After Maggie Doyne graduated from high school, she decided to spend a year traveling the world before starting college. The journey changed her life and the lives of hundreds of orphaned children forever.

In 2006, Doyne took a trip in Nepal, Asia. Having grown up in New Jersey, Doyne was shocked to see so many orphaned children living on the streets. She wanted to do something about it. Doyne used her savings to buy an acre of land. Then, she built the kids a home, the Kopila Valley Children's Home.

Now, the Do Something foundation is doing something for Doyne. The organization provides resources and support for teens that want to make a difference in the world. On Thursday night, the foundation named Doyne the $100,000 prize winner of the 2009 Do Something Award.

The Kopila Valley Children's Home officially opened its doors in 2008. Doyne, now 22 years old, cares for 26 kids. She has helped more than 700 other orphans find families. She also runs a program that provides scholarships for needy families to send their children to school. The children learn basic skills such as sewing and cooking. They also grow their own food in their garden and raise farm animals.

Doyne admits that she didn't have it all figured out when she first arrived in Nepal. "I just felt that there was something there for me," she said. Her parents were supportive of her. But it was a challenge to convince other adults that an 18-year-old girl could accomplish such a big project. Still, Doyne never gave up on fund raising. In just over a year, she had enough money to build her dream home.

"When all the kids are sitting at the table for breakfast, or they're happy and all dancing . . . it's the best feeling in the world." she says.

What's black and orange and growing for the first time in decades? India's tiger population! On Monday, officials announced the results of the latest tiger count. The census(统计) totaled 1,706 tigers in forests across the Asian country—about 300 more than four years ago. "These numbers give us hope for the future of tigers in the world," said Jim Leape, international director of the World Wildlife Fund.

A century ago, about 100,000 tigers lived in India's forests. But by 2002, a count showed that there were only 3,600 left. The number dropped to 1,411 in 2007. What caused India's tiger population to shrink so dramatically?

More than anything else, experts say, development has taken a toll. People have moved into tiger territory and destroyed much of the animal's habitat. Today, tigers live on a just small part of the land they occupied 100 years ago.

Illegal hunting has also contributed to the decline. Poachers(盗猎者) can demand high fees for tiger parts, which are a key ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. The parts from one tiger can sell for tens of thousands of dollars.

India's news is a step in the right direction. But while the number of tigers has increased there in the last four years, the animals' habitat has shrunk. Roads and construction projects have blocked off many tiger corridors—routes used by the big cats to go from one forest to another. "Securing these corridors should be taken up as a priority," says Rajesh Gopal, of the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

Last November, leaders from the 13 countries that are home to wild tigers met in St. Petersburg, Russia, to develop a plan to help the endangered cats. They set a goal to double the world's tiger population by the year 2022. Will we reach that goal? With India's tiger population on the rise and conservationists around the world focused on helping the big cats, it seems it just might happen.

63. The underlined word ―shrink‖ in Paragrap h 2 most probably means .

A. develop

B. reduce

C. disappear

D. remove

64. Which is one of the reasons why India's tiger population declines?

A. Some living areas of India's tigers are destroyed by humans.

B. Roads and construction projects have bridged tiger corridors.

C. Some India's tigers have been hunted for to attract visitors.

D. Too many tigers are used in making traditional Chinese medicine.

65. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A. 1,411 India’s tigers were kill ed between 2002 and 2007

B. Rajesh Gopal is in charge of the World Wildlife Fund

C. the world's tiger population will surely be doubled by 2022

D. international efforts are being made to protect India's tigers

66. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of India's tigers?

A. Critical

B. Objective

C. Optimistic

D. Concerned

If you are a fan of the Newbery-Award winning book Bridge to Terabithia, then you're going to love author Katherine Paterson's new creation The Day of the Pelican(鹈鹕). In the book, Paterson takes readers on a journey with 12 year-old Meli Lleshi and her Albanian family of seven.

The family lives in Kosovo, in eastern Europe. The country is at war with neighboring Serbia. Eventually, life becomes too dangerous in Kosovo, so the Lleshis have to pack up and move out of their home. To Meli, leaving meant giving up her whole life. She will have to say goodbye to her friends, home, school and Baba's market. Worse, the family's trouble began, in Meli's mind, when she drew a picture of her teacher with a pelican nose and had to stay after school as punishment.

