A new scientific survey has found that the glaciers of the Arctic are the world’s biggest contributors to rising seas, shedding ice at an accelerating rate that now adds well over a millimeter to the level of the ocean every year. That is considerably more ice melt than Antarctica is contributing, even though the Antarctic contains far more ice. Still, driven by glacier clusters in Alaska, Canada and Russia and the vast ice sheet of Greenland, the fast-warming Arctic is outstrip ping the entire ice continent to the south---for now.

However, the biggest problem is that both ice regions appear to be accelerating their losses simultaneously-suggesting that we could be in for an even faster rate of sea-level rise in future decades. Seas are rising by about three millimeters each year, according to NASA. That’s mainly driven by the Arctic contribution, the Antarctic and a third major factor- that ocean water naturally expands as it warns.

For Arctic ice loss, "the rate has tripled since 1986, " said Jason Box, first author of the new study and a scientist at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. "So it clearly shows an acceleration of the sea-level contribution.”

“Antarctica will probably take over at some point in the future, but during the past 47 years of this study, it's not controversial that the arctic is the largest contribution of land ice to sea-level rise. ” he said.

Scientists in the United States, Chile, Canada, Norway and the Netherlands contributed to the work, published in Environmental Research Letters.

The Arctic is also losing floating sea ice at a rapid pace, but that loss does not contribute substantially to rising seas( though it has many other consequences). Sea ice losses closely match what is happening on land, which makes sense because both phenomena are being driven by the fast warming of the atmosphere in the Arctic, which has heated up at a rate much faster than seen in lower latitudes. Warming seas are also driving some of the ice loss.

The research was performed by merging a highly reliable gravity-based measurement of Arctic mass loss from NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment(GRACE) satellites with older direct ice measurements, taken from the field, going back to 1971.

The total Arctic loss at present is 447 billion tons of ice per year- which Box calculated is about 14,000 tons of water per second. That's for the period between 2005 and 2015. Between 1986 and 2005, the loss is calculated at around 5,000 tons per second--therefore, the rate has almost tripled.

Separate research has recently found that the Antarctic's loss rate has also tripled in just a decade, reaching 219 billion tons per year from 2012 to 2017.

Assuming these numbers are correct and summing them together, the worlds polar regions are losing about 666 billion tons of ice to the ocean each year-amounting to a little bit less than two millimeters of sea-level rise annually.

TVs are entering a new phase. Just when we were getting used to UItraHD4K televisions, the industry is gearing up to start pushing (still extremely pricey) upgrades to 8K sets, And talk about weird: Samsung and Apple became official frenemies by including an app for iTunes on Samsung’ s newest TVs.

Walking the show floor this year, I picked these products---some practical, some downright strange---that captured the spirit of where things are headed...or at least the creativity that makes CES(消费电子展)so much fun.

This is 2019’s must-have television for billionaires and wannabe James Bonds .With the tap of a button, LG’s 65-inch TV dramatically rises from a long box where it is rolled up inside. How did they do that? The screen uses plastic and OLED tech, which in addition to having fantastic image quality is also capable of bending. (Coming this year, well also be getting smartphones with foldable OLED screens. )The idea is you can place your TV in front of a window without having it block the view all the time. But with a TV like this, who wants to be inconspicuous? Go ahead and show of:LG says it can withstand being rolled up for at least 50.000 cycles.

Samsung TVs will now support an app for Apple’s iTunes movies and TV shows. That means you can buy video from Apple without plugging in Apple's own streaming box, the Apple TV. And new sets from a variety of makers including Samsung and LG will also support Airplay 2, Apple’s tech for beaming music, pictures and video from iPhones and Macs to the big screen. Why is Apple suddenly playing nice with other hardware brands? It's part of a bigger push by the tech giant into making money through services, including subscriptions for music and (perhaps soon)streaming video.

1.According to the passage, what's the authors identity?

A, Samsung TV’s salesperson

B LG’s salesperson

C. A field staff of CES

D. An journalist covering CES

3.According to the passage, which of the following descriptions of the newest TV is wrong?

A.It has been gearing up to start pushing upgrades to 8K sets.

