Thirty-three years ago, English comedian Marty Feldman completed the autobiography, put it away and set off for Mexico to make a film. He never returned, dying of a heart attack during filming.

Only Feldman’s widow Lauretta knew about the autobiography and the valuable material it contained, but she found reading it too painful and the book remained a secret, hidden from the public.

It was only after her death in 2010 that the family friend Mark Flanagan discovered the manuscript. Four years later from then, it was published for the first time.

The comedian and actor famous for his crooked eyes once wrote: “My eyes perhaps brought on by an accident when a boy stuck a pencil in my eye at school or the result of a

boating accident, when I almost drowned. My looks are my comic equipment, and they are the right packaging for my job.”

Despite being told he was too “strange” for TV by broadcasting legend David Frost, Feldman made a breakthrough in 1967. He became famous for writing, and then landed a successful run of hit TV shows in the Sixties and Seventies, both in the UK and America. Feldman’s comic genius also led to films, including a memorable role as Igor in Mel Brooks’Young Frankenstein, starring Gene Wilder.

He died suddenly in1982 aged 48 on location in Mexico while shooting a film.

Flanagan says: “The day Marty shot his final scene, Graham Chapman received a frantic call from him: ‘Please come quickly---- I think I’m dying.’Graham rushed to Marty’s room, knowing from the tone of his voice that this was not as usual. Marty was still alive but laboring, and Graham asked someone to call an ambulance and the hotel to find life-saving equipment. ‘It was not enough to save him.’”

21. Why didn’t Feldman’s wife want to publish his autobiography?

A. She liked to keep secret from the public.

B. She felt sad when she read it.

C. She didn’t know his autobiography at all.

D. She had a quarrel with her family friend.

22. How long had Feldman been dead before his autobiography was first published?

A. 32 years.

B. 24 years.

C. 18 years.

D. 33 years.

23. What did Feldman think of his appearance?

A. He thought himself to be very handsome.

B. He thought his looks did bad for his performance.

C. He thought he was born crooked eyes.

D. He thought his looks contributes to his career.

24. From the passage, we can know __________.

A. David Frost thought Feldman was a legend and genius

B. Feldman telephoned his friend before he died

C. Feldman was shot when making a film

D. No one knew Feldman died in a hotel

No messy coins—and more importantly -- no embarrassment. This is how young Chinese "go Dutch" these days—scan a QR code and pay their share via smart phones in one easy click.

It was the first time most of the 13 people at my dinner table last weekend had used the function on social networking tool WeChat."It has made going Dutch less embarrassing and so much more fun," said Zhou Ye, a Beijing-based journalist. "Young people think splitting bills this way is fun, and older ones may find it fashionable to do so." Most importantly, it saves people the embarrassment of figuring out who owes what.

Splitting the bill is a relatively new idea to most Chinese. It's being popular among the young people, but for many older folks, who fear "losing face," it feels embarrassing. At dinner parties, families and friends often fight over who will cover the expense.

Used by 600 million Chinese, WeChat is similar to WhatsApp but has many more features. One of them, WeChat Wallet, allows people to pay for almost any service by smart phones. The bill splitting function was launched last year. Owned by Chinese Internet giant Tencent, the payment platform competes with Alibaba's Alipay, which is widely used and also has a bill splitting function.

The smart phone apps that rely on these payment platforms have transformed the lives of many urban Chinese. Massages, haircuts, house cleaning, laundry services and personal trainers can be ordered in your own home. Zhao Mengsha, 28, an editor in a magazine enjoys a manicure (美甲)once every month, and pays half of the price charged in salons. "It's just really convenient," she said. "I wouldn't have thought about getting a massage at work without the apps." Like millions of others, Zhao uses Alipay and WeChat to pay for the services. "Y ou can make do without a wallet but can't live without your smart phone when you go out these days," Zhao said.

