and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on

the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

Questions 33 to 37 are based on the following passage.

America's cities are a curious paradox(自相矛盾的东西). They are the depositories (存放处) of great wealth and the source of abundant incomes; they are the nucleus of economic activity and opportunity. Yet these same cities embody blighted neighborhoods, homeless "street people", street drugs and high crime rates, an accurately deteriorating physical environment, a sense of social unrest, and perhaps the evolution of a social "underclass."

Fly over Manhattan or the Chicago Loop and the breathtaking skyline will excite your pride with the every grandeur of the American achievement. These towering symbols give dramatic character to the core of our giant cities. But their shadows cannot hide the disgrace at their feet.

There we find the decayed and decaying center cities, traffic-clogged, smoke-polluted, crime-ridden, recreationally barren(贫瘠). It is there we find the segregated(种族隔离的)slum with its crumbling tenement house, waiting to crush the hope of the black and the displaced farmer who has pursued his dream into the city. There too we find the suburbs ringing the cities in their rapid, undisciplined(任性的)growth with ugly, congested webs of houses.

37. America's cities are _______.

A) the nucleus of economic activity and opportunity

B) with heavy traffic jams and smoke pollution

C) embodiment of blighted neighborhoods, homeless "street people",

D) all of the above

Passage Two

Questions 38 to 42 are based on the following passage.

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degrees of health and wealth and the other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes miserable. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, and events.

The people who are to be happy fix their attention on the pleasant parts of conversation, the the goodness of the wines, and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the contrary things. Therefore, they are continually discontented. By their remarks, they sour the pleasures of society, offend many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere.

The tendency to criticize and be disgusted is perhaps taken up originally by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it are convinced of its bad effects on their interests and tastes.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life, since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others, nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect, and scarcely that. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at obtaining some advantage in rank or fortune, nobody wishes them success. These people should change this bad habit. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them.

38. People who are to be unhappy ________.

A ) always consider things differently from others

B) are usually influenced by the results of things

C) can discover the unpleasant part of certain things

D) usually have a habit of finding fault

39. When those unhappy people meet others, they will ________.

A) be happy with the pleasures of society

B) have a good taste of the pleasures of society

C) feel depressed about the pleasures of society

D) enjoy the pleasures of society

40. According to the passage, it can be safely said that ________.

A) if they realize the harmfulness of their habits, the unhappy people may get rid of it.

B) if people are in pain, they will be critical about everything.

C) The tendency to criticize and be disgusted is perhaps taken up originally by nature.

D) unhappy people are not content with anything they have.

41. "And scarcely that" in the last paragraph means _______.

A) just like that B) almost not like that

C) more than that D) not at all like that

42. If such unhappy persons don't change their bad behavior, the authors suggests that

people______.

A) avoid contact with them. B) criticize their misconduct.

C) help them recognize their bad effects. D) show no respect to them.

Passage Three

Questions 43 to 47 are based on the following passage.

A person may have an idea about himself that will prevent him from doing good work. He may have the idea that he is not capable of it. A child may think he is stupid because he does not understand how to make the most of his mental faculties (能力), or he may accept another person's mistaken estimate of his ability.

A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He won't go at a job with the confidence necessary for success. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief in his incompetence. Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him. In this way, they too developed the idea, "Isn't it too bad that Alfred can't do arithmetic?" He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try, and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected.

One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldn't do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His newfound confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination (决心) and purpose, and he soon became extraordinary good at arithmetic.

This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one's ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability.

43. One might be prevented from doing good work because _______.

A) he thinks he is old enough to make the most of his mental recourses.

B) he accepts another person’s underestimate of his ability

C) he has the idea that he is capable of doing everything.

44. A person who believes in his incompetence will _______.

A) spare no efforts to do things

B) fail to go at a job but never lose heart

C) shift to learn other course instead of math

D) show complete lack of confidence

45. As a boy, Alfred Adler was poor at arithmetic because ________.

A) he lost his self-confidence

B) he was slow mentally

C) his teacher had no confidence in herself

D) his parents expected too much of him

46. Which of the following is the most important factor to Alder's success?

A) spirit and experience B) interest and self-respect

C) confidence and determination D) purpose and knowledge

47. Alder's experience made him realize that _______.

A) people are not as capable as they think

B) people can be more capable than they think

Passage Four

Questions 48 to 52 are based on the following passage.

