三、阅读理解(共20个小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分50分)

阅读下列短文, 从所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

A

There are many idioms in English. An idiom is a phrase that we can’t understand from the meaning of each word. The following are some of them.

As the crow flies

When a bird flies from place to place, it takes the most direct route. But when people drive, they have to follow roads and often go farther. When people give a distance “as the crow flies”, they mean the shortest distance between the two points, not the distance you would have to travel by following roads.

As Dan and his mum drove along the river, they could see the beach on the opposite side, Dan asked “How far is it to the beach?”

“It’s only about a quarter of a mile as the crow flies” his mother said.

Blow hot and cold

In one of Aesop’s Fables, a man blow on his fingers to warm them up and then blow on his soup to cool it down. In both cases, the man is opening his mouth, but what comes out is different. If a person says one thing and later says the opposite, we say that the person is blowing hot and cold.

“Is Felicia going to try out for the soccer team this year?” Stacy asked.

“I don’t know,” Tricia replied. “ Last week she was saying yes,but this week she’s saying no. She’s really blowing hot and cold.”

Break the ice

Nowadays people use the phrase to refer to ending an awkward silence by beginning a conversation.

It was the first day of summer camp. The four girls began to make their beds in silence. None of the girls knew each other, and no one knew what to say. Finally, one of them broke the ice by saying “ Hey, where’s everybody from?”

Bury the hatchet

In native American culture, when two nations agreed to end their war, they buried the hatchet. So to bury the hatchet is to make peace with someone else.

Colin could not excuse his sister for breaking his tennis racket. Finally, his sister said, “Colin, can’t we bury the hatchet?”

A couple from Miami, Bill and Simone Butler, spent sixty-six days in a life-raft (救生艇) in the seas of Central America after their boat sank.

Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales(鲸鱼). “They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water.

For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water — two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw (生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish

until something very strange happened. Some sharks(鲨鱼) came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface. I caught them with my hands.”

About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea their life-raft was beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up. Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut highway crashes.

Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.

Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan's success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other

patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.

Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (danger) are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.

Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.

Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

46. The passage mainly discusses ____________.

A. a new way of highway speed control

B. a new method of training drive

C.a new pattern for painting highways

D. a new type of optical illusion

47.On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that ____________.

B. it will have a longer effect on drivers

C. can cut road accidents in half

Sherlock Holmes is considered by many people as the greatest detective in fictional literature. He is, in fact, more famous than his own creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the popular series of stories, Holmes is described as “tall and lean, pope-smoking, always in his cape and speaks in a splendid manner”. Doyle gave Holmes’ address as 221-B Baker Street, London, and to this day some visitors to London still go to Baker Street to search for 221-B. Of course, there never was really any such address. Holmes’ flat was supposed to be shared by the lovable, but sometimes clumsy Doctor Watson who went around with Holmes trying to solve crimes before Holmes did. Poor Dr Watson lost out to Holmes every time.

Doyle gave Holmes a masterly skill of deduction---the ability to come up with interesting conclusion from the simplest clues found at the scene of a crime. Doyle said that the description of Holmes was modeled on one of his lecturers at Edinburgh University where he studied medicine. That man was Dr Joseph Bell. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet published in 1887. Holmes was so loved by all that when his author killed him off in one of his stories, readers wrote in anger to complain. They refused to allow Holmes to die! Holmes was brought back to “life” and appeared in further stories.

The stories of Sherlock Holmes have been reprinted many times ever since then. Today we can watch Holmes at work on cinema and television screens as well as on stage.

No matter what you do in a company, it’s important for you to get along well with your boss. Your relationship with your boss is probably the most important one you have at work. Why? Having a healthy relationship with your boss usually means you’re more satisfied with the work you do and have less stress. Your boss can be a key supporter in helping you achieve your long-term goals. He or she knows your company’s goals and knows what the company looks for in future managers and leaders. Here are some tips to keep the relationship healthy.

Do your best. Try to live up to the performance expectations set for your job. In doing your best, you’ll gain greater satisfaction from your work, earn the trust of your boss and help the organization achieve its goals.

Don’t try to hide problems. Can you find the problem when you meet the problem? If you can’t and the problem becomes serious, let your boss know as soon as possible. Offer solutions and ask for additional advice. Don’t let your boss find out about the problem from someone else.

Manage your anger. Blowing up in front of your boss solves nothing, but suggests clearly that you can’t control your emotions. This doesn’t mean you have to sit and keep silent when you’re angry.
