Adults understand what it feels like to be flooded with objects. Why do we often assume that more is more when it comes to kids and their belongings? The good news is that I can help my own kids learn earlier than I did how to live more with less.

I found the pre-holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate less-used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her holiday due to illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund(基金) (Our kindergarten daughter is serious about becoming a doctor.)

For weeks, I've been thinking of bigger, deeper questions: How do we make it a habit for them? And how do we train ourselves to help them live with, need, and use less? Y esterday, I sat with my son, Shepherd, determined to test my own theory on this. I decided to play with him with only one toy for as long as it would keep his interest. I expected that one toy would keep his attention for about five minutes, ten minutes, max. I chose a red rubber ball-simple, universally available. We passed it; he tried to put it in his mouth; he tried bouncing it, rolling it, sitting on it, and throwing it. It was totally, completely enough for him. Before I knew it an hour had passed and it was time to move on to lunch.

We both became absorbed in the simplicity of playing together. He had my full attention and I had his. My little experiment to find joy in a single object worked for both of us.

A. The more, the better.

A. Saving up for her holiday

D. Giving the money to a sick mother

A. To try out an idea

B. To show a parent’s love

C. To train his attention

D. To help him start a hobby

7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Take It or Leave It

B. A Lesson from Kids

C. Live More with Less

D. The Pleasure of Giving

The name of the race comes from the name of an Alaska gold rush town, Iditarod. It means “distant”or “distant place.”It comes from one of the languages of native Alaskans.

More than sixty sled teams begin the race in Anchorage. When the teams reach the outskirts(郊外) of town, they get a taste of Alaska’s wilderness. For about two weeks, they will fight the unbearable cold, wind, snow, and ice to complete the race. The temperature on the trail is often well below zero degrees. The Iditarod trail extends for about a thousand miles. It has many meeting places. At these places, the race teams “check in”to let the officials know how they are doing. Some teams get into trouble along the way. Officials will stop them and give them the help they need. For example, officials might stop a team’s progress to give first aid, or to collect an injured or tired dog. These dogs are well cared for and will be reunited with their owners after the race.

The Iditarod trail is an important part of Alaska’s history. A part of the trail was used by some heroic dogs and humans in 1925. In Nome, Alaska, many people were catching the deadly disease Diphtheria. So the whole town was in quarantine, or isolation, in order to stop this disease. The only way to get medicine to Nome was by dogsled. About twenty "mushers", or dogsled drivers, offered to help. They wanted to save the people of Nome from this terrible disease.

Today the Iditarod race shows honors to this special heroic journey and to all of the journeys on the famous trail. As the race organizers say, the Iditarod is “the last great race on Earth.”

8. Which of the following is TRUE about the Iditarod race?

A. It is held every year in the downtown streets in Anchorage.

B. It usually lasts about two weeks in freezing cold weather.

C. It is held to honor the gold seekers who once lived in Iditarod.

D. Its trail is totally different from the one used by some heroic dogs.

9. In the race, it’s possible for a seriously injured dog ______.

A. to finish the race unnoticed

B. to meet its owner again

C. to work for a new owner

D. to get timely treatment

10. When a town is in quarantine, people in the town ______.

A. can get whatever they want easily

B. have to exchange gold for medicine

C. are not allowed to go out freely

D. will be remembered as heroes

11. The passage is mainly about ______.

A. life in Alaska

B. a dogsled race of Alaska

C. a period of Alaska’s history

D. heroic dogs and people in Alaska

D

Staying positive through the cold season could be your best defense against getting ill, a new American study suggests.

In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fail ill. The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive emotional style” can help ward off the common cold and other illness.

Researchers believe the reasons may be both objective(客观的)―as in happiness improving immune(免疫的) function―and subjective(主观的)―as in happy people being less troubled by a sore throat or runny nose. “People with a positive emotional style may have different immune responses to the virus,” explained lead study author Dr Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “And when they do get a cold, they may consider their illness as being less severe.”

Cohen and his colleagues has found in a previous study that happier people seemed less likely to catch a cold, but some questions remained as to whether the emotional quality itself had the effect.

For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults complete standard measures of personality qualities, physicals health, and emotional “style”. Those who tended(趋向于往往) to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive emotional style, while those who were often unhappy, tense, and hostile had a negative style.

Afterwards, the researchers gave them nose drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus. Over the next six days, the volunteers reported on any aches, pains, sneezing they had, while the researchers collected objective data. Cohen and his colleagues found that happy people were less likely to develop a cold.

What’s more, when happy folks did develop a cold, their symptoms were less severe than expected based on objective measures.

On the contrary, people with negative characters were not at increased risk of developing

a cold based on objective measures, though they did tend to get down about their symptoms.

“We find that it’s really positive emotions that have the big effect,” Cohen said, “not the negative ones.”

So can a bad-tempered person fight a cold by deciding to be happy?

12. The purpose of Cohen’s new study was to_______.

A. find effective ways to fight illnesses

B. test people’s different immune responses to cold virus

C. tell differences between happy people and unhappy people

D. examine whether health was related to emotional styles

13. The underlined phrase “ward-off” in Paragraph 2 means “______”.

A. get close to

B. keep way from

C. get used to

D. go on with

14. How did Cohen reach his conclusion?

A. By comparing the experimental results of different groups.

B. By asking the volunteers to complete a form.

C. By collecting data among people with a cold.

D. By observing the volunteers’ symptoms.

15. Cohen’s new study showed that _____.

A. an emotional style is difficult to change

B. happy people are immune to cold virus

C. People’s attitudes towards illnesses are different

D. happiness itself helps protect people from cold
