By focusing on high-carbon infrastructure as a means to create jobs, we distract ourselves from exploring how we can create hundreds of thousands of skilled, well-paid, secure jobs in the renewable energy sector, as Germany has done.

1.high-carbon infrastructure

2. the renewable energy sector

3.sb distract oneself from doing sth

1.By focusing on high-carbon infrastructure as a means to create jobs,

We focus on high-carbon infrastructure as a means to create jobs

2.we distract ourselves from exploring how we can create hundreds of thousands of skilled, well-paid, secure jobs in the renewable energy sector,

3. as Germany has done.

独立成句:as = hundreds of thousands of skilled, well-paid, secure jobs in the renewable energy sector

Done= created

Germany has created hundreds of thousands of skilled, well-paid, secure jobs in the renewable energy sector

As we all know, Kevin is handsome.

1. Kevin is handsome.

2. We all know Kevin is handsome.

JPP didn’t think Aman is the Mr. Right of Dalan, as Kevin thinks.

1. JPP didn’t think Aman is the Mr. Right of Dalan

2. Kevin thinks Aman is the Mr. Right of Dalan

Right。 Right。

1. JPP doesn’t think Aman is handsome, as Kevin thinks.

2. Mr. McWhorter is not arguing, as many do, that we can no longer think straight because we do not talk proper.

3. But surely that does not mean environmentalists concerned about

uncontrolled industrial growth are anti-science, as an essay in US News & World Report last May seemed to suggest.

4. We all think Kevin is handsome, as Aman believes.

As you are old, 引导状语从句(句子完整的)

As is shown above,

JPP doesn’t think Aman is handsome, as Kevin thinks.

1. JPP doesn’t think Aman is handsome,

2.Kevin thinks Aman is handsome

Mr. McWhorter is not arguing, as many do, that we can no longer think straight because we do not talk proper.

1.Mr. McWhorter is not arguing that we can no longer think straight because we do not talk proper.

2. many argue that we can no longer think straight because we do not talk proper.

But surely that does not mean environmentalists concerned about uncontrolled industrial growth are anti-science, as an essay in US News &

World Report last May seemed to suggest.

1.But surely that does not mean environmentalists concerned about uncontrolled industrial growth are anti-science.

2. an essay in US News & World Report last May seemed to suggest environmentalists concerned about uncontrolled industrial growth are anti-science.

We all think Kevin is handsome, as Aman believes.

1.We all think Kevin is handsome,

2. Aman believes Kevin is handsome

But the Nobel Foundation’s limit of three recipients per prize has long been outgrown by the collaborative nature of modern research—as is demonstrated by the discovery of the Higgs boson.

1.Nobel Foundation :

2. recipient

3. A has long been outgrown by B;B 早就使A过时了

4. the collaborative nature

1.But the Nobel Foundation’s limit of three recipients per prize

2. has long been outgrown by

3. the collaborative nature of modern research

4. as is demonstrated by the discovery of the Higgs boson. (就近指代!)As= the collaborative nature of modern research

= the collaborative nature of modern research is demonstrated by the discovery of the Higgs boson。

Nor, if regularity and conformity to a standard pattern are as desirable to the scientist as the writing of his papers would appear to reflect, is management to be blamed for discriminating against the “odd balls”among researchers in favor of more conventional thinkers who “work well with the team.”

1.regularity 常规性

2.conformity 一致性

regularity and conformity to a standard pattern

3.desirable

It is desirable that you should be there by two o’clock.

4. in favor of 喜欢,青睐

=in exchange for another thing(更好和更需要的事物)

He abandoned teaching in favor of a career as a musician.

He remained unmoved as before.

第二个as 是代词;因为reflect 是及物动词,需要宾语;

1)He is as tall as his father.

2)He looks as ill as he sounded on the phone.

He sounded on the phone

6.conventional 传统的

7.to the scientist

8. "odd balls"

if regularity and conformity to a standard pattern are as desirable to the scientist as the writing of his papers would appear to reflect

regularity and conformity to a standard pattern= A

if A are as desirable to the scientist as the writing of his papers would appear to reflect

1)if A are as desirable to the scientist

2)the writing of his papers would appear to reflect A

2.主句:

Nor

Management is not to be blamed /for discriminating against the "odd balls" among researchers in favor of more conventional thinkers who work well with the team.

1)Management is not to be blamed

2)for discriminating against the "odd balls" among researchers

3)in favor of more conventional thinkers who work well with the team.

方法:判断词性,确定含义和处理手法;

1)The bomb was disguised as a package.

2)You can use that glass as a vase.

判断方法:名词前的as 可以判断为介词;

1)You're as tall as your father.

2 ) She doesn't play as well as her sister.

As you were out, I left a message.

As she grew older she gained in confidence.

Happy as they were, there was something missing.

Simple as the picture is ,the meaning behind it is as deep as ocean.

Try as he might, he couldn't open the door.

判断方法:as 加的句子形容词或动词放到了句首;

She's very tall, as is her mother.

JPP thinks Aman is less handsome, as kevin thinks.

JPP doesn’t think Aman is handsome, as kevin thinks.

?as against sth

They got 27% of the vote as against 32% at the last election.

??as and 'when

We'll decide on the team as and when we qualify.

?as for sb / sth

As for Jo, she's doing fine.

?as if / as though

He behaved as if nothing had happened.

??as it 'is

We were hoping to finish it by next week—as it is, it may be the week after.

?as it 'were

Teachers must put the brakes on, as it were, when they notice students looking puzzled.

?as to sth | as regards sth

As to tax, that will be deducted from your salary.

