阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Massachusetts today looks nothing like it did when the first English settlers arrived. Back in the 17th century, forest blanketed the land. Today, roads and towns cover much of the area. But the past is not dead and gone. Just an hour’s drive from Boston lies Plymouth Plantation.

There you’ll experience the 17th century life from the days of the Pilgrims (清教徒). You can look in the Pilgrims’ homes, watch the way they cook, and ask them about their daily lives. You can even help them build houses or work in the fields.

When you arrive at Plymouth, you are greeted with “How do you fare?” instead of “How are you?” In this living history plantation, actors portray (展现) real people of 17th century in Plymouth. Each actor has taken the identity of someone from that period.

All the actors speak the language of Shakespeare. They’re happy to talk about the hardships of their lives or just share the gossip of the day. But don’t try to discuss modern topics. They won’t understand what you are talking about!

In fall, you can enjoy a harvest dinner very similar to the First Thanksgiving. You’ll dine with your hands like Pilgrims. You’ll find no pepper on the table. This expensive spice was used only sparingly (节俭地) in the cooking. You’ll find no last-course “dessert”, either. At that time, people ate sweet dishes right along with the meal.

Cranberries were on the menu then and still are today. A short distance from Plymouth, you can visit Cranberry World. At this unique museum, you’ll see how cranberries are harvested and can taste different cranberry products.

Of course, the First Thanksgiving included not only the Pilgrims, but also their Wampanoag guests. If you want to find out something about the Wampanoag, explore the recreated Wampanoag Homesite. It is just a short walk from Plymouth. Step into the Native American home and enter a different world. Native Americans dressed in 17th century. Wampanoag outfits (服装) describe how their people lived 400 years ago. Outside, you can help make a traditional boat or learn about native plant remedies.

Much in Massachusetts has changed since the 17th century. But in Plymouth, the past lives on.

36. What do you know about Plymouth Plantation?

A. It is a cranberry plantation in Plymouth.

B. It is where some old Pilgrims are still living.

C.It presents the Pilgrims’ life in the 1600s.

D. It is a plantation dating back to the 1700s.

37. What did the English settlers greet each other in the 17th century?

A. How do you fare?

B. How are you?

C. Hi, nice to meet you.

D. How do you do?

38. what can tourists do in Cranberry World?

A. Harvest cranberries by yourself.

B. Taste various cranberry products.

C. Learn how to grow cranberries.

D. Visit an old history museum.

39. The purpose of the rebuilt Wampanoag Homesite is ________.

A. to protect Native Americans, the Wampanoag

B. to attract more tourists to stay in Plymouth

C. to show how the Wampanoag helped the Pilgrims

D. to keep the 17th century Native Americans’ life alive

40. Which is the best title for the text?

A. An Interesting Journey to Plymouth

B. The Life of the Pilgrims

C. A Journey to Plymouth’s Past

D. Life in the 17th Century

Washington teacher Tammie Schrader is very enthusiastic about computer games in education. She thinks they can be used to teach programming skills which will help students to learn in middle school. Canadian teacher Justin Holladay wrote a few simple games to help his students practice math skills. When the games became popular, he started his own company to create more of them. And the University of Washington’s Zoran Popovic got more than 4,000 Washington students to master linear equations (线性方程) this spring by playing a computer game for just a few hours.

The growing availability of inexpensive computers and a new generation of young teachers who grew up playing on computers have inspired interests in games for serious purposes.

“Six or seven years ago, selling games to schools was brutal(唐突的),”said David Martz of Muzzy Lane Software, a Boston, US company that produces games for publishers such as McGraw-Hill. “Now,”he said, “schools are interested in the promise of games.”Software and education companies have tried for many years to combine youngsters’passion for computer games with educational progress, without much success. Zoran Popovic thinks the first efforts to combine games with education fell flat because they were created by commercial companies. These companies were more interested in selling products than seeing students master a skill.

Teachers say there are some pretty good games in the marketplace now. Holladay, a math teacher from Alberta, Canada, began moving paper-based math games to the ipad, building games that allowed students to compete with each other and give him instant feedback on their progress. The games reinforced (加强) the lessons he was teaching, and his students had fun playing. He said, “They were a lot more engaged.”

We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this spot in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.

