Part I Reading Comprehension

Passage One

My husband and I got married in 1981 and for the first ten years of our marriage I was very happy to stay home and raise our three children. Then four years ago, our youngest child went to school and I thought I might go back to work.

My husband was very supportive and helped me to make my decision. He emphasized all of the things I can do around the house, and said he thought I could be a great success in business.

After several weeks of looking for a job, I found my present job, which is working for a small public relations firm. At first, my husband was very proud of me and would tell his friends, ―My clever little wife can run that company she’s working for.‖

But as his joking statement approached truth, my husband stopped talking to me about my job. I have received several promotions and pay increases, and I’m now making more money than he is. I can buy my own clothes and a new car. Because of our joined incomes, my husband and I can do many things we had always dreamed of doing, but we don’t do these things because he is very unhappy.

We fight about little things and my husband is very critical of me in front of our friends. For the first time in our marriage, I think it is possible that our marriage may come to an end.

I love my husband very much, and I don’t want him to feel inferior (低等的), but I also love my job. I think I can be a good wife and a working woman, but I don’t know how. Who can give me some advice? Will I have to choose one or the other or can I keep both my husband and my new career (职业)?

Passage 2

Over 44 million families are online, and over half of their members – about 25 million people – may qualify as compulsive surfers. So, is ―Internet Addiction‖ a new psychological phenomenon? In a study published recently in the Journal of Affective Disorders, researchers from the University of Florida (UF) and the University of Cincinnati examined the habits of 20 people who had spent more than 30 nonworking hours a week online for the past three years. The participants described skipping sleep, ignoring family responsibilities, and showing up late for work to fulfill their desire to visit chat rooms and surf the Web. The consequences were severe: Many suffered from marital problems, failed in school or lost a job, and accumulated debt. The evidence points to a psychological disorder, so researche rs probed further and found that the participants’ habits met the criteria for impulse control disorders, mental illnesses characterized by an uncontrollable desire to perform a behavior that once executed, is often followed by a huge sense of relief. Most of the participants had a history of additional psychiatric problems like eating disorders and manic(狂躁的) depression.

Despite their apparent sufferings, the study’s participants were not easily identifiable, says Nathan Shapira, Ph.D., a UF assistant psychiatry professor and co-author of the study. ―These people were intelligent, well-respected community members,‖ he says. ―They were like your next-door neighbor—who just lost control.‖Given the confounding (使混淆) nature of the participants’ various symptoms, Shapira believes the essential issue remains: Is Internet ―addiction‖ a distinct disorder or a symptom of another well-defined disorder? ―It’s too early to know,‖he says. ―But my sense is that this problem is going to get worse as the size and speed of the Internet increases.‖

9Why will ―Internet Addiction‖ become worse?

A) Because the size and speed of the Internet will continue to increase.

Passage Three

How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him

without wasting his time in useless regrets.

Y outh is a time when there are few tasks to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child—things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong.

When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he words hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.

Passage Four

A few years ago it was common to speak of a generation gap between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not respect and listen to them, while children said that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that it is built into every part of our society.

One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In a more traditional society, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and like, and often to continue the family jobs. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose jobs different from those of their parents.

In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.

Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is the third cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, senior people are valued for their knowledge, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue in American life for some time to come.

Passage Five

For a long time women with HIV were ignored because the focus was totally on HIV men. The gay community was very much in sight and vocal (呼声高的) and successfully got support for its cause. Now we are rapidly approaching the point where about one half of all AIDS cases in the world are women. But no one is taking this dangerously high level of infection among women seriously enough.

Women usually have a worse time dealing with HIV than men do. In most cases, the woman is taking care of children as well as her sick partner. She may not even have time to take care of herself. The HIV-positive woman ends up shouldering the family as well as her own personal problems. Men, however, are usually the ones who have insurance(保险), income and access to doctors. They get care. Women often do not.

