You don’t need millions to be happy. In fact, at the Happiness Training Centre in Australia, a couple of hundred dollars may be enough.

The training centre opened its doors last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying A$200 an hour for lessons on how to feel great. ―You can really increase your happiness levels. That’s what we teach,‖ said Timothy Sharp, beginner of the centre.

Experts say that only about 15 per cent of happiness comes from income and financer (收入及财务因素). As much as 85 per cent comes from things such as attitude, life control and relationships.

Most of us are better off financially than our parents and grandparents, but happiness levels haven’t changed to match that.

Studies show that once the basic needs of housing and food are met, other wealth adds very little to happiness.

Scientists now say part of the reason we are richer but not happier is that we compare ourselves to people better off.

―The fact is that if you want to be happy, there’s a very simple thing you can do: compare yourself to people who are less well off than you — poorer, smaller house, etc.‖ said Sharp.

The Happiness Training Centre hopes to show you how to overcome these unhappiness factors by paying attention to ―more tha n just your bank account.‖

―If I compare myself to Bill Gates, then I’m always going to be down,‖ said Sharp.

65. Do people need a lot of money to be happy?

66. When did the Happiness Training Centre open?

67. Who’s the beginner of the Happiness Training Centre in Australia?

68. What does happiness depend on according to the passage?

69. What does the last sentence mean?

Do you want a happier, healthier family? Here’s a simple way: Eat with your family more often.

Increasingly, researchers are discovering the importance of family mealtime. Several recent studies have pointed to the same result: Children who often eat dinner with their parents are happier and have fewer behavior problems.

Dr. Blake Bowden, an American researcher, carried out one study. He found that young people who have family dinners at least five times a week may not use drugs. They are often happier and do better in school.

Clearly, family dinners are important for a child’s development. Why? Because dinnertime offers busy families a good chance to sit down together and talk. The relaxing conversation at the dinner table helps keep good family relationships(关系). And good family relationships help children develop self-respect and a sense of belonging.

Family relationships can also influence a person’s health. One study shows that children who enjoy close relationships with their mothers will not develop serious health problems.

Sadly, however, meaningful family time is too often forgotten. Parents are busy working and children are busy studying for tests. According to Dr. Blake’s study, nearly 25 percent of people say that they have little time for family.

According to another study, people spend only about 50 minutes of free time with family each day. And those 50 minutes are not well spent on meaningful conversations, either. Many parents say they kno w little about their children’s fri ends.

So how can families find more time for each other? How can they enjoy more family meals and conversations? They need to make choices. For children, they’d better not spend so much on their tests, but they may risk(冒险) falling behind their classmates. For parents, they need to go back home earlier and risk not getting a high position.

But for families who do make those tough choices, the rewards are rich. Making time to eat dinner with family does more than feed the body—it nourishes(滋养) the heart.

65. Are family dinners important for children?

66. Why is meaningful family time often forgotten?

67. According to a study, how long do people stay with family each day?

68. What should parents do to keep good family relationships?

69. How do good family relationships help children?

Many everyday American expressions are based on colors.Red is a hot color.Americans often use it to express heat. They may say they are red hot about something unfair. When they are red hot, they are very angry about something.

People sometimes say they are in the pink when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the 20th century. It probably comes from the fact that many babies are born with a nice pink color that shows that they are in good health.Blue is a cool color. The traditional blues music in the United States is the opposite of red hot music.Blues is slow and sad.Someone who is blue is very sad.The color green is natural for trees and grass. But it is an unnatural color for humans.A person who has a sick feeling stomach may say she feels a little green.A passenger on a boat who is feeling very sick from high waves may look very green.Sometimes a person may be upset because he does not have something as nice as a friend has, like a fast new car. That person may say he is green with envy(妒忌).Some people are green with envy because a friend has more dollars or greenbacks.Dollars are called greenbacks because that is the color of the backside of the paper money.

People describe a day in which everything goes wrong as a black day.The date of a major tragedy is remembered as a black day.Blackouts were coming during World War II.Officials would order all lights in a city turned off to make it difficult for enemy planes to find a target in the dark of night.