25. What is the advantage for the young people to pay their share via smart phones?

A. Saving much money.

B. Avoiding embarrassment of paying the bills.

C. Contacting others more easily after dinner.

D. Having more convenience than other ways.

26. According to the article, why do many old folks "fight" at dinner parties ?

A. Because they think splitting bills funny.

B. Because they want to know who is rich.

C. Because they want to pay the bill.

D. Because they figure out who owes what.

27. What do people think about WeChat wallet and Alipay wallet ?

A. Smart phones with them cost a lot of money.

B. Neither of them will win in the competition.

C. Both of them are acceptable.

D. The payment platform should be improved.

28. What Zhao said in the last paragraph means _____.

A. the wallets are not necessary any more

B. she bought all that she needs through the Internet.

C. she doesn’t know how to work with phones

D. the smart phone apps change people’s life

C

After a few moments, my passenger started a conversation. It began ordinarily enough: “How do you like driving a cab?”

“It’s OK,” I said. “I make a living and meet interesting people sometimes. How about you? His reply intrigued me. “I would not change jobs even if I could make twice as much money doing something else.”

I’d never heard that before. “What do you do?’’

“I’m in the neurology department at New Y ork Hospital.”

Then I decided to ask for this man’s help. We were not far from the airport.

“Could I ask a big favor of you? I have a son, 15, a good kid. He wants a job, but a 15-year-old can’t get hired unless his old man knows someone who owns a business, and I don’t.”I paused. “Is there any possibility that you could get him some kind of summer job?”

He didn’t respond for a while. Finally, he said: “Well, the medical students have a summer research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school record.”I tore off a piece of my brown lunch bag, and he scribbled his name on it and paid me. It was the last time I ever saw him.

After I nagged, yelled, and finally threatened to cut off his pocket money, my son Robbie sent off his grades to the guy the next morning.

Two weeks later, when I arrived home from work, my son was beaming. He handed me a letter from my passenger, saying he was to call my passenger’s secretary for an interview.

Robbie got the job. He did minor tasks, unpaid, but he fit in well. The following summer, he worked at the hospital again with more responsibility. As high school graduation neared, Dr Plum was kind enough to write letters of recommendation for Robbie and he was accepted by Brown University. Finally, Dr Robert Stern, the son of a

taxicab driver, became OB-GYN chief president at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

Some might call it fate, and I guess it was. But it shows that something as ordinary as a taxi ride can change your life.

29. What does the underlined word “intrigued” in the second paragraph mean?

A. interested

B. confused

C. benefited

D. challenged

30. After the author got the passenger’s name, he ___________.

A. found that his son got the summer job immediately.

B. found his son wasn’t interested in getting a summer job.

C. had difficulty persuading his son to send his school record.

D. asked for his help more than once.

31. Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?

A. The author loves his job and devotes himself to it.

B. Robbie was very eager to work at New York Hospital.

C. The small summer job led to Robbie’s career.

D. Dr. Plum promised to help the author without hesitation.

32. The author develops the article mainly by________.

A. providing examples

B. following the natural time order

C. making comparisons

D. presenting causes and effects

D

One of my friend expressed concern about the “listening” capability of smart phones.

She said she had been planning a funeral and searched for funeral homes. She typed “f-u-n-e-r-a-l”and Google suggested funeral homes near her as well as other funeral-related websites.

Just then, a friend called her. The friend suggested that the woman make food called “funeral potatoes” for a gathering after the service.

After the call ended, the woman returned to her Internet search. She again typed “f-u-n-e-r-a-l”. This time, the first suggestion to appear on Google was “funeral potatoes”.

It seemed the cell phones had listened to what they were talking about. Cell phones may indeed be listening to us, even when we are not using them. Stories on the Internet tell of people who got Internet search results or advisements based on words they said aloud near their cell phones.

When we give an app permission to use our cell phone microphone it is not clear when it is listening to us. There are no signal lights or icons that show when the microphone is turned on.

How should we stop our phones from listening? First, be sure to check the permissions

you have given apps to access the microphone on your phone. Some apps need the microphone access to work correctly, but others do not. Never give permission to use your microphone unless the app needs access to it.

Second, turn off the microphone for any apps you do not want to have access to your microphone. You may want to turn off microphone access for all of the apps on your phone. If you find an app requiring microphone access you can always turn it back on again.

To make sure apps are not listening to you, turn off microphone access on your iPhone. Go to Settings, then Privacy, then Microphone, to see a list of all of the apps that have asked for permission to use your microphone.

