As a culture, we are always crazy about anti-aging. But it only increases 36 . Instead, we need to understand the tricks of time. In How to Stop Time, my novel about a 439-year-old man who 37 far more slowly than normal, I wanted to think about what being really old would be like. 1 wanted to 38 a character who was struggling with his relationship to time. I wanted to see if it would be possible to enjoy the 39 when you had so much past and so much future. I wanted to 40 how time does not always feel like the same thing.

I first truly understood this when I became ill with 41 problems in my 20s. It was well over a year 42 I began to feel anything like normal again. In my mind, days 43 out for what felt like weeks, and that year still feels like half a lifetime. Time was the 44 , in that sense, but in another way it was a friend.

Depression told me a lot of 45 that time could disprove. It told me Iwouldn’t be alive to see my 25th birthday, 46 that by Christmas I’d be confined(禁闭) to a padded cell wearing a straightjacket. Time was the one thing bigger than 47 itself. And I could feel its 48 as I built up days and weeks and months. It was the currency I traded in and 49 . Eventually, very 50 , my mind readjusted itself and 51 the lies that depression was telling it.

So, I have a( n) 52 relationship to time. I do have worries about growing old, like everyone, but 1 would have 53 worries about not growing old. Rather than searching for a 54 life, we should understand that “forever is composed of nows”. The 55 is in how to stop worrying and inhabit the nows that we have.

The birdfoot violet(鸟足紫罗兰) produces flowers in fields and forests in the central and eastern United States and Canada. Among these flowers, the commonest form has five light-purple petals(花瓣) arranged in a ring. But some of these violets instead have three pale-purple petals and two dark-purple ones. This wildflower comes in two differently colored varieties. The cause is hard to explain for a long time. However, a new study may have an answer.

The dark petals of the birdfoot violet aren’t black, but their purple is so dark that it looks almost black. “This effect is called ‘optic black’, explained Peter Bernhardt. He studies plants at Saint Louis University in Missouri.

Scientists had guessed for many years that this optic blackness made the dark-purple petals warmer than the lighter ones. If so, then those warmer petals might be an attractive place for bugs seeking the pollen(花粉) and sweet nectar from inside the flowers. “It’s like putting on a black coat when it’s cold outside and sitting

in the sun,” explains Bernhardt. Yet no one had actually measured the temperature difference between the two types of petals.

So Bernhardt, his colleague Retha Edens-Meier and others set out to do just that. They found on average dark-purple petals were about 3 degrees Celsius(5.4 degrees Faharenheit) warmer than light-purple ones. “For a cold-blooded insect landing on a flower, that’s a big difference,” Bernhardt notes.

Scientists knew that some flowers use warmth to attract bees and other pollinators. The Arctic poppy uses its cup-shaped petals to direct rays of sunlight to its center. This creates a warm spot for landing insects. And that warmth is welcome in the cold Polar Regions where that poppy grows.

The birdfoot violet produces flowers in early spring. That can be quite a cold time across its range. Bernhardt, Eden-Meier and their team wondered whether bees preferred the violet morphs(形态) with warmer, dark-purple petals. Since bees pollinate these flowering plants, a preference for one form of the flower could have major influence on its population size.

For two springs, the biologists tracked bee activity at their two study sites. Bees in the sunny field rarely visited the violets with dark petals. The light-colored violets that they preferred were far commoner there than violets with dark petals. In fact, there were 40 times more light-colored violets at the sunny site than ones with two-toned flowers!

That same overwhelming preference did not show up at the shaded forest site. Bees there actually preferred the two-tones flowers. And this seems to have affected how many of those plants populated the area. The researchers counted 59 light-colored violets and almost as many as 51 of the flowers with two-toned flowers.

58. What has long been a mystery according to the first paragraph?

A. How birdfoot violets evolved

B. How many colors purple petals exactly have

C. Why birdfoot violets have light-purple petals.

D. Why birdfoot violets have petals of different colors

59. Why did the birdfoot violet evolve to have dark-purple petals?

A. To absorb more sunshine.

B. To attract insects for their own benefits.

C. To survive the cold weather in early spring.

D. To take the place of light-purple violets.

60. The underlined part in the last paragraph means__________.

A. preferring pale-colored flowers

B. preferring dark-purple petals

C. preferring a warm forest site

D. preferring more sunlight

With round lenses (镜片) set in super-thick frames, these new eyeglasses look as if they belong to a cartoon character. But what they lack in style, they make up for in smart design. Their lenses are made of glycerin — a thick, colorless liquid — encased in clear rubber. And without effort, the lenses will focus on whatever the wearer looks at.

