近百年来,唐诗在美国的翻译与接受,卷帙浩繁,无以数计。因篇幅所限,这里仅举两个例子。例一是寒山自述诗:时人见寒山,各谓是疯颠。貌不起人目,身唯布裘缠。我语他不会,他语我不言。为报往来者,可来向寒山。”

当代著名诗人、学者斯奈德的英译文是:

When men see Han Shan

They all say he is crazy

And not much to look at—

Dressed in rags and hides

They don't get what I say

And I don't talk their language

All I can say to those I meet

"Try and make it to Cold Mountain."

寒山(生卒年代不详)长期隐居台州始丰(今浙江天台)西之寒岩(即寒山),他形容不整,狂放不羁。其诗长于以通俗机智的语言记述隐逸山林之兴,表现人生哲理等,这首自述诗正是其生动写照。

斯奈德译寒山诗,基本上做到了准确、简洁、优美和传神。寒山原诗是用通俗诙谐的口语体写成,斯奈德译文中They don't get what I say / And I don't talk their language

等正是典型的英语口语。他用And not much to look at— / Dressed in rags and hides 来翻译原诗中“貌不起人目,身唯布裘缠”句,全部使用英语中常用的单音节词汇和简单句式,生动形象地再现了寒山诗中的自我描述。

斯奈德译寒山诗之简洁传神,与原作非常相似。他在促进中美文化交流,尤其是翻译和研究寒山诗方面做出过很大贡献。经他翻译的寒山诗,被当时的美国社会和思想文化界所接受,尤其是对美国在二十世纪五六十年代盛极一时的“垮掉的一代”(Beat Generation),在思想观念和精神境界等方面,更是产生过巨大影响。

宇文所安的英译文是:

宇文氏对中国古典文学尤其对唐诗代诗歌有精深研究,他的译文较好地传达了杜甫原诗的意境和情怀。原诗前半写景,既有微风细草,危樯孤舟的细致,也有明星皓月,平野大江的雄浑;宇文氏用 Stars hang down 译“星垂”,用The moon gushes 译“月涌”,十分生动传神,他用 the breadth of the plain 来再现原野之辽阔,用 the great river's current 来表现大江之奔流,都很简洁而有气势。值得注意的是,宇文氏在传达原诗的意境情致的同时,还试图再现原诗的艺术特色,如译诗的头两行 Slender grasses, breeze faint on the shore; / Here, the looming mast, the lonely night boat. 就是使用“意象叠加”(superposition)的技巧,偏离现代英语的规范,有意不用动词和连接词语,将原诗中四个意象叠加在一起,使读者产生丰富的想象,并感受到中国古诗简洁含蓄,意境深远的特征。原诗后半表现诗人虽有远大的政治抱负,但长期受压抑而不能施展,诗人即景以抒悲怀,抒发内心飘泊无依的无限伤感。宇文氏的译文呈现出这样的情怀,其中Sick, growing old, I must yield up my post. 句用“变异”(deviation)的语序安排,颇有诗意。但是,原诗中“名岂文章著,官应老病休”应是诗人对过去著述与官场生涯的回顾与总结,而宇文氏的译文是My name shall not be known from my writing, 如果跟 My name has not been known from my writing 相比,就成了对未来的展望,是不够确切的。总的来讲,宇

文所安及其他美国汉学家,数十年孜孜不倦,勤奋翻译、研究和传播中国古典文学作品,使中国唐代诗歌在美国被越来越多的读者和学者所接受。

唐代诗歌富含中国传统思想文化和道德观念,内容深刻广泛,形式典雅精美,艺术成就极高。唐诗所具有的独特魅力对美国现代诗学观念和诗歌创作产生了深远影响。受篇幅所限,本节仅举雷克思洛斯和斯奈德两位现代诗人为例。在诗歌创作的思想观念和审美意识上,雷克思洛斯明显接受了中国唐诗的影响。据他自陈,他在道德观念和思想品质上深受杜甫的影响:“杜甫对我影响之巨,无人可及”,“我三十年来一直沉浸在他的诗中,他使我成为一个更为高尚的人,一个道德的代言人”,他沉溺于杜甫诗中长达数十年之久,收益甚巨。在这样的影响下,雷氏诗作常表现出对人的关爱和对社会问题的关注,具有一种精神道德的感召力。在诗歌创作中,他“力求最大限度的简练”。例如他的诗“心苑"苑心”中的诗句:"The lower leaves of the trees / Tangle the sunset in the dusk. / Awe spreads with / The summer twilight. // After sunset / Under the trees / Drifts the darkness, / The awful uncanniness / of the summer evening."

句子简短,意象鲜明,在这样的诗作中,经常出现中国古诗中的常见意象,如明月、暮霭、落日和森林等,蕴涵着浓郁的自然美和诗人的情怀,明显带有中国古诗,尤其是李白王维的绝句或短诗的韵味。在技巧上,则明显运用了由庞德从中国和日本古典诗歌中归纳出并且大力加以倡导的所谓“意象迭加”(superposition)的创作手法,带有非常浓郁的诗意。