65. Is red a hot color?

66. When do people say they are in the pink?

67. What color will people use when they feel sick, upset or envy someone else?

68. What’s the real meaning of the underlined phrase ―red hot music‖ in English?

Who was Leonardo da Vinci? You may answer without thinking: ―He is the painter of the Mona Lisa.‖ What else do you know about him? Da Vinci was more than just a great artist in history. He’s also famous as a scientist and an inventor.

Recently, the Grand Rapids Public Museum in the US had an exhibition to introduce this great talent. In one of the shows, named ―Leonardo da Vinci’s Machines in Motion‖, visitors could see and touch 30 full-size machines built according to his sketches– including a crane (起重机) and a robot!

Leonardo da Vinci was born to a rich family in Florence, Italy, in 1452. From childhood, Leonardo was given a good education and he showed talent at painting. By the age of 26, da Vinci had already become a famous painter.

However, he showed that he had multiple talents in 1482 when he began to work for the Duke of Milan as a chief engineer. In the duke’s military factories, da Vinci developed an interest in war weapons.

He designed many important machines, including helicopters and parachutes. He also drew and wrote about an armored car, which could carry eight men inside and allow them to fire weapons through holes in its walls. Da Vinci’s idea led to the modern tank. Though da Vinci never built many of the inventions he designed, some of the things he imagined in the late 1400s are in use today.

As a scientist, da Vinci was interested in the human body. He spent a whole year cutting up dead bodies in hospitals to learn about human anatomy (解剖). He made more than 200 drawings of bodies.

Amazingly, da Vinci wrote backward, so the easiest way to read his notes was to hold them up to a mirror!

65. Was the Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo da Vinci?

66. When was Leonardo da Vinci born?

67. What did Leonardo da Vinci design?

68. Why did Leonardo da Vinci cut up dead bodies in hospitals?

69. What was Leonardo da Vinci according to the passage?

On March 27, Saturday evening, people all over the world once again turned their lights off for an hour to help fight against global climate changes and give the world a brighter future.

For Earth Hour 2010, many best known buildings went dark from 8:30 to 9:30 local time, such as the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Sydney's Opera House and Beijing's Forbidden City, etc. Millions of businesses and homes around the world also turned off their lights.

Some 4,000 cities in more than 120 countries volunteered to turn off Saturday to reduce energy consumption(能量消耗). "We have everyone from Casablanca to the camps of Namibia and Tanzania taking part," said Greg Bourne, CEO of WWF(World Wildlife Fund) in Australia, which started Earth Hour.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. In 2008, the event turned into an international one, which has drawn the participation of hundreds of towns and cities worldwide. Now in its fourth year, more and more cities from the world took part in Earth Hour as a show of support for action against global warming.

In a WWF survey suggested after Earth Hour 2009, 80 million U.S. citizens said they had participated, according to Ann. "Earth Hour has always been an event about families and individuals as well," Ann said, "and it's really about Americans and people all over the world standing up and saying climate change is real and we need to do something about it now."

However, Earth Hour's energy-saving influence is limited. But WWF says that Earth Hour's real value is symbolic(象征的).

65. Did people all over the world turn off the lights on March 27?

66. What time did the best-known buildings go dark?

67. Where did Earth Hour start in 2007?

68. How many times have we had this event since 2007?

69. What is the passage mainly about?

Happiness is U-shaped, for we are happier at the start and end of our lives but hit a slump (低潮)when we are middle-aged, scientists from England and America say. They have studied the information on the mental (心理的) health of two million people from 80 countries.

In England, the probability of low spirits for men and women reaches the highest point at around 44 years of age. In America, though, there is a big difference between men and women. Among women, unhappiness reaches the highest point at around the age of 40, but among men, it is about 50.

But the U-shape of happiness is unchanging around the world, and the mid-life sadness happens regardless of marital status (婚姻状况), changes in job or pay. It happens to men and women, to single and married people, to rich and poor, and to those with and without children.

One possibility may be that people realize many of their dreams won’t come true at middle age. The researchers said another reason could be that seeing their middle-aged friends die one by one, people begin to value their own remaining years and their love of the nature and long for peaceful and free life once more.

But the good news is that if people make it to aged 70 and are still physically fit, they are on average (平均) as happy as a 20-year-old person. For the average people in the modern world, the fall in mental health and happiness doesn’t come on suddenly in a single year. Only in their fifties do people get out of this low period.

65. Do people feel happy at the start and end of their lives?

66. Where are the scientists in the passage from?

67. When does the unhappiness reach the highest point among men in America, at the age of

40 or about 50?