Turn off permission for any apps you do not want using your phone’s microphone.

You can also turn the phone’s power off or leave the phone in another room to make sure you are not being listened to.

33. What’s the passage mainly about?

A. Microphone is useful in life.

B. Using microphone is dangerous.

C. How to use microphone correctly?

D. Microphone may listen to you.

34. When the microphone is turned on, __________.

A. no sign will warn you

B. the signal lights will be on

C. some icons will remind you

D. the bell will ring

35. Which of the following advice is mentioned in the passage?

A. Unload some apps.

B. Don’t allow the app to use microphone unless necessary.

C. Don’t set microphone on your phone.

D. the good policy of China

More and more passengers are worried about texting and driving. If a texting driver is making you nervous but you’re not sure how to bring the topic up, here are some ideas. The direct approach

You can go straight to the point and say, “I’m sorry, but I get really nervous when people text and drive at the same time.” 36 Most people will admit it’s probably not a

good idea or they’ll at least put down the phone.

The subtle approach

If yo u don’t feel comfortable telling a driver to quit texting directly, try hinting. “Would you like me to type for you since you’re driving?” 37 For example,“Did you see that truck ?”“I’ve seen a lot of policemen out today. ”

The life-saving approach

If a driver continues to text and drive or laugh at you because you are worrying about it, avoid riding with that person. 38 This will make him feel ashamed. A little shame makes people think twice about bad habits.

Speaking of parents

39 If you are stuck in a car with an adult who is texting behind the wheel, be direct and tell him to stop. Most adults know that parents are constantly telling kids not to text and drive, so they should feel embarrassed enough to put down the phone.

If a driver absolutely won't stop texting or laugh at you for being nervous, don't argue.

40 Just get out of the car as soon as you can. Next time that driver offers to give you a ride, you can say, “No, thanks.”

A. Or point out things the driver has missed seeing.

B. The last thing anyone needs is a texting driver.

C. As we all know, it’s not just young drivers who text.

D. Take away the driver's car key.

E. Let the texting driver knows you’re cutting him off.

F. Ask the driver who is texting to hand over the phone.

G. Wait to see how the person responds.

When I was fifteen years old, our family moved in a new house and I got my own room. Since then, my parents have seldom come into my room and I have had a privacy completely. While it was still necessary for my parents to support me economically and mentally at that time, I was old enough to think and decide by myself which I should do. I wanted my privacy to be respect and thought it was important for me to become an adult. I agree that get my own place and becoming independence are two important ways for me to preserve privacy. By the way, I also agree that every child thinks privacy is important. Maybe it's only important to those children who are mature, such as myself.

March 5th, 2018 Monday Sunny

In our class meeting, a folk artist invited by our monitor gave us a lesson on paper cutting. As soon as he entered the classroom, he was given a warm welcome. After a brief introduct ion, he told us that Chinese paper cutting is a traditional art form and that it’s a kind of folk culture with a long history. Then he showed us the basic steps and skills of paper cutting, after which he instructed us how to cut the paper into different shapes as we watched attentively. Next, we started to have a try on our own. The folk artist walked around us, guiding us patiently. Much to our joy, all of us showed our works and took a picture with him.

Admiring the different shapes cut by ourselves, we were extremely excited. I have benefited a lot from this experience, hoping we can have more activities of this kind in the future.

A. A B. B C. C D. D 【答案】B

A When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake. That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck (露台) of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm. Challenging the weather that threatened to damping our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado (龙卷风) was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad. Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cot tage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind. “Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled (爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror. My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away. “Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said. 21. What did the family do before the storm came? A. They left the motels. B. They packed up the cars. C. They stayed on the beach. D. They visited their neighbors. 22. What was the family’s immediate action when they saw the tornado approach? A. Closing their eyes tightly. B. Praying in silent terror. C. Crawling on the ground. D. Running away at once. 23. Where did the family stay in the storm? A. Under a deck. B. In a basement. C. Inside the car. D. Behind a door. 24. What can be the best title for the text? A. Life on the beach B. An Unusual Cottage C. Surviving a Storm D. My Admirable Family B The Best of Alaska
