Woman's Choice: Hearing or Life?

To save her life, Jessica Stone had to lose her hearing.

Now to the inspiring story of a young woman faced with a difficult diagnosis. The surgery she needed to save her life would cause her to lose her hearing forever. So how would you spend your last days being able to hear the world? Jessica Stone did it with bravery and grace.

Taste it, taste it, love’s so sweet. And all of it was lost on me.

Imagine a symphony of sounds that make up your life, your favorite song, your family's laughter, your dog. Now imagine counting down the weeks, days, hours until every sound disappears.

Really, at a loss for emotion, freak out, actually. To be very blunt, freak out.

Surgery has been a fact of life for 23-year-old Jessica Stone since she was a little girl. But it wasn't until she was 15 that doctors were able to put a name to her disease neurofibromatosis (多发性神经纤维瘤), a rare genetic disorder that causes benign tumors to grow along her nervous system.

The diagnosis was, you know, pretty much a kick in the gut.

Over the years Jessica has had more than 20 surgeries to remove the tumors.

Since this whole thing started eight years ago, I wanna crawl up, a lot of days and cry and I can't because, I can't do it because she doesn't do it.

Her humor has always found ways to make her through and she is just a beautiful person inside

and out.

She'd already lost the hearing in her left ear and then this went her devastating news, there is a tumor pressing against her brainstem that has to come out. And the operation that will heal her will also leave her deaf.

You do a surgery that will leave you completely deaf or you take the risk of just stroking one day and dying. And now that was her choice.

The deafness thing, I will only, I will find some funky, corky way to make it work for me, to, you know be the, the person in the family that just like, wow, you know, she's deaf but she just does it so well!

Today marks thirty days until my big surgery...

And so in the month before surgery, Jessica sets out to record the sounds that make up her world.

Dig, doggy, dig a hole...

Playing her bongos, making her morning smoothy. The hope is one day these images will remind her of the sounds she can no longer hear.

Well it's hard to change the way you lose if you think you never won.

She practices her sign language by learning to sign her favorite song “All We Are”by Matt Nathanson. Just three weeks before surgery she gets to meet Nathanson at his concert, the last one she will ever hear.

On one hand it's great to meet the person. On the other hand, you know, I am never gonna to hear him sing again. So you know, it was a definitely emotional thing last night.

With one week left she takes in the gentle roar of the wind and waves of the beach.

Oh, it's gorgeous, listen to those waves.

And then all too soon the day of surgery is here. It has been a long 30 days and, yeah, very long very hard.

We talked and laughed and all kinds of things the night before, we wanted to get every minute in and you know nobody wanted to go to bed and then all of a sudden it's 6 a. m. and you're in the hospital.

That morning in the hospital, tense emotional moments, one last conversation.

I love you.

A final “I love you” and listening one last time to her favorite song as she is wheeled into the operating room.

In the end, the words won't matter.

After 13 hours of surgery relief, doctors tell Jessica's family the tumor is out and she is doing well.

The next morning the new reality -- Jessica's first conversation without sound

专题一阅读理解 训练7 情感态度 A(导学号59430066) When I asked my mother-in-law to select which meals she'd like me to order from the home-delivery menu, she only chose the ones her husband would like. This goes way beyond politeness. She is actually feeling uncomfortable voicing what she wants. She developed the main symptom of Asker's Syndrome that one's unable to ask for what one wants. It's not just older women who have this problem.Asker's Syndrome can strike the young.I have single friends who won't ask a man out on a date because they fear being considered “too forward”.My five-year-old daughter Violet is showing the early stages of Asker's Syndrome. She's learned that women don't ask,but rather drop hints. She'll say,“Remember last Sunday afternoon we went to the park?” rather than “Can we go to the park?” Apart from women and girls' problematic relationship with appetite, food and dating,it's widely reported that women are less likely than men to ask for pay rises and promotions.Instead, they withdraw, hoping that somebody else will decide they are worthy and make them promoted. No doubt, many women develop Asker's Syndrome as a defensive measure because they've been labeled as pushy or rude for simply asking for what they want. But in the long term, choosing not to express our desires doesn't serve us well. It's time to cure ourselves and our girls of Asker's Syndrome.I don't want to raise a future “mother” who denies her wish for food, power and success and anything else.So I now insist that my daughter ask for what she wants directly. For women in our culture, asking is a skill that we need to learn and practice. And if we all do it,then women asking will become the norm rather than the exception. 1.The author's mother-in-law is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to ________.A.introduce the old lady B.set an example C.talk about her illness D.lead in a topic

如:and, also, more, moreover, more than that, furthermore, likewise, equally important, first, second, in addition to, thus, so, therefore, consequently, accordingly, as a result 等。 2. 如:but, yet, while, however, nevertheless, although, though, otherwise, despite, instead, on the contrary, in contrast, notwithstanding等。 3. 如:to conclude, to sum up, in sum, in conclusion, in short, in brief, on the whole等。

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me. As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers (抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets. About a block from my apartment (公寓房间), I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining street-light. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the street. Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired any more, and I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the street anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck (垃圾车) pull up to the street next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other. (1)How did the writer feel when she was walking home after work? A. Cold and sick.

My 10-year-old Donna said, "Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?" Donna was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell. "Sure, honey, that sounds great." I said, thinking back to my own best friend, Lillian. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter, I was shy, but Lillian drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a big smile. In senior high school, Lillian went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. "I'll be back soon." she told me. But three days later, Lillian's sister told me that she had fallen into a river and hadn't come out any more. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey. Whenever I thought of her, tears came into my eyes. The next day Donna brought her new friend home. "Hi, Mrs. Loggia." the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she smiled brightly. "My name is Laura." My daughter's new friend was so much like Lillian. I was still puzzled(迷惑)when Laura's mom came to pick her up later that afternoon. I opened the door to let her in. "Judy!" she cried.

The green plant is a kind of food factory. It takes matter from soil, air and water and changes it ito the matter we call food. The green plant makes the kinds of matter we call sugar, starches, fat and proteins. The green plant is also astorage place for those foods that animals must eat. Good manners are important in all countries, but ways of expressing good manners are different from country to country. Americans eat with knives and forks; Japanese eat with chopsticks. Americans say “Hi” when they meet; Japanese bow. Many American men open doors for women; Japanese men do not. On the surface, it appears that good manners in America are not good manners in Japan, and in a way this is true. But in any country, the only manners that are important are those involving one person’s behavior toward another person. In all countries it is good manners to behave considerately toward others and bad manners not to. It is only the way of behaving politely that differs from country to country. The other day I wanted to send a present by post. So first of all I found a cardboard to put it in. Then I wrapped the box in brown paper. I tied the paper round tightly with a string. Having made the parcel secure, I wrote the name and adress in large letters on the front. After that, I took it to the post office to have it stampped. An account of my sending a parcel. 1)The best title for this passage might be _______. 2)The main idea of this passage may be expressed as _______. 3)What is the main idea expressed in the passage? 4)Which of the following best expresses the main idea ?