Nazmul Hasan is the first to admit that the glasses he helped design may not be comfortable or look cool. “They’re not very fashionable,” he admits. “And they’re heavy,” notes this graduate student in engineering at the University of Utah in Salt

Lake City. Still, these glasses are truly special. The lenses in normal glasses

curve(成曲线形) in a specific way to help a person’s eyes focus on somethi ng close

or far. Not everyone who needs glasses requires the same curved form. So one’s glasses

will not necessarily work for others. But the glasses that Hasan and his team designed

can achieve that.

Consider, for example, a woman who wants to read a Science News for Students story.

With an app on her phone, the reader sends her lens prescription to the glasses. Now,

when she puts the glasses on, a small infrared (红外线的) light in the frames begins

sending out light pulses. That light bounces(弹起) off what’s in front of the wearer

—here, perhaps a smart phone —and back to the glasses. Those glasses use the bounced

light to calculate the distance from the glasses to the smart phone screen. Tiny motors

in the frame respond by bending the lenses so that its cu rvature matches the person’s prescription. The article comes into focus then.

Tunable, liquid lenses can be turned into “instant prescription eyewear”, says

Tracy Xu, who does not work on the new glasses. Xu is an engineer at the University

of Central Florida in Orlando. Tunable glasses could be useful in emergencies and

in poor countries, she says. A whole family might use one pair as a spare one for

broken glasses. “Millions of people in developing countries cannot afford an eye exam,” says Xu. “Low-cost, self-focusing liquid lenses can become a relatively cheap solution.”

But these glasses are not yet ready for the world outside the lab. The lenses

only focus in one direction. That’s a problem because people move their eyes around

all the time without moving their heads, Hasan says he can fix the problem by placing

an eyeball movement detector in the frames. Then the lenses will know what a person

is looking at, and adjust as needed.

Today, the frames weigh about three times as much as ordinary eyeglasses. And

they’re uglier than anything people would normally wear, Hasan concedes. So his

team’s next aim, he says, is to make it more fashionable and lighter.

61.Which of the following is TRUE about the glasses?

A.They have lenses of the same curvature.

B.They can be adjusted for different head sizes.

C.They can meet visual needs of different people.

D.They really help a person’s eyes focus on something.

62.By giving the example in Paragraph 3, the author intends to tell us__

______.

A.how the glasses function

B.when people can use the glasses

C.how the glasses respond to light

D.what advantages the glasses have

63.What is the disadvantage of the new glasses now?

A.They take quite a long time to work.

B.They cannot focus on something far.

C.They’re not very convenient to use yet.

D.They cannot respond to different distance quickly.

64.What does the underlined word “concedes” in the last paragraph mean?

A.fears

B. acknowledges

C. argues

D. suggests

D

In King Henry VI, Shakespeare wrote, “To weep is to make less the depth of sadness,” and the American writer Lemony Snicket said, “Unless you have been very, very lucky, you know that a good, long session of weeping can often make you feel better, even if your circumstances have not changed one bit.” Charles Darwin thought that the production of tears was merely a useless side effect of the way that the muscles around eyes worked. For him, those muscles had to contract(收缩) from time to time so that they didn’t overflow with blood; the flow of tears was simply an unintended consequence of that evolved physiological process.

We now know that crying — at least, the sort that adults do — is a complex physiological response to some kind of emotional stimuli(情绪刺激). The most noticeable feature is of course the flowing of tears, but it also includes changes in facial expression and breathing patterns. Sobbing, for example, refers to the rapid inhalation(吸入) and exhalation that so often accompanies crying. Sometimes the production of tears is a response to a chemical stimulus like when you accidentally rub your eyes after eating foods with hot tastes. However, in 1981, psychiatrist William H Fery II discovered that tears brought on by sad movies had more protein in them than those that flowed in response to some freshly cut onions.

As anyone who has attended a comedy act or listened to a bridegroom read marriage vows(誓言) to his bride, emotional tears aren’t limited to feeling of sadness. While all of us are familiar with the feelings that are associated with crying, whether for joy or sorrow, we have no idea why we do it as adults — but there are plenty of explanations.

One is that adult crying isn’t actually all that different from the sort that babies do, at least when it comes to its social nature. In other words, perhaps weeping is a literal cry for attention, a means of asking for help from our friends when we need it the most. It’s a way of communicating our inner emotional state at a time when we may not be able to fully express it.

