On Easter Day, 1722, Dutch explorers(探索者)landed on Easter Island. It was the first time Easter Islanders met people from the outside world. The strangers were about to

discover something very strange themselves —that they were on an island with hundreds of huge stone statues (雕像). The Dutch explorers wondered where the Islanders had come from and why and how they had built the statues. Now science is putting together the story. The first people to arrive on the island came there around 700 A.D.. The society that developed there was based on fishing and farming to feed a population, which grew to 12,000. Its success showed itself in a way that has become the island’s t rademark (标记): hundreds of huge stone figures —the moai.None of the moai was standing when scientists first arrived. People put them back up later; but how had a Stone Age society ever made, moved and set them up there in the first place? And why? There are nearly 900 moai on Easter Island, and while the questions about them remain unanswered, no one doubts the years of effort that must have gone into making them. The downfall of the Easter Islanders came from across the ocean. After 1722, it became popular for explorers to visit Easter Island, bringing diseases. The final blow (打击) came in 1862, when slave traders came from Peru and took away 1,500 people, one-third of the population.

The other day I heard a few local musicians talking: "I hate all the pianos in this town and I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They cannot even understand rhythm (韵律).""Nobody wants to pay musicians anything. I’m sick of all the people who want you to play without paying you."...One younger musician said, "There are a couple of clubs who want me to play for a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also planning to join in several summer festivals this year." I really liked what the younger musician said so I made friends with him. Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative (消极的), they’re all rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who are always complaining or blaming (责备) others, it is p ossible that you will start doing the same as well. If you spend lots of time with people who don’t support your dreams, it is time to take a look at the people you call "friends". There is an easy exercise you can try. Make a list of the people who you often stay with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard. The choice is always yours to make. Of course, this exercise is entirely different from making friends only for the good of oneself. We really should try to help and spend time with those who are working towards a goal or dream.

51. The musicians’ conversation at the beginning is to show that ______.

A. musicians’ living conditions are not good

B. people in that town have poor taste in music

C. different people have different attitudes

D. young people are more likely to succeed

52. The underlined part "they’re rubbing off on you" in Paragraph 6 means ______.

A. they’ll push you ahead

B. they’ll have an influence on you

C. they’ll keep you from moving on

D. they’ll help you realize your dreams

53. Why did the author want to make friends with the younger musician?

A. He is more active than the others.

B. He can earn more than the others.

C. He has more things to do than the others.

D. His attitude is more positive than the others.

54. By doing the exercise mentioned in Paragraph 7, you can ______.

A. make the right kind of friends

B. improve your ability to make friends

C. develop a better relationship with your friends

D. make some new friends with the same interests as you

55. We can get the following information from the passage EXCEPT ______.

A. the younger musician is a positive person and would be a good friend

B. one will start complaining if one spends too much time with negative people

C. the exercise can help you keep close to really helpful friends

D. one should avoid making friends with people who have lots of difficulties

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

There are good reasons to cherish (珍爱) our friend-ships. "A well-established friendship carries a long history of experience and interaction(相互影响) that defines who we are and keeps us connected," says Donald Pannen, executive officer of the Western Psychological Association. "It is a heritage(传统)we should protect." However, says Brant R. Burleson, professor of communication at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., "the better friends you have, the more likely it is that you’ll face conflicts (冲突)."At last, the result can be what you don’t want —an end to the relationship. Experts agree that one of the worst things you can do when you’re ups et is to start a fight. "We don’t think clearly when we’re arguing,"says Michael Lang, a professional from Pittsburgh. Instead, says Lang, "What’s going on? This doesn’t make sense." Making friends can sometimes seem easy, says Yager. The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that affect all relationships. Her suggestion is to consider friendship as an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and develop. The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended.

读写任务One possible version:

How to Mend a Broken Friendship?

We know that making friends is not as easy as it seems. Sometimes friendships end because of small conflicts; however, troubled friendship can also be mended.

Everyone needs friendship. No one can sail the ocean of life alone. Even between good friends, conflicts still occur. How can we mend broken friendships? Here are my suggestions. Apologize when you’re wrong. It is common for people to make mistakes; even th e best people in the world make mistakes. When you apologize, give your friend the opportunity to admit his or her mistakes. What’s more, learn to think about things from your friend’s point of view. By doing so, you can gain a better understanding of your friend. Tolerance is the key to maintaining good friendships. We should never forget our old friends and should try to keep making new friends.