United Kingdoms Independent Party

After the Brexit vote, it was a party without a point. Now it is reinventing itself as an extremist anti-migrant party

Unable to woo back its old voters with the carrot of Brexit, Ukip’s last manifesto focused on trying to mop up the most hardcore

anti-immigration sentiment by more clearly spelling out an anti-Muslim agenda.

The phrase “mop up”(Para. 2) most probably means________.

(A) absorb (B) remove

(C) clean (D) wash

1. Brexit vote

2. without a point

3. manifesto

5. hardcore

6. anti-immigration sentiment

7. spell out 制定

8. anti-Muslim agenda

9. reinvent

11. carrot

After the Brexit vote, it was a party without a point.

Now it is reinventing itself as an extremist anti-migrant party.

Unable to woo back its old voters with the carrot of Brexit, Ukip’s last manifesto focused on trying to mop up the most hardcore

anti-immigration sentiment by more clearly spelling out an anti-Muslim agenda.

切分:

1. Unable to woo back its old voters with the carrot of Brexit,

https://www.doczj.com/doc/316182685.html,ip’s last manifesto focused on trying to mop up the most hardcore anti-immigration sentiment

3.by more clearly spelling out an anti-Muslim agenda.

(B) remove (去除)(C) clean (清除)(D) wash (洗掉)

The music industry and YouTube are set to go head-to-head this week in a crucial vote in Brussels that could force the digital giant to pay billions of dollars in fees to popular artists such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry.

The music industry and YouTube will work together to fight for the rights of popular artists.

1.The music industry:

2. head-to-head

注意看英语解释:in which two people or groups face each other directly in order to decide the result of a disagreement or competition adj.

a head-to-head battle / clash / contest

??head-to-'head adv.:

They are set to meet head-to-head in next week's final.

are set to go head-to-head

3. a crucial vote in Brussels

4. the digital giant提示:没有无缘无故的爱,没有无来由的名词;

5. billions of dollars in fees

1.The music industry and YouTube are set to go head-to-head this week

2. in a crucial vote in Brussels

3.that could force the digital giant to pay billions of dollars in fees to popular artists such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry.

That= vote

The music industry and YouTube will work together to fight for the rights of popular artists.

Part C Directions: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written neatly on the ANSWER SHEET. (10 points) It was only after I started to write a weekly column about the medical journals, and began to read scientific papers from beginning to end, that I realised just how bad much of the medical literature frequently was. I came to recognise various signs of a bad paper: the kind of paper that purports to show that people who eat more than one kilo of broccoli a week were 1.17 times more likely than those who eat less to suffer late in life from pernicious anaemia. (46) There is a great deal of this kind of nonsense in the medical journals which, when taken up by broadcasters and the lay press, generates both health scares and short-lived dietary enthusiasms. Why is so much bad science published? A recent paper, titled “The Natural Selection of Bad Science”, published on the Royal Society’s open science website, attempts to answer this intriguing and important question. It says that the problem is not merely that people do bad science, but that our current system of career advancement positively encourages it. What is important is not truth, but publication, which has become almost an end in itself. There has been a kind of inflationary process at work: (47) nowadays anyone applying for a research post has to have published twice the number of papers that would have been required for the same post only 10 years ago. Never mind the quality, then, count the number. (48) Attempts have been made to curb this tendency, for example, by trying to incorporate some measure of quality as well as quantity int o the assessment of an applicant’s papers. This is the famed citation index, that is to say the number of times a paper has been quoted elsewhere in the scientific literature, the assumption being that an important paper will be cited more often than one of small account. (49) This would be reasonable if it were not for the fact that scientists can easily arrange to cite themselves in their future publications, or get associates to do so for them in return for similar favours. Boiling down an individual’s o utput to simple metrics, such as number of publications or journal impacts, entails considerable savings in time, energy and ambiguity. Unfortunately, the long-term costs of using simple quantitative metrics to assess researcher merit are likely to be quite great. (50) If we are serious about ensuring that our science is both meaningful and reproducible, we must ensure that our institutions encourage that kind of science.

The most thoroughly studied intellectuals in the history of the New World are the ministers and political leaders of seventeenth-century New England. According to the standard history of American philosophy, nowhere else in colonial America was “so much importance attached to intellectual pursuits.” According to many books and articles, New England’s leaders established the basic themes and preoccupations of an unfolding, dominant Puritan tradition in American intellectual life. 1. The author holds that in the seventeenth-century New England ____. [A]Puritan tradition dominated political life. [B]intellectual interests were encouraged. [C]Politics benefited much from intellectual endeavors. [D]intellectual pursuits enjoyed a liberal environment. 文中明确说到了in American intellectual life.而不是选项A中的in political life,可以直接排除A。 文中只有这样的相关叙述:“so much importance attached to intellectual pursuits.”“知识的追求是如此的受重视”。

I think that’s because there are a lot more trend- followers involved in the market than before. It’s a game where you’re forever chasing your tail. 2.take a page from... The energy sector could take a page from financial firms, which do a good job of ensuring that Internet-based transactions are secure. 3. It never rains but it pours.“不雨则已,一雨倾盆”,形容坏事不来则已,一来则不止。 It never rains but it pours

My dream My dream has always been to work somewhere in an area between fashion and publishing. Two years before graduating from secondary school, I took a sewing and design course thinking that I would move on to a fashion design course. However, during that course I realised that I was not good enough in this area to compete with other creative personalities in the future, so I decided that it was not the right path for me. Before applying for university I told everyone that I would study journalism, because writing was, and still is, one of my favourite activities. But, to be absolutely honest, I said it, because I thought that fashion and me together was just a dream - I knew that no one, apart from myself, could imagine me in the fashion industry at all!
