If your cat walked across something you were painting and left footprints behind, would you con sider your cat an artist? The idea might sound like a joke to you, but some people have bee n tak ing ani mal art very seriously.
In 1995, two Russian-American artists, Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid, first heard about the troubles of elephants in Thailand. Elephants were used for hundreds of years in Thailand ' s loggi ng in dustry to move wood from forests in areas where there were no roads. When the forests of Thaila nd bega n to slowly disappear, the gover nment put a stop to loggi ng. All of a sudde n, there were many elepha nts who no Ion ger had a way to make a livi ng. There were once tens of thousands of elephants living in Thailand. Today, there are less than five thousa nd. Komar and Melamid knew that somethi ng had to be done to help the elepha nts. They came up with an idea that would forever cha nge the way people regarded Thai elepha nts.
Komar and Melamid visited elephant camps in Thailand where they began to show the mahouts who trained elepha nts how to teach them to paint. At first, the mahout has to guide the elephant ' s trunk. The elephants became more comfortable doing this with practiaed
lots of sweet sn acks — and fin ally started to paint on their own. The stra nge idea that Komar and Melamid had to save the elephantsactually began to work. They helped found several elepha nt art schools in Thaila nd and in other Asia n coun tries. The elepha nts and their mahouts go there to lear n about painting and to get the supplies they n eed. Today people buy elepha nt artwork from galleries all around the world. Some are eve n willi ng to pay more tha n $2,000 for the work of the elephant artists!
