第三节: 阅读理解(共16小题; 每小题1.5分, 满分24分)

请认真阅读下列短文, 从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

It is its soccer culture that has put the city on the world map. But the UK Prime Minister David Cameron is hoping that Manchester has more to offer than just successful soccer teams. He wants more from the city, aiming to make it as successful as US cities Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta, according to a Daily Mail report from last week.

Cameron said the UK cannot just rely on London’s success, “We need a strong London, but we need a northern powerhouse too.”

You may be wondering what can be found in Manchester to make it a “powerhouse”. Well, it turns out the city has a rich history and an interesting present to explore. As with many northern British cities, it has a working class past as a factory town from Britain’s industrialization, far away from posh (优雅的) London. It was also the place where Germans Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels began to write the Communist Manifesto at Chetham Library, the oldest library in the English-speaking world.

In addition, Manchester has long had a reputation for having a great cultural scene. Popular bands such as Oasis started out in Manchester, and the city’s music scene was so famous in the late 1980s and 1990s that it had its own name “Madchester”. Even nowadays the city’s many students and other young people keep nightclubs busy into the early hours. There is also a great media tradition, as The Guardian newspaper started there and a lot of the BBC has now moved from London to MediaCityUK in Manchester.

Manchester is still a major city in the UK, and its locals will not be shy to tell you that because they are “known for many virtues but not for their modesty”, according to The Economist. Why not look beyond London and pay it a visit? It has much more to offer than two successful soccer teams, after all.

56. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article?

A. To report on David Cameron’s impression of Manchester.

B. To show all the differences between Manchester and London.

C. To explain what makes Manchester stand out in the UK.

D. To introduce the reader to the histor y of Manchester’s splendid football

culture.

article?

A. Located in the south of Britain, it is where the industrial revolution began.

B. Karl Marx once worked as a librarian at Chetham Library in the city.

C. It is where The Guardian newspaper and the BBC started.

D. A music scene named “Madchester” developed in the city.

58. How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed?

A. By giving examples.

B. By making comparisons.

C. By following the order of time.

D. By analyzing causes and effects.

B

I was in K-Mart. I had made an agreement with my grandchildren that every time I yelled at them, I’d buy them a gift costing at least $5.

As I was looking down the row of toys, a gentleman came around the corner pushing a shopping cart. A woman in her forties backed up and he accidentally ran over her foot.

“Look what you have done!” she screamed out.

“I am very sorry, Ma’am.”

The woman reached up and slapped the man as hard as she could. Then she grabbed a Barbie Doll box off the shelf and hit the man on the side of his face. The gentleman grabbed her by the arm to stop her. The woman began to scream. Within several seconds the aisle (过道) was crowded with people, as well as a department manager.

“That man tried to sexually assault (骚扰) me and I hit him to protect myself,”she told the manager.

The manager called the police. Before long the police showed up, handcuffed (上手铐) the man, and began walking him toward the front entrance. I followed the two officers.

“Would you like to know what really happened?” I asked one of the officers.

“We already have the facts from the woman who was assaulted.”

“Do you want the true facts?”

“I th ink you had best move on down the road.”

Looking at the man, I yelled out, “When this is over, you sue (起诉) these men. I’m sure the entire incident is on video somewhere.”

The police car stopped. The officer got out of the vehicle.

“What’s your version?” he asked me.

In less than three minutes, I told the officer what had really happened.

The police officer returned to his car and began talking with the other officer. The two of them opened their doors, took the man out of the car, and took off the handcuffs. They drove away.

“Well, this has been quite a day,” said the man.

I shook the man’s hand.I said, “I want to go home now and write about what happened here. The ending is going to say that I shook the hand of a man who was a complete gentleman throughout a very trying situation.”

He replied, “Actually, I am a Captain in the Army, stationed at Fort Hood Texas.”

I will never forget the large smile on his face.

C. He was shy and lacked courage to prove himself innocent.

D. He was a real gentleman though treated in an unfair way.

A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.

“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components (元件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf (现货供应) and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.

They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of

interdependencie(相互依赖) on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation (计算), sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.

While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board (外置的) power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.

Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on

a day-to-day basis.”

63. The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was

that ______.

A. they had no model in their mind

B. they did not have enough time

C. they had no ready-made components

D. they could not control flight tasks

64. It can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4 that the robotic fly ______.

A. consists of a flight device and a control system

B. can just fly in limited areas at the present time

C. can collect information from many sources now

D. has been put into wide application

65. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?

A. The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.

B. Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.

C. There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.

D. Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.

66. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A. Father of Robotic Fly

B. Inspiration from Engineering Science

C. Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life Insect

D. Harvard Breaks Through in Insect Study

D

By today's standards, my mobile phone is pretty rubbish. It's a Nokia 1616. If that doesn't mean much to you (it’s not the kind of phone you see advertised on television), all you need to know is that it's a small, not very heavy device with which you can send and receive telephone calls and text messages. It also has a very handy torch on the top for when you can't find your keys, or when you drop something on

the floor in the cinema. Other than that, my phone doesn't do much. Well, it has an alarm, and it probably has a calculator and things like that, but it's nothing compared to a smart phone. Why would I want one of those?

I have often bee n told that the big advantage of having a smart phone is that “you can do everything with them!” But when was the last time you saw someone doing “everything” with a smart phone? Okay, so they may have an endless list of functions, but generally they are used for checking social networking sites, playing games, and receiving and replying to emails. I'm happy just doing all of those things at home on my laptop.

As far as I can tell, the best thing about having a smart phone is that you can be connected to the Internet all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love the internet, but I just don't see the point of constantly being online. I can't remember the last time I received a Facebook update which was so very urgent that I had to read it as soon as it appeared, and I can't imagine ever having a job which was so important that I would need to read work-related emails immediately. I would think that if someone needed me urgently, they would just ring me rather than send an email. And my trusty Nokia can manage that.

One of the most peculiar effects of the smart phone is, in my opinion, the newly-found addiction to maps and navigation (导航) systems. Is there anything more boring than knowing exactly where you are all of the time?! How do you get to know an area if you don't get lost there a few times? And if you are dependent on online maps, what happens to those great places you find just by chance? You can't exactly find out from Google maps the journ ey from “here” to “that hidden cafe with the tasty-looking cakes”, or to “that pond next to the church which looks really pretty in the evening sun.” It is, of course, true that we all occasionally need to be pointed in the right direction, but I find that there are often real-life humans you can ask.

There are many benefits of having a very basic mobile phone, like the face that it cost me about twenty pounds, and that I don't have to worry too much about it being stolen. But the main benefit has to be the fact that it provides me with the word “gr eatest excuse” for my bad habits. Whether it's turning up late to events, or getting lost on a trip, or missing buses or trains, or forgetting about an appointment at work, I'm pretty sure I'm covered with the following explanation “I'm really sorry. I don't have a smart phone.”

67. The writer uses his Nokia 1616 mainly to ______.

A. play online games

B. do calculating work

C. check social network sites

D. make calls and text messages

68. It can be inferred from the above passage that ______.

A. work-related emails should be answered immediately

B. a laptop and a smart phone share many functions

C. smart phones should always be connected to the net

D. a Facebook update is usually very important

69. According to the passage, if you use navigation systems, you may ______.

A. miss some really wonderful places

B. find a boring trip actually exciting

C. be persuaded to eat in a certain cafe

D. be misled to a totally wrong place

70. What does the underlined word “peculiar” in the fourth paragraph mean?

A. familiar

B. glorious

C. strange

D. practical

71. The writer's purpose for writing this article is to ______.

A. explain why he doesn't want a smart phone

B. warn readers of the risks of using smart phones

C. complain about the troubles caused by smart phones

D. inform readers of the latest development of mobile phones

第二卷(非选择题, 共31分)

第一部分: 任务型阅读(共10小题; 每小题1分, 满分10分)

注意: 每空填入一个

..最恰当的单词。

Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst. Whether you’ve decided to room with a friend or a total str anger, the rules are still the same. If you want to have a good relationship with your roommate, it all starts with you.

Follow these four tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour:

You’ve heard it before: Communication i s key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I’ve seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. This method creates nothing but awkward situations and general unhappiness.

Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don’t. Don’t put pressure on yourself or your roommate to reach this level, especially when you first meet. Remember, you’re trying to make a new friend, not scare your roommate away. And if your roommate doesn’t end up being your best friend, don’t worry about it. My first-year roommate and I didn’t end up becoming best friends, but we are friends -and I couldn’t have been happier with my roommate situation.

Everyone hates dirty places. If you make a mess, don’t leave it for someone else to clean up. This should go without saying. Don’t be a slob (懒汉). Make sure you do your fair share of dormitory chores, such as taking out the trash and recycling, and cleaning the washroom. Or, at least, just don’t bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage and you should be all right. Most people I’ve encountered(遭遇) in college are messy. You don’t have all the time in the world t o clean your room and keep it organized. But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.

If you want to lose a friend, borrow everything without asking. If you want to keep the relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask whenever you want to reach for snacks, clothes, supplies and anything else that you don’t own. And upon moving into the dorm, you need to make clear which items you

both feel comfortable sharing.

