Application Guidelines

D e s c r i p t i o n :

This is a family of multilayer optical films utilizing 3M’s unique reflective polarizer technology. This technology provides a film that is a reflective polarizer, in that it transmits light of one polarization, and reflects the light of the other polarization, which normally would have been absorbed by a conventional polarizer. Due to their far greater reflectivity, they provide greatly increased background brightness for higher perceived contrast and readability. They are intended to be direct replacements for the conventional rear polarizer in monochrome display modules. The film is available in four versions:

Vikuiti RDF-B film for purely reflective applications not using a backlight.Vikuiti TDF film for transflective applications which incorporate a backlight.Vikuiti RDF-C film for colored characters or backgrounds.Vikuiti DBEF-A film for mirror-like characters or background.3Innovation

The film’s basic construction is illustrated below.

All four films are nearly identical except for the dark coating and type of adhesive. The front side of Vikuiti DBEF-A film is mirror-like, while the other three films are a bright diffuse gray color. The backside of Vikuiti RDF-B film is a completely opaque black coating, while the back side of Vikuiti TDF film is a semi-opaque

neutral density dark coating. The back side of Vikuiti RDF-C film and Vikuiti DBEF-A film has no dark coating at all and has a silvery metallic appearance, and is approximately 13 microns thinner than the other two films. All three films have removable protective liners on both sides and a front adhesive layer. Vikuiti DBEF-A film comes only in a 300mm x 350mm sheet, while the other three films are available in 330mm x 550mm mastersheets, and 11 in. x 11 in. notched sample sheets.

These films replace the rear polarizer/reflector or polarizer/transflector of a typical display. It is laminated to the back of the LCD glass module as illustrated below.

These films work differently from conventional absorbing polarizers, and should be aligned 90 degrees away from the angle that a conventional rear polarizer would have been mounted. This would make its transmission axis parallel to the transmission axis of the front polarizer, as illustrated below. Some displays do not have their front and rear polarizers at 90 degrees to each other. But even in this case, whenever Vikuiti RDF/TDF film replaces a conventional rear polarizer, its transmission axis should be 90 degrees away from the angle the conventional rear

polarizer would have used.

Die cutting is the recommended form of converting and will result in the cleanest edges, although shear cutting and laser cutting may also be acceptable. Whatever method used, you should ensure that the part has clean, crisp edges without any raggedness or other damage. These are multilayer films and any abuse of the edges can cause the layers to delaminate.

During converting operations, both the front and rear protective liners should remain on the film.

If laser cutting, be sure to cut with the adhesive side of the film down, and adjust power levels if necessary to insure that the protective liners remain easily peelable.

Keep the area very clean to lessen the likelihood of debris contaminating adhesive surfaces. Maintaining Class 100 Cleanroom conditions is recommended.

Use anti-static measures, such as ionized air blowers, whenever possible to decrease dust attraction to adhesive surfaces.

As always, protect the film, especially the edges, from any undue shock or stress.Wear clean-room gloves if fingerprints are a problem.

Remove liners by tacking near an edge or corner with a piece of aggressive tape and pulling gently. Avoid forcibly pulling with fingers.

Avoid touching the adhesive surfaces by holding the product at the edges. The LCD glass should be spotlessly clean for proper https://www.doczj.com/doc/fd6303888.html,minate with a rubber roller to avoid trapping air bubbles.

Autoclaving is recommended for the removal of lamination defects and to increase the adhesive bond. Autoclave conditions of 50 degrees C at 70 PSI for 30 minutes are suggested.

Annealling is also recommended to improve the adhesive bond. Conditions of 70-80 degrees C for 5 hours are suggested.

If rework is necessary, the film can be removed with a razor blade. Heating with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive may be useful.

Material should be stored in its original packaging laying in a horizontal orientation. Heavy objects should not be piled on top of it to avoid deforming the product. Ambient temperature and humidity should be controlled to 10 – 30 degrees C at 50 – 80% R.H.