B. It is still very pricey for its high-tech and fascinating quality.

C. Its screen uses plastic and OLED tech so that it can bend.

D. It is portable and supports Airplay 2 now.

Many critics are calling 208 a great year or movies, and with rich material from “Roma” to “Eighth Grade"t o “the Favorite” to “A Star is Born”. "h as a an hard position to oppose .But there have been many years that felt monumental while we lived them, and then proceeded to fade with time.

Some years just stick with is, cracking with so much creativity and produce so many influential titles that we remember them for decades. witch leads to the classic question: What year was the greatest of all years ?We rounded up film buffs at The Washington Post and began brainstorming .

arguing and writing.

Eventually we found the best year in movies---all seven of them: 1939,1946, 1955.......

---Travis M. Andrews

It’ s hard to view “Gone with the Wind(卿本佳人)” these days as anything but massively problematic. Slavery is presented in soft-focus.Rhett Butler carrying a struggling Scarlett O’Hara up the stairwell ,intended to make the audience swoon,is now as likely to make them vomit. If it was never screened in public again, then frankly, my dear, I wouldn’t give a---well, you know.

But there’s no denying that the Technicolor melodrama introduced generations of filmmakers and ticket buyers to the concept of a sweeping historical epic. Without "Gone with the Wind”, would there have been “Titanic"? “Brokeback Mountain”? It's a building block of modern cinema. More importantly, it's a lesson about America: The romantic stories we tell about ourselves often look different, even horrifying, with the benefit of time.

“Gone with the Wind" wasn’t even close to the best movie of 1939. The best, of course, was"The Wizard of Oz”, the original family-friendly fantasy, which simultaneously debuted Judy Garland and"Somewhere over the Rainbow.” Eighty years on, is here a single human who has not, at some point, linked arms to skip down the sidewalk like they are off to see the wizard?

The other top movies from 1939 can comparatively look like sideshows, but in any other year they would have been main events: Jimmy Stewart, trying to bring dignity to politics with a barn- burning filibuster in"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell chewing scenery in “The Women” which, revolutionarily ---then and today-didn't have a single speaking part for men. “Stagecoach” provided John Wayne his breakthrough role, and fully cemented the American western.

In fact, I’d argue that the best way to think of cinematic 1939 is as scaffolding---helping film makers build the movies that cam next From romantic dramas to rip-roaring adventures, every genre today was shaped by the works of that year. There have been massive shifts and improvements over time. But 1939 is still the scaffolding for a lot of what makes us pour into theaters today, and what we expect to see there once the lights dim.

Here's one way to stop living paycheck to paycheck.

My grandmother Big Mama taught me everything I know about budgeting, and she did it on the back of an envelope.

I' m reminded of Big Mama's budget brilliance as I hear from readers who work for the federal government or who are contractors affected by the partial shutdown.

Some of these readers have always struggled because they just don't make enough from their government or contracting jobs. Others live paycheck to paycheck despite earning good money. It's the latter group who could weather a few missed paychecks if they had done what my grandmother did all her life: budget.

I often use my grandmother as an example of good money management because, with so little, she did so much. She worked as a nursing assistant at a hospital, so her pay wasn't great. My grandfather was an alcoholic, so we couldn’t always count on his paycheck making it home. Yet Big Mama, who took me in when I was 4, never was late on a single bill-ever! She raised five grandchildren on her salary and still managed to save. Her home was paid off before she retired.

I know folks who earn six-figure salaries working for the federal government or contractors, and one missed paycheck is sending them into a spiral of despair. Let me be clear: The shutdown is a manufactured, unnecessary hardship forced on the more than 800, 000 federal workers who are impacted.

Still, I know many would be in a better financial place if they had just budgeted better.

In 2018, only 41 percent people surveyed said that they have a budget and keep close track of how much they spend on such things as food, housing and entertainment, according to a survey by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. Even if you're not affected, the government shutdown is a reminder of how important it is to have an emergency fund, which you can' t have if you don ' t budget.

For this month's Color of Money Book Club, I'm recommending a book that will give you a crash course in budgeting basics. Its"Budgeting 101, by Michele Cagan, a certified public accountant. “One of the main benefits budgeting brings is busting you out of damaging financial cycles, like living paycheck to paycheck, "Cagan writes.

