2014年12月大学英语四级模拟考试答案

Part I Writing (30 minutes) Directions: For this part, you will allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay based on the picture below . You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then

express your views on the importance of seizing the opportunity .You should write at

least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

The important of seizing the opportunity

As is vividly drawn in picture ,some sand is slipping away from an open hand .Opportunity ,just like the sand ,if not held property ,may possibly slide away .And we should always bear in mind ,just as the caption says in the cartoon ,that more than half of our opportunity are released by ourselves.

It is true that opportunity plays a vital role in helping us to achieve success .We should grasp every valuable opportunity and make use of it ,otherwise we would be left with nothing but regret and disappointment.

But opportunity is not a piece of sheer luck smiling blindly on everyone . Just as a classic proverb goes ,chance favors the prepared minds .In fact ,hard work is as important as opportunity .Everyone who wants to be successful should work hard .When opportunities come, we should be ready and able to catch them .Hardworking people are more likely to seize the opportunity for success.

Anyway ,opportunity will not inform us in advance when they are on their way ,so do work hard before they come .

M: Yes, sure. And a few years ago, they were certainly like that. But they’ve got a lot better now. W: Yes, and historical films that’s what I really like.I never miss a good film set in the Middle Ages.Oh, and love stories.I never miss one on TV.

M: Funnily enough,I don’t like those kinds of films at all.But to come back to this one,I personally didn’t think it was very good.It certainly wasn’t as good as other science fiction films I’ve seen. W: Wasn’t it?

M: No, not at all.Oh, the effects were very good.

W: Yes, I thought they were marvelous, especially the battle in space, incredible.

W: Yes. I suppose Jason was too good to be true. And what was the name of the baddy?

M: Cargon?

W: Yeah. Cargon was really evil, wasn’t he?But I suppose that’s what these films are all about good triumphing over evil. And the characters have to be black and white.

M: Well, yes, but not always.War of the Worlds wasn’t like that, for example.Anyway, you enjoyed the film. That’s the most important.

W: Yes, I did.Thanks for taking me.

M: And what was your reason for wanting to do the class?

W: Well, I just bought my first car and I don’t know anything about cars.So I thought it was a good opportunity to learn.I guess most people in the class are in the same situation.

M: Um, and what do you actually do?Do you bring the car along to the class?

W: Yes, we do.And in the first part of the lesson,

the first half hour, the man who runs the class will go through some particular part of the car,and we’ll learn about it.And then we spend the rest of the time, actually working on our own cars, the same problem.

M: And how many people are there in the class?

W: Um, I think 16,but three quarters of them are women. It’s quite interesting because the man is obviously used to teaching man.And he always starts his sentence by saying,Wow, you chaps will know" And then he stops and says,Oh, and you women, er, you ladies, but...

M: Um-sounds funny.

Section B

Passage One

We don’t choose friends on the basis of how much money they have,of course, but vast differences can be disturbing to both sides.Erin, for example, is single, and earns a very good salary. Her friend, Pat, a divorced mother of three,is struggling to make ends meet.We are both frequent theater-goers,Erin explains, and I’d gladly pay for two tickets, just to have Pat’s company at plays and concerts, but she won’t go anywhere unless she can pay her own way.I hate to go alone,so we both stay at home.It all seems so silly.Pat sees the situation differently. After an unhappy marriage to a man who tried to control her without considering her wishes and feelings, she says,It’s very important to me to carry my own weight.I’m not comfortable in any relationship where all I do is take. The difficult situation finally changed when Erin moved recently.Pat’s children were with their father,so she took a picnic lunch to her friend’s new place, then spent the day helping her unpack and get settled.I was so grateful, Erin says, that I persuaded Pat to let me return the favour in my own way with season tickets to our little theater group.I think she’s beginning to recognize that she contributes as much to our friendship as I do.

Questions 16 to 19 are based on the passage

16. What do we learn about Pat?

17. What draws Erin and Pat together?

18. What does Erin do to return Pat?ˉs favour?

19. What do we learn about friendship from the passage?

Passage Two

Sun School in the town of Ashburton, England,is a day school for children aged 10 to 18.It is based on the value of social equality between students and staff, and has few rules.Sun School believes that the healthy growth of a child is more important than academic success. It offers a variety of lessons and activities for students to choose from and free time for children to follow their own interests.Classes are small, and based on the individual needs of each child. The timetable is fixed, but democratically decided, and students are expected to attend. The weekly school meeting is at the center of the way. Sun School is organized. It makes all the decisions that affect the school, including rules, the timetable and accepting or rejecting new students and teachers.Participating in these meetings gives the children an understanding of democratic decision-making and helps them develop their skills of argument and persuasion. The most important advantage of the school meeting is that it shows the children that the school is really theirs. They have the right to decide on changes. And the school?ˉs success or failure depends on their decisions and their behavior.Sun School employs no cooking or cleaning staff. These jobs are

done by the students and teachers.Decorating and simple repairs are also done by the students. It is believed that for the school to truly belong to those who use it,they must take responsibility for its maintenance.