68. What is the good news for a 70-year-old healthy man?

69. How will a teenager feel in his future life according to the passage?

Do you want to know more cultures about other countries? Here are some messages you may be interested in.

Taking off your shoes or not

It’s bad manners to take off your shoes at the door of a London dinner party. But in Asia if you don’t take off your shoes before entering a home, you are not polite enough.

What you should do instead: If you see a row of shoes at the door, take off your shoes. If not, keep the shoes on.

Talking over dinner

In some countries, like Japan, don’t start talking while everyone else is having dinner. You’ll meet with silence – not because your group is unfriendly, but because mealtime is for eating, not talking. Also don’t talk in places like churches in Europe.

What you should do instead: Keep quiet!

Knowing your right from your left

Some cultures in Africa and the Middle East still like to eat in traditional ways – using their hands. When people eat in this way, food is often offered for several people to share at the same time. That is why it’s important to wash your hands before eating. While eating, you have to follow the rule: Eat using your right hand, and use your left hand to do other things. Another thing to remember: Eat the food that’s closest to you. Don’t put your hand into the center of the table.

What You Should Do Instead: Follow the others and use your right hand. Even children who are left-handed in this culture are taught to eat with their right hands. If you really can’t, explain yourself to others before you eat.

65. Is it good manners to take off your shoes at the door of a London dinner party?

66. Why do Japanese people keep silent while eating?

67. What is important in Africa and the Middle East before eating?

68. How many rules should you remember while eating in Africa?

69. What does the passage mainly talk about?

Today is the Earth Day. Our reporter Nick Ford interviewed several people in the street. This is what they told him:

9:24 Miss Mayfield, a young teacher

I try to tell my students the importance of our relations with wild animals. I take them to zoos and forests, and I avoid using materials that come from wild animals, for example, ivory, which comes from elephants. I don’t wear things made of fur, and I even avoid buying leather shoes. Wool is okay, though-the sheep don’t get hurt!

10:03 Mr. Perdue, a businessman

I don’t use my car for short journeys. I walk or go by bike. It’s good for my health, and it doesn’t pollute the air.

10:30 Tom Pitt, a 14-year-old student

I only buy writing paper and notebooks made form recycled paper. And when I buy something made of wood, like a wooden table, I’ll make sure that the wood comes from a forest where they plant new trees.

11:01 Mr. White, an artist

I’m an artist, and I enjoy recycled art. They are things made out of rubbish-like this model plane made from old containers. In fact, I hate throwing things away. I even keep my old woolen clothes and cotton handkerchiefs and use them for cleaning.

11:35 Ms. Nelson, a policeman

I’m careful not to waste electricity. For example, I always turn the lights off when I leave a room. And I don’t have the TV on when I’m not watching it.

12:00 Mr. Parks, a doctor

I take my empty bottles, jars, and anything else made of glass to the recycling center every week. I try not to buy plastic bottles because you can’t recycle most kinds of plastic.

65. Is Miss Mayfield a young teacher?

66. Who doesn’t use a car for short journeys?

67. Where does Mr. Parks go every week?

68. What is recycled art?

69. What are these people trying to do?

When we compare ourselves with great people, we feel very ordinary and unimportant. However, we must remember that those great people were extraordinary. The world has more than 6 billion people, so it is difficult for all of us to be extraordinary. What can we do? We can try to be the best people that we can possibly be.

I think this means that we need to be honest and hard-working. We also need to be open-minded and kind to other people. Most importantly, we need to be ambitious (有雄心的). We need to always set goals for ourselves and work hard to achieve these goals.

Madam Curie and Thomas Edison were hard-working, kind and ambitious, and they worked hard to achieve their goals. Curie gave her life to ―ease (减轻) human sufferings‖. Edison spent his life as an inventor. He invented a camera that showed movement. Later people used cameras to make modern films.

A famous writer from Ireland once wrote,―We are all in the gutter (社会底层) but some of us are looking at the stars.‖I often come up with this when I am unable to achieve something. It reminds me that we are all at a lower level and that we all have a higher goal to work towards. It makes me try to be the best person that I can possibly be.

65. What kind of people are called great people ?

66. Is it difficult for all of us to be extraordinary?

67. What did people use cameras to do later?

68.What does the word ―this‖ mean?