Here's the thing about budgeting. It has a bad reputation. When I bring it up, this is what people say:

---"It’s too restricting.”

---"It’s too hard.”

---"It's depressing.”

---"It makes life no fun.”

In her book, Cagan covers a lot in short, easy-to-follow sections. All the information is there to show you how to track expenses, save, get out of debt and set goals to do the things you really want. Cagan makes the case that a budget isn’t a buzz killer. It's financial salvation.

“The right budget is a game plan for your money that assigns specific jobs to every dollar, whether that job is to pay the electric bill, buy this week's groceries, or beef up your 401(k)account,” she says.

I love budgeting because it doesn't run my life--its a reflection of my values. Budgeting allowed my husband and me to save enough to send all three of our children to college debt-free. It's going to help us pay off our home before we retire. It helped us give back in ways we never thought we could achieve, such as tithing 10 percent of our income to support our church, which in turns supports more than 100 ministries that serve our community by doing things such as feeding the hungry and helping the homeless and jobless.

1. The problem of the current government shutdown is that_______.

A. Many federal workers’ situations become worse.

B. Many Americans lose their jobs.

C. People have to budget better.

D. Many people have always struggled for life.

2. What does the phrase "living paycheck to paycheck "mean?

A. It's one of damaging financial cycles.

B. It refers to those who make much money but don' t budget well.

C. It means making ends meet.

D. It means that people should plan for their money.

3. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Many people lost their jobs because of the shutdown.

B. The government shutdown remind people of valuing their current job.

C. It is necessary to spare some money for emergency.

D. Budgeting well enables one to earn more money.

4. The author wrote the passage mainly to_______.

A. teach people how to budget

B. call on people to budget

C. Encourage people to develop money-managing skills

D. urge the government to improve works living standards

A new front has opened in the college culture wars: Should women’s colleges accept transgender students? Kassy Dillon, founder of Lone Conservative, articulated the conservative answer for the Wall Street Journal last month, asserting that women s colleges have abandoned their Feminist legacy by welcoming trans men. For Dillon(who, like me, graduated from Mount Holyoke), students who were assigned male at birth or who transition to male jeopardize the identity and reputation of women’s colleges as educational spaces for women.

Dillon’s take, however, is based upon a historical fallacy: It considers both feminism and the values of women's colleges to be static things. It assumes that Mount Holyoke has been animated by a 1960s-style feminism since its founding in 1837, only to have been corrupted in recent years by a new, oppressive feminism. In reality, however, Mount Holyoke's brand of feminism has been

ever-changing.

Since 1837, American women's colleges have striven to provide opportunities for women pursue their goals. At different moments, those goals included training for missionary work, meeting romantic partners or, most recently, pursuing a career. Yet even as these goals have changed, the motivating force has remained the same: a mission rooted in public service and social justice.

Mary Lyon, a pioneer in women’s higher education, founded Holyoke College as the first permanent, all-female institution of higher education in th United States. Establishing a women's seminary was a radical act in a society where women were not expected to be educated. But although radical, Lyons mission was neither liberal nor feminist, at least not in the modem sense of those terms. Instead, she was partly motivated by a devout evangelical Protestantism specific to the nation s religious revival of the early 19th century.

As such, Lyon’s school aimed to prepare women to travel worldwide to spread evangelical Protestant Christianity, democracy and capitalism. Mount Holyoke's extant physical education requirement sought to prepare students to be fit for travel. Thus, imperialism, anathema to modern day radicals, was central to the founding mission of the college.

After the Civil War, schools such as Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Radcliffe and Smith joined Mount Holyoke in teaching women, developing the network that we now call the Seven Sisters. These colleges were founded for different purposes than Mount Holyoke was, although not always for more progressive ones. For example, part of the motivation behind the founding of Radcliffe was educating women who sought Harvard-level studies, while keeping them out of Harvard.

Meanwhile, as Catholic and Jewish students started attending Mount Holyoke, the mission moved away from Lyon's religiosity and proselytizing. By the turn of the 20th century, women's colleges were no longer primarily associated with evangelical missionaries. Religion transitioned from an explicit objective of women's higher education to an implicit driving force, one pushing students toward progressive activism and advancing social change.