While this may explain some forms of crying, many researchers have found that adults often cry when they’re completely alone. Another possibility is that crying might serve as a means of “secondary appraisal”, helping people to realize just how upset they are, a way of helping them understand their own feelings —it’s an idea that may arouse arguments, with at least some evidence to support it, in some cases. And then there’s the notion of catharsis. This kind of idea is consistent not only with the words of Shakespeare, but with Roman poet Ovid, who wrote, “It is a rel ief to weep; sadness is satisfied and carried off by tears.” The Greek philosopher Aristotle also wrote that crying “cleanses the mind”. In a study, one psychologist found that 94% of articles about crying suggested that it helped relieve

psychological tension.

Indeed, a new study of nearly 4,300 young adults from 30 countries found that both their mental and physical well being were improved after a bout of crying, but not all. The difference seemed to lie in the social context: if a person felt embarrassed about crying in public, for example, they might feel less resolved than if they cried alone or with a single close friend. The study also found that when people tried to suppress or hide their crying, they would break down, feeling much worse afterwards.

65.The first paragraph serves as ___________.

A.analyses of how tears are produced

B.descriptions of ideas that cause arguments

C.explanations of why crying makes people feel better

D.examples of disagreements over the effect of crying

66.What does William H Frey II believe in?

A.Even tears themselves are different.

B.Adults have more facial expressions

C.Crying brings about changes in breathing patterns.

D.Chemical stimuli are more likely to make people cry.

67.Which kind of crying shows a likeness to babies’ crying?

A.Crying when seeing a comedy show.

B.Crying when hearing marriage vows.

C.Crying when seeking help from others.

D.Crying when having plenty of feelings.

68.What can we learn about the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5?

A.Crying is merely part of human nature,

B.Crying is associated with happiness or sadness.

C.Crying has different effects in different social contexts.

D.Crying brings relief from emotionally stressful situations.

69.How many reasons for crying are mentioned in the passage?

A.Three

B. Four

C. Five

Most people have some regret that they just can’t seem to get rid of. But holding on to regret about the past that can’t be changed can have a bad impact on the possibility of a happy future. Regret is a waste of time, emotion and energy. To make sure that your life is a successful one, you need to take action to live in a way that you have no regret holding you back.

Some people make very big decisions with very little consideration at all, and

as a result they often regret their decisions. Before choosing a college major, getting married or accepting a job, you must think about all conditions carefully and make a conscious decision rather than a careless one. Big decisions aren’t the only ones that require forethought, though. Before you become angry and say something you will regret later, think about what you’re going to say.

Some of things will be easy to do and some will be hard, but keep your eyes on the prize of living a successful life without regret, and you’ll find that achieving your goals might be easier than you think. But don’t just daydream about those goals —make an actual list, written down in black and white, and refer to it now and then to see what you have left to do.

When you’re feeling happy and full of energy, taking care of yourself isn’t a problem. But in those days when you feel like crawling beneath the bed and never coming out again, you still must take care of yourself. You can do what you want and don’t get angry with yourself about your shortcomings. On the contrary, you just admit them and try to change them and move on. Improving your mental health is just as important as taking care of yourself physically.

Keep those who are important to you very close and be sure to let them know how important they are to you. Family, friends, co-workers and people who are as close as your families are your lifelines that you can depend on whenever you need them to help you remember what’s important in life. You should make sure of repairing your relationships with your friends if something bad happens.

Last but not least, learn to give yourself some relaxation and not to waste your time regretting things you cannot change. Treat those things properly and move on. Life is hard, but it is precious. Don’t waste time regretting the past, or your future will get here before you know it.

第五部分书面表达 (满分25分)

Right after the Second World War, Germany was in ruins. Almost all the houses, factories and schools were destroyed. Plenty of people were homeless as well as jobless. Worse still, the supply of water and electricity was often cut off in the city. Two American journalists interviewed a German family living in the basement. The husband was disabled from the war and the wife was just dismissed from a clothing company. Worse still, there were bills for them to pay—four children to care for and food to buy. Life was hard for them at that time.

After the interview, the journalists chatted with each other on the way back to the company.

“Do you think the Germans could rebuild their homeland?”

“Absolutely.”

“But I can’t see any hope for the country at all. How can you be so certain about that?”

“Have you noti ced what they put on the table in the basement? There was a vase of flowers. A nation, suffering at such moment, hasn’t forgotten about flowers. It shows that hopes are not lost. They are still able to dream. A nation with hope can create miracles. They ar e sure to be able to rebuild their homeland.”