Questions 20 to 22 are based on the passage

20. What value is Sun School based on?

21. What is characteristic of the school’s decision-making process?

22. Why does Sun School ask students to do its maintenance?

Passage Three

Well, to continue, as I mentioned earlier, there is also research that demonstrates that individuals perform worse, not better,on tasks when other people are there.R. W. Harburt did an interesting experiment. He had his subjects learn a finger maze. This is a game in which you indicate with your finger the way through a complex system of passages or paths. The subjects who had an audience did worse than the subjects who did alone. Now how can we explain these very different results? It seemed very confusing for a long time.Social psychologist, John Roberts, finally cleared up the confusion about why people sometimes perform better and sometimes worse in front of an audience.Roberts found that the presence of an audience facilitates what you already know how to do.That is, if you know what you are doing, having an audience helps you do it better. But if you don’t already know how to do something, you will probably make some mistakes and you will make mistakes for a longer time if you have an audience. That’s exactly what happened to the subjects who were learning the finger maze. So, if you are doing well,]having an audience increases the chances that you will continue to do well.If you are doing badly, having an audience increases the chances that you will continue to do badly.Roberts cleverly pointed out that when you are first learning something, you are better off working alone than practicing with other people.

Questions 23 to 25 are based on the passage

23. What did the speaker probably discuss before coming to this part of the talk?

24. When does the presence of an audience facilitate your performance according to Roberts?

25. What does Roberts think is a better way to learn new things?

Section C

Americans today have different eating habits than they had in the past. There is a wide selection of food available. They have a broader knowledge of nutrition (营养), so they buy more fresh fruit and vegetable than ever before. At the same time, Americans purchase increasing quantities of sweets and sodas.

Statistics show that the way people live determines the way they eat. American lifestyles have changed. There are now growing numbers of people who live alone, single parents and children, and double-income families. These changing lifestyles are responsible for the increasing number of people who must rush meals or sometimes simply go without them. Many Americans have less time than ever before to spend preparing food. Partly as a consequence of this limited time, over half of all American homes now have microwave ovens. Moreover, Americans eat out nearly four times aweek on average.

It is easy to study the amounts and kinds of food that people consume. The United States Department of Agriculture and the food industry collect sales statistics and keep accurate records . This information not only tells us what people areeating, but also tells us about the changes in

attitudes and tastes.Red meat, which used to be the most popular choice for dinner,is no longer an American favorite. Instead, chicken, turkey and fish have become more popular. Sales of these foods have greatly increased in recent years.

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had “black snow”from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So air pollution is really a global problem. Air pollution can kill babies, older people, and those who have respiratory(呼吸的)diseases. As found in cities, air pollution increases the risks of certain lung diseases. Air pollution can cause both airplane and car accidents because it cuts down visibility (能见度). There are other possible health dangers from air pollution that we don’t know much about. For example, scientists are trying to find out whether chemicals that reach us from the air may cause changes in our cells. These changes might cause babies to be born with serious birth defects. Scientists are trying to learn how all the many chemicals are apt(易于的)to take into our bodies from air, water, food, and even medicines act together to affect our health and the way our bodies work. That is another reason why it is so important to begin to control pollution now instead of waiting until we learn all the answers. Air pollution costs us a lot of money. It corrodes(腐蚀)our buildings. It damages farm crops and forests. It has a destructive effect on our works of art. The cost of all this damage to our government is great. It would be much more worthwhile, both for us and for the government, to spend our tax dollars on air pollution control. 1. Air pollution may lead to airplane accidents because . A. it may cause pilots to be ill B. engines may fail from the air-borne dirt C. visibility is reduced D. it brings a lot of black snow 2. Scientists are trying to find a link between pollution and . A. intelligence levels B. birth problems C. man’s behavior D. the nervous system 3. Scientists have not yet determined . A. all of the effects of pollution on the human body B. how pollution can be controlled successfully C. when the atmosphere first became polluted D. how some snow becomes black 4. The author suggests that before air pollution becomes more serious, . A. factories will be forced to stop operating B. buildings should be protected C. the earth will begin to grow colder D. more money should be spent to solve the problem 5. We can conclude that . A. civilization may be ruined if pollution is not controlled B. pollution is more serious in Europe than it is in America C. most people do not know that pollution is a serious problem D. we should learn all the answers before we begin to control pollution Passage Two Stiletto heels could be banned from the workplace because of health and safety reasons, according to British Trade Union bosses. The Trade Union Congress, predominantly male, has proposed a motion arguing that high heels are disrespectful to women while they also contribute to long term injuries. They propose instead that women wear “sensible shoes”with an inch heel limit in an attempt to avoid future foot and back pain as well as injuries. The motion is due to be debated at next month’s conference. The motion states: “Congress believes high heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely in appropriate for the day-to-day working environment. Feet bear the burden of daily life, and for many workers prolonged standing, badly fitted footwear, and in particular high heels can be a hazard. Around two million days a year are lost through sickness as a result of lower limb disorders. Wearing high heels can cause long-term foot problems and also serious foot, knee and back pain and damaged joints. Many employers in the retail sector force women workers to wear high heels as part of their dress code. More must be done to raise awareness of this problem so that women workers and their feet are protected.” Nadline Dorries, the Tory Member of Parliament, however criticized the motion and said the extra height heels give women can help them when in the workplace. “I’m 5ft 3in and need every inch of my Christian Louboutin heels to look my male colleagues in the eye,”she said. “If high heels were banned in Westminster, no one would be able to find me. The Trade Union leaders need to get real, stop using obvious sexist tactics by discussing women’s