If you want a good roommate, you have to be a good roommate. Yes, there are exceptions. Sometimes being a good person and reaching out to your roommate simply isn’t enough. Sometimes you get st uck with someone who has tons of negative energy or just isn’t happy and doesn’t want any sort of relationship. Whatever the case may be, the name of the game is always the same: respect. If you can’t give it, you definitely don’t deserve to get it.

Four __1__ to Be A Great Roommate

Dormitory life is usually one of the most cherished parts of one’s time at college. Get ready to avoid the common mistakes.

Have a friendly __2__. Instead of burying your feelings or __3__ about

each other, you’d better commun icate with your

roommate frankly to get along well with each

other.

Don’t __4__ the roommates to be your best friends. Sharing the same dorm doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be best friends for each other, b ut it’s better to make a friend than an enemy to experience college __5__.

Clean up after yourself. Or, at least, keep your mess on your side. It is believed that in a shared space, all roommates should help in keeping the room tidy instead of __6__ the burden on just one while the others do whatever they want.

Never take anything __7__ asking. To keep belongings safe and avoid fighting later, let each other know in a polite way if you have to share the other’s items. This rule __8__ to any situation.

If your work fails to win you a good roommate and you get __9__ with someone who doesn’t appreciate your kindness, it is not the end of the world. No matter what happens, showing __10__ always makes sense.

When people aren’t super busy at22 , they are crazy busy exercising, entertaining or parenting. And if there is ever a still moment for thoughts—for example, while waiting 23 at the supermarket or sitting in traffic—out come the mobile phones. So it’s worth noting a study published last month in Science, which shows how 24 people will go to avoid the examination for our thoughts. “We had noted that we are so depend ent on our mobile phones that people seem to find any 25 they can to keep busy,” said Timothy Wilson, a psychology professor at the University of Virginia. In his experiments involving 700 people, the majority found it 26 to be alone with their thoughts for just 6 to 15 minutes. It could be because human beings, as problem solvers and meaning makers, when 27 , tend to think about what’s wrong in their lives. When we aren’t28 our Facebook page, the things we haven’t figured out appear in our minds—29 relationships, professional failures, health concerns, etc. Unless there is a solution, these thoughts just 30 themselves in our heads. But you can’t solve problems 31 you don’t allow yourself time to think about them.It has actually been 32 by our culture, which values doing more than thinking and believes answers are in your hand 33 in your head. “We all fell that busyness is 34 but it’s really harmful,” said Timothy.“There’s a widespread belief that thinking will only slow you down and get 35 , but it’s the opposite.” 36 negative feelings only makes them more powerful, he said. Allowing and 37 the flow of thoughts is part of the solution itself, such as meditation(冥想). Negative feelings are sometimes hard, but they are part of everyone’s life, 38 if you are busy. It is those deep and troubling feelings, and how you 39 them, that make you who you are. While busyness may seem to prevent the flow of sadness, it may also limit your ability to be filled with 40 .

A The clothes you wear. The food you eat. The color of your bedroom walls. Where you go and how you get there. The people you hang around with. What time you go to bed. What do these things have in common? You’re asking. They’re just a few examples of many hundreds of things that your parents controlled for you when you were a child. As a kid, you didn’t have a say in very much that went on; your parents made decisions about everything from the cereal you ate in the morning to the pajamas you wore at night. And it’s a good thing, too-kids need this kind of protection and assistance because they aren’t mature enough to take c are of themselves and make careful decisions on their own. But finally, kids grow up and become teens. And part of being a teen is developing your own identity (身份认同)---one that is separate from your parents’. But as you change and grow into this new person who makes your own decisions, your parents have a difficult time adjusting (调整). They aren’t used to the new you yet --- they only know you as the kid who had everything decided for you and didn’t mind. In many families, it is this adjustment that can cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents. And issues like the type of friends you have or your attitudes to partying can cause bigger quarrels, because your parents still always want to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are. The good news about fighting with your parents is that in many families the arguing will lessen as parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teen has a right to certain opinions. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new roles, though. In the meantime, focus on communicating with your parents. Sometimes this can feel impossible --- like they just don’t see your point of view and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you gain more respect from your parents and you may be able to reach compromises (和解) that make everyone happy. For example, if you are willing to clean your room in order to stay out an hour later, both you and your parents walk away with a good deal. Keep in mind, too, that your parents were teens once and that in most cases, they can relate to what you’re going through. 1.In Paragraph 2. the author . https://www.doczj.com/doc/d517429345.html,plains that parents control kids too much B.proves that kids have no right to give their opinions C.describes how carefully parents look after kids D.explains parents control kids for protection and assistance 2.A lot of fighting breaks out between teens and parents because . A.parents aren’t used to losing control of kids
