二、完形填空

1、Jules Verne‘s most famous book is ―Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea‖.(A

―league‖is an old word meaning about three miles.) In those days submarines had not been invented, but he describes an underwater ship very like a modern submarine. The captain of the submarine, called Captain Nemo, and his men have many strange adventures and find many strange things at t he bottom of the ocean. He was a very good story-teller.

His characters often did surprising and sometimes impossible things, but they always seemed to be real people.

In another book, ―Around the world in 80 days‖, Jules Verne creates Mr. Fogg, the hero, who made a bet that he would travel around the world in 80 days. Nowadays this may seem easy to you, but in those days there were no planes or even cars. Mr fogg and his servant traveled in many different ways, even on an elephant at one time! If you want to know their result, you should read the book..

In all his books Jules verne used his scientific knowledge as well as his imagination in describing future inventions. Sometimes he was wrong, of course, but often the accuracy of his descriptions is very clever.

2、In the UK, in business situations, when you meet someone for the first time you

shake hands and say ― How do you do?‖ This is not really a question, and the reply to it is another greeting such as ―how do you do?‖ or ―hello‖ or ―I am very pleased to meet you‖. Or, if you have met the person sometime before, ―it is good to see you again‖.

You do not shake hands every time you meet someone, you just greet them. If you are invited to someone‘s house for dinner, it is usual to take a present---some chocolates or flowers or, if you know them quite well, a bottle of wine. If you do not know the host well, do not be the last person to leave. Telephone the next day to thank the host for the meal.

English people do not like to talk about personal things, and tend to avoid religion, politics and money.

Good topics for small talk are the weather, holidays, weekend activities, gardens and architecture, especially houses and homes. When you go to a pub or bar, it‘s usual to take turns to buy a drink for everyone in your group and pay for the drinks when you get them from the bar and before you drink them.

3、The ancient Olympic Games were part of a religious festival in honor of the Greek

god Zeus, the father of all Greek gods and goddesses. The festival and games were held in Olympia, a religious Sanctuary.

In the ancient games, athletes received prizes worth large amounts of money. In fact the word ―athlete‖ is an ancient Greek word, meaning―one who competes for a prize‖.

The marathon was not an event of the ancient Olympic games. The marathon is a modern event that was first introduced in the Olympic Games in 1896. It was named after

a village called marathon where t he Persians were defeated by a small Greek army. The

news of the victory was brought to Athens by a soldier, who ran the 26miles from the village of Marathon to the capital. 26 miles was therefore adopted as the distance of the modern marathon race

4、Traffic in India means a mixture of all kinds of vehicles on the road. About 700,000

new cars have been sold in India in the last 12 months, and about twice that many used cars have been traded.

The country‘s 35 million motorcycles and scooters make it the world‘s largest two-wheel market. But because there are still big differences in people‘s incomes, the roads are full of a whole variety of vehicles, lots of them not motorized.

A ride with a taxi driver in New Delhi gives a flavor of a typical Indian-style traffic

with all kinds of vehicle held up in city streets or in long lines on narrow country lanes.

Cars, lorries and buses back up behind a cart pulled by one animal or another. ―India has everything on the roads.‖The taxi driver says. ―You have to watch out for pedestrians, bicycles, carts, cows, donkeys and even elephants. Three things are recommended to drive here, a horn, brakes and good luck..‖ Just then we were stopped by a young boy and his cow.

Given the hazards, it is not surprising that special ceremonies are held for new car owners in which the steering wheel and the driver are both blessed.

Passage 1

There are advantages and disadvantages to 1 both Asian and Western educational methods. For example, one advantage 2 to the education in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science 3 than American students. They also study more hours each day than Americans 4 do . The study is difficult, but it 5 prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, 6 yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.

The advantage to the education in North America, 7 on the other hand, is that students learn to think by themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values 8 new ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven‘t memorized 9 as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries 10 have .

Passage 2

A study has shown that fitness is the key 1 to long life, irrespective of body shape 2 or even smoking habits. Researchers discovered that people who exercise live longer than 3those who do not , even if they are overweight and smoke.

The study found that 4 the least fit of the 6,000 middle-aged men in the study were five times more likely to die within six years of the start of the research than the fittest. This was true 5 whether or not the men had heart problems, smoked or were overweight. Scientists concluded that it was better 6 to be fat and active than skinny and sedentary. Dr Ken cooper, a fitness expert, said, ― You are better off smoking a packet of cigarettes a day and exercising regularly than 7 being a non –smoker and sedentary.‖ Although he adds, ―But don‘t misunderstand me. I am not endorsing 8 smoking , I am trying to tell you how dangerous it is to be sedentary.‖

The British Government is putting pressure 9 on manufacturers to reduce high levels of sugar in food and to restrict the hard-sell of junk food to children in order to improve the nation‘s health. But the new study suggests the Government should encourage more people 10to exercise

Passage 6

Traffic in India means a mixture of all kinds of vehicles on the road. About 700,000 new cars

1 have been sold in India in the last twelve months, and about twice that many used cars have been traded.

The country's 35 million motorcycles and scooters make it the world's largest two-wheel market. But because there are still big differences 2 in people's incomes, the roads are full of a whole variety of 3 vehicles , lots of them not motorised.

A ride 4 with a taxi driver in New Delhi gives a flavour of a typical Indian-style traffic with all kinds of vehicle held up in city streets or in long lines 5 on narrow country lanes. Cars, lorries and buses back up behind a cart 6 pulled by one animal or another. "India has everything on the roads," the taxi driver says. "You have to 7 watch out for pedestrians, bicycles, carts, cows, donkeys and even elephants. Three

things 8are recommended to drive here, a horn, brakes and good luck." Just then we were stopped 9 by a young boy and his cow.

