As evening was falling, Jane Grace and her husband, Petty, were trucking through northern Kentucky transportation auto parts from Louisville to Detroit for a goods company at dusk, “Petty, wake up!” she shouted. “There’s a truck on fire!”

Inside the burning truck, Ronnie Sanders, 38, was fighting for his life. He’d been running a heavy load of tractors and forklifts from Georgia to Indianapolis when a van in front of him stopped suddenly in traffic on the icy road. As Ronnie bore down, he could see children in the backseat. The truck’s mass would probably protect him from the worst of the impact, but the force of 23 tons would likely crush everyone inside the van.

“I fig ured instead of killing other people, I’d just put the truck in the ditch.” At the bottom, rocks cut a fuel tank, which caught fire. A tree branch destroyed the windshield and knocked Ronnie unconscious. He came to life a couple of minutes later to find the cabin flames and his legs on fire.

Petty dashed to Ronnie, who was hanging headfirst from the passenger door. Ronnie had used his pocket knife to cut himself free from the driver’s side seat belt only to get his boot trapped in another one. Petty climbed into the burning cab to free him.

He tried three times to pull Ronnie out before finally freeing him. But Ronnie’s legs were still burning, so Petty laid him on the ground, ripped off his own shirt, and beat the flames with it. He’d managed to drag him about 20 yards when one of the truck’s 150 gallon fuel tanks exploded.

Both Petty and Ronnie paid a price for risking their lives for strangers. Ronnie spent two months in the hospital and received skin grafts(移植) on both of his legs. Petty suffered smoke breathing and minor burns, and shrapnel from the fuel tank explosion broke a tooth.

In February, the Graces received a Hero of the Highway award from the Open Road Foundation for rescuing an injured driver. Petty insists Ronnie is the real hero: “If he hadn’t gone into the ditch, he would have hit that van. It was his decision to drive off the road.”

“I feel pretty good about it,” says Ronnie. “A lot of people could have been hurt.”

A study by Oxford University Press (OUP) into British children’s writing shows that the future of written English will learn more from Hollywood films than Dickens or Shakespeare.

Researchers who looked at the analysis of 74,000 short stories in a national competition found the children were increasingly using American words such as garbage, trash can, sidewalk, candy, and flashlight. The stories, written by pupils aged 7 to 13, show how fairy cakes are referred to as cupcakes and a dinner jacket has become a tuxedo(晚礼服). “Smart”is now often used as “clever”.

Chris Evans, whose radio show runs the competition, said the results were “interesting”, adding, “Who’d have thought that the popular American musician Simon Cowell and Argentinean footballer Lionel Messi would be among the famous names that come up in children’s work repeatedly?”

But according to the study, pupils are let down by some basic knowledge of English. Children are not familiar with simple spellings such as “does” and “clothes” and struggle to use the past tense correctly.

Researchers also found that punctuation(标点)was underused, especially semi-colons and speech marks. Some did not know how to use capital letters. However, exclamation(感叹)marks were overused. Researchers found 35,171 examples in total, with some young writers using five at a time.

Popular US fiction such as the Twilight vampire novels and films is thought to be fuelling the increasing use of American vocabulary and spelling. Modern technology is also influential. Out of almost 300 references to “blackberry”, nearly half refer to mobile phones. Characters frequently “google”for information or use “apps”. But the researchers found a wealth of

imaginative and inventive ideas.

Fears that texting was corrupting children’s written work were unfound, they said, with youngsters only using text-expressions when they were referring to a text message.

Samantha Armstrong, of the OUP children’s dictionaries division, said, “We should accept the facts calmly. Perhaps we are catching a glimpse of the language of the future.”

60. The study of Oxford University Press shows that _______.

A. British children are losing interest in classical literature.

B. British children don’t like English films or English literature.

C. British children’s writing is getting worse and worse.

D. British children’s writing is highly influenced by modern American culture.

61. What makes Chris Evans feel surprised?

A. The national competition is so helpful to children’s writing.

B. Some famous foreigners often appear in children’s stories.

C. Children’s work are popular with the great successful people.

D. There are good ideas and rich vocabulary in children’s works.

62. According to the passage, which of the following parts should the children improve?

A. Handwriting.

B. Reading.

C. Grammar.

D. Pronunciation.

63. What’s Samantha Armstrong’s attitude towards the findings?

A. Doubtful.

B. Neutral

C. Negative

D. Supportive

Chinese media and Internet users on Monday condemned(谴责) a lack of morals in society after a toddler(学步的小孩)was struck twice by two different vans and left bleeding on the road as more than a dozen bystanders did nothing to help the seriously injured girl.