69. What does this passage mainly tell us?

A rabbit is running into a hole. You may ask, ―What happened?‖

Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see his tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.

Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee finds some food, it goes back to his home. It can’t tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.

But human beings have something that no animals have---a large number of words about things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of the things what have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No animals have the wonderful power of language.

No one knows how the first men learned to make words. Somehow they learned to make them. As countries went by, they made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.

People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we don’t know all these. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful book.

65. Do animals use special languages for communication?

66. How does the bee tell other bees where the food is, by speaking or dancing in the air?

67. What are the examples to explain the wonderful power of human being's language according to the writer?

68. Who can remind themselves of the things what have happened?

69. How can we make our vocabulary larger?

Music has always been an important part of Chinese people’s life. People enjoy listening to music at home and in concerts halls. As time goes by, music changes.

Traditional(传统的) music is part of our culture, so it often stays with us for a long time. Many of the traditional Chinese songs have been around for many years. Young musicians(音乐家) learn songs from older musicians and the music changes only very little. Modern Chinese music, which is loved by many young people, however, is mainly pop music. That means the songs will be popular for a short time and then replaced(替代) by new songs. Today’s musicians write new songs every year and we hear new songs on the radio every day.

Before radio and TV were invented, music could only be heard liv e —that is you had to go places where musicians gave performances(演出). The best musicians were very busy, so it was difficult and often expensive to hear really good music. For most people, the best chance to hear good music was during a festival or at a wedding. Today, people hear music all the time. Radio and TV play songs every day and night and you can even hear music played on the street.

One thing that hasn’t changed very much is what the songs are about. Both modern and traditional Chinese songs are about love and life. Some songs tell stories about past and some are about the news or the future. All of the songs have something to do with what it means to be a human being.

Music, traditional or modern, Chinese or international, seems to be a world language that everybody can understand and enjoy. Music changes and styles come and go, but nothing changes our love for good music.

65. Is music important for Chinese people’s life?

66. How do young musicians learn songs?

67. By what ways can people hear music today?

68. How did people listen to music before radio and TV were invented?

69. According to the passage, what is the difference between traditional and modern Chinese

music? And what is their common point?

Everyone enjoys music but did you know it could improve the lives of sick kids? A famous musician once said music could change the world! In fact in Australia, a scientist, Catherine, has made a music program that’s been putting smiles on the faces of kids in hospitals across the country. "It can make you happy, it can make you sad, it can make you want to get up and dance, and it can make you feel good and take away any stress(压力)," said Catherine.

For thousands of years people have believed that music has a great effect(效果)on both the mind and the body, but it was only about 70 years ago that scientists began to study its medical effects. At that time, doctors and nurses found that playing music in hospitals helped sick soldiers feel better. Sinc e then it’s been used to help people with brain problems learn to speak again and help other patients feel less pain and sadness. It’s even been used to help kids in schools get better marks because it allows them to relax and pay more attention.

Now music is being used in a special program called Music Therapy(治疗). It helps people improve their life in many different ways by using music. It can include: listening to music, playing instruments, singing, song writing, action songs and games.

Sophia is eleven. She got bone cancer five months ago, but playing music, learning new songs and singing have become a part of her life. "It takes my mind off feeling sick. While I am listening to music, it tells me not to give up hope. It feels like soon my life will turn around and I will be strong again."

It seems that a few minutes of music a day can help keep the doctor away!

65.Who is Catherine?

66. Can music help children to get better marks at school?

67. What is Music Therapy?

68. How does Sophia feel during her Music Therapy?

69. What’s your idea for music?

In 1995, Osceola McCarty gave a present of $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi. She wanted to help poor students. It was a very generous(慷慨的,善良的) thing to do. But her friends and neighbors were surprised. McCarty was a good woman. She went to church. She was always friendly and helpful. But everyone in her town knew that McCarty was not rich. In fact, she was poor.

How did a poor 86-year-old woman have so much money? Osceola McCarty was born in 1908 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She had to leave school when she was eight years old to help her family. She took a job washing clothes. She earned(挣钱) only a few dollars a day. Osceola washed the clothes by hand. Then she hung(悬,挂) the clothes to dry. She did this for nearly 80 years. In the 1960s, she bought an automatic(自动的) washer and dryer. But she gave them away. She did not think they got the clothes clean enough! At that time, many people started to buy their own washers and dryers. McCarty did not have much work, so she started to iron(熨) clothes instead.