Given the hazards, it's not surprising 10 that special ceremonies are held for new car owners in which the steering wheel and the driver are both blessed.

Passage 8

4 story-teller. His characters often did surprising and sometimes impossible things, but they always seemed

5 to be real people.

In another book, “Around the World in Eighty Days”, Jules Verne creates Mr. Fogg, the hero, 6. who made a bet that he would travel around the world in eighty days. Nowadays this may seem 7 easy to you, but in those days there were no planes or even cars. Mr. Fogg and his servant traveled in many different 8 ways , even on an elephant at one time! If you want to know their result, you should read the book.

In all his books Jules Verne used his scientific knowledge 9 as well as his imagination in describing future inventions. 10 Sometimes he was wrong, of course, but often the accuracy of his descriptions is very clever.

1.有一种观点认为:城市生活比乡村生活好。2.你对这种观点的看法3、你的结论

Some people believe that town life is better than country life. I don’t agree with this. Town life can be convenient to us in many aspects. For example, you can move around easily, shopping can be more fun in a big shopping mall and you can enjoy a more colorful nightlife. But there are also many disadvantages. It is much noisier than in the country. Air pollution is more serious. It is not easy to park your car. It costs more to live in town. To name but a few is enough. Therefore, I prefer country life.

How to keep healthy

Nowadays, more and more people know the importance of keeping healthy. Without a healthy body, we can do nothing. For me, there are three main ways to keep healthy. First, it is necessary to keep a balanced diet, which is the basis of good health. It is better for us to have more fruit and vegetables everyday. Secondly, it is important to take regular exercises, such as swimming, jogging and so on. Last but not least, it is essential to keep in a good mood. Relaxation and entertainment are ways to renew our spirits and release our stress. When we make healthy habits a part of our everyday life, we are bound to keep healthy.

2、阐述你的理由

3、作出结论

In a modern city, there are many means of transportation, such as subway, taxi, bus and so on. But my favorite means of transportation is by bike.

First, riding a bike is good for keeping healthy. I spend one hour riding a bike to my office on my working day, and I think it is a good form of physical exercise. Secondly, it is money-saving. Recently the private car drivers always complain the price of gas is higher and higher, but if you ride a bike, it will cost you nothing. Thirdly, it is beneficial for protecting the environment, so it is a “green”form of transportation.

Therefore, although it has some disadvantages, I like riding a bike best.

A day to remember /an unforgettable day(你一生中一个无法忘怀的日子) September the 10th is a day to remember, Because it‘s a day to thank those who care us ,teach us, and the most important , educate us to be useful to the society. I stillremember it clearly when I was denied the opportunity to participate in the writing contest, my heart sank.

A man on a lonely island A man on a lonely island can act as he likes because he has no one to consider except himself. But when Robinson Crusoe discovered footprints in the sand, he could no longer act precisely as before. He had to think of the existence of a companion and the possible effect of his actions upon a second person. Two people thus suddenly brought face to face can not ignore each other. Either one must overcome the other or they must arrive at some form of coexistence. In the latter event they have first to convince each other of their friendly intentions. When a man comes upon a tribe whose language he does not know, he will nod and smile, make friendly gestures and perhaps send them small gifts. If these offers are successful, the tribesmen will take him to their village and bring him food and drink. Moreover, the arrival of an important visitor is something out of the ordinary. So, as an answer to the feeling that their guest should be treated as well as they can, something better than the ordinary food will be provided, and the meal followed by singing and dancing. The host wishes to make his guest feel at home, the guest to show thanks of the kindness he has received. Questions of good behavior and consideration for others maybe have arisen in one form or another since social life began, because social life is impossible if each person thinks only of himself. If men are to live together in a community they must, as a measure of common sense and in the interest of all, accept a certain number of rules and conventions. Such agreement is more than ever necessary. Chaos may result when four people play bridge according to widely different conventions. The same is true of social life. 1. A man on a lonely island can act as he likes, because _______. D. he feels it unnecessary to consider others 2. Two strangers will never get along well unless _______. C. they make peace with each other or one defeats the other謀荞抟箧飆鐸怼类蒋薔點鉍杂篓鳐驱。 3. If you meet a tribe whose language you don't know, you can offer all the followings EXCEPT___. A. teaching them your language 4. The arrival of an important visitor is something out of the ordinary, so they will. C. receive the visitor better 5. If you want to live well in a community,. manners? How does one know what to do and what not to do? Well, here are some examples. A person with good manners never laughs at people when they are in trouble. Instead, he tries to help them. He is always kind to others. When people are waiting for a bus, he takes his turn. He does not push to the front of the line. On the bus he gives his seat to an older person or a person with a very young child. If he knocks into someone, or gets in his way, he says "Excuse me" or "I'm sorry". He says "Please" when he asks for something and "Thank you" when he receives something. He stands up when he is speaking to an older person, and he does not sit down until the other person takes his seat. He does not interrupt other people when they are talking. Countries that import ivory are refusing to accept ivory shipments that do not have legal export documents. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in a treaty signed by 91 nations led to the program for saving endangered elephants in Africa.Successful efforts also have been made in protecting Africa's endangered mountain gorillas. Almost 400 of the gorillas survive in a volcano area on the border of Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. The mountain gorilla population has remained about the same for 15 years. This happened partly, because Rwanda developed an important business that depends on protecting the gorillas. Visitors there can pay to get close to watch the gorillas in the animals' traditional home area. Another successful program is to take endangered animals out of their natural homes. The animals are put into zoos or other protected areas where they can reproduce in safety. The goal of many of these programs is to produce enough animals to put back into the wild. 51.