The incident, captured by a surveillance camera and aired by Southern Television Guangdong (TVS), showed the two-year-old girl was knocked down and run over by a white van on a narrow market street on the afternoon of Oct. 13, in Foshan City of Guangdong Province.

The driver fled the scene of the accident, leaving the girl to bleed on the sidewalk. Over the next six minutes, more than a dozen people walked by the girl, yet not one individual did anything to help her. The girl was then hit a second time by another van before an elderly trash collector came to her aid and brought the atte ntion of the girl’s mother, according to the video and eyewitnesses.

Doctors said that the girl, who was put on life support after being hospitalized, remains in

a deep coma. The girl’s parents, who are migrants living in the city, are now with her. Police said the drivers of both vehicles have been arrested. However, the indifference of the bystanders shown in the video has shocked the public, as Internet forums have boiled with anger, and people are questioning the morality of society.

High moral standards were once triumphed as national pride in China where individuals known for selflessly helping others were adored by the public. But in recent years, the perception of a decline of morals has become a hot topic as profit and materialism are recogniz ed to be affecting society’s values.

On Sept. 2. an 88-year-old man in central China collapsed, his face striking the pavement. Yet, no one came to his aid, and he ended up choking to death on the blood from his nose. Some have linked the absence of good models to a previous case in which a man trying to help an elderly woman who fell was accused of harming her.

A strong chorus of opinion on the Internet says laws should exempt(免除)models from responsibility, yet laws themselves cannot solve society’s morali ty dilemma.

Cao Lin, a China Youth Daily commentator, said in a signed article published on Monday that the worry of responsibility should not be an excuse for not helping, and this case exposes the decline of humanity in Chinese society.

64. In recent yea rs, society’s values are believed to be affected by________.

A. people’s awareness

B. the indifference of bystanders

C. profit and materialism

D. the morals of society

65. According to Cao Lin, what is the fundamental reason for not helping the girl?

A. The worry of responsibility.

B. Lack of laws that exempt role models from responsibility.

C. The fear of being accused of harming her.

D. The decline of humanity in society.

66. Where is the article probably taken from?

A. A news report.

B. A fashion magazine.

C. A science fiction.

D. An education column.

Though the next 5 billion people who connect to the Internet will experience a better quality of life and improve society, technological advances can also “empower some terrorists”, Eric Schmidt, leader of Google, said on Tuesday.

Co-author of the recently published The New Digital Age, Schmidt explored the promise and the hidden trouble of a completely connected world. “The terrorists can get phones, too,”

he said. “But terrorists will make mistakes, and it’ll be possible to track them down”

He cited the Boston Marathon bombing investigation, which got quick results by broadcasting and sharing photos of the suspects. In another case, police also said the victim left his cell phone on, which allowed them to track the suspect’s vehicle and arrest the suspect at last.

Jared Cohen, founder of Google Ideas and Schmidt’s co-author, said, “It’s going to be difficult for criminals and terrorists to operate off the Internet. When individuals that do criminal activity are using technology, the room for error goes up.”

“The biggest thing that Google and other companies can offer is the mobile device you carry, which you’ll become even more dependent upon,” Schmidt predicted. “It can remember things …and make suggestions that surprise you.”

“Privacy and security are the ultimate shared responsibility between companies, government, and the people who are actually using the tools,”Cohen, The New Digital Age co-author, said. “More connectivity doesn’t remove the importance of human judgment in the future.”

He predicted that parents are going to have to educate their children about online privacy and security perhaps years before having “the talk” about the sex education.

“It’ll be a long time before the machines take over the world,” Schmidt said. “The main problem in society is not that the machines are taking over the world, but rather, automated machines are taking over some low-skilled jobs.”

“The answer to that, of course, is education,” he added.

67. According to the passage, The New Digital Age _______.

A. was written for children

B. is an official report from Google

C. has more than one author

D. is very popular recently

68. What can we know about the future of mobile devices according to what Schmidt said?

A. Mobile devices will probably become more portable.

B. Mobile devices will greet you every morning.

C. Mobile devices can offer us some good advice.

D. Mobile devices can help us find information quickly.

69. It can be inferred form the passage that_______.

A. the development of technology is facing a great obstacle

B. criminals escape from the police taking advantage of high-tech

C. criminals making use of technology are easy to be tracked

D. criminals and terrorists seldom operate on the Internet

70. The passage is mainly to_______.

A. tell readers how police can clear up a case by technology

B. show the benefits and risks of a largely-connected world

C. explain why privacy and security are important on Internet

D. introduce what advantage the Internet will bring us in the future

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
