study did not identify a yeti, it did give scientists information about the area’s bear populations. The brown bears living high in the Tibetan Plateau and the western Himalayan Mountains appear to belong to two separate bear populations, researchers found. Despite living fairly close to each other, those two populations have been separated for thousands of years, Lindqvist said.
