My father loves his garden. He planted someseeds in it. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirtexcited him so much.

Unfortunately, in early May, my father wasseriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My motherhad several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’twant my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden untilhe recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as longas they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think muchabout the garden.

One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!”I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce leavesand carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all overthem!

I panicked for a moment but then I quietly wentto the nearest store to buy some vegetables.

When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh,Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can’t believe the carrots are this bigalready. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a littlebit guilty.

Coming home, my mother saw the bag from thesupermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and I admitted, “Dad wanted a salad, but thegarden was a disaster. I didn’t want to disappoint him, so I went to the store.” She laughed but promisedto help me in the garden and weeks later I was finally able to pick some.

I carefully made a salad and took it to myfather. He looked at it with a hint of a smile. “Christine, the carrots are smaller in thissalad, but they taste better.”

Now, I better understand how putting a lot ofeffort into caring for something can help you appreciate the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father’slove of gardening.

Tiny as they are, batshave the ability to “see” in the dark by using aspecial skill called echolocation .They make noises and wait for sound waves, or an echo, to bounceback off objects. They can tell the distance of various objects by how quicklythe sound waves bounce back off them. If no sound bounces back, they can thenfly forward.

This special ability hasbeen copied in the human world for a long time, such as in submarines andplanes. But apart from helping vehicles “see” where they are, what ifblind people could use echolocation for themselves? American Daniel Kish, whois blind, is known as “Batman”. This isn’t because hewalks around in a cape and a mask, but because hehas a bat-like ability to locate where he is through sharp clicks he makes bymoving his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Kish is so skilled atecholocating that he can ride a bike and hike on his own.

Recently, a researchcarried out at the University of Durham in England shed some light on the powerof human echolocation. Kish, as well as other volunteers, worked with a groupof scientists who studied the way blind people listen to the echoes that theyproduce from clicks. The team found that people were capable of hearing evenvery faint echoes, ones far fainter than had been previously thought.

Lore Thaler, lead scientist of the group, said, “We found that in someconditions, they were really faint—about 95 percent softer than the actua lclicks, but the echolocators were still able to sense this.”

Andrew Kolarik, anotherexpert in echolocation, told BBC News that

echolocation “can be very useful atproviding information at face or chest height” and could help people “avoid objects like low hanging branches that might not get detected by the cane or a guide dog”

According to BBC News, echolocation is a skill blind people can acquire and develop, just likelearning a language. As Kolarik said, “Teaching echolocationskills could provide blind people with the means of exploring new places.”

(1)What does “this special ability” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A . The ability to make noises in the dark.

B . The ability to bounce back off objects.

C . The ability to measure the distance quickly.

D . The ability to use sound waves to echolocate.

(2)What do we know about Daniel Kish from the text?

A . He is fond of riding a bike and hiking alone.

B . He is called “Batman” because he looks like a bat.

C . He is able to hear echoes he produces from clicks.

D . He conducted the experiment to circulate echolocation.

(3)What is Kolarik’s attitude towards the future use of echolocation in blind people?

A . Hopeful.

B . Ambiguous.

C . Tolerant.

D . Doubtful.

(4)What’s the best title for the text?

A . Echolocation in Human World

B . Finding New Way to “See”

C . A Very Special Batman

D . A Breakthrough in Echoing

The evidence for harmonymay not be obvious in some families. But it

seems that four out of five youngpeople now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularlyheld image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless familyquarrels.

An important new studyinto teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is moreharmonious than it has ever been in the past. “We were surprised by justhow positive today’s young people see m to be about their families,” said one member of theresearch team. “They’re expected to berebellious and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds:they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school isserving them wel l. There’s more negotiation and discussion between parents andchildren, and children expect to take part in the family decision-makingprocess. They don’t want to rock the boat.”

So, it seems that thisgeneration of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treattheir children as friends. “My parents are happy todiscuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-oldDaniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I’mgoing out clubbing. As long as they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Crome, who is now21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as longas I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think mygrandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”

Maybe this positive viewof family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea ofteenagers’ rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A

researcher comments, “Our surprise that teenagerssay they get along we ll with their parents comes because of a brief period inour social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But thatidea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happenedduring one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situationthroughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the familybusiness to taking it over.”

(1)What is the popular images of teenagers today?

A . They always worry about school.

B . They dislike living with their parents.

C . They have to be locked in to avoid troubles.

D . They quarrel a lot with other family members.

(2)The study shows that teenag ers don’t want to ______.

D . make family decisions

(3)Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today’s parents _____.

A . care less about their children’s life

9. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A few years ago, I hadtaken a part-time job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From insidethe store, I’d begun to see the people rushing by

outside. Then an elderlywoman caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of step, she moved with deliberation. The elderly woman hadcome into the store along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was clearly impatient, checking her watch every few seconds.

The older woman thenseparated from the younger one and began to tick through the DVDs on thenearest shelf, obviously expecting someone else to help. After the slightesthesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. Thewoman smiled up at me and showed me a title scrawledon a piece of paper. It wasa bit unclear to make out. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little aboutmovies, about quality. Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman,I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it.

Looking back, I think Iwanted to enjoy her company for a moment. Something about her deliberatemovements reminded me of my own mother, who’d passed away the previousChristmas. As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced her to thedifferent sections: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, sciencefiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.

We found the movie, andI complimented her on her choice. She smiled and told me it was one she’denjoyed when she was her daughter’s age and that she hoped she would enjoy itas much as she had. Maybe, she said with a hint of wistfulness , her daughter could enjoyit with her own young children. Then, when the older woman’s turn in line came, she paid in cash, counting

out the dollars and coins with the same sureness she’ddisplayed earlier.

注意:

1)续写短文的词数150左右;

2)续写部分分为两段,每段的开头已为你写好。

Paragraph 1:

As the cashier put theDVD into a plastic bag, I walked over to the younger woman.

Paragraph 2:

The elderly woman movedwith her deliberate slowness back to her daughter.

期中英语考试卷及答案

英语期中考试试卷 Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