1. According to the passage, what do you think of those women’s colleges?

A. They were founded out of feminism but weren’t accepted at first.

B. They ever provided opportunities for women to pursue their goals.

C. Their goals have changed as well as the motivating force.

D. They helped prevent the Civil War.

2. Which of the following statements is the same as the author's idea?

A. Mary Lyon set up the first permanent, all-female institution of higher education of America.

B. Lyon's mission were both liberal and feminist to found a women college.

C. Lyon's school aimed to prepare women to travel worldwide to spread imperialism.

D. These"seven sisters"colleges were founded for the same purposes as Mount Holyoke.

3. Women's colleges were primarily associated with the purpose of______.

A. religion

B. liberation

C. justice

D. feminism

4. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A. Mary Lyon, a pioneer in women’s higher education.

B. Seven Sisters--a series of early woman colleges.

C. American women's colleges in aerly times.

D. American women's colleges change to admit trans students.

When experts ponder the future of automobiles. they tend to focus on two novel modes of transportation: driverless cars and flying cars. At this years CES technology show in Las Vegas,Hyundai has introduced a third vision for how vehicles might traverse the world around them ---one that does not rely solely on wheels.

More than 2,000 years after the wheelbarrows debut in classical Greece, ushering in a new er of locomotion. Hyundai s latest concept car is designed to walk as easily as it rolls, Called"Elevate, the daddy-long-legs-like machine has wheels at the end of long robotic legs that would allow"users to drive, walk or even climb over the most treacherous terrain, " according to the company

The company-which labels the machine a UMV, or"ultimate mobility vehicle-said the concept was inspired by the need for"resilient transportation"in disaster zones, where conventional vehicles are often rendered useless. "When a tsunami or earthquake hits, current rescue vehicles can only deliver first responders to the edge of the debris field, "John Suh, Hyundai vice president and head of Hyundai CRADLE, said in a statement on the company's website “ They have to go the rest of the way by foot. Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete. "Suh added the vehicle's usefulness would not be limited to emergency situations. For people living with disabilities without access to an ADA ramp, the statement said, an autonomous version of the Elevate could walk to a front door and position itself so a wheelchair could“roll right in.”

How realistic is the Elevate concept?

David Bailey, a professor at Aston Business School in England, told the BBC that although concept cars may not make it to the factory floor. they can help generate valuable new ideas.“For most of us, it's going to be wheels and roads, but in extreme situations there may be scope for this sort of thing. " Bailey said. “There may well be applications in terms of emergency services--- but there are very big technological challenges to make this sort of thing.”

Hyundai's vision is undeniably ambitious. The company said it envisions being able to switch out different Elevate body types for different situations. The vehicle is designed to use “both mammalian and reptilian walking gaits”, giving it the ability to travel in any direction, the company said, noting the legs fold up into a"stowed drive-mode" to save power.

Those legs. the company said, would be able to climb over a five- foot wall and step across a five-foot gap. A concept video produced by Hyundai shows the vehicle performing a mixture of driving and walking. When the surface is relatively flat, the vehicle tums to conventional wheels, but when the terrain grows craggy, the vehicle's wheels appear to lock into place and its legs extend, taking synchronized steps forward.

When surrounded by massive chunks of concrete from what appears to be a collapsed structure,Elevate is shown leveling itself on an incline so rescuers can load a stretcher inside. “Imagine a car stranded in a snow ditch just 10 feet off the highway being able to walk or climb over the treacherous terrain, back to the road, potentially saving its injured passengers---this is the future of vehicular mobility, " said David Byron, industrial design manager at Sundberg- Ferar, a Detroit-based design firm that partnered with Hyundai to create the Elevate.

I. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the article about where"Elevate"can be used?

A.In a tsunami.

B. In an earthquake

C. In severe weather conditions

D. In some situations where the disabled need help

2. The underlined word"terrain"in the second paragraph from bottom probably mean

A.road B geography C. condition D.situation

3. Which can best explain why "Elevate"may have a promising future according to the text?

A.Because it can help disabled people better their life in many ways.

