In a foreign country, a man visited a local restaurant. He didn't speak their language. He ordered something indecipherable off the menu. When the waiter brought him a plate of delicious looking fried noodles, he smiled and made an OK sign at the waiter with his thumb and forefinger linked in a circle.Looking angry, the waiter then picked up the dish and thrown it to his lap. What he did wrong, he wondered.Well, nothing is quite as it seems when it comes to using hand gesture in another country.

Gestures have been used to replace words in many countries, and they are often specific to a given culture.Gesture may mean something complimentary in one culture, but is highly offensive (冒犯) in another.

The gesture “thumb-up” is commonly misinterpreted. In English, it is popularly known as “thumbs up”,despite the fact that the action is commonly performed with only one hand.English-speaking Caucasians use it to signal “OK”,which is the same meaning as O.K.ring gesture. The two can in fact be used almost interchangeably.

Avoid using this gesture in Southern Sardina or Northern Greece unless you want to invite a fight. While American, British and Australian would use the thumb up to signal hitch-hiking to the drivers, this message will not encourage a Greek driver or motorist to stop to give them a ride.

There are no right or wrong signals, only cultural https://www.doczj.com/doc/3e17734495.html,ck of cultural understanding will lead to disharmony among people from different cultures. When we know what to look for, such encounters with other cultures are actually very interesting, fascinating and fun.It is certainty a great topic to discuss over a cup of coffee and cakes.

25.What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean?

A.Full of admiration.B.Full of aggression.

C.Full of complexity.D.Full of certainty.

If you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see what's around. It's called Apple Day but in practice it's more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.

Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans.Although it doesn't taste of anything special, it's still worth a try, as is the knobbly (多疙瘩的) Cat's Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else.

There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you'll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it's a_pipe_dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.

At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.

Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.

29.What can we learn about Decio?

A.It is a new variety.

B.It has a strange look.

C.It is rarely seen now.

D.It has a special taste.

根据第二段中的“it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio”可知,德西奥(Decio)现在比较罕见。 文中并未提及德西奥(Decio)的外形奇异,故B项错误;D项与第二段中的“Although it doesn't taste of anything special, it's still worth a try”表述相反。

30.What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream”in paragraph 3 mean?

A.A practical idea.

B.A vain hope.

C.A brilliant plan.

D.A selfish desire.

根据第三段中的“One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you'll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it”可知奥尔良雷奈特(Orleans Reinette)是最好吃的苹果品种之一,但它的种植条件非常苛刻,所以喜爱它的人想经常吃到它是徒劳的愿望,故选B。

31.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To show how to grow apples.

B.To introduce an apple festival.

C.To help people select apples.

D.To promote apple research.

The 1993 movie Jurassic Park wasn't the first film to show dinosaurs in the modern world. But it did a good job of bringing the idea of cloning dinosaurs into popular culture. It represented dinosaur cloning in a way that made sense to a lot of people, and it was a successful film, making more than $900 million worldwide.

Jurassic Park built on the idea of getting DNA from mosquitoes kept in amber. While this might seem possible at first sight, it's highly unlikely that scientists could find usable dinosaur DNA in mosquito fossils.Scientists would need a very specific sample—a female mosquito that had taken lots of dinosaur blood immediately before being trapped in amber.Since fossilization in amber is a relatively rare event, the chances of this happening are pretty small.

The lack of possible samples isn't the only problem. Most insect fossils found in amber are also too young to contain dinosaur blood—dinosaurs were gone by the time the insects became trapped. Many insects went bad from the inside out after they were trapped, leaving nothing inside for scientists to try to find. Finally, the sample would have to be very dry, since DNA can break down quickly in the presence of water.

But if researchers did find a perfectly kept mosquito with a body full of dinosaur blood, bringing back its DNA would still be difficult. The blood with the dinosaur DNA would be surrounded by the body of an insect, which has its own DNA.There could also be DNA from the other cells trapped in the amber. Then, of course, there's the DNA in the laboratory itself—and in the body of the scientist.

32.Why is the film Jurassic Park mentioned at the beginning?

A.To introduce the topic of cloning dinosaurs.

B.To encourage scientists to clone dinosaurs.

C.To give a simple introduction to dinosaurs.

D.To stress the possibility of cloning dinosaurs.