Passage One Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. There is a difference between science and technology. Science is a method o f answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving practical problems. Science has to do with discovering the facts and relationships betwee n observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to o rganize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniq ues, and procedures for implementing the finding of science. Another distinction between science and technology has to do with the progr ess in each. Progress in science excludes the human factor. Scientists, who seek to comp rehend the universe and know the truth within the highest degree of accuracy an d certainty, cannot pay attention to their own or other people's likes or disli kes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things. What scientists discover m ay shock or anger people-as did Darwin's theory of evolution. But even an unple asant truth is more than likely to be useful; besides, we have the choice of re fusing to believe it! But hardly so with technology; we do not have the choice

For question 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. Media Selection for Advertisements After determining the target audience for a product or service, advertising agencies must select the appropriate media for the advertisement. We discuss here the major types of media used in advertising. We focus our attention on seven types of advertising: television, newspapers, radio, magazines, out-of-home, Internet, and direct mail. Television Television is an attractive medium for advertising because it delivers mass audiences to advertisers. When you consider that nearly three out of four Americans have seen the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? You can understand the power of television to communicate with a large audience. When advertisers create a brand, for example, they want to impress consumers with the brand and its image. Television provides an ideal vehicle for this type of communication. But television is an expensive medium, and not all advertisers can afford to use it. Television’s influence on advertising is fourfold. First, narrowcasting means that television channels are seen by an increasingly narrow segment of the audience. The Golf Channel, for instance, is watched by people who play golf. Home and Garden Television is seen by those interested in household improvement projects. Thus, audiences are smaller and more homogeneous(具有共同特点的)than they have been in the past. Second, there is an increase in the number of television channels available to viewers, and thus, advertisers. This has also resulted in an increase in the sheer number of advertisements to which audiences are exposed. Third, digital recording devices allow audience members more control over which commercials they watch. Fourth, control over programming is being passed from the networks to local cable operators and satellite programmers. Newspapers After television, the medium attracting the next largest annual ad revenue is newspapers. The New York Times, which reaches a national audience, accounts for $1 billion in ad revenue annually. It has increased its national circulation(发行量)by 40% and is now available for home delivery in 168 cities. Locally, newspapers are the largest advertising medium. Newspapers are a less expensive advertising medium than television and provide a way for advertisers to communicate a longer, more detailed message to their audience than they can through television. Given new production techniques, advertisements can be printed in newspapers in about 48 hours, meaning newspapers are also a quick way of getting the message out. Newspapers are often the most important form of news for a local community, and they

大学英语四级考试模拟试卷(1) Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension (35 minutes) Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by so me questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C) and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage: Some radio singals were heard in 1967.They were coming from a point in the sky where there was unknown star. They were coming very regularly, too:about once a second,if they were controlled by clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. The signals were coming from a very small body—no bigger, perhaps than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it?Or were the signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star? There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret.“Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there.”they thought,“who are trying to send messages to other planets,or to us?So the news was not given to the newspaper.Instead, the scientists studied the signals and searched for others like them...Well,all that happened in 1967 and 1968.Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And they have told the story,of course. The signals do not come from a planet;they come from a new kind of star called a “pulsar””.About a hundred other pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like the first one. Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present.A handful of pulsar would weigh a few thousand tons.Their light—if they give much light—is too small