B. Because the research funds for this kind of car are available and sufficient.

C Because it has a wide range of uses in many fields as well as in people’ life.

D. Because it is nothing but a technological challenge to make this sort of thing.

4.Which of the following best describes the authors main purpose in writing this article?

A.To introduce readers an interesting technological product.

B. To persuade readers to buy this kind of new product.

C. To entertain readers with this new product.

D. To explain to readers why the Elevates invention is difficult.

Bad Dreams Are Good

What are dreams for? A handful of theories predominate. Sigmund Freud famously contended that they reveal hidden truths and wishes. More recent research suggests that they may help us process intense emotions, or perhaps sort through and consolidate memories, or make sense of random neuron activity, or rehearse responses to threatening situations. Others argue that dreams have no evolutionary function, but simply dramatize Despite being largely unsupported by evidence, Freud's view maintains a strong following around the world. Researchers found that students in the U.S., South Korea, and India were much more likely to say that dreams reveal hidden truths than to endorse better-substantiated theories. Relatedly, people put great stock in their dreams: In the same study, respondents said that dreaming about a plane crash would cause them more anxiety than an official warning about a terrorist attack.

Even if dreams can't foretell the future, they seem to expose our shared fascinations. The majority of dreams occur during REM sleep cycles (快速动眼期), of which the average person has four or five a night. Eight percent of dreams are about sex, a rate that holds for both women and men-though women are twice as likely as men to have sexual dreams about a public figure, while men are twice as likely to dream about multiple partners. Anxiety is also rife: A study of Canadian university students found the most common dream topics, apart from sex, to be school, falling, being chased, and arriving too late for something.

For all the commonalities dreams exhibit, they vary across time-people who grew up watching black-and-white TV are more likely to dream in black and white -and culture.A1958 study determined that compared with Japanese people, Americans dreamed more about being locked up, losing a loved one, finding money, being inappropriately dressed or nude, or encountering an insane person. Japanese people were more likely to dream about school, trying repeatedly to do something, being paralyzed with fear, or wild, violent beasts. (For their part, beasts almost certainly have nightmares too: Just about all mammals are thought to dream, as are birds, some lizards, and-unique among invertebrates-cuttlefish. The dreamiest member of the animal kingdom is the animal kingdom is the platypus, which logs up to eight hours of REM sleep a day.)

If human dreams sound bleak, bear in mind that even negative ones can have positive effects. In a study of students taking a French medical-school entrance exam, 60 percent of the dreams they had beforehand involved a problem with the exam, such as being late or leaving an answer blank. But those who reported dreams about the exam, even bad ones, did better on it than those who didn't.

So the next time you dream about an education-related experience in which you are both falling and being chased, don' t worry: It's probably totally meaningless. Then again, your brain might be practicing so you 'll be ready if such an event ever comes to pass.

63. According to different theories mentioned in the passage, dreams may have relationships with various things except_____?

A. body healing

B. bringing truth to light

C. memory classification D preparation for real danger

64. The underlined word "endorse" in the passage means_____?

A. check

65. Which of the following is TURE according to the passage?

A. People feel more stressed when encountering emergencies in reality than in dreams.

B. Our dreams often reflect our emotion of anxiety in multiple forms.

C. There's no tendentiousness in dream content between people from different count.

D. Humans have the longest REM sleep among all animals that dream.

66. Writer came to conclusion that bad dreams are good because ______________.

A. It is a kind of comfort and relief that dreams are usually meaningless.

B What you experience in dreams usually turns out to be the opposite.

C, Bad dreams seem to helps us prepare beforehand to perform better in reality.

Alan Jamieson remembers seeing it for the first time: a small, black fiber(纤维)floating in liquid. It resembled a hair, but when Jamieson examined it under a microscope, he realized that the fiber was clearly synthetic (人工合成)- a piece of plastic.. And worryingly, is student Lauren Brooks had pulled it from the gut of a small amphipod living in one of the deepest parts of the ocean.

