第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

A chimpanzee (黑猩猩) is a primate (灵长类动物). This group includes tiny bush babies, monkeys, and humans. Full-grown chimps are 4 to 5feet tall. The males weigh about 100 pounds, while the females weigh 90 pounds or less. Chimpanzees have long fingers and toes (脚趾),and they are covered with dark fur except on their faces, which are very expressive.

Chimpanzee Habitat

Chimpanzees live in western and central Africa. Some chimps live in thick rain forests. Others live in thinner woodland.

Chimps usually walk on all four legs, but they can also walk upright. Chimps are good climbers and they can swing through trees. They usually sleep in trees at night.

_________________________

Chimps live in groups, called communities, which may contain up to 80 members. Within each community are many smaller groups of friends and family members. Young chimps stay with their mothers until they are about 8 years old.

Just like human beings who live and work in groups, some chips are more powerful than others. Getting a high position depends on more than size. Group leaders are usually strong-willed and clever.

Chimps often “argue” over food to protect their children. Most quarrels end quickly, but sometimes chimps get hurt. Chimpanzees are powerful animals, and they will bite and kick if angry.

Chimpanzees eat fruits, plants, insects, eggs, and small animals. They use small thin branches to “fish” inside insect nests for food. They use leaves to get water to drink. They also use stones to open nutshells.

Chimpanzee Communication

Chimpanzees communicate with their voices. They shout loudly to show anger, fear and other emotions. They warn each other when enemies are near. Chimps also communicate with gestures and facial expressions. If a chi mp holds out its hand, it is begging for food. A hug means “Hello” or “I’m frightened.” Some chimps have even learned to use sign language.

One evening last summer, when I asked my 17-year-old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response surprised me, “What’s a colander(漏勺)?” he asked.

I could only blame myself. Nobody’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for.

As parents, while we focus on our child’s confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommate, boyfriend, husband, or father. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, “What’s for dinner?” So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no.

For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust (馅饼皮) and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.

I knew that he would rather have shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother----he tried to beg off sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive----but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. “I appreciate more what you do as a mom,” he told me one day. https://www.doczj.com/doc/f13797879.html, Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more important, he realizes there’s nothing masculine(男子气的) about being helpless. Not only can he make his own dinner, he can make it for his family, too. That’s what I call a man.

D. always thought it attractive to do housework

26. The underlined part “more than just housekeeping” shows that Ray ______.

A. fell in love with housework

B. did other work in the house

C. began to be more confident

D. acknowledged the author’s efforts

27. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Should boys be involved in housework?

C. I’m proud I’ve raised a curious son

D. Dependent or independent?

C

Cancer researchers urged people on Wednesday to take more vitamin D to lower risk of cancer, saying st udies showed a clear link. “Our suggestion is for people to increase their intake (吸入,摄入), through diet or a vitamin supplement,” Dr. Cedric Garland said in a telephone interview.

Garland's research team reviewed 63 studies, including several large long-term ones, on the relationship between vitamin D and certain types of cancer worldwide between 1966 and 2004. “There's nothing that has this ability to prevent cancer,” he said, urging governments and public health officials to do more to fortify (增强) foods with vitamin D. Garland is part of a University of California at San Diego Moores Cancer Center team that published its findings this week online in the American Journal of Public Health. Vitamin D is found in milk, as well as in some fortified orange juice, yogurt and cheeses, usually at around 100 international units(IU)a serving. “People might want to consider a vitamin supplement to raise their intake to 1000 IUs per day” Garland said, adding that it was well within the safety guidelines established by the National Academy of Sciences.

The authors said that taking more vitamin D could be especially important for people living in northern areas, which receive less vitamin D from sunshine.

“African Americans, who don't produce as much of the vitamin becaus e of their skin colour, could also benefit significantly from a higher intake,” the authors said.

32. According to the passage, people are advised to take more Vitamin D, because__.

A. it is nutritious

B. it can’t harm people’s health

C. it can lower cancer risk

D. it is not taken enough every day

33.Which of the following can not help people get more Vitamin D?

A. Have some sunshine

B. Have more meat

C. Have more fortified cheese

D. Have a vitamin supplement

34.Who can Garland probably be?

A. A health researcher

B. A doctor

C. A scientist

D. A public health official

35. People from which area should take more Vitamin D according to the passage?

A. Asian people

B. African people

C. American people

D. European people

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。

To be confident

Confidence of success is almost success. Here’s how to believe in yourself.

Remember that everyone struggles with confidence. Some people are good at hiding it, but nearly every person has struggled with his or her self-confidence at one point. 36

Accept compliment politely. When someone compliments you, make eye contact, smile, and say “thank you”. It shows that you’re polite and have a secure sense of self-worth. If you’re still uncomfortable taking compliments, try giving one back after you’ve accepted one. 37

38 That’s a simple and an effective psychological technique to become confident. When you are talking louder you are sending the signal that you are confident, and as you make it as a habit you will feel more confident. But don’t be dominating(专横的).

Look the part. Or, as the saying goes, “Fake it till you make it.” 39 Devote a little time each day to make sure you’re presenting yourself well. Keep your shoulders back, walk with purpose instead of dragging your feet, and sit up straight. Smile and make eye contact. It’s a small change, but it can work wonders on what other people think of you.

Develop your interests. If there’s a sport or hobby you’ve always wanted to be good at, now’s the time! Improving your skills will show that you are talented, and make you confident. Learn a musical instrument or a foreign language; take up an art form like painting----whatever it is that catches your interest. 40 Remember that learning is a process, and you’re in it for the small victories and the relaxing time, not to be the best ever.

A.Make a list.

B.You’re not alone!

C.Talk a little louder.

D.Stop comparing yourself with everyone else.

E.Don’t get discouraged if you’re not immediately awesome.

F.This can help you feel like the score is “even” and you haven’t been too prideful.

G.If you know that you look like a confident person, eventually you’ll start to feel it, too.