“Look down, Elsa,” Father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw the criss-cross(十字形) of the twisting, turning streets leading to the square. “See, my dear.” Father said gently, “There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can’t get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another.”

Now I understand why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the awful lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.

When I turned to Father for help, he would not interfere (干涉). Instead, he brought

me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.

At school the next day, I secretly poured my luncheon soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked our cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She swallowed one spoonful and sputtered, “The cook must have gone mad!”Quickly I told what I had done, and Mother stated firmly that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!

In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson Father taught me. I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible means to reach my goal. Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born.

Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.

The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.

You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem (自尊). Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.

You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for whatever happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.

Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we consciously choose to accept and believe. Thoughts and beliefs cause everything. Our attitudes and actions are a result of habits ingrained in us over a period of time. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success depends upon our level of confidence. We are responsible for either reinforcing(强化) good habits or kicking bad habits and consciously replacing them with consistently practiced good habits.

If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing (培育) the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.

In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

51. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they ________.

A. are ready to change their minds

B. are easily affected by windy weather

C. don’t have the power to face their fate

D. can’t exercise control over themselves

52. Losers would think that ________.

A. success is the result of hard work

B. working hard will lead to success

C. their failure is only because of bad luck

D. they don’t make efforts to succeed

53. It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ________.

A. whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes

B. developing confidence is the key to future success

C. thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind

D. setting our expectations is essential before taking action

54. The last paragraph serves as ________.

A. the proof of the writer’s points

B. the conclusion of the argument

C. an introduction to another topic

D. a comparison between two views

55. Which is the best title for the text?

A. Success Is a Choice

B. The Secrets of Success

C. Develop Our Confidence

D. How to Achieve Success

第II卷(满分35分)

第一节:阅读表达(共5个小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

1.Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers in the ditches(路沟) along the highway I travel daily to work.

2. There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I’ve noticed that it blooms only in the morning hours, for the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for approximately two weeks, I see those beautiful flowers.

3. This spring, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I’ve often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the ditches would look great in that bed alongside other wildflowers. Every day I drove past the flowers thinking, “I’ll stop on my way home and dig them.”“Gee, I don’t want to get my good clothes dirty…” Whatever the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a folding shovel (铲子) one year for my trunk to be used for that expressed purpose.

4.One day on my way home from work, I was saddened to see that the highway department had moved the ditches and the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, “Way to go, you waited too long. You should have done it when you first saw them blooming this spring.”

5. A week ago we were shocked to know that my oldest sister-in-law has a terminal brain tumor (脑瘤晚期). She is 20 years older than my husband and unfortunately, because

of age and distance, we haven’t been as close as we all would have liked.

6.I couldn’t help but see the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the relationship between my husband’s sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant some wonderful memories that will bloom every year for us.

7. And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I’ll stop and transplant them to my wildflower garden.

56. What did the author see every morning this spring? (No more than 8 words)

57. Why didn’t the author carry the flowers home at last? (No more than 12 words)

Dear Jack,

How are you doing recently? I miss you very much. Now I’m so excited that I can’t wait to share with you an unforgettable experience.

Last Friday, our school held a book sale, aimed to raise some money to help those in need. During the course of the after-class activity, we gathered on the playground to sell books, which were collected ahead of time. Luckily, a great many students took an active part in this program and we got a large amount of money.

I believe our generous help is sure to have a good effect on children in need, especially those in the mountainous areas or poverty-stricken districts. Through our efforts, we can not only share what we have with them, but also make their life more colorful. We show our love, which makes our world go round.

Best wishes to you!

Study has found that the manner (25)______ ______ a mother interacts with her friends makes a role model for an adolescent child when building (26)______ his/her own peer friendships. Unfortunately, teens often pick up on the negative elements in a relationship, such as conflict and opposition, and then copy these attitudes into their own relationships。 The new study investigated a previously understudied association —how a parent’s friendships influence the emotional well-being of their adolescent children. For the study, researchers studied the development of friendships and (27)______ peer relationships during adolescence and their impact on psychological adjustment. They found that adolescents (28)______imitate the negative characteristics of their mothers’ relationships in their own peer-to-peer friendships. The finding shows that mothers (29)______(serve) as role models for their adolescents during formative years.