For the past decade, Jamieson, a marine biologist at Newcastle University, has been sending vehicles to the bottom of marine trenches(海沟), which can be as deep as the Himalayas are tall. These landers have collected amphipods- scavenger relatives of crabs and shrimp that thrive in the abyss. Jamieson originally wanted to know how these animals differ from one distant trench to another. But a few years ago, he decided to analyze their body for toxic, human-made pollutants, which have been banned for decades but which persist in nature for much longer. The team found much PCBs(多氯联苯). Some amphipods were carrying level

50 times higher than those seen in crabs from one of China's most polluted rivers. when the news broke, Jamieson received calls from journalists and concerned citizens. And in every discussion, one question kept coming up: what about plastics?

The world produces an estimated 10 tons of plastic a second, and between 5 million and14 million tons sweep into the oceans every year. Some of them washes up on beaches. About 5 trillion pieces currently float in surface waters, mostly in the form of tiny, easy-to-swallow fragments that ends up in the gut of albatrosses, sea turtles, plankton, fish, and whales. But those pieces also sink, snowing into the deep sea and upon the amphipods that live there

“It's not a good result, "Jamieson said.

“I don' t like doing this type of work.” When he submitted his findings to a scientific journal, the researchers who reviewed the paper reasonably asked how he could tell that the fibers were actually plastic. “Our response was, ‘Some of it’s purple!’ Jamieson says.

"There’s bits of pink in there. This doesn't come from animals.” To satisfy the critics, his team chemically analyzed a subset of the fibers and found that all of it was synthetic.

Other scientists have also found plastic litter in the deep; just last year, one team documented a plastic bag at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Until now, no one had shown that abyssal animals were actually eating those fragments, but it seems obvious that amphipods would. When a morsel(食物碎屑) hits the ocean floor, amphipods turn up in droves.

Food is scarce in the deep, so amphipods eat pretty much anything, which makes them particularly vulnerable to plastics. And since they sit at the bottom of the ocean food webs, their appetite can upset entire ecosystems. They're like bags of peanuts, " Jamieson says, "Everything else eats amphipods-shrimp, fish -and they’ll end up consuming plastics, too. And when the fish die, they get consumed by amphipods, and it goes round and round incircles.”

I imagine pollution in the Mariana 'Trench is an abstract concept for most people, but for those of us living in the Mariana Islands this has consequences for what ends up on our dinner plates, says Angelo Villagomez, from the Mariana Islands who works for the Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project. "So what can we do? The International Union for the Conservation of Nature recommends we protect 30 percent of every marine habitat to address human impacts, but that will only help if were also sustainably managing the remaining 7o percent, reducing carbon emissions, and limiting the pollution being dumped in the ocean in the first place.

63. The underlined word "abyss" in the passage is closest in meaning to ______?

【参考答案】ACBC

【答案详解】

63.词意推断题(要求:理解上下文)

先看原句“These landers have collected amphipods- scavenger relatives of crabs and shrimp that thrive in the abyss." thrive是高考高频词,意为“兴盛;繁荣生长”由上文知道这些片脚类动物生长在海沟中一海洋深处的沟洞, abyss原意深渊,即bottomless hole无底洞,故选A。

64. 细节判断题(要求:通读全文,出处比较)

A选项说片脚类动物因海洋污染而产出纤维物质,而实际文中意思是它们吃下了纤维,明显错误。

B选项原文为“ Jamieson originally wanted to know how these animals differ from one distant trench to another." Jamieson原想探究不同海沟的生物差异,后来改为硏究生物毒素,所以他的研究结果无关差异。

C选项说Jamieson证明了这些纤维是人造的,原文谈到“ To satisfy the critics, his team chemically analyzed a subset of the fibers and found that all of it was synthetic. synthetic意为人工合成的,故C正确。

Cutting down on cutting down用了cutting down的两个含义;减少和砍伐,连起来就是减少砍伐,生动形象。又比如2019春考Nuclear energy shrinks its way to success既突出核反应堆体积在减小,也反映出这项技术正在通向成功。这篇文章讲的是在马里亚纳海沟的生物链污染,C选项连用两个比较级,也精准概括了文章内容,故选C。