As the Lleshis travel along the road at night, they come across burning homes and other refugees just like them. Living in a tiny tent surrounded by many other people becomes tiring, and but for Baba's and Mama's efforts to keep the family together, the family would probably have given up. Every night, Meli longs to go home and Baba tells her, "Your home is with your family." With everyone already crowding together for food, now is not the time to complain. The family needs all their courage to keep going. "We have to be very patient and very brave," Meli says.

Soon, traveling from place to place becomes too much of a hassle(争论) and nearly breaks the family apart. Baba makes an important decision. The family will be moving to an exciting new country. There will be no enemies and no one to run from. They will be able to stay in one place and build a new life. Although Meli still longs for home she wonders if this will finally mean freedom for her family.

The Day of the Pelican is a book you won't be able to put down. Those who enjoy realistic fiction will love this moving story about Meli and her family.

67. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

A. To tell us how happy we are to live a peaceful life.

B. To explain how the Lleshis survived the war.

C. To get us to learn about a new book.

D. To introduce a book Bridge to Terabithia

68. Why did the family move to other countries?

A. Because they wanted to find well-paid jobs.

B. Because they had to escape from the war.

C. Because Meli and her family needed food.

D. Because they just looked for adventure.

69. The third paragraph is mainly about _______.

A. Baba’s importance during the trip

B. complaints about the life journey

C. various difficulties as travellers

D. ways to get the family together

70. From the passage we can learn that ______.

A. The Day of the Pelican won the Newbery-Award

B. Meli no longer longs for home in the new place

C. the family found the freedom and settled down

D. without Baba’s encouragement the family would have broken

Lately, there is a rising trend in families choosing to homeschool their child than send their child to a traditional educational institution. Let’s look at some of the benefits of homesch ooling.

1. Flexible Schedule

Homeschooling enables a flexible schedule. 71 With homeschooling, your child can start homeschooling at 9 am or later depending on your preferred schedule. You can schedule your child’s homeschooling education as you see f it with materials or subjects that may be not available in a traditional school.

2. Individual attention

With homeschooling, your child gets all the individual attention. For example, if your child is weak in maths, you could devote more time and energy to teaching maths.

Your child’s homeschooling schedule can be adjusted for that. For example, if your child is better at science than at maths, simply devote more homeschooling hours to maths and cut back on science. With homeschooling, the choice is yours. 72

3. Family Activity

The schooling of the child can become an extended family activity. Examples are field trips and experiments. Plus, the child also receives more quality time with his/her parents. 73 The child is also free of any negative peer pressure or influences.

4. 74

With homeschooling, the child does not need to prove his/her abilities to other children. Parents are able to plan the learning program according to his strengths and weakness.

Parents can also change the curriculum to suit the learning style of the child. 75 Some children even learn better from experiencing or seeing things in action.

A. No peer pressure

B. Religion Learning

C. Traditional schools can’t do that.

D. There is more time for family bonding.

E. For example, the child needn’t wake up at 7 every morning.

F. Plus, it is quite impossible to provide individual attention to all students.

G. For example, some children learn better from reading while others need to write.

Last weekend I went to the Summer Palace as usually. At about noon, I was enjoying my reading near a lake while suddenly I hear someone crying for help. I went up to see what was happening. I was shocking to find a little child struggling in the water in the distance while many peoples were standing by without doing anything. Without any hesitation, I had pushed through the crowd as I took off my coat, but jumped into the water quickly. I managed to reach him and carried him back to safety. To his great relief, the kid was saved.

Text 4

M: According to Professor Thompson, language slowly but constantly develops from all forms into newer ones.

W: That’s my opinion, too. We can easily find new words and new expressions in English.

M: Perhaps that's why new dictionaries are published about every five years.

Text 5

M: It’s eleven thirty in the evening, and I’m so hungry. Can I b uy bread from the store now?

W: No. The store usually closes half an hour earlier.

Text 6

M: Are you all right? You look off color.

W: I’m OK. I feel a bit tired. That’s all.

M: That is because you work too hard, I suppose.

W: I guess so. Do you remember the new student in my class?

M: The boy from Pakistan?

