One winter, my cousin and I were playing toy blocks in the yard. My mom was out for shopping to get groceries and my dad was asleep upstairs in his room. Suddenly, it started to snow. First it was just a little. But then it started to pour heavily.

Then, we put the finishing touches to our blocks and headed back inside. Right when I opened the sliding glass door, my cousin fell down on the slippery wooden stairs. I let go of the door, my worst mistake, you see. The door locks automatically but I had put a rock, right next to the door so it wouldn’t close. But while I was running to my cousin’s aid I’d accidentally kicked the rock.

Now, my cousin and I were locked outside. And unfortunately it started to get really windy. It was really freezing with the snow. First we started to call my dad, but he was sleeping soundly. I mean sleep-through-a-tornado-soundly. It was of no use.

Then I tried to climb over the fence but it didn’t work because the fence was iced by snow and wind, and the fence is six feet high. So, I climbed up to my tree house and brainstormed some ideas

on ways to get out. At one point, I was seriously considering jumping out of the tree house and use the trampoline(蹦床)to jump over the fence.

So, we got to work. First, I took out the trampoline. Then I started to jump. First try—I almost cracked my head. Second try — this time I convinced my cousin to do it but at the last second, he thickened out. Third try—I jumped and missed but at the last second, my hand caught the fence, and with a lot of pushing I finally climbed over the fence and luckily, I fell on a big snow drift.

Finally, my mom came back. Then I got inside and unlocked the door for my cousin to get in. Then we shared this story to my mom and dad.

The world welcomes 2015! From New Zealand to New York, the world eagerly celebrated the New Year, hoping for a better future after a year of diseases, struggles and disasters.

The islands of Samoa mid Tokelau in the Pacific Ocean and places located near the International Date Line mark the dawn of the New Year. As celebrations spread westward, fireworks lit up the night sky in towns and cities around the world, as celebrators partied on the streets.

In some pa rts of the world, the New Year’s celebrations were, lets say, rather unusual. In many European countries as well as in Coney Island, New York, swimmers braved freezing water temperatures for a dip in the ocean or lake on January 1. In Rome, Italy, divers jumped off the 59-foot-high Cavour bridge into the Tiber River. Londoners rang in the New Year with a massive fireworks display with dozens of rockets lighting up the night sky. The Scots’ celebration of New Year is also called “Hogmanay”. A torchlight proc ession led by men dressed as Vikings kicks off four days of Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, Scotland. The procession ends With the burning of a Viking long ship. Hogmanay is the Scottish word for the last day of the year. Street festivals are held on each day culminating in a fireworks display.

In New York, hundreds of thousands gathered to witness a huge ball with more than 30,000 lights descend at midnight. This tradition was adopted by the New York Times(after whom the square is named)in 1908 to attract crowds to celebrate the paper’s new headquarters. The ball has dropped every year since then except during the wartime years of 1942 and 1943. The first ball was made of iron, but now 2,688 crystal(水晶)triangles decorate this lighted ball.

It is 7 am and the alarm is going off. You know you have to be out of bed to catch the bus. But the urge to bury yourself in the bed is ever so strong. Sounds familiar? Why is it that teens find it difficult to get themselves out of bed in time every morning or stay sharp and focused during the first couple of hours of school?

During adolescence, the body goes through many changes and this includes a shift in sleep patterns. Researchers from MIT have been tracking the body’s need for sleep in teenagers.They found that though adolescents need as much as 9.5 hours of sleep a day, they get to bed later and later with each passing year. In fact, the sleep cycle shifts later by as much as 12 to 18 minutes each year between the ages of 10 and 20! So by the time a 10-year-old who sleeps at 8 pm grows to be 17 or 18, their body naturally wants to stay up till 10:30 or 11 pm.

According to researchers, this is because of a hormone called melatonin(褪黑激素)that is secreted(分泌)by the pineal gland - a tiny structure deep inside the brain. Melatonin regulates the body’s natural day-night rhythms. It causes a person to become sleepy by lowering their body’s core temperature. In teens, melatonin is secreted much later in the evening and continues to increase throughout the night. This makes it difficult for teens to fall asleep earlier as they did in their younger years. Likewise, the effect of melatonin continues until much later in the morning, making it hard for them to wake up early.

A study found that at least one in four teens is tired and falls asleep in school at least once a week. During sleep, important body functions and brain activities happen. So how can teenagers get their sleep enough? The American Association of Pediatrics(AAP)recommends that middle and high schools should start later - not before 8:30 am. This should give teens some more time to sleep at night.

Common Sense Media is a non-profit group in the United States that studies children’s use of media and technology. The group has done a survey asking teachers about the effects of their students’ use of entertainment media.

Entertainment media was defined as the TV shows, music, video games that students use for fun. Many teachers said they believe media use has hurt academic performance, which in some cases was already not very s trong. Vicky Rideout wrote the report for Common Sense Media. “We have merely four at tenth in students feel poor at reading, at oral communication and more than that thing the students wrongly fear report writing. So we need to make sure that everything kids are doing is helping to accelerate progress and not preventing it.”

The survey involved 685 teachers around the country. 71% of the teachers said they believe entertainment media has reduced students’ ability to pay attention in class. And almost 60% s aid it

has hurt their writing skills. Many teachers think it has negatively affected students’ ideas about boys and girls’ relationship. Many also think it encourages aggression and anti-social behavior. Teachers who describe themselves-as uncomfortable with new technologies were more likely than other teachers to see destructive effects of media use on social development.

But not all effects of media use were seen as bad. Almost two thirds of teachers said it also helped the students’ability to find information quickly and efficiently. And one third said using entertainment media has helped their students to multitask (执行多任务)effectively. Only 25% said it just has hurt them. Teachers who consider themselves as tech savvy(懂行的人)were more likely than others to see an advantage to students’ creativity from the use of entertainment media. Vicky Rideout says teachers accept that the way students spend their time and how they like to learn has changed.