In short, we should cherish our friendship, and help our friends whenever they are in trouble.

M: Hello, this is Black. What can I do for you?

W: Er ... Mr. Black, this is Jenny. I’m phoning about your advertisement for a salesperson.

M: How old are you, Jenny?

W: Twenty-two, sir.

M: Hm, are you still at school?

W: Yes, I’m at the University o f California. But I can spare time for a part-time job.

M: Do you have any working experience during the holidays, or anything like that? I mean, have you worked as a salesperson before?

W: Well, I worked at the Wal-Mart on West Street during the Christmas holidays.

M: I see. And ... do you think you’re a good saleswoman?

W: Yes. I have a lot of confidence, because I was once praised for my selling ability.

M: OK, Jenny, could you come here for an interview, say, at 4:30 on Thursday?

W: Yes, sir. Where are you located?

M: We’re on the 10th floor of the Stone Building on Plaza Street. Bring your ID card and a record of your grades at school.

W: Is this your dog? It’s so lovely!

M: Yeah, she’s my good companion. We’re always together.

W: Dogs have been our best friends for thousands of years. Most people will agree that dogs make great companions, I believe.

M: Absolutely! Whatever happens, she’s there for me.

W: I’m green with envy. She’s so beautiful.

M: I’ve been training her for a long time. At first she has a lot of trouble, but now she behaves beautifully, and I’m very satisfied.

W: No wonder! The training seems to have been quite effective.

M: It took me a lot of time and energy, but it was worthwhile.

W: How much time do you spend with her?

M: Dogs like to play, so I walk and play with her every day.

W: So maybe I’ll see you here tomorrow.

M: Probably. Bye for now.

W: See you tomorrow.

After studying them for ten years, scientists in Canada say big ocean fish have almost disappeared since the start of industrial fishing in the 1950s. To do the study they gathered records from fishing companies and governments around the world. The scientists say the common method called long-line fishing is especially damaging to populations of large fish. This method involves having many fishing lines connected to one boat. These wires can be nearly a hundred kilometers long. They hold thousands of sharp metal hooks to catch fish. Long-line fishing is especially common in the Japanese fishing industry. Records showed that Japanese boats used to catch about ten fish with every one hundred hooks. The study says long-line fishing boats now might catch one tenth as many. The study has found that industrial fishing destroys groups of fish much faster than the fishing methods of the past. It suggests that whole populations may disappear almost completely from new fishing areas within ten to fifteen years.

M: Mary, you ought to try talking with people online in a "Chat Room".

W: I have no desire to talk with strangers on the Internet.

M: But since they’re strangers, you can talk with them about anything. You can complain to them about anything t hat’s making you unhappy. You can express your feelings. Also, you’ll get to talk to people you wouldn’t usually talk to.

W: But I want a personal talk with another person.

M: You can do that. A personal chat box lets two people talk alone. You can talk about whatever you want, and no one will disturb you.

W: Well, maybe I’ll just watch you do it if you don’t mind.

M: Fine. But first you should know some Internet words. For example, "A/S/L" means "Age / Sex / Location". And if you read "Give him the boot", it means that person wants to kick someone out of the chat room.

W: There seems to be a lot of things to learn.

M: Of course. But once you learn them, the Internet is yours. If you really want to, let’s get to the Internet cafe early, because there’s alwa ys a long wait after 8 p.m.

W: OK. Let’s say 7 p.m.

Text6

M: In central New York State, there are five lakes that look like fingers on a map. Their names come from an American-Indian language: Seneca, Cayuga, Keuka, Canandaigua and Skaneateles. These are the five major Finger Lakes. Cayuga Lake is the longest, but Seneca Lake the deepest, at almost two hundred meters. Most of the lakes contain cold-water fish. The Finger Lakes area not only is home to industry and large cities, but also has many farms, and a large number of wine producers.

