In many big cities there are people who cannot get work. Sometimes they do not want to work, but sometimes there isn’t any work for them to do.

Some of these people beg (乞讨) for money. Some of them sell boxes of matches or cheap pens, and some of them sell flowers.

Andrew Chen never gave money to beggars.“People should work for their money.”he believed. He also believed there was work for everyone, which was not true.

One day when he was waiting for a bus, a beggar came up and asked him for money. The beggar was an old woman wearing very old an dirty clothes. She had no shoes and she was selling some sweet-smelling flowers.

“Give an old woman ten dollars, Sir,” she said to Andrew.“I haven’t had a meal for three days.”

“I’m not giving you ten dollars.”An drew said.

“What about five dollars, then, mister?”the old woman said.“That’ll buy me a couple of pieces of bread.”

“No.”Andrew said.

“Then what about one dollar?”the old woman said. “I can buy an orange for one dollar.”

Every town in the United States has a post office.

Some are very small, and you may also find them in the corner of a shop. Others are larger buildings. They are open from Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings. From Monday to Friday they are usually open from 8:30 to 4:30.

If you know how much the postage (邮资) is for your letter, you can buy stamps at any window. In some post offices you can buy stamps from machines. Stamps are sold at many different prices, from one cent (美分) to several dollars. If you are not sure how much postage is for your letter, you may ask the man or the woman in the post office for help. He or she will give you the stamp you need. If you are sending your letter far away, you should use an airmail envelope(航空信封). Remember that postage will be more expensive for a letter to be sent outside the country.

At a post office you can also buy postcards. A postcard is cheaper than a letter. Usually the price of postage for a postcard is about half that of a letter. The postcards that you buy at a post office do not have pictures. And they are not to be sent outside the country.

Sendaing letters is an easy and cheap way to keep in touch with people in many different countries.

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子)or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way. Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning. 1. A friend of the writer’s drew the horses ____. A. very well B. in the way of western rule C. in the way of his own rule D. all of the above 2. The writer was surprised because ____. A. the artist began to draw at the head of the horse B. the artist began to draw at the tail of the horse C. the artist made his own rule D. the artist did not follow other people’s rule 3. You are not yet experienced because ____. A. you don’t know where to begin B. you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail

A A farmer had a brother in town who was a gardener, and his brother had a garden full of the finest fruit trees. So his skill and his beautiful trees were famous everywhere. One day the farmer went into the town to visit his brother, and was surprised at the trees that grew quite well. "Look, my brother," said the gardener. "I will give you an apple tree, the best from my garden, and you, and your children, and your children's children will enjoy it." Then the gardener called his workmen and ordered them to take up the tree and carry it to his brother's farm. They did so, and the next morning the farmer began to wonder where he should plant it. "If I plant it on the hill," he said to himself, "the wind might catch it and shake down the delicious fruit before it is ripe. If I plant it close to the road, passersby will see it and take away the apples--but if I plant it too near the door of my house, my children may pick the fruit." So, after he had thought the matter over, he planted the tree behind his barn (谷仓). Time passed, but the tree had no fruit the first year, nor the second-then the farmer called his brother. When the gardener came, the farmer said angrily, "You have cheated me, and given me a useless tree instead of a fruitful one. This is the third year and still it brings out nothing but leaves! Every morning my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every evening my mother looks through (浏览)magazines at home. And every night, I look at the posters (海报) with photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we imagine life without paper or printing? About 2, 000 years ago, paper was invented in China. Then people learned to write words on paper to make a book. But in those days, they could only write books by hand. So, books were expensive and rare (珍贵的)at that time. And because there weren't many books, few people learned to read. Then printing was invented in China and it developed greatly at the beginning of the 11th century. Then people could print books quickly and cheaply (便宜地). As a result, more people learned to read. After that, knowledge and ideas spread quickly. Today with the help of the Internet we can connect and share information quickly. We can also read newspapers and magazines online.

抓住四个"W"和一个"H",就是边读边用铅笔做些标记,把What (事件),When (时间),Where(地点),Why(原因),How(经过)划出来。

a读/? /:map, man, bad; a读/ei/: cake, table, face; i读/i/: big, pig, sit; i读/ai/: bike, ride, line。 如ea,ee,ie 读/i:/ : please,seat;jeep,deep;piece,field; ir 读/ /:first, girl; sh 读 / /:English, ship 。 2.同义词、反义词对比记忆单词 big—large—old (年龄); close—open; put on—take off 3. 按前缀、后缀记忆单词 happy—unhappy like—dislike work—worker visit—visitor 5. 词组联想记忆词汇 give back, get back, come back, be back, take back, have back 二、抓好用词这一关 学生在书面表达中,经常用词不当,如 a hard wind 代替了 a strong wind;又如有的学生不理解surprising和surprised之间的区别,往往会颠倒使用;还有一些介词、副词使用不当,如“在阳光下”,学生往往会用under the sun而不用in the sun,“我非常喜欢英语”,会写成I very like English.
