Tristan da Cunha, a 38-square-mile island, is the farthest inhabited island in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. It is 1,510 miles southwest of its nearest neighbor, St. Helena, and 1,950 miles west of Africa. Discovered by the Portuguese admiral(葡萄牙海军上将) of the same name in 1506 and settled in 1810, the island belongs to Great Britain and has a population of a few hundred.

Coming in a close second—and often wrongly mentioned as the most distant island—is Easter Island, which lies 1,260 miles east of its nearest neighbor—Pitcairn Island, and 2,300 miles west of South America. The mountainous 64-square-mile island was settled around the 5th century, supposedly, by people who were lost at sea. They had no connection with the outside world for more than a thousand years, giving them plenty of time to build more than 1,000 huge stone figures, called moat, for which the island is most famous.

On Easter Sunday, 1722, however, settlers from Holland moved in and gave the island its name. Today, 2,000 people live on the Chilean territory(智利领土). They share one street, a small airport and a few hours of television per day.

21.It can be learned from the text that the island of Tristan da Cunha .

Children have their own rules in playing games. They seldom need a referee and rarely trouble to keep scores. They don't care much about who wins or loses, and

it doesn't seem to worry them if the game is not finished. Yet, they like games that depend a lot on luck, so that their personal abilities cannot be directly compared. They also enjoy games that move in stages, in which each stage, the choosing of leaders, the picking-up of sides, or the determining of which side shall start, is almost a game in itself.

Grown-ups can hardly find children's games exciting, and they often feel puzzled at why their kids play such simple games again and again. However, it is found that a child plays games for very important reasons. He can be a good player without having to think whether he is a popular person, and he can find himself being a useful partner to someone of whom he is ordinarily afraid. He becomes a leader when it comes to his turn. He can be confident, too, in particular games, that it is his place to give orders, to pretend to be dead, to throw a ball actually at someone, or to kiss someone he has caught.

It appears to us that when children play a game they imagine a situation under their control. Everyone knows the rules, and more importantly, everyone plays according to the rules. Those rules may be childish, but they make sure that every child has a chance to win.

24. What is true about children when they play games?

A. They don't need rules.

B. They want to pick a better team.

C. They can test their personal abilities.

D. They can stop playing any time they like.

25. To become a leader in a game the child has to ________.

A. play well

B. wait for his turn

C. be confident in himself

D. be popular among his playmates

26. The writer believes that ________.

A. children play games without reasons

B. children's games can do them a lot of good

C. children should invite grown-ups to play with them

D. children should make better rules for their games

C

Being considered a leader in our society is indeed of high praise. Leadership means power, commands, respect and, most important, encourages achievement. Unlike vitamin C, leadership skills can’t be easily swallowed down. They must be carefully cultivated.

Different from popular belief, most good leaders are made, not born. They learn their skills in their everyday lives. But which do they develop? How do they (and how can you) get others to follow?

Always give credit. Many leaders note that the most efficient way to get a good performance from others is to treat them like heroes. Giving public credit to someone who has earned it is the best leadership technique in the world. It is also an act of generosity (慷慨) that’s never forgotten.

Giving credit is more effective than even the most constructive criticism (批评), which often hurts rather than helps. Kenneth Blanchard, the author of The One-Minute Manager, agrees, “Catch people doing something right!” he says. Then tell everyone about it.

Take in formed risks. “The best leaders know that taking a risk is not a thoughtless exercise,” says management adviser Marilyn Machlowitz. “Sky divers don’t go up in an airplane without checking the parachutes beforehand.”

Because the idea of risk also carries with it the possibility of failure, many of us usually wait for others to take charge. But if you want to be a leader, you must learn to fail—and not die a thousand deaths. Pick yourself up and start all over again.

Encourage enthusiasm. “When people understand the importance of work, they lend their mental strengths,” says Lee Ducat. But when they get excited about the work, all their energy gets poured into the job. That’s a great force! Is this the best way to create excitement? Be enthusiastic yourself—You will be followed by everyone.

27. The underlined word "cultivated" ( paragraph 1 ) roughly means ________.

A. compared

B. developed

C. examined

D. encouraged

28. The part "Always give credit" tells us that a leader should ________.

A. praise everyone

B. give helpful criticism

C. regard others as real heroes

D. praise people for their good performances

29. To be a good leader, you should ________.

A. not be afraid of any risks

B. think twice before taking risks

C. try to avoid any possible failures

D. know what a thoughtless exercise is

30. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. How to Be a Leader

B. Not Many Can Be Leaders

C. Leadership Is Very Important

D. Leadership Is of Skills and Techniques

“Hey!” the voice called from behind me. “Are you a girl or a duck?” I ignored the comments because I knew they were from the mean girl, Betsy. I ran to my class, causing my slight limp(跛行) to become even more apparent. Already, I could see that things would be different here. At my old school, I had a group of friends to protect me. However, in this new school, I was on my own. I took my place in the first row of desks and I was grateful for alphabetic seating. My last name came at the beginning of the alphabet and Betsy’s last name came at the end. As the weeks went on, though, I made friends with two girls named Fran and Lisa who sat near me in class. Whenever Betsy made one of her remarks, they would wave it off and tell me to ignore her.

