It is known to us all that English has already become an International language, which globalizes as rapidly as possible. People in many parts of areas around the world are using English in both business and political ways. However , as they learn English as their second language to adapt to globalization, this language itself has also been impacted . Therefore, what are the factors that English changes for globalization? They are concluded as follows:
In the first place, globalization has expanded English’s influence all over the world. In the past, it was only used in British once, which was called ‘the country whose sun will never set’. Different languages were popular in various regions. For instance, French was spoken not only in France but also in some parts of Africa while Spanish was widely used in Spain and Latin America. Imagine a woman who lived in Brazil for all her life and had never been abroad, she may not even know what English was. Nowadays, since the world itself has been developed into a entirety, we can be sure to say that there is no one who doesn’t know English at all.
Secondly, a large number of new words and ideas has been mixed into English. These new thoughts and opinions will create plenty of new ways for it ,where the language can promote. Fresh factors can get into the minds of English speakers through the language as well. Once their thoughts become more extensive, things they invent changes to be more creative. For example, modern medical science is using a great deal of Latin words for reference. The word ’flu ’ is short for ‘influenza’, which comes from Latin. These kind of words make great contributions to the research on medicines and diseases. Doctors and researchers can use them directly , instead of creating new words. In the same way, this kind of fusion has made a difference in many other fields.
Our world is having some changes that are made by English, whereas English, in the mean time ,is also changing and advancing owing to the globalization.
On one hand, the development which we can see in English is apparent. This language has been globalized into a diversity due to the globalization in the past few years. It is becoming more rigorous since the whole world is making use of it everyday while correcting and revising. Words and phrases which are out of fashion are weeded out quickly. In most of the International organizations, English is the first language to use for communication and documents. This will make sure that English will be more official and political than any other language.
On the other hand, on the way of English’s evolution, globalization is of course a great threat to English culture.
British has its own history and culture while other English-speaking countries have theirs. These kind of cultural phenomenon can be regarded as a part of people’s civilization. Language does have an important part in historical advance because it is the main way which men and women use to communicate with each other. Once English is compounded with other languages, the purity of English culture will not exist anymore.
