Have you noticed that many of the clothes on the high street look the same these days? So how do young people manage to express their individual (个人的) style? We interviewed some Brits in different parts of the country.

“Young creative people in the UK have always come up with ways to express their individuality through clothes. Punks added zips (拉链) and safety pins (别针), and skaters buy chains (链条) from hardware shops to hang from their trousers. You don’t need money –you need imagination,” said Alexi, art student, Aldershot.

Printing your own T-shirt is the easiest and most common way to customise (定制) clothes. You don’t have to actually make a T-shirt. You can buy a cheap one and add an image (图像) of your choice.

“I used to make customised, multicoloured T-shirts for my friends using fabric (织物) paints. They looked a bit messy but sort of cool. A couple of years ago, my

mate Si mon made one with a picture of Obama dressed as Che Guevara. He still wears it in fact. It looks great,” said John, 25, Cheshire.

Everyone knows that students don’t have a lot of money. That doesn’t have to be a problem if you’ve got a bit of imagination.

“I used to make clothes sometimes when I was a student. Once I found a pair of trousers in a shop that I really liked, but I couldn’t afford them. I did a little sketch (素描) in a notebook, bought some fabric in the same colour and copied the trousers using my mum’s sewing machine (缝纫机). I loved it when people didn’t b elieve I had made them myself,” said Corrine, 31, Dundee.

Buying second-hand or “vintage (复古的)” clothes is a fashion option for many young Brits.

“I like to make or ad apt (改造) my own clothes because I know that they will fit and that they’ll look good. I buy stuff like jackets, trousers and dresses in second-hand shops. You can be sure you will always have something original as well as cheap,” said Helen, 26, Nottingham.

24. According to Alexi, which of the following things best allows young people to express their individual style?

A. Money.

B. Creativity.

C. Taste.

D. Courage.

25. What does John think is a good way to express one’s individuality?

A. Adapting vintage T-shirts.

B. Buying multicolored T-shirts.

C. Printing images on T-shirts.

D. Adding zips and safety pins to T-shirts.

26. What makes Corrine proud of herself?

A. Learning sewing skills from her mother.

B. Making trousers by herself.

C. Being able to afford expensive trousers.

D. Wearing fashionable second-hand trousers.

27. What is the article mainly about?

A. Why young people like to look different.

B. The trend of customizing clothes in the UK.

C. Popular clothes among young Brits.

D. How young Brits show their personality through clothes.

C

I recently gave up driving. I passed my test last year, but I stopped voluntarily (自愿地) when I turned 90. I thought that it was finally the right time.

Needless to say, my family was relieved (解脱的) –they didn’t have to have “that talk” with me. My doctor was relieved too. Next to diagnosing (诊断) an incurable illness, taking away a senior’s driving license is probably one of the hardest things he must do. Since my wife passed away years ago, I made this decision alone, although I’m sure my late wife would have supported me. I knew I couldn’t move as well as I used to, and my eyesight was getting worse. It hurt to turn my head when backing up, and, after long shopping trips, I was exhausted.

As I handed over the keys of the car to my son, I thought of all the cars my wife and I had owned over the years. A car is freedom, independence, and an extension of your personality. Without one, you feel like less of a person.

I have a son who lives close by and we shop together at least once a week. My neighbors also offer me rides, but the idea of being dependent on other people after a lifetime of independence is hard to get used to.

I’ve learned to adapt and change. With my own car, I could go anywher e at a moment’s notice. But now, my horizons have shrunk and I must plan ahead for everything. No more popping out for milk or bread or last-minute afternoon drives.

However, I found a solution to some of those problems. Last year, I decided to buy a nice new four-wheel electric scooter (轻便摩托车). At a top speed of 12 km/h, it takes 20 minutes to get from my house to the grocery store. But now, my route is free from traffic and noise, with trees and greenery (青葱的草木) replacing cars and street signs.

Giving up driving is hard, and some of us never accept the loss. For me, however, it was just the end result of a long and lucky life. Life in the slow lane (车道) turned out to be so much fun – and so much cheaper.

28. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?

A. He decided to stop driving on his own.

B. He developed an incurable illness at the age of 90.

C. He was encouraged to keep driving by his family.

D. He often checked with others before making decisions.

29. How did the author find living without a car at first?

A. He was ready to be dependent on others.

B. He found his life had been limited.

C. He found it healthier because he walked more.

D. He enjoyed the company of his family and friends.

30. What did the author decide to do to balance his life?

A. He took his car back from his son and drove again.

B. He got a new vehicle and adapted to driving slowly.

C. He decided to plan ahead for his everyday life.

D. He made plans to buy a new car for himself.

31. What is the main aim of this article?

A. To describe the typical life of an old man.

B. To persuade readers to live a slower life.

C. To stress the importance of being independent.

D. To show that a change of life may bring positive outcomes.

D

Ea ch of us has a time of the day when we’re at our best. For some, it’s the morning, and for others, the afternoon or evening. These times relate to what scientists call our circadian clock (生物钟). Now, a new study suggests that the relationship between stude nts’ circadian clocks and their study schedules (时间表) can have a big effect on their grades, reported Reuters.

The research, published in Scientific Reports, is the work of two authors, Aaron Schirmer of Chicago’s Northeastern Illinois University and B enjamin Smarr from the University of California. The pair used data (数据) from a university computer system to study the rhythms and activities of 15,000 students at Northeastern Ill inois

University between 2014 and 2016.

They studied the data to see i f there was a connection between the students’ schedules, their natural circadian clocks and their school performance.

The study found that the closer a student’s schedule and their circadian clock, the better their grades were. But if students’ clocks were out of sync (不一致) with the rest of their lives, their performance was likely to suffer.

According to Schirmer and Smarr, those students who suffered from a mismatch underwent a kind of “social jet lag (时差)”. For example, some students performed best at night and therefore chose to study in the evening. But if those students had an early morning class, they often felt tired from late night studying and didn’t get the most out of the class. They might then go on to get a lower grade for exams and coursework.

All students in the study suffered some degree of social jet lag, but late-night studiers suffered the most.

The authors say mismatches between a student’s schedu le and circadian clock can have a “detrimental effect”, and not just in ter ms of academic performance, reported Science Daily. Social jet lag can also be bad for students’ health.

The authors don’t claim that their study proves anything, but they do say that it provides food for thought for school administrators (管理者), who might like to think about special ways to help students who suffer on account of their schedules. And according to Reuters, the findings could also help everyone to “be aware, and hopefully take advantage, of their own biological (生物的) rh ythms to lead a healthy life.”

Choose the best answer:

32. What did the new study find?

A. Most students’ schedules don’t match their circadian clocks.

B. Students who study in the evening have the lowest grades.

C. Students’ circadian clocks have little influ ence on their grades.

D. Studying according to one’s circadian clocks improves one’s grades.

33. What’s Paragraph 5 mainly about?

A. Some possible problems with the study.

B. An explanation of the study’s results.

C. Some ways to improve the study.

D. The importance of the study.

34. The underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 7 probably means ______.

A. beneficial

B. harmful

C. huge

D. lasting

35. How could the study’s findings be considered helpful?

A. They provide support for later school starting times.

B. They could help stu dents improve their grades in a short time.

C. They could help school administrators improve their schedules.

D. They teach students how to change their biological rhythms.