The first people to live in the area were the Indians. They believed that the Great Spirit had formed the lakes. The Great Spirit was closely linked with nature. But science tells us that a large body of ice had moved across the land. The last glacier covered large areas of what is now the northeastern United States about twenty thousand years ago. The glacier moved south, then north again, and in doing so moved through many river valleys, making them deeper and wider than they were before. When the ice started melting, and moving north, the glacier left huge amounts of soil and rocks in which scientists call the Valley Heads. The Valley Heads prevented former rivers from flowing south the way they had before, and left the valleys filled with water. This is how scientists say the Finger Lakes came to be.

There are 30 boys in this house and Anne Belles is their mom. Belles has wanted to help children since she was a kid. “I was intrigued by the movie Oliver! in the 1960s, a musical based on the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. I told my mom, …That?s what I want to do. …” Anne?s boys are from 3 to 25 years old. All of them are challenged in some way. “They each have special needs — physically, mentally (精神上), or at school,” says Belles. Every day, a small army of childcare workers, nurses, and volunteers comes in to help cook and clean, wash 30 loads of laundry a day, and take care of health needs. To find out how much such a large family costs, we followed Jim Silcock to the grocery store. He spent $880 on food for one week. Every month they spend $2,000 to run five cars, $15,000 for the fourteen paid helpers, and more than $10,000 on medical costs. The family receives $26,000 a month from the state government, and makes some money from a family business. All the money is spent on the children; having new clothes and fancy cars isn?t important to Belles. How do the kids feel? 17-year-old Anthony says, “The family is there whenever I need something ... I feel like I am loved.” “Everything I?m doing now is what I wanted to happen in my life,” says Anne Belles. “So, no regrets; this is perfect. I couldn?t ask for it to be better — maybe a bigger house, you know, would be nice.” 21. The underlined word “intrigued” in the first paragraph means “_____”.

A On a dark winter day in Russia in 1896, Sergei Prokofiev sat by a piano next to his mother. She was helping him compose (作曲) his first piece of music. Sergei was only five years old. He had overheard his parents discussing a terrible famine (饥荒) in India. The picture Sergei had of those hungry people in his mind caused him to write a story, in the form of musical notes. Sergei could not read music, so he picked out a tune on the piano keys, and his mother recorded the notes. Sergei titled it “Indian Gallop.” Sergei's mother began giving him piano lessons for 20 minutes a day, and his ability grew quickly. She had a great love for music, too, and Sergei often lay awake in bed at night and listened to her play the piano. Sergei's parents found a famous music teacher for him. The teacher shouted at Sergei when he didn't practice reading and playing music. Sergei later wrote, “I wanted to compose great musical plays, and instead I was given all sorts of boring tasks.” Yet he persisted with his studies and grew up to be a great composer. In 1936 a children's theater asked Sergei to write music that would teach children about different instruments. He was happy and wrote the piece in a week, calling it Peter and the Wolf. Sergei's Peter and the Wolf was enjoyed by children as well as adults. The first time Sergei played the piece on the piano, the children listening to it loved it so much that they made him play the ending three extra times. He was excited. Today Sergei Prokofiev is remembered not only for his contributions (贡献) to classical music, but also for his sense of fun. 21. When he was five, Sergei _____. A. could read music

A.congratulate B.celebrate C.win D.defend 答案:B celebrate“庆祝”,其宾语常常是物而不是人。而congratulate“庆贺”的表达是congratulate sb on sth/doing sth; win“赢得”,其宾语常是a game/match/victory等;defend“保卫/护”。 3.He wrote the poem________his wife who offered her life in defense of the country. A.thanks to B.in place of C.in memory of D.because of 答案:C句意:他写这首诗是为了纪念因卫国而献出生命的妻子。in memory of“纪念……”,为固定搭配。thanks to“多亏”;in place of“代替”;because of是一个介词短语,表示“因为”。A、B、D三项不符合句意。 4.If anything________to the patient, let me know at once, please. A.happens B.will happen C.takes place D.will take place 答案:A在条件状语从句中,用一般现在时代替一般将来时,故排除B、D两项;happen 表示偶然发生,take place强调发生的事情是有计划或有安排的。 5.It's wrong for us to play tricks________our parents.

A Insects (昆虫) are a very healthy food. They have almost as much protein (蛋白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals. Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat! Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food. But insects will not replace (替代) animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries would have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable. Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named “The Eat-A-B ug Cookbook”, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits (好处) of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do. 21. Eating insects _____. A. is not healthy B. makes people put on fat
