老师询问学生过去某一时刻学生在做什么,或者是学生的家人在做什么。例如,What were you doing at ten o’clock last Saturday morning? What was your father doing at ten o’clock last Sunday afternoon?

四、教材精华

1. So, what were you doing when the UFO arrived?那么,当飞碟到达的时候你正在做什么?

(1)本句中的So为语气词,没有实际意思,常用于表达惊讶或者领会。So, you stayed there all the time.那么,你一直待在那儿。

(2)本句是一个含有when引导的时间状语从句的复合句。when意为“当……的时候”,多指具体时间点,它所引导的从句中的谓语动词可以是延续性动词,也可以是非延续性动词。We were playing outside when it began to rain.我们正在外边玩,这时天开始下雨了。

2.The boy was walking down the street when⑦a UFO landed. 这个男孩正沿街散步,这时一个飞碟降落了。

when在此句中用作并列连词,意为“就在这/那时”,连接两个并列句。

The students were running along the street when a car stopped in front of them.

学生们正在沿着大街跑步,这时一辆小汽车停在了他们前面。

3. You can imagine how strange it was!你能想象它有多么奇怪!

本句中的感叹句how strange it was是宾语从句,作动词imagine的宾语。how strange it was的感叹句句式结构为“How+形容词/副词+主语+谓语!”。

【拓展】感叹句的另一种形式是由what引导的,其结构为“What+ a/an+形容词+名词(+主语+谓语)!”。

What a nice day it is!多好的一天啊!

4. Isn’t that amazing!那是不是太令人惊奇了!

此句为否定疑问句结构,其用法为:

(1)否定疑问句表示感叹,相当于陈述句,但比陈述句语气更强烈,感情更丰富。Aren’t the flowers beautiful! 这些花太美了!

(2)否定疑问句也可以表示询问,意为“难道不……?”其答语在形式上与一般疑问句的答语一样,肯定回答用yes,否定回答用no。但翻译成汉语时,yes 要译成“不”,no要译成“是的”。

—Can’t you speak English?难道你不会说英语吗?

—Yes, I can./No, I can’t.不,我会。/是的,我不会。

5. Davy met another dog outside the station. 戴维在火车站外又遇到了另外一

条狗。

本句中another在本句中为形容词,意为“又一个,再一个”,修饰事物或人都可以,其后接单数名词或代词,也可与基数词加复数名词连用,即“another+基数词+可数名词复数”,表示“还有几个……,再有几个……”,此时可与“基数词+more+可数名词复数”互换。

【注意】在表达不可数名词“再一些……,又一些……”时,只能用some more,即“some more+不可数名词”。

过去进行时

(一)过去进行时的构成

过去进行时“was/were+动词-ing形式”构成。以动词work为例,其肯定式、否定式、疑问式以及简略答语见下表:

过去进行时表示过去某一时刻或某一段时间正在进行的动作。这一特定的过去时间,除有上下文暗示以外,一般用时间状语来表示。

你们昨天的这个时间在做什么?

He was mending his bike at five o’clock yesterday.
