Day Trips from Sydney: A Short Tour of the Blue Mountain

Here is a suggested short tour of the Blue Mountains

that you can easily follow in a day from your base in Sydney.

From the center of Sydney, head towards Parramatta

and join the M4 highway at Stratified. After you leave the highway at Lapstone, you will drive through a series of small towns.

Stop at Subline Point, near the town of Leura.

There is short, step climb down to the lookout point. You need to walk carefully, as there is just enough space for two people to pass on the uneven steps that border a very sharp drop down the mountain.

When you reach the lookout at Subline Point, you are rewarded for the somewhat scary walk by the most wonderful, breathtaking panoramic view of the mountain.

The Three Sisters at Echo Point, near the town of Katoomba.

Take a ride on the aerial cable car for a more

close-up view of the Three Sisters and to appreciate

just how steep the mountains are. You can also

experience the world’s steepest railway incline by taking the scenic railway.

Visit Katoomba Waterfall.

Katoomba is a good place to stop for lunch, with cafes and restaurants in its long main street.

On the outskirts of Katoomba, visit Katoomba Falls where a waterfall cascades down the steep, tree-covered mountain. The Katoomba Falls Kiosk is a good place to

sit on a sofa and relax with a cup of coffee.

Outside Blackheath, head for Hargraves Lookout.

Hargraves Lookout is a good place to visit because there are very few tourists. There are no steep drops on the way, although there is a walk from the lower lookout point into the bush that looks very steep .

Once you have visited Hargraces Lookout, you could head back to Sydney.

56. Which of the following can best describe your

journey to Subline Point?

A. No root, no fruit

B. High risk, high reward

C. Easy come, easy go.

D. First come, first served

57. Which is the quietest and easiest scenic spot for visitors?

A. Subline Point

B. The Three Sisters

C. Katoomba Waterfall

D. Hargraves Lookout

B

Vaccines are substances that help the body fight off diseases and illnesses. In the past they have helped

save millions of lives around the world.

Diseases are often caused by bacteria or viruses that attack the human body. A vaccine is a dead or very weak form of such a virus. When you get a vaccination from your doctor the body it gets used to these weaker viruses and can produce antibodies which stay active for a long time. When the real virus or bacteria attack,

the body becomes immune and can defend itself.

People can get their vaccinations in many forms. Very often the vaccine is injected into your body, but vaccines are also taken by mouth or are breathed in.

Although many vaccines protect you throughout your

life, some provide immunity for only a certain time. Vaccines against the flu must be administered every year, because the flu virus can change or may appear in a different form.

Most people already have a certain amount of immunity in their bodies. It is passed to them from their mother. However, these antibodies do not protect a baby for a long time, so that many vaccines are given to infants

in their first years.

Some illnesses only occur in certain areas. If you travel, for example, to tropical regions, you should get vaccines to protect you from yellow fever, malaria or hepatitis.

Vaccines have virtually put an end to many diseases. Smallpox, for example, was once one of the world’s most serious diseases, which killed millions every year. By

the end of the 1970s smallpox had disappeared completely because nearly everyone was vaccinated.

The first vaccines were created towards the end of

the 18th century. An English scientist, Edward Jenner, carried out experiments with cowpox, a milder form of smallpox. He found out that people who got cowpox rarely got ill from smallpox. In France, Louis Pasteur developed a weak form of rabies to protect people from dog bites. In the 20th century polio has been wiped out completely.

Today there are vaccines for many illnesses. The most common are the flu, cholera, the plague , hepatitis.

Although vaccination is widely available and a part of

the regular health program in almost all industrial countries, there are still countries, especially in the Third World where people die of serious diseases. About three million children each year are killed by diseases

that could have been prevented. In developing countries almost two thirds of all children are not vaccinated. The World Health Organization is fighting to provide vaccines for these children.

58. Which paragraph of the passage gives the principle

of vaccines?

A. Paragraph 1

B. Paragraph 2

C. Paragraph 3

D. Paragraph 4

59. Which is true according to the passage?

A. One should receive all kinds of vaccines to stay

fully healthy.B. Those who have got smallpox will never suffer from cowpox.

C. Everyone all over the world can benefit greatly from vaccines.

D. People have become free from some illnesses due to vaccines.

60. Which of the following would be the proper title

for the passage?

A. Some Diseases Have Disappeared

B. Vaccines Protect Us from Diseases

C. You Should Develop Your Immunity

D. Poor Children Are in Need of Vaccines

C

Books were the primary source of intellectual entertainment just a hundreds years ago, but it is a disappointment that people read less often in these days of widespread technological reliance. However, I believe

that books are an irreplaceable part of our lives, and the role that good books play in the personal growth

and development of a particular person throughout one’s

life is a remarkable one.

Books expand our knowledge and conception of the world around us. One may argue that films and TV documentaries do that too, but I believe that books are

a much better alternative, since they allow each reader

to experience the same story using one’s own imagination. The experience achieved through reading is richer and

more personal, since the same description and the same word choice will result in as many different

interpretations as there are readers. We are all unique, and books allow us to experience whatever is written in the light of our own personal values, through our ideas and our imagination.

