Ｗith technology de*eloping at a rocket speed, the black mirror is e*erywhere, on the screens of our cellphones, our computers and our tele*isions. Ｉn our daily life, we are always facing black mirrors. Ｈowe*er, we can hardly see oursel*es in it. Ｐerhaps sometimes we can, but only as a colourless face. Ｔechnology has brought great con*enience of communication for information but at the same time, it has webbed our thought.
Ｓe*eral years ago, an article named “Ｉs Ｇoogle making us stupid”got quite popular on the Ｉnternet. Ａt that time, Ｉ thought it was just alarmism but now Ｉ find it much worse because technology is not just making us stupid but also weakening our independent thought. Ａbout half year ago, Ｉ was in*ited to judge a debate competition. Ｗhen Ｉ arri*ed at the competition room, Ｉ noticed it was an old and classic topic, so Ｉ was expecting those players to gi*e me some new and special ideas. Ｕnfortunately, when the game continued, Ｉ found all the *iewpoints and examples they used were totally the same as the pre*ious competition. Ｔhe only fun during the competition was to predict what they would say. Ａs far as Ｉ was concerned, they were not making a debate but replaying a *ideo. Ｏb*iously, they just spoke for the black mirror.
Ｄebate was born as an area that we use our own thought to defend our opinion. Ｈowe*er due to high technology, all these "Ｍy opinion
is" in the competition are actually "Ｔhe opinion Ｉ ha*e found is". Ｔhat is , really, a tragedy because all human dignity lies in thought which has been weakened by con*enient technology.
Ｔruth to be told, debate is not the only example. Ｉn e*ery field, we can get whate*er information or opinions we want from the almighty black mirror. Ａs a consequence, how to restructure human thought has become not only important but also necessary in today's technologically ad*anced world. Ａnd the answer is humanism which stands for human independent special mind. Ｊust as humanism freed people's thought from the force of religion in the Ｒenaissance, Ｉ'm waiting in the hope that it can rescue the ideology trapped in high technology. Ｈumanism is a Ｌodestar guiding us to the era that anyone can form their own opinion about anything but not just speak the words from the Ｉnternet.
Ｌadies and gentlemen, Ｉ'm not an anti-technologist but Ｉdo care about those disad*antages that technology brings to our present life. Ｗith the laundry machine, we don't know how to hand wash clothes clean. Ｗith electronic address books, we can e*en hardly remember our girlfriends or boyfriends' phone numbers. Ａnd now with a con*enient way to get opinion, we seldom think with our own mind. Ｉf so, human is only a reed, the feeblest thing in nature. Ｉ want you to tell me something. Ｗhat’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the word faith, a sacred and heart-warming word that’s supposed to remind you of all the beauties and goodness of life, the key that used to keep us going when confronted
with all sorts of hardships and obstacles. Ｈowe*er, when Ｉ hear the word faith, the thing it reminds me of is so remote and intangible. Ｉn this rich and peaceful era, there aren’t as many disasters or wars, especially for us young people whose li*es are much easier and wealthier than our fathers’. Ｓo is faith gradually losing its significance in the human world nowadays?
Ｌike many of others, Ｉ used to think of faith as of no importance at all, and Ｉ deemed myself as a faithless person. Ｉ thought Ｉ can li*e my life perfectly fine without intentionally grasping something as my faith. Ｕntil one day Ｉ met an Ａmerican Ｃhristian named Ｊohn, who later became a *ery good friend of mine. Ｊohn is an extremely faithful Ｃhristian, and he thinks of Ｊesus Ｃhrist as his lord. Ｈe, as a pastor, tried to con*ert me into a Ｃhristian when we first met. Ｓo he lectured me with his extensi*e knowledge of history and philosophy e*ery time we hung out. Ｉn spite of his amazingly detailed desc ription of the history of Ｊesus, what really got me intrigued is not the story he told, instead, is Ｊohn himself as probably the first and most faithful person Ｉ’*e met in my entire life. Ｉ can feel the sparks in his eyes when he talks about biblical things, and Ｉ am so touched by the integrity of him when he says:”Ｊesus Ｃhrist is the ultimate pursuit of my life” without any hesitation or doubt.
Ｔhe more we got along, the more Ｉ became jealous of him, because he always seems to be joyful and optimistic. Ｗhen Ｉ ask him how he manages it, he said:”Ｉ’*e had bad days too, but Ｉ also know that Ｇod is with me. Ｓo Ｉ know that it’ll all be okay.”Ｓuddenly it occurred to me how lucky it is to ha*e something you can completely put your trust into, something that will bring you strength when your mind is weak, something that reminds you “ it’s not so bad” when you’re filled with sorrow, something that gi*es your existence
significance and bring it up to a higher le*el. Ｓo Ｉ was literally con*erted, not into a Ｃhristian, not into someone faithful either, but into someone who wants to be as faithful at least.
Ｔhat was the first time Ｉ am exposed to the power of faith. Ｔo put it simple, your life is complete only if you ha*e faith. Ｙou must find something important and significant in your life, your purpose, your pursuit, whate*er you call it. Ｉ’m not saying faith must relate to religion or Ｇod. Ｉt could be anything. Ｉt could be your career goal, your children, your lo*er, fellowship, or a certain kind of life style, anything, as long as you dare to trust your life in it with your heart of hearts.
Ｎow Ｉ’m still faithless. Ｉ ha*en’t become a Ｃhristian or find what matters to me most yet. Ｂut what Ｊohn ga*e me is whole new perspecti*e to see life. Ｓo Ｉ’ll stri*e to really feel and touch the beauty in life and won’t take it for granted. Ａnd that’s also what Ｉ encourage all of us to do. Ｈe is widely known as a moti*ational speaker, gi*ing talks worldwide on life with a disability, hope, and finding meaning in life.
Ｈe was bullied at school, Ｖujicic grew depressed and by the age of 8, contemplated suicide. Ａt age 10, he tried to drown himself in 4 inches of water, but did not go through with it out of lo*e for his parents. Ａfter praying to grow arms and legs, Ｖujicic e*entually realized that his accomplishments could inspire others – and became grateful for his life. Ａ key turning point came when his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a se*ere disability. Ｖujicic realized he wasn't unique in his struggles and began to embrace and transcend his disability.
Ｔhis man, the soldier of life, came to my hometown 2 months ago.
Ｉ got to listen to him, and talk to him, face to face. Ｉ could ne*er forget the look in his face when he said “when Ｉ was young, Ｉ always feel cold, and dark. Ｍy first dream was to grow arms and legs, but there is no future for me at all. ”Ａnd now, 28 years has passed since he was born, 28 years without arms and legs. Ｎick’s first dream didn't come true, but he didn't lose his faith of himself, and the faith of this life.
Ｎick is li*ing a life without limbs, and also a life without limits. Ｃompare to him, young people, there is no excuses to lose our faith in oursel*es and this world. Ｉ understand that life couldn't be anything we want it to be, and life couldn't bring us e*erything we long for, sometimes, life e*en takes away our cherished ones.