根据第一段中的“But it did a good job of bringing the idea of cloning dinosaurs into popular culture.(电影很好地将克隆恐龙的想法带入了大众的文化生活中。)” 故选A。

33.The key to cloning dinosaurs is to gain________.

A.insect fossils

B.dinosaur DNA

C.dinosaur blood

D.mosquitoes in amber

根据第二段中的“Jurassic Park built on the idea of getting DNA from mosquitoes kept in amber. While this might seem possible at first sight, it's highly unlikely that scientists could find usable dinosaur DNA in mosquito fossils.Scientists would need a very specific sample—a female mosquito that had taken lots of dinosaur blood immediately before being trapped in amber.(从保存在琥珀中的蚊子身上提取恐龙的DNA,电影《侏罗纪公园》是在这样的想法指导下拍摄的。虽然乍一看这似乎是可能的,但科学家们很难在蚊子化石中找到有用的恐龙DNA。科学家们需要一个非常特殊的样本——一只被困在琥珀中之前已经吸取大量恐龙血液的雌性蚊子。)”可知,克隆恐龙的关键是获取恐龙的DNA。故选B。

34.What is the author's opinion on cloning dinosaurs?

A.It's a step away from success.

B.It will be a fruitless attempt.

C.It requires further research.

D.It lacks creative work.

根据第四段中的“But if researchers did find a perfectly kept mosquito with a body full of dinosaur blood, bringing back its DNA would still be difficult.(但如果研究人员真的发现了一只保存完好的蚊子,它的身体充满了恐龙的血液,那么要找回恐龙的DNA仍然很困难。)”

35.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Why Was Jurassic Park Successful?

B.Reasons for Dinosaurs' Dying Out

C.Can Scientists Clone Dinosaurs?

D.Ways of Cloning Dinosaurs

C解析:标题归纳题。通读全文可知,文章以电影《侏罗纪公园》引出“克隆恐龙”的话题,并论述了克隆恐龙的可能性非常小。故标题Can Scientists Clone Dinosaurs?(科学家能克隆恐龙吗?)与文章内容吻合。A.Why was Jurassic Park Successful?(电影《侏罗纪公园》为何取得成功?)只是文章提到的一个事实;

B.Reasons for Dinosaurs' Dying Out(恐龙灭绝的原因)在文中没有被提到;D.Ways

Unit 1 In search of the amber room Frederick William I, the king of Prussia, could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an amazing history. This gift was the Amber Room, which was given this name because several tons of amber were used to make it. The amber which was selected had a beautiful yellow-brown color like honey. The design of the room was in the fancy style popular in those days. It was also a treasure decorated with gold and jewels, which took the c ountry’s best artists about ten years to make. In fact, the room was not made to be a gift. It was designed for the palace of Fredrick I. However, the next King of Prussia, Fredrick William I, to whom the amber room belonged, decided not to keep it. In 1716 he gave it to Peter the Great. In return, the Czar sent him a troop of his best soldiers. So the Amber Room became part of the Czar’s winter palace in St Petersburg. About four meters long, the room served as a small reception hall for important visitors. Later, Catherine Ⅱ had the Amber Room moved to a palace outside St Petersburg where she spent her summers. She told her artists to add more details to it. In 1770 the room was completed the way she wanted. Almost six hundred candles lit the room, and its mirrors and pictures shone like gold. Sadly, although the Amber Room was considered one of the wonders of the world, it is now missing. In September 1941, the Nazi army was near St Petersburg. This was a time when the two countries were at war. Before the Nazis could get to the summer palace, the Russians were able to remove some furniture and small art objects from the Amber Room. However, some of the Nazis secretly stole the room itself. In less than two days 100000 pieces were put inside twenty-seven wooden boxes. There is no doubt that the boxes were then put on a train for Konigsberg, which was at a time a German city on the Baltic Sea. After that, what happened to the Amber Room remains a mystery. Recently, the Russians and Germans have built a new Amber Room at the summer palace. By studying old photos of the former Amber room, they have made the new one look like the old one. In 2003 it was ready for the people of St Petersburg when they celebrated the 300th birthday of their city.

A FACT OR AN OPINION What is a fact Is it something that people believe No. A fact is anything that can be proved. For example, it can be proved that China has more people than any other country in the world. This is a fact. Then what is an opinion An opinion is what someone believes is true but has not been proved. So an opinion is not good evidence in a trial. For example, it is an opinion if you say “Cats are better pets than dogs”. It may be true, but it is difficult to prove.