W: Yes, he is having a hard time communicating since he doesn’t speak much English.

M: Do you have any other students from immigrant families in your class?

W: Oh, yes. This year we have a Korean, a Japanese and a Chinese student. I spend a lot of time with them so that they can catch up.

M: I know. It’s very kind of you to help them with their studies.

W: But it’s really rewarding to see them make progress and fit well into the group.

M: That’s true.

Text 7

W: I don't know what I'm going to do. I need to find a job. If I don't, I won't be able to stay here next semester.

W: What do you mean?

M: I mean in the library, what sound an information center.

W: Yes, I know. I tried that but they don’t have anything now. So what can I do?

M: well, since you are a foreign student, it's hard. That's because it's actually illegal for you to

work in America.

W: I know that. That's my problem. I know I have the right to work for the university. That's legal. But they don't have a job for me. And it's illegal for me to get a job elsewhere.

M: Anyway, there must be some solution. I have an idea.

W: What?

M: Since you're Chinese, maybe you can find part-time work in Chinatown.

W: Alex, I’ll help Emma with her packing.

M: The packing? No, no. Don’t worry. We may have to change our plan.

W: Why?

M: We may not go to Scotland; we may go to Wales or England. We can decide after the weather forecast.

W: OK. Is it time to watch the forecast for tomorrow on TV?

M: Yes, listen. Northern Scotland will be cold, and there may be snow over high ground.

W: In the north of England it will be a wet day and rain will move into Wales during the afternoon. M: Eastern England will be generally dry, and it will be a bright clear day with sunshine, but it may rain during the evening.

W: In the southwest of England it may be foggy during the morning, but the afternoon will be clear. It may be windy later in the day.

M: Now, where are we going?

W: It’s up to you.

W: Didn’t you see him?

M: No, I didn’t, I looked in my driving mirror and there was no one coming. Not only that, I also looked in the big mirror on the other side of the road.

It includes airfare ($225), hotel ($170), dining out ($116) and dressing up ($95) and the gift. If you have weddings to attend this year, here are some tips for you to avoid breaking the bank. 1. Book flights in advance The moment you decide to attend a wedding is the time to check flight prices at the best time. Plane fares are higher in the summer, especially in July and August. Booking in advance will save you money, as will watch for sales on lower-cost carriers like JetBlue and Frontier. You can check Google Flights for a calendar of prices showing the cheapest days to fly from apps like Hopper to get real-time alerts when a fare is at its lowest price point. 2. Don't blow your budget on the gift If you've got the money, an expensive gift is lovely. But there's no need to take out loans to prove your love for the happy couple. Skip an expensive necklace by giving (an appropriate amount of) cash instead. To save on the gift, consider making one: A photo album or scrapbook of memories with the bride and groom shows how much you care. You could also share the gift with other guest(s) or even make gifts with DIY ideas by yourself to save money. 3. Use old dresses and suits You don't always have to be on a new dress for a wedding. While men have the option of repeating their suits, women are more likely to spend money on new clothes for the special occasion. But before you take out your wallet, consider reinventing something already in your

英语五种基本句型列式如下: 一:SV(主+谓) 二:SVP(主+系+表) 三:SVO(主+谓+宾) 四:SVoO(主+谓+间宾+直宾) 五:SVOC(主+谓+宾+宾补) 基本句型一:SV(主+谓) 主语:可以作主语的成分有名词(如boy),主格代词(如you),动词不定式,动名词等。 S│V(不及物动词) 1. The sun │was shining. 2. The moon │rose. 3. The universe │remains. 4. We all │breathe, eat, and drink. 5. Who │cares? 6. What he said │does not matter. 7. They │talked for half an hour. 8. The pen │writes smoothly 系动词分两类:be, look, keep, seem等属一类,表示情况;get, grow, become, turn等属另一类,表示变化。 This │is │an English-Chinese dictionary. 2. The dinner │smells │good. 3. He │fell │in love. 4. Everything │looks │different. 5. He │is growing │tall and strong. 6. The trouble│is │that they are short of money. 7. Our well │has gone │dry. 8. His face │turned │red. There be 结构:There be 表示‘存在有’。 There is a boy there.(那儿有一个男孩。)