McCarty never married or had children. Her life was very simple. She went to work and to church. She read her Bible(圣经). She had a black-and-white television. But she did not watch it very much. It had only one channel.

McCarty saved money all her life and eventually had about $250,000. When she was 86, a lawyer(律师) helped her make a will(遗嘱). She left money to the church, her relatives, and the university. McCarty just wanted to help others. She did not think she was a special person. But then people found out about her present to the university. She received many honors(荣誉). She even flew in an airplane for the first time! Osceola McCarty died in 1999. She was a shy and ordinary woman who became famous.

65. Was Osceola McCarty a generous woman?

66. How old was Osceola McCarty when she left school to help her family?

67. What did Osceola McCarty begin to do when they had their own washers and dryer in

1960s?

68. How was her life like?

69. How many children did she have?

Bullies(欺负)are a big problem in schools. Every week, many children are afraid to go to school. They are afraid they will be picked on(找茬)by a bully. One study found that 52% of children reported being bullied at least once a week. Sixty percent say that they know someone who could harm them. One student was always being teased because he was short. He didn’t like to go to school because he had to face the bullies.

Some children choose not to go to school at all so they can avoid the bullies. When they miss school, students fall behind their classmates. A new program is helping put an end to this problem. The program is teaching kids how to deal with bullies. This is helping more children feel safe in school.

One school principal is working to end this negative(消极的)behavior. Last year, he decided to let students know bullying is not allowed there. Students are now encouraged to report bullies and stand up for themselves. Those found to be bullies face harsh penalties(严厉的惩罚).Students at his school participate in a program called ―Be Bold.‖ In this program, students work together to prevent violence(暴力). They do skits(小喜剧)and go into classrooms to talk about the problem. They give other students strategies on how to deal with bullies.

The principal says that the school has changed since he has addressed (重点提出) the bullying problem. But there are other steps parents can take to help their children with this problem. First, students and their parents should know the school’s rules about bullying and what they should do if it happens. Second, children should be taught to stand up for themselves. They should try to resolve issues(解决问题) by talking them out. If the problem continues, parents and children should record each incident. Children should tell someone if they are being picked on. Many children keep bullying a secret. Third, parents should look for warning signs of bullying. These can include cuts and bruises, worrying, wanting to stay home from school, or a sudden drop in grades.

65. Are many children afraid to go to school every week?

66. Is the new program teaching children how to deal with bullies or avoid the bullies?

67. What do the students do in the ―Be Bold‖ program?

68. How many other steps can the parents take to help their children with the problem?

69. What is the purpose of the passgae?

Ellen Sims is an 18-year-old college student. She has an important history exam tomorrow morning. Ellen is going to study all night. She is not going to sleep at all. Many college students ,like Ellen, do this often. They think that they can study all night. And they think that in the morning, they will remember everything that they studied the night before, Ellen thinks that this is a good way to study, but many doctors disagree. They say that sleep is very important for memory and brain development.

Scientists at Harvard Medical School in the US studied sleep and memory. They studied 24 people. First, they asked the people to look at a picture and remember it. At night, they put the people in two groups of 12.Group One went to sleep. Group Two did not. A few days later, the scientists showed some pictures to both groups. They asked the people to find the picture they saw before. The people in Group One did well. But the people in Group Two did not do well. It wasn't easy for them to remember the picture. What happened? Scientists say that sleep helps our memory. After we learn something new, sleep helps us remember it. And when we don't sleep, we can forget new things.

Scientists say that many teenagers, like Ellen, sleep too little. They go to school and they work, too. They also spend time with their friends. They are always busy and they think that sleep doesn't matter. But scientists say the brains of teenagers are still developing, and sleep is a very important part of the development. When teens sleep less than six hours, they can't think clearly. That is not very helpful for a student who is taking an exam.

