The warden（管理人）served the soup from a pot(锅) at meal times. Each boy was allowed one bowl of soup and no more. Oliver Twist and other children slowly starved（挨饿）for three months until finally, they became quite wild with hunger.
There was one boy who was tall for his age, and was not used to being hungry all the time, as his father had kept a small cook shop. This boy told his friends that he had to have another bowl of soup each day. If he did not, he was afraid that one night he might eat the small young boy who slept next to him. They decided one of them should walk up to the warden after supper that evening and ask for more food. They wrote their names on pieces of paper and picked one out. Death Valley officially became a national park in 1994. Death Valley can be dangerously cold during the winter months. But, during summer months, the air temperature has been as high as 57 degrees Celsius. The extreme heat of Death Valley has killed people in the past. Death Valley does not forgive those who are not careful.
Much of Death Valley is flat and extremely dry. In fact, scientists believe it is the driest place in the United States. In some areas the ground is nothing but salt. Nothing is able to grow in this salty ground.
However, the valley is full of life. Wildflowers grow very quickly after even a little rain. Some desert plants can send their roots down more than 18 meters to reach water deep in the ground.
Many people visit Death Valley in late winter and early spring, when wildflowers come to life there. This year, some people called the wildflower display(展示)a “super bloom.”Many storms in October brought a lot more rain to the valley than normal.
Several kinds of birds live in Death Valley, as do mammals(哺乳动物) and reptiles(爬行动物). Visitors might see the dog-like animal called the coyote(丛林狼), and other animals. Many different snakes live there too.
Titus Canyon is one of the most popular places to visit in the park. It has huge mountains and colorful rocks. Some visitors come to Death Valley for just a day. Air pollution(污染) is a killer. The World Health Organization says it kills about seven million people around the world each year. Even if polluted air does not kill us, it can make us very sick. Breathing dirty air may do more than hurt your body. It can also influence your brain and your ability to think.
A new study shows that air pollution can cause a “huge” reduction in our intelligence(智力). The study was carried out by researchers at Peking University in China and Yale University in the United States. Xi Chen of the Yale School of Public Health led the study.
The researchers studied about 25,000 people from across China. The youngest people in the study were 10 years old, while the oldest was 90. They came from 25 of China’s 34 provinces. These Chinese men, women and children were given language and math tests. Then researchers compared the test results with levels of pollution in the air. They found that breathing polluted air can reduce(减少) a person’s education level by about one year.
Chen said that the effect（影响）generally is worse for those over 64 years of age, for men and for those with little or no education. “The older persons are more influenced. And we find, quite interestingly, males are more influenced than females. And people working outdoors are
more influenced than people working indoors.”
The researchers reported that long-term exposure(暴露) to air pollution can influence a person’s mental abilities in two areas: language and maths. They noted that the influence of pollution on spoken language ability is even more serious as people age, especially among men and the less educated.