雷氏在诗歌创作中和还经常运用中国诗歌的意象典故。如《短诗全集》(Collected Shorter Poems, New York, 1966)中的一首诗“又一春”(Another Spring),描写诗人在深山中欣赏宁静与温馨的自然之美,其中就多处化用杜甫、王维和白居易的诗句作为“互涉文本”(intertext),如“The white moon enters the heart of the river”是来自白居易的“唯见江心秋月白”(“琵琶行”),“The air is drugged with azalea blossoms”是取自杜甫的“地清栖暗芳”(“大云寺赞公房”),“Dee p in the night a pine cone falls” 是取自杜甫“故园松桂发”(“月圆”),“Our campfire dies out in the empty mountain”是取自王维“夜静春山空”(“鸟鸣涧”)等。雷氏还在创作技巧和语言文字上师法中国古典诗歌。例如,使用“千”、“万”这类词汇来表达“无限”之意,在中国古典诗歌中可谓俯拾即是,但在传统的英语诗歌中并不多见。然而在雷氏的诗中却经常出现,如:“Ten thousand birds sing in the sunrise. /Ten thousand years revolve without change. / All this will never be again”,“Snow of a thousand winters / Melt in the sun of one summer”(“The Wheel Revolves”)。再如工整的“对仗”在中国古诗中是十分常见的结构形式,而绝对工整的对仗在传统英诗中很少见,而且显得牵强。然而,我们在雷氏诗作中却可以读到这类效法中国古诗“对仗”的句子:The flowers are back in their places, / The birds back in their usual trees. / The winter star set in the ocean, / The summer star rise from the mountain. 等。

斯奈德的诗歌创作深受寒山诗的影响。他的诗集《碎石集》(Riprap,1959)有“碧玉涧”(Piute Creek)一诗,诗中写道:“ One granite ridge/ A tree, would be enough / Or even a rock, a small creak, / A bark shred in a pool. / Hill beyond hill , folded and twisted / Tough trees crammed / In thin stone fractures / A huge moon on it all,

is too much. ... // A clear, attentive mind, / Has no meaning but that / Which sees is truly seen./ No one loves rock, yet we are here. / Night chills. A flick / In the moonlight / slips into Juniper shadow...”

无论是从诗的意象、意境、情趣,还是从英诗的语言结构,读者分明从中读到了寒山的诗行:“碧涧泉水清,寒山月华白”,“默知神自明,观空静愈寂”,“万物静观皆自得”等。除了寒山,斯奈德对其他一些中国古代诗人也很熟悉。他在创作思想、诗美意境、语言形式和艺术技巧等多方面接受了中国古典诗歌的许多影响和启发。他的诗作大多以自然风光和人在自然环境里的劳动生活为题材,风格简洁明朗,语言朴实精炼,在当代美国诗坛上独具一格。其显著特征就是极为简约和直接用意象表达。

他的获奖诗集《龟岛》(Turtle Island,1957)中收有他自认为最好的诗“松树冠”(Pine Tree Tops):“In the blue night /Frost haze, the sky glows / With the moon. / Pine tree tops / Bend snow-blue, fade / Into sky, frost, starlight. / The creek of boots. / Rabbit tracks, deer tracks, / What do we know.”诗人面对自然界的美丽神秘,痛感现代人类的无知。

斯奈德指出,以唐诗为主的中国古典诗歌是他的先师。在他的诗作中,没有传统英美诗歌中那种直接的抒情和铺陈式的详细描写,而是通过一组意象,如明月、蓝天、霜雾、松树、鹿和野兔的足迹等,以及由这些意象构成的优美画面来表达诗人对大自然美好景色的赞美和对人类的无知与狭隘的不满。现代派文学家艺术家往往认为自然是丑恶的,只有人工(艺术)才是美的。现代派诗歌对自然的态度正反映出现代工业社会只是利用和开发自然的片面实用态度,其恶果是造成人类和自然界之间的紧张关系。后现代派诗人有鉴于此,提倡环境保护,呼吁人类与自然协调融洽,这正是斯奈德诗作中蕴含的深意。

《Anchored At Night By The Maple Bridge 》 枫桥夜泊(张继) 原文: 月落乌啼霜满天,江枫渔火对愁眠。 姑苏城外寒山寺,夜半钟声到客船。 译文: The moon is setting, rooks disturb the frosty air, I watch by mapled banks the fishing-torches flare. Outside the Suzhou wall, from Hanshan Temple’s bell, I hear its sound aboard and feel its midnight spell.

赏析: 原文中的“霜满天”,作者并没有直译,而是用“rooks disturb the frosty air”乌鸦搅动着寒冷的空气,用这个图景来营造一种肃杀、寒冷之感,是比较符合原文意境的。 而第二句中的“愁眠”未译出,因已用醒态的watch, hear等词,难以再插进“眠”字。This translation and the original meaning is different, not to the poet sad sleepless thoughts. Ancient poetry often use King Lyric, blending techniques, if the keywords can not seize the “愁眠”, it is very difficult for us to it that the poet's writing background, has a great influence on our understanding of the whole poem artistic conception.。 第三句,将寒山寺的钟声提前,形成了一种画面感,也承接了上下句。最后一句在点出,我听见那钟声在船上,并感觉那就是夜半的钟声。在这里“到客船”未直接译出,而是用了“aboard”表示状态,我感觉声音就在船上的状态。后半句“feel its midnight spell”感觉那是夜半的钟声,这两句实际上对原文做了比较大的改变,原文是描述一个客观事实,而译文加入了主观感受。 I quite like the change. 因为我夜深难眠,于是站在船上眺望江景,偶然听到了远处传来的钟声,仿佛就在船上似的,这时才陡然发现原来已到夜半时分,那钟声也就是夜半钟声。Such a translation, seems to be a process of psychological change the show in front of me, the very picture effect and dynamic effect, very complete.
