A new study has claimed that men really are more intelligent than women. The study concluded that men's IQs are almost four points higher than women's.

British-born researcher John Philippe Ruston says the finding could explain why so few women make it to the top in the workplace.

He claims the “glass ceiling”phenomenon is probably due to inferior(较差的)intelligence, rather than discrimination or lack of opportunity.

The University of Western Ontario psychologist(心理学家)reached his conclusion after

scrutinizing the results of university tests taken by 100,000 students aged 17 and 18 of both sexes.

A focus on the factors such as the ability to quickly grasp of a complex concept, verbal reasoning skills and creativity-some of the key factors of intelligence-showed that the male teenagers had IQs that were an average of 3.63 points higher. The average person has an IQ of around 100.

The findings, which held true for all classes and levels of parental education, overturn(推翻)a 100-year conclusion that men and women average the same in general mental ability. They also conflict with evidence that girls do better in school exams than boys.

But Professor Ruston argues that the faster maturing of girls leads to them performing better than boys in the classroom.

The first person who really opened the world's eyes to the plight(苦难)of Africa's young AIDS victims was 11-year-old Nkosi Johnson, who made a speech at the 2,000 international AIDS conference in Durban.

“I hate having AIDS because I get very sick and I get very sad when I think of all the other children and babies that are sick with AIDS,”the short youngster told 10,000 delegates from around the world.

Nkosi, who was at the time the country's longest living HIV-positive child, died the following year. His adoptive mother(养母),Gail Johnson whose story is being turned into a Hollywood movie said Nkosi would have been excited to know children can get ARVs(抗逆转录病毒药物)and live longer lives.

“But he would surely be disappointed there are not as many as there should be,”she said.

Even when children manage to get ARVs,some have nobody to make sure they take them correctly,as their parents die or are too sick to care for them.

Those living with HIV who do survive beyond childhood often face huge challenges that their friends can only imagine, including how to develop relationships with members of the opposite sex and have healthy children themselves.

About 11-million children in sub-Saharan Africa who have lost one or both parents to the disease are often left to support themselves.

Silindile Ncwane(17)from KwaZulu-Natal province explained the problems of living with his elderly grandmother who took him and his brothers and sisters in after his mother died.

“For me it's very hard to get them ready for school every day and help them with their homework. They always ask questions I don't know how to answer and it's very hard for me.I am being a mother to them,”Ncwane's grandmother said.

You can deal with winter in two ways:Escape it or embrace it.Watching people dive into snow—in nothing but bathing suits and boots—I'm guessing these people choose to do the latter.

The seasonal madness is part of the Quebec Winter Carnival, now in its 62nd year, said to be the world's largest winter festival.About a half-million people each year come to Quebec City to delight in frigid (寒冷的) fashion.

“We embrace winter,”said Paule Bergeron of Quebec City Tourism.“It's time to play.”The carnival runs from Jan.29 to Feb.14,with dozens of events.I went last year for a few frigid days, staying at the Hilton Quebec,in the thick of the downtown action.Families are a big part of the carnival. What attract kids are things like ice-fishing at a man-made pond stocked with fish, where if you catch something, you can pay to have it smoked and eat it,or donate it to a food bank.

It's a good chance to experience the culture of this European-feeling city, and nowhere is more evident than in Bonhomme, the carnival's goodwill ambassador,a living avatar (化身) in the form of a giant snowman with a human inside gliding (滑行) around the festivities.

There are two night parades at the carnival.I attended the second one last year, the night before the carnival's close. The streets were lined with thousands of people in a gentle snow and bitter cold, watching local dancers and school groups glide by.In the end,Bonhomme's float came into view, and kids in the crowd went crazy. As the parade ended, thousands followed behind it,becoming part of the Quebec Winter Carnival's magic and madness. And with a cup of milk in my hand,I realized that for once, not only did I not mind winter,I embraced it.

Schedule regular playmates.

Start when your child is around one year of age,set aside a few times a week for playtime with partners. 16 Even so,you still might want to give your baby a chance to observe and interact with children who are at the same developmental level.

Join a playgroup.

You can organize a playground in your own home.It may involve just one other child,or as many as three or four. 19 Remember:safety first.

Offer guidance when needed.

If you see a child playing in a way that might hurt another, certainly you need to help him/her find a safer way to have fun. 20 But remember that some children need to watch for a while before they feel comfortable joining in-encourage everyone to join the fun,but don't push.

Unit 2 The United Kingdom单元综合测评

(时间:100分钟;满分:120分)

Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

The brain is a remarkable part. It's responsible for thoughts and feelings. Now a new study finds that going through tough times as a kid also can have an impact. The adult brains of people who lived through lots of stress before the age of six—and then became depressed or anxious as teenagers—were different compared with adults who had an easier childhood. It seems that teens changed the shape of their brains by internalizing (使内在化) the stresses experienced years earlier.

Researchers already knew that the shape and size of a child's brain can change in response to lots of stress. They also knew that adults were more likely to be depressed if,as kids, they'd lived in poverty. Some studies showed that these depressed adults had unusual changes in their brain shape. But no one had tested if the early stress and later brain changes were linked.

Scientists in England studied almost 500 boys from birth until the ages of 18 to 21.Sarah

Jensen is one of the new study's authors.Almost all of the boys her team studied experienced some hard times as kids. And,she concludes,“This is not necessarily harmful.”To some extent, that's just life. What can be dangerous, she says,is when children experience too many forms of difficulties. Her team's new data suggest that the tougher the childhood, the stronger the impact on the brain might be.

What's happening in the world around us relates to how we feel. Her team linked more childhood stress to more depression.Still, she notes,it's possible that if you find support for anxiety or depression, you might be able to prevent the changes seen here.“If you can change the environment, you can change the course of things,”Sarah says. So,she recommends,if teens develop anxiety or depression,it's good to ask for psychological doctors to give advice.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They began to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country's economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them.Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists.Tourism should also advance the wealth and happiness of local inhabitants.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country's economy can suffer.

On the other hand,if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs.Business can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals,first-class roads, and other support facilities needed by tourist attractions. For example,a major international class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owner of the hotel lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

Londoners are great readers. They buy vast numbers of newspapers and magazines and of books-especially paperbacks, which are still comparatively cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy “proper”books, too, printed on good paper and bound(装订)between hard covers.

There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in book-selling.Perhaps the best known of these is Charring Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which boasts of being “the biggest bookshop in the world”to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens' time. Some of these shops stock,or will obtain, any kind of books, but many of them specialize in second-hand books,in art books,in foreign books,in books on philosophy, politics or any other of the countless subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet!

Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books,Charring Cross Road is not the cheapest. For the really cheap second-hand books, the collector must venture off the beaten track,to Farringdon Road, for example,in the East Central district of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. The booksellers come along each morning and pour out their sacks of books onto small handcarts. And the collectors, some professionals and some amateurs, have been waiting for them.In places like this they can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old one that may be worth many pounds.

So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

4.阅读理解. They baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert (警觉). Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝视)starts to lose its focus — until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world? Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise (同样地)when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots. 1. The experiment described in Paragraph 1 is related to the baby’s__. A. sense of hearing B. sense of sight C. sense of touch D. sense of smell 2. Babies are sensitive to the change in______. A. the size of cards B. the colour of pictures C. the shape of patterns D. the number of objects 3. Why did the researchers test the babies with drumbeats? A. To reduce the difficulty of the experiment. B. To see how babies recognize sounds.