The discrimination (歧视) against HIV-positive women is simply terrible. They are likely to be more inactive than men in the home and workplace because too many people think that women are the cause of the disease. This is not at all true. They get it from a man. They don’t just simply have HIV. Of course, there’s a social discrimination against all people with HIV. They are scared that other people will know they are HIV-positive and that they will, therefore, be discriminated against. For example, it's very difficult for people with HIV to travel. They are not allowed to enter many countries, including the United States, China and Russia.

The biggest difficulty an HIV-positive woman must face is the isolation (孤立). Once the woman knows she’s HIV-positive, she lives in fear that other people will find out. She' s so frightened she will go into hiding, into an isolated place by herself. It's not at all uncommon to meet a woman who has been HIV-positive for nearly 10 years and has never told anyone, except her doctor. And the resulting stress is enough to make her sick. But HIV-positive women who get support, who can discuss their trouble and then do something about it ------whether that means taking better care of themselves or going to the United Nations to struggle for their rights ------ are likely to live longer. Active women don't die out of shame in a corner. This happens to too many HIV-positive women.

21 . Women with HIV were ignored for a long time because________.

A) their effort to attract attention was not as successful as the HIV men's

B) HIV men were the only concern over a long time

C) they often lived in a community that was hardly noticed by others

D) they failed to get support

22 . Which of the following statements is not true?

A) HIV-positive women make up nearly half of all AIDS cases in the world.

23 . According to the passage, it's difficult for women to deal with HIV but not because ________.

A) they often lose their jobs after other people find out they are HIV-positive

B) they often have no access to doctors

C) they usually have the family problem

D) they have little time left to take care of themselves

24 Countries such as the United States and China are mentioned in the article in order to show that ________.

A) there are more AIDS cases in those countries

B) HIV-positive people are usually discriminated against

C) it is not convenient for HIV-positive people to travel

D) people who are HIV-positive are afraid that these countries will find out

For questions 1–7, markY (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage; N (for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage; NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage. For questions 8–10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. Youth of Today —No savings, no pension, huge debts — Leaving school or university means financial independence — but does it also mean debt? Some experts say the young should take some care. It is life, but not as we know it. As this year’s school leavers and graduate s in Britain move on to further education or work, tasting financial independence for the first time, they show signs of being entirely different to previous generations in their attitudes to money, according to information collected by Cash. Used to debt but more affluent than previous generations, the current crop of 16- to 24-year-olds is a complex sector of society. But if they can handle their debts, these 7.5 million young adults have the potential to become quite sophisticated on money matters. Cash looked for the financial hallmarks of this group. They are going to be big spenders and will be targeted heavily by retailers. “The market for products and services aimed at this group has continued to thrive,” concludes research organization Mintel in its recent report for retailers “Selling to and Profi ting from the Under 25s”. This is “partly because the period during which people are young, free and single, unencumbered (不受妨碍的)by parents and /or children has expanded to the late twenties and early thirties,”it says. While 13 percent of the population regularly pays their utility(公共设施), credit card and other bills late, this proportion rises to a remarkable 64 percent for 18- to 24-year-olds, according to research conducted among 1,000 adults by https://www.doczj.com/doc/dc8806536.html,. In theory, this suggests that more than 4 million of them are heading for such poor credit ratings that they will find it difficult to borrow in the future. But lenders may become more flexible in their lending terms rather than lose out on this huge sector of the consumer market. Nearly one in three (28 percent) of people under 35 “do not consider their future financial position”, according to research from Accenture H R Services. Although half of 18- to 25-year-olds want to own their home some day, they see almost insurmountable hurdles, according to Mintel: “For those who had not yet bought their own property, the prospect of trying to do so seemed daunting — if not impossible —financially.” Or could it be that their future prosperity will depend on whether they inherit property from their parents? They regard as necessities many items which were seen as luxuries by their parents at the same age. More than nine out of 10 have their own mobile phone. “Some looked on their phone as a kind of security blanket, feeling lost without it,” says Mintel. A car is seen as “vital” by 64 percent
