On January 15, a little girl from the Chinese mainland was on the subway in Hong Kong. She was eating something. A local man told her not to do so. The girl’s mother told him to mind his own business. A quarrel started. Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway rules say people cannot eat on the subway. The rules say the train will be filled with the smell of food. They say the smell will attract mice to the train. These mice might chew the cables and cause safety problems for passengers. People caught eating on the subway will be fined up to 2,000 Hong Kong dollars (1,625 yuan), Xinhua reported. Signs clearly say “no eating” and the rule is often announced on the subway and in stations. However, the girl and her parents say they did not notice this.

This seemingly small event has started a debate on the Internet, Xinhua reported.

A netizen named Zhu Hongying said some Chinese consider bad habits like talking loudly in public places, spitting or jumping queues as small matters. They simply don’t care because they think public places are not their private homes. “This kind

of thinking shows a lack of a sense of social morality,”she pointed out.

Many people agree. “The parents (of the girl) should have apologized for their mistake,” Zhang Nan, 15, a Senior 1 student at Diaotai High School, Shaanxi, said to Teens. “Quarreling after making the mistake only makes the situation more embarrassing for them.”

Reports of Chinese people behaving badly at tourist sites at home and abroad are nothing new. Such reports are affecting the way other countries see Chinese people. Some foreign airports put up signs in Chinese telling Chinese people not to talk loudly and not to spit everywhere. Many Chinese people find this embarrassing.

All this shows that one of the secrets to a good journey is to learn about local customs and taboos before you go.

A recent report at Dickinson State University in the United States will have made uncomfortable reading for parents in China.

Over the last four years, the college in North Dakota had issued diplomas(文凭) to 400 foreign students despite their failure to complete the required coursework. Roughly 95 percent of these students were Chinese.

The report also criticized the school’s recruitment (招生) process. Some overseas students were accepted with bad English or hadn’t achieved the average “C” grade they needed. There isn’t any trace of diligence in many of them.

"Parents are surrendering their last resources to wager (压赌) them on a child’s future by sending them abroad," said Lao Kaisheng, an education policy researcher at Capital Normal University. "If these children don’t get the decent jobs and the salary that is expected, their parents will naturally be sucked into poverty."

The desire to send offspring to schools overseas has existed for decades, although today it is largely fueled by the belief that it gives youngsters an advantage in the tough domestic employment market.

However, not many Chinese families have enough saved in the bank to cover the tuition fees and accommodation and living expenses. Instead, many are choosing to take on massive debt at a critical time in their own life. It is a gamble, experts say, and the stakes are high.

"People need to think over the input and potential output, as well as the risks that any investment brings," said Zhang Jianbai, who runs a private school in Yunnan province.

"Those who are now suffering trouble or financial difficulties would not have been in this position had they chosen a more suitable way to educate their children," he added.

Here is an examle:

After graduating from the university in Guangdong, Wang Jianhai was sent to Texas to get a master’s degree, which his family believed would give him an edge in the

job market. His father worked at an electronics factory and earned more than 10,000 yuan a month, so the adventure was not a great financial burden. However, after his return, 26-year-old Wang was no better prepared to find work. Even his English skills had not improved, he said, as "we stayed with other Asians most of the time". Eventually, his parents had to invest more money to help their only son eke out a meager living by running his own electronics store.

"He hasn’t earned a penny back for us, even though we’ve taken care of him for 26 years, while other people of his age might have earned up to 200,000 yuan by now," said his 66-year-old father.

"We could have had a decent life after retirement with our savings, but now we’ve painted ourselves into a tight corner," he added bitterly.

Although parents see an overseas education as a shortcut to success, experts argue that very few truly understand the vast differences in quality that exist among colleges in developed nations.

Zhou Xiaozheng, a sociology professor at Renmin University of China, said everybody knows Chinese parents are willing to spend money on their children, but he warned that those looking to benefit today are largely "second- and third-rate colleges that don’t offer scholarships or subsidies". "The quality of the schools or universities is varied, from heaven to earth," he added.

Parents need to be reasonable, he said, as well as "clear about what they expect from the study period, mental development or practical skills".

60. What was his father’s feeling after Wang Jianhai’s return from Texas?

A. touched

B. regretful

C. merciful

D. positive

61. Which of the following is True according to the passage?

A. Spending time and money looking for shortcuts is well worth a trial.

B. People should realize not money but hardwork is the key to a good degree.

C. More Chinese parents will be encouraged to send children to study abroad by the experts.

D. It’s not advisable to choose a school or college abroad with high rank and long history.

62. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Applying to DSU

B. Choosing universities abroad

C. Missing the grade

C

A robot is machine designed to work like a living person. The word robot was actually invented in 1920 by Karel Capek, a Czechoslovakian wirter. But although the word is quite new, the idea of machines acting like people is very old. In the second century BC, Philon of Byzantium designed statues that perfomed clever tricks.

Today throughout the world thousands of real robots do many important tasks that help people. Robots can do many of the things that people do, as well as some thingss people can’t do. Many of the tasks that robots perform are boring or actually unhealthy for people.

Some robots are built to explore places too dangerous for people to visit. They can take pictures and send back useful information without putting people at risk. One of the areas where robots explorers are used extensively is in space. Astronauts need special equipment to survive in space. Robots do not need air, water or food. They can work on distant planets keeping in touch with Earth by radio signals. NASA’s Sojourner Rover was the very first robot to travel across part of another planet. In 1997, the six-wheeled rover explored part of the surface of Mars.

The test robot Afghan Explorer may one day visit war zones. Working as a war reporter, it could send pictures and interviews back to a TV station in a safer place. The Dante 2 is similar to the Afghan Explorer. This eight-legged robot can climb into the crater of a red-hot volcano to collect gas samples(样本) and take photos with its eight cameras. Nomad Rover, another robot explorer, is the size of a small car. It has trekked through hot deserts and icy lands on it own., collecting information for scientists at home.

Many robots work underwater. They map the ocean floor, monitor sea life or find sunken wrecks(残骸). These robots can travel deep underwater far more easily than people. Robots can stay underwater for many days at a time and travel hundreds of kilometres exploring the oceans. Underwater robots, such as Deep Drone, can travel

to the ocean floor and help recover crashed aircraft or sunken ships. Deep Drone can travel around 40 times deeper than unprotected human divers.

Some robots are rescue robots: they can save lives. They do this by fighting fires, searching for survivers after disaster, or handling dangerous objects such as unexploded bombs. Bomb disposal robots can look at suspect packages with their cameras. They relay the information to someone at a safe distance.

As robot technology advances, our robots are becoming smarter and are able to help us with more and more aspects of our lives. Robots have enhanced our work efficiency greatly. Robots won’t always be machines hidden away in dangerous factories. Work is already being done to develop robots which will help us in our kitchens or on our farms. What do you think robots might be doing to help us in the future?

63. Which of the following aspects is Not mentioned in the passage?

A. Military

B. Astronomy

C. Education

D. Rescue

64. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Robots: A Valuable Resource

B. Robots: Future Applications

C. Living in the Robot Age

D. Leading a Robot-Style Life

65. Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?

A. The Afghan Explorer has not been put in use yet.

B. The Dante 2 is used to collect information about volcanoes.

C. Nomad Rover can endure miserable weather conditions.

D. Deep Drone is designed to protect human divers.
