I was hired for my first airline job in August, 2009. I had $45,000 of credit card debt. Most of it was from my flight training.

Ten years ago, I was watching TV in my bedroom one day before my flight training began and I saw the second airplane hit the World Trade Center. Then I got the call saying I no longer had a job. My career was destroyed. I had no place to go and ended up moving into my car. I read newspapers to look for a job and I was offered one, which offered me $75,000 a year. But I decided to make a change. I wanted to receive flight training and become a pilot. It was my dream. So I refused the job and chose to work part time. It sounded unbelievable to do such a thing. It was even more so because I was over the age of thirty, but I was determined to make my dream come true. I left the state of Virginia and ended up in Las Vegas.

Though I made about $25,000 a year at that time, I was severely in debt because the fees for training were high. I was living in my truck and sleeping in parking garages. I didn't plan for my life to take this direction, but I insisted on my training. Then at last my world changed and my dream came true. I finally became a pilot.

The passengers that I flew had more money in their pocket than I had in the bank. I hated myself and was worried about my situation, but I never gave up. I kept paying back the debt and I kept saving in the bank. And finally, I paid off my credit card debt.

Today, I am a skilled airline pilot based in Milwaukee. I wrote in my spare time. My autobiography (自传) has been published, which sells well. That is my first book, but it won't be my last one.

In the US, all the states like to promote themselves with a slogan (标语). I now live in Utah, whose slogan is "Life Elevated". It's a nod to outdoor recreation in the high country. Years ago, I lived in the "Peach State" of Georgia, and I grew up in New Mexico, whose slogan is "Land of Enchantment (魅力)". All the slogans show the fun side of the states.

New Mexico is a land of high descrt and it has the beauty of its own. I have never seen such a beautiful sunset before. But this is also a country of wind. We never seemed to get away from dust in New Mexico, so I appreciate the story of a newcomer who learned about dusty breezes. She was visiting an old shop and the owner wiped down every item before showing it. The newcomer said, "Everything gets dusty here pretty quickly, doesn't it?" "That ' s not dust, honey," the shop owner replied. "That's enchantment."

This was a person who said no and turned it into something humorous. There are some things, like the weather, that we cannot change. All we can change is our attitude toward them. I believe one of the best techniques to do this is to find some humor in the situation. Finding the fun side of a difficult or troublesome problem can be one of the most creative and effective things that we can do.

A Hong Kong shopping center manager was informed that an escalator broke. He posted a sign to warn customers. He didn't choose io use the traditional "Out of Order" or "Do Not Use" warnings. Instead, his sign read, " This escalator is temporarily (暂时地) a stairway." He turned a minus into humor and made it a plus. Sometimes the only sense that you can make of a situation is

a sense of humor.

41. Why did the writer mention the slogans in Pardgaph l?

A. To tell us about his life.

B. To help us know the US better.

C. To lead to the topic of the passage.

D. To explain the function of slogans.

42. In the writer's opinion, the shop owner's answer __________.

A. would make the woman very angry

B. tumed something bad into something humorous

C. proved New Mexico was a nice place to live

D. showed that he didn't like living in New Mexico

43. When we are in a bad situation, the writer suggests that we __________.

A. ask for help at once

B. not do anything

C. treat it very carelessly

D. treat it in a relaxing way

44. What does the writer think of the manager's action?

A. He thinks the manager behaved like a kid.

B. He thinks the manager reacted in a very good way.

C. He thinks the manager didn't express himself clearly.

D. He thinks the manager should have used an "Out of Order" sign.

45. What would br the best title for this passage?

A. Finding the fun side.

B. Making fun of ourselves. .

C. Slogans of some American states.

D. Examples of humor.

Distance learning is defined as a form of education in which the source of information or knowledge and the students are separated by time and space. Hence online learning, e-learning, and home learning are all included in distance learning. As opposed to distance learning, classroom learning is the traditional method of teaching or education in which all the students of a course are united in a class with a teacher. Classroom learning is something we are all familiar with, for we all have received a major chunk of our primary education by attending classes in a classroom.

Distance education, it is claimed, was first offered by the University of London as early as the 1850s. However, it is a concept that is gaining popularity now. For people who cannot leave their jobs but want to continue their studies, this is a very convenient option. It is also a good choice for housewives who are not able to enroll in courses because they have to take care of young children. As people are becoming more receptive to new ways and methods of learning, distance leaming is gaining more followers. However, some people still believe in the old school method of classroom learning.

第二节读写任务(One possible version)

This passage mainly tells us what distance learning is and what classroom learning is. Classroom learning is a traditional way we are familiar with, but now distance learning is very popular.

Let's have a brief look at the advantages of distance learning. First, when you are studying in a distance learning program, you can study at your own pace. Second, you can choose your study hours. Third, distance learning saves you a lot of time. Also, you can choose a study environment you are most comfortable with.

The most significant disadvantage of distance learning is that there is no teacher. With no teacher around, you have to learn completely on your own. Also, you may miss communicating with teachers and classmates.

As for me, I like classroom learning more. A teacher can guide me well. Also, a classroom provides the perfect setting for group study.