65. Is Ellen going to study all night before the history exam?

66. Who studied sleep and memory?

67. How many people were there in each group for this study?

68. Why did Group One remember the picture better?

69. What can we learn from the passage?

Most people know something about the green house effect. Factories sent gases such as carbon dioxide, or CO2, into the atmosphere, the air around the earth. In the past, this wasn’t a problem because trees absorbed, or drank in CO2. But now people are cutting down billlions of trees in many countries. At the same time, factories are sending more CO2 into the atmosphere. It’s difficult to believe, but factories put billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year! One ton is 2000 pounds, so this is a lot of pollution. There is too much CO2 and there aren’t enough trees, so the world is getting warmer. In other words, we have a greenhouse effect. This is terrible for the environment.

What can we do about this? First, we can stop using so much coal and oil. We can learn to use different kinds of energy: the sun, wind, sand heat from volcanoes and from inside the earth. Second, instead of cutting down trees, we should plant more trees. One tree can absorb(吸收) ten pounds of carbon dioxide every year.

The trees are good for the earth’s atmosphere and for Guatemala. In small towns and villages in Guatemala, most women are poor and have hard lives. Trees help them in three ways. First, the Connecticut factory pays them to plant the trees. Their pay is corn, not money. The corn is good for their childrn. Second, these women know a lot about their environment. They know where to plant, when to plant, and what kinds of trees to plant. For example, they plant many fruit trees. The fruit gives them vitamins to their families’ diets. Other trees are good for firewood. In a few years, the women won’t spend so much time walking for wood. Third, all these trees are good for the soil. Now rain can’t wash the soil down the mountains so easily.

This plan isn’t enough to stop the greenhouse effect. But it’s a beginning. The women of Guatemala are helping themselves and helping their environment. As one woman says, ―We’re planting for our famillies, for our children.‖

65. Is there too much co2 in the atmosphere now?

66. How much can a tree absorb carbon dioxide a year?

67. How many good points can women in Guatemala get from planting trees?

68. What can we do to stop the world getting warmer according to Paragraph 2?

In every country, there are thousands of people who want to help others out. Many join organizations run (管理) by their governments, such as the Peace Crops in the United States and V oluntary Service Overseas in Britain. Since the powerful earthquake took place in Sichuan, more than 200 thousand volunteers across China have helped there! They do all kinds of work or come up with ways to help improve life. Some offer their professional skills for free. Others have no qualifications (资历), but they love to work hard to help.

One of the most famous volunteers in the world was Mother Teresa. She could be the best volunteer because she gave her life to help the poorest people of Calcutta. She helped the homeless, cared for the sick, gave out food, and became mother of those without families.

Now more and more teenagers actively look for volunteering opportunities, too. They volunteer because they think it will be fun or they will learn something. They also like the idea of being helpful to others, even if it is just handing out books for the teacher.

As they get older, these reasons are still the same, but there are other important reasons for volunteering such as learning on-the-job, getting work experience, and improving their social life.

All volunteers bring joy to the people they help in so many ways. They might read books to the blind, fix up broken homes, find ways to get water for villages. Could you be a volunteer? What kind of volunteer work could you do? There is someone in the world who needs you.

You may think that only children go to school but there are special schools for guide dogs! At school, of course, guide dogs do not learn mathematics and science like you. They learn how to help blind people. The dogs live at the school for six months and they learn about twenty words- words like ―sit‖ and ―no‖. These dogs wear a special coat with a big handle on it for the blind person to hold.

Dogs can also go to school to learn how to help people who cannot hear. If a person cannot hear, we say he or she is deaf.

Dogs who help deaf people must learn many different sounds. Then they must be able to show the deaf person what is making the sound. When they hear a visitor at the door, the dog learns to walk to the deaf person and then walk to the door. And if a telephone rings, they walk to the deaf man or woman and then walk to the telephone.

These dogs can also help deaf mothers. If a baby is crying in another room, the dog walks to the mother and then to the baby. These dogs wear a yellow coat to show that they are special dogs that are helping a deaf person.

There have been many times when these dogs have saved a life. You may see in a newspaper that a dog heard a fire alarm and lay down near the deaf person’s feet. That is the sign for danger. The person knows that something is wrong and can go away from the fire.

Special dogs can also help people who are disabled in various ways. For example, dogs can pull off their gloves or socks! Think how difficult your life would be if you were blind, deaf or disabled! But if you had a special dog like this to help you, your life would be much easier.

65. Can dogs learn science in special schools?

66. What do guide dogs wear when they help the blind, a special coat or special shoes?

67. What should dogs learn if we want them to help the deaf?

68. How do dogs help a deaf man if there is a fire?