大学英语阅读训练五篇

Passage 1 There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the students to grow as people develop their own interests in many subjects. Open education allows students to be responsible for their own education, as they are responsible for what they do in life. Some students do badly in a traditional classroom. The open classroom may allow them to enjoy learning. Some students will be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry about grades or rules. For students who worry about these things a lot, it is a good idea to be in an open classroom. But many students will not do well in an open classroom. For some students, there are too few rules. These students will do little in school. They will not make good use of open education. Because open education is so different from traditional education, these students may have a problem getting used to making so many choices. For many students it is important to have some rules in the classroom. They worry about the rules even when there are no rules. Even a few rules will help this kind of student. The last point about open education is that some traditional teachers do not like it. Many teachers do not believe in open education. Teachers who want to have an open classroom may have many problems at their schools. You now know what open education is. Some of its good points and bad points have been explained. You may have your own opinion about open education. The writer thinks that open education is a good idea, but only in theory. In actual fact, it may not work very well in a real class or school. The writer believes that most students, but of course not all students, want some structure in their classes. They want to have rules. In some cases, they must be made to study some subjects. Many students are pleased to find subjects they have to study interesting. They would not study those subjects if they did not have to. 1.Open education allows the students to ____. A.grow as the educated B.be responsible for their future C.develop their own interests D.discover subjects outside class 2. Open education may be a good idea for the students who ____. A.enjoy learning B.worry about grades C.do well in a traditional classroom D.are responsible for what they do in life 3. Some students will do little in an open classroom because ____. A.there are too few rules B.they hate activities C.open education is similar to the traditional education D.they worry about the rules 4. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?____ A.Some traditional teachers do not like it.

(英语)高三英语阅读理解技巧(很有用)及练习题

(英语)高三英语阅读理解技巧(很有用)及练习题 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 American college students are becoming more adventuresome as they study abroad, showing less interests in English-speaking destinations such as Great Britain and Australia and more in such countries as China, India, Argentina and Brazil. Britain remained the most popular study destination in 2005, according to annual figures from the Institute of International Education, followed by Italy, Spain and France. But the number of American students studying in Britain and Australia descended a little, even as the number of American students abroad rose by 8%. The growth came in non-English speaking European countries and in Asia. China is now the eighth most popular destination for American students, attracting nearly 6,400 in 2005, up 35% from the number of the year before. Argentina and India saw increases of more than 50%. Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, said that a range of factors contributed to the trend, from growing awareness of globalization after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to programs such as former President Bush's National Security Language Initiative, which trains soldiers, intelligence officers and diplomats in foreign languages. “What Americans are doing is waking up and discovering there's a world out there,” he said. Other figures showed the flow of students in the opposite direction, from foreign countries into American universities. The institute found that international enrollment (入学) in American higher education remained steady at about 565,000. The figures are of keen interest to universities, which depend on foreign students for teaching and research help, and to policy-makers, who consider it important, as future foreign leaders may be familiar with the United States. The year of 2005 saw big increases in students from South Korea, Mexico and Taiwan of China. India sends the most students and China is No.2. Other countries that show large percentage increases in the number of students sent to the US include Nepal and Vietnam, while Japan, Turkey and Malaysia saw declines. About 58% of international students in the US come from Asia. (1)What does the underlined word “descended” in Paragraph 2 means? A. Changed. B. Declined. C. Multiplied. D. Increased. (2)Why do more American students study in Asia? A. They expect to get more teaching and research help. B. They lose confidence in English-speaking countries. C. They are afraid that terrorist attacks will happen again. D. They prefer to explore a different world from their own. (3)Where were most foreign students in America from in 2005? A. China. B. India. C. Argentina. D. Britain. (4)What can we infer from the passage? A. There were 6,400 American students studying in China in 2005. B. Chinese students to America will overpass Indians in the future. C. International enrollment in American higher education changed a lot. D. Asian students

大学英语B阅读理解练习题及答案

Passage 1 Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the countr y. If one likes garden, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night. 1. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city. B. All the people who work in London prefer to live in the country. C. Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London. D. Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside. 2. With the same money needed for ________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country. A. getting a small flat with a garden B. having a small flat with a garden C. renting a small flat without a garden D. buying a small flat without a garden 3. When the garden is in blossom, the one ________ has been rewarded. A. living in the country B. having spent time working in the garden. C. having a garden of his own. D. having been digging, planting and watering 4. People who think happiness lies in the city life would feel that ________ if they had to live outside London. A. their life was meaningless B. their life was invaluable C. they didn’t deserve a happy life D. they were not worthy of their happy life 5. The underlined phrase “get away from” in the 3rd paragraph refers to ________. A. deal with B. do away with C. escape from D. prevent from

