Photographs are everywhere. They decorate (装饰)the walls of homes and are used in stores for sales of different goods. The news is filled with pictures of fires, floods, and special events. Photos record the beauties of n ature. They ca n also bring thi ngs close that are far away. Through photos, people can see wild ani mals, cities in foreig n Ian ds, and even the stars in outer space. Photos also tell stories.

Reporting the news through photos is called photojournalism. At times photojournalists tell their stories through a sin gle picture. At other times, they use a group of pictures to tell a story. Each picture is like a chapter in a book, which can do more tha n record the facts. It can also be a stro ng force for social cha nge.

Jacob Riis was among the first photojour nalists. He took pictures of parts of New York City where the poor lived. Riis believed that poverty(贫穷) caused crime, and he used photos to help him prove his point. A few years later, the photos of small children working in factories by Lewis Hine shocked the public. Hine ' s pictures helped bring about laws to protect such children.

Hun dreds of pictures may have to be take n in order to get one or two really good photos. It takes scie nee to have the photo come out clearly and art to make a photo that has a good desig n and expresses feeli ng. Photojournalists make an actual record of what they see. A photo, however, can be both a work of art and an actual record. It can record an important event as a beautiful or excit ing picture.

As historical and artistic documents(文献),photos can become more important over time. Today photojournalists still have their pictures appear in newspapers and magazines. They also publish(发表)them in books and on the Internet.

This was no ordinary class. The stude nts who came together were all scie nee or engin eeri ng professors at Corn ell Uni versity. They had in terrupted their research to accept an in vitati on to take part in an unusual experiment: “ an interesting week of poetry.

” This clasiowas part of a study

an swer the questi ons: Why is scie nee difficult for many non scie nee stude nts? What can teachers learn about teach ing if they take a class that is not in their field?

The stude nts in the poetry class liste ned to lectures and took no tes. They had readi ng tasks and had to write three short papers. All stude nts no ticed one thing -the importa nee of spoke n words. In scie nee and engin eeri ng classes, the in structors put tables and draw ings on the blackboard. But in this poetry class, the instructors just talked. They didn ' t write anything on the board.

The scientists and engineers noticed one similarity between scienee and poetry. In both subjects, students need to find layers (层次) of meaning . Some layers are simple, clean, and on the surface; other layers are deeper and more difficult. This search for differe nt levels of meaning doesn ' lhappen much in undergraduate (本科) scienee classes, but it is important later, in

graduate school. And it is always important in humanities

Both the poetry instructors and their students learned something about teaching from this experie nee. One poetry in structor, for example, now sees the importa nee of using in formative as he teaches. Most of the scie ntists agreed on several poin ts. First, huma nities classes might help scie nee stude nts to see patter ns and decide which in formati on is importa nt. Second, the poetry class was fun. One engin eer decided, “ We n eed to cha nge the way we teach engin eeri ng to make

to make it an enjoyable experie nee for stude nts. ”

But perhaps the most importa nt result of the experie nee was this; All of the professors bega n to think about how

they teach and how they can teach better. 49.

What do we know about this unu sual class? A. The teachers did lots of writing on the board B. The teacher were in vited to atte nd several lectures. C. The stude nt were professors from a uni versity D. The stude nts were study ing scie nee and huma nities. 50. The experime nt was desig ned to find out ___________

A. how to teach the students in the scienee class

B. whether poetry is difficult for scie nee stude nts

C. what to be taught in the huma nities class

D. why many huma nities stude nts find scie nee hard. 51. Finding levels of meaning is __________ .

A. importa nt for graduate stude nts in huma nities

B. difficult for graduate stude nts in huma nities

C. com mon for un dergraduate stude nts in scie nee

D. easy for un dergraduate stude nts in scie nee.

52. What did the scie nee professors lear n after the experime nt?

A. They should cha nge the way they teach

B. A poem could be expla ined in clear defi niti ons.

A. telli ng the story through picture

C. publish ing historical papers

B. decorating the walls of homes D. express ing feeli ng through pictures

C. A poetry class could be more in formative.

The Chin ese had lear ned to graft ( 嫁接) differe nt trees together to make new kinds of fruit. They passed this scie nee on to others, in cludi ng the Roma ns. The Roma ns used graft ing to grow the apple. Trad ing along the Silk Road led to world-wide bus in ess 2,000 years before the World Wide Web.

E Did you know that women' sbrains are smaller than men' s?The average women' sbrain weighs 10% less than men ' s. Since research has shown that the bigger the brain, the cleverer the animal, men must be more intelligent (聪明的)than women. Right? Wrong. Men and women always score similarly on intelligence tests, despite the difference in brain size. Why? After years of study, researchers have concluded that it ' s whatatter s ,i n sitljush athe size of the brain. The brain consists of “ grey matter ” "awidite matter ” . While men have more of the latter, the amount of “ thinking ” brain is almost exactly the same in both sexes.

It has bee n suggested that smaller brain appears to work faster, perhaps because the two sides of the brain are better connected in women. This means that little girls tend to learn to speak earlier, and that women can understand sorts of information from different sources at the same time.

或者是on one hand? on the other hand? 或者是,in the first place? in the second place? etc. I am eighteen or I am eighteen years old or I am an eighteen-year-old boy/girl. 又如,I do not like playing basketball or I dislike playing basketball. My father is an engineer who works at a computer company. My father is an engineer. He works at a computer company.