For millions of years before the appearance of the electric light, shift work, all-night cable TV and the Internet, earth's creatures evolved on a planet with predictable and reassuring 24-hour rhythms (节奏). Our biological clocks are set for this daily cycle. Simply, our bodies want to sleep at night and be awake during the day. Most women and men need between eight and eight and a half hour of sleep a night to function properly throughout their lives. (Contrary to popular belief, humans don't need less sleep as they age.)

But on average, Americans sleep only about seven and a half hour per night, a marked drop from the nine hours they averaged in 1910. What's worse, nearly one third of all Americans get less than six hours of sleep on a typical work night. For most people, that's not nearly enough.

Scientists have identified more than 80 different sleep disorders. Some sleeping disorders are genetic(遗传的). But many problems are caused by staying up late and by traveling frequently between time zone or by working nights. Dr. James F. Jones in Denver says that sleep disorders are often diagnosed as other discomforts.

Sleep experts say that most people would benefit from a good look at their sleep patterns. My motto is "Sleep defensively", says Mary Carskadon of Brown University. She says people need to carve out sufficient time to sleep, even if it means giving up other things. Sleep

routines-we going to bed and getting up at the same time every day-are important. As with Eisner, who used to suffer from sleeplessness, a few life style changes-avoiding stimulants(刺激物) and

late meals, exercising hours before bedtime, relaxing with a hot bath-yield better sleep.

48. It can be inferred from Para2 that _______.

A) most people need seven and a half hours of sleep every night.

B) for most people, less than six hours of sleep on a typical work night is enough

C) most people need less sleep when they grow older.

D) on average, most people in the US today sleep less per night than they used to be.

A) adjust our activities to the new inventions.

B) be able to predict the rhythms of our biological clock.

C) sleep for at least eight hours per night

D) believe we need less sleep as we age.

50. According to the author, many sleeping disorders are caused by _______.

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三) (总分:25.00,做题时间:90分钟) 一、单项选择题(总题数:5,分数:25.00) Task 6 The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it. (分数:5.00) (1).Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?(分数:1.00) A.Because the world is becoming more and more noisy. √ B.Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution. 新理念大学英语三级阅读教程

本文节选自Iron John: A Book About Men Iron John: A Book About Men by Robert Bly. Copyright 1994, 2004 by Robert Bly We talk a great deal about "the American man," as if there were some constant quality that remained stable over decades, or even within a single decade. The men who live today have veered far away from the Saturnian, old-man-minded farmer, proud of his introversion, who arrived in New England in 1630, willing to sit through three services in an unheated church. In the South, an expansive, motherbound cavalier developed, and neither of these two "American men" resembled the greedy railroad entrepreneur that later developed in the Northeast, nor the reckless I-will-do-without culture settlers of the West. 【这一段里作者提到哪几种美国人?他提这些的目的是什么?】 Even in our own era the agreed-on model has changed dramatically. During the fifties, for example, an American character appeared with some consistency that became a model of manhood adopted by many men: the Fifties male. He got to work early, labored responsibly, supported his wife and children, and admired discipline. Reagan is a sort of mummified version of this dogged type. This sort of man didn't see women's souls well, but he appreciated their bodies; and his view of culture and America's part in it was boyish and optimistic. Many of his qualities were strong and positive, but underneath the charm and bluff there was, and there remains, much isolation, deprivation, and passivity. Unless he has an enemy, he isn't sure that he is alive. The Fifties man was supposed to like football, be aggressive, stick up for the United States, never cry, and always provide. But receptive space or intimate space was missing in this image of a man. The personality lacked some sense of flow. The psyche lacked compassion in a way that encouraged the unbalanced pursuit of the Vietnam war, just as, later, the lack of what we might call "garden" space inside Reagan's head led to his callousness and brutality toward the powerless in El Salvador【查工具书:是怎么回事?】, toward old people here, the unemployed, schoolchildren, and poor people in general. 【Fifties Male有什么特点?】 The Fifties male had a clear vision of what a man was, and what male

大学英语三级阅读模拟试题集

大学英语三级阅读模拟试题集 Model Test 1 Passage One Suppose you set your mind to work on the problem of how you would use your own eyes if you had 3 more days to see. If with the oncoming darkness of the 3rd night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you spend those 3 precious days? What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon? I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest long on the things that have become dear to you so that you could take the memory of them with you in the night that loomed (降临) before you. I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. I should want not merely the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the sympathetic tenderness and patience with which she accomplished the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of difficulties, and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often. Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for just 3 days! 1.What can be inferred from the 2nd paragraph? A. the author is a deaf B. the author is a blind person C.