Which of the following can be inferred? (正确答案为 A) 但是绝大部分同学选D.(A qualified pilot has to pass comprehensive examinations on political and military

theory).即使在已经给出正确答案后,他们还是觉得无法理解。其实这个句子是对原文They had also passed comprehensive examinations on political and military theory, flight skills, management and mental health的复述,而非推断。 1. What is implied in the sentence(s) ... ? 2. It is implied in the passage that 3. The passage implies/suggests that 4. It can be inferred/seen/concluded from the passage that 5. Which of the following can be inferred from this passage? 6. Which of the following can be concluded from this passage?

2017届全国高考英语阅读理解汇编(1)英语试卷SYS201708100601 一、阅读理解 详细信息 1. 难度:中等 阅读理解。 Many of us still tend to think that emotions can affect reasonable thought, and sometimes land us in trouble. But in recent years psychologists have taken quite a different view. Keith Oatley,Professor of Psychology at Glasgow University,is involved in the research which shows the fundamental importance of emotions. He believes we are very ambivalent about them:we think of our emotions as being unreasonable, but we also consider them as essential to being human. For example,Mr Spock,a character in the television series Star Trek,is superintelligent and he has no emotions at all. However,he is never made captain of the spaceship.Maybe, this is because Mr Spock is not the kind of person you can share your feelings with—a person who shows his emotions. As Professor Oatley points out,our emotions have very important functions, for example, fear. If we cross the road and a car approaches,we usually stop moving or step back.We stop what we are doing, check what we have done and pay very careful attention to the environment. The emotion of fear makes us take this small series of actions which,on average, help preserve our safety. On the other hand,if things are going well and small problems come up,we find we can solve them with the resources we have to hand.As a consequence,we tend to feel happy and usually continue doing the job. Anger is an emotion that tends to occur when someone is preventing us from doing something. Then this small “kit” of reactions enables us to prepare ourselves to be quite aggressive to that person,or to try harder, and so on. Professor Oatley believes emotions generally occur at these important moments in actions. With fear and anger our emotions make us decide to start doing something else, while with happiness they “suggest” we continue what we are already doing. 1.What’s Keith Oatley’s opinion about emotions? A.They affect reasonable thought. B.They get us into trouble. C.They are helpful to us. D.They are reasonable. 2.What does the underlined part “we are very ambivalent about them”in Paragraph 2 mean? A.We have contradictory feelings towards emotions. B.We have similar ideas of emotions.

This is now also true of the building industry; for mechanization has been introduced. System building can save both time and money. The principle of system building is that the building is made from a set of standard units. These are either made at the building-site or at a factory. Some designers, in fact, are standardizing the dimensions of rooms. They are made in multiples of a single fixed length, usually ten centimeters. This is called a modular (标准件的) system, and it means that manufactures can produce standardized fittings at a lower cost. The most important fact about system building is its speed. A ten-storey flat, for example, can be completed in four months. There are several new methods of system building. One is the panel method. In this case, the construction company sometimes erects a factory on the site. The walls and floors of the building, called panels, are cast in a horizontal or vertical position. Conduits for electrical wires and sleeves for pipes are cast in the panels when they are being made. The moulds for making these castings are situated all around the building. After the concrete panels are cast, they are allowed to set and harden for a week. Next they are lifted by a tower crane on to any section of the building. There the panels are cemented together at their joints and the floor covering is laid. After the panels have been cemented together, the crane lifts a case into the area. It contains all the fittings to be installed, such as wash-basins, radiators and pipes. Finishing tradesmen, such as plumbers, plasterers, painters and electricians, follow behind to complete the work. In some building developments, in some countries, whole flats with internal features like their bathrooms, bedrooms and connecting stairs, and weighing as much as twenty tons, are carried to the building-site ready-made. A giant overhead crane is used to lift them into position. In the future, this method may become more widespread.