Still, I hated that I didn’t walk like everyone else. I didn’t like not being able to run as fast or as straight as the other kids and I didn’t like getting picked last for teams in gym class. Mostly, though, I really hated it when people like Betsy

made negative remarks about how I walked.

One day, our teacher asked us to change seats. “Class,” our teacher addressed us one morning, “you’ve been in the same seats for a full semester and you’ve become friendly with the students around you. Now it’s time to change seats and make some new friends.” The class let out a collective moan(抱怨). As she assigned the new seating, Fran, Lisa, and I looked at each other and waited for our names to be called. We didn’t want to be separated. And we especially didn’t want to sit anywhere near Betsy. Finally, Betsy sat directly behind me.

I knew this wasn’t going to be good and I soon discovered I was right. Betsy often leaned into my back: “Quack, quack!” When I ignored he r, she kicked my seat. When that didn’t work, she poked(戳)me. This went on daily until one morning I simply refused to go to school. I told Mom what had happened at school.

Dear Mr. Wang,

Knowing that our library is going to buy books, I’d like to share some suggestions.

What we need most are popular science books which explain basic principles of nature in a simple and interesting way. They help us understand science subjects better and arouse our curiosity about scientific discoveries. In addition to reading for knowledge, we read for fun and inspiration. That is why I recommend literary books. They not only offer us joy and excitement, but also encourage us to think critically.

I’ll be glad if you can consider my recommendation.

Yours sincerely,

Li Yue

My mother sat me down and began to talk. “Look,” she held my hand, “there will always be mean people like Betsy in this world. That is hard to change. But you can change the way you handle them. Have you ever heard of the saying ‘Treat them with kindness’?” I shook my head. “It’s simple. Just show your kindness to the girl now and then. If she drops her pen, pick it up and hand it to her. Things like that. Just be nice to her.”

Then one day I did what my mother taught me and amazing things happened. Our teacher announced seriously that there would be an exam the next morning. As Betsy was not good at study, I offered to help her review. Betsy was surprised but grateful.

She said shyly, “You’re so nice. I truly regret making those rude remarks on you. Can we be friends? ” I was glad that I had followed my mom’s advice. It was just what I needed. And probably just what Betsy needed, too.

高二英语期中考试题 一、阅读理解(共5大题;每小题2分,共40分) A On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin. The music was so great that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man. The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat. Then he began to play the violin. It sounded more pleasant than ever. Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on that paper. It said, "Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim(认领)it soon." After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, "Yes, it's you. I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here." The young violinist asked calmly, "Are you Mr. George Sang?" The man nodded. The violinist asked, "Did you lose something?" "It's a lottery ticket (彩票)," said the man. The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang's name was seen. "Is it?" he asked. George nodded and took the lottery ticket and kissed it, then danced with the violinist. The violinist was a student at an arts college and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna. Later his classmate asked the violinist, "At that time you needed money to pay the tuition (学费)and you had to play the violin in the railway station every day to make money. Why didn't you keep the lottery ticket for yourself?" The violinist said, "Although I don't have much money, I live happily. But if I lose honesty I won't be happy forever." Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us. 1.What did the young artist do at the railway station on Friday?

2021届浙江省宁波市效实中学高三9月月考英语试 题 学校_________ 班级__________ 姓名__________ 学号__________ 一、阅读选择 1. Cycling has become more popular in the UK recently for a number of reasons. One of those must be the British cycling success at both the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and the London Olympic Games in 201 2. Sir Chris Hoy won three gold medals in Beijing and another two in London. He and Jason Kenny are the most successful Olympic cyclists of all time. The UK also won the Tour de Frances six times. Cycling is not just a sport though, and Tony is just one of the many people who like to cycle long distances because they want to enjoy the natural beauty of the UK. He belongs to Sustrans? a volunteer organization created in the 1980s. Sustrans has combined quieter roads and disused railway tracks to create the National Cycle Network of cycle-friendly routes. Cyclists follow these routes to raise money for charity, but also because they enjoy the scenery across England and like to get away from the busy city life. Connie lives and works in London and, like half a million Londoners every day,she travels to and from work by bike. Since the introduction of the Congestion Charge where drivers pay to bring a car into the center of London during working hours in 2003, the capital city has seen an almost 50 percent increase in the number of people traveling by bike. Cycling to work takes the same amount of time as it would by bus or tube. Connie says that cycling is cheaper and keeps her fit, too. Nigel is a campaigner. In addition to traveling to and from work by bicycle, doing some charity rides and generally enjoying cycling, Nigel runs a local campaigning group and helps organize the ‘critical commute’ ---where cyclists gather every last Friday of the month and cycle into work together. For Nigel, cycling is about saving the planet, a cost-effective way of reducing our carbon footprint today.