In addition books enrich our vocabulary, introduce us

to new concepts and offer a wider choice of words to us. Watching certain TV programs and documentary films

can also widen one’s vocabulary, but hardly as

effectively as books do, since reading operates with both more sophisticated visual and audio(if reading aloud) receptor. Moreover, our imagination reproduces mental

picture of what we are reading about, so a new word automatically links to a certain image and a particular emotion that it relates to.

And also, books are a fantastic source of inspiration. Unlike fine art, architecture or travelling, books help

us create our own mental illustration for what we read

on paper. In a way, books make us all artists and creators of our own mental cartoons, movies or

illustration collections. Every image we create ourselves

is automatically given a certain emotion, whether a

simple or a more complicated one. Every mental image

that a written word projects is full of life and energy with emotions. This is what makes books powerful and memorable. Books are an endless source of inspiration and motivation to become a better person.

I’m certain that creating a system of symbols and eventually an alphabet, words, and books was the greatest series of inventions of humankind. Good books do not

have an experience date and will be priceless for any generation. They will continue sparking new ideas,

inspiring new deeds and enriching the lives of every generation to come. I am positive that books will eventually regain their popularity with today’s youth, since books are those roots to which people will go back, in search of the motivation, inspiration and aspiration, to find the true meaning and value of life.

61. The passage conveys to us the idea that _____.

62. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.

A. people watch movies simply for pleasure

B. a good story gives all of you one feeling

C. the process of reading is that of thinking

D. every book should have its unique style

63. It is implied in the passage that ____.

A. television programs provide the viewers with a limited vocabulary

B. visual and audio receptors aren’t used together when we watch TV

C. the context of a story makes it easy for us to understand new words

D. feelings are one of the factors that help us to understand new words

64. According to the passage, ____.

A. people do not read as many books as they used to

B. books contribute a lot to our becoming real artists

C. any books has its own value and will never die out

D. broad knowledge makes books widely influential

D

Living to Tell the Tale is the first book in

a planned trilogy(三部曲) that will make up the

memoirs(回忆录)of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the famous Colombian writer who initially won public praise in the mid-1960s for his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude.

At that time, Garcia Marquez, a journalist and writer

had never sold more than 700 copies of a book. While driving his family through Mexico, he had a real brainstorm. He remembered his grandmother’s storytelling technique---to recall fantastic, improbable events as if they had actually happened---literally. He turned the car around and drove back home to begin One Hundred Years

of Solitude in a new way. To my mind it is one of

the 20th century’s best works of fiction, and won

Garcia Marquez the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Living to Tell the Tale relates the early years of the author’s life, although some of the book’s most important incidents happened earlier than Garcia Marquez’s birth. The impact of these experiences, the people and their stories were to have a powerful effect on him, as a man and as a writer. This is the tale of his parents’love , marriage and the birth of their children. It tells of his early years which were spent

in Aracataca, in the home of his grandparents.

His grandfather, Colonel Nicolas Ricardo Marquez Mejia,

was a soldier of the Thousand Days’War. He was supposedly a storyteller of great reputation. He told his young grandson that there was no greater burden than to have killed a man. Later Garcia Marquez would put these words into the mouths of his characters. His grandmother, Tranquilina Iguaran Cotes, also had a major influence on Garcia’s life. No matter how fantastic her statements were, she always delivered them as if they were the absolute truth. This was the style which was to affect Garcia Marquez’s fiction, sometimes called “magical realism”.The woman filled the house with stories of ghosts and future signs, all of which were ignored by her husband. He had little interest in “women’s beliefs”.

In 1940, when he was 13, Garcia was awarded a scholarship to a secondary school for gifted students. It was during his school years, 1940s and 50s, that he was

first drawn to poetry, a national obsession in Colombia. He and his friends, fellow students, would read aloud

and discuss poetry late into the night. Too poor to buy his own books, Gabriel would read novels borrowed from friends.

While still a boy, he decided he wanted to be

a writer. The people who surrounded him in his childhood later became instrumental when developing the characters

and the storylines for his novels. Love In the Time of Cholera was inspired by the romance between his mother

and father. And his grandfather, who had twelve children (some say 16), became Colonel Aureliano Buendia in One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Garcia Marquez began Living to Tell the Tale, however, not with his real birth in 1928, but with his “b irth as a writer”,at age 22. he and his mother

took a trip from Baranquilla, where he was working as a reporter, to his childhood home in Aracataca. They were going to sell the old house. Vivid memories were stirred up here, memories which electrified his imagination. This trip was to change the course of his writing life.

Living to Tell the Tale is not a conventional literary memoir. It is a magical combination of memoir

and national history written in the author’s remarkable voice. It is his personal mythology. In spite of poverty, Garcia Marquez acknowledged his early years were filled

with joy, a sense of well-being and encouragement from many people.

65. The storytelling technique of Marquez’s grandmother

is mentioned to show that ______.

C. she encouraged Marquez to create more fantastic

stories

based on Marquez’s grandfather. 68. What can be learnt about Living to Tell the Tale?
