Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take, for example,

the story of one ten-year-old boy who decided to study judo[柔道] despite the fact that

he had lost his left arm in a car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo instructor. He was doing well. So he

couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the instructor had taught him only

one move.

"Instructor," the boy finally said, "Shouldn't I be learning more moves?"

"This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know,"

the instructor replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the instructor took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising

himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult,

but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged. The boy deftly[巧妙的] used

his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the

boy appeared to be defeated. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a

time-out. He was about to stop the match when the instructor intervened(干涉).

"No," the instructor insisted, "Let him continue."

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: He dropped his guard.

Instantly, the boy won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and his teacher reviewed every move in each and every match.

Then the boy gathered the courage to ask what was really on his mind.

"Instructor, how did I win the tournament with only one move?"

"You won for two reasons," the teacher answered. "First, you've almost mastered one

of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move

is for your opponent to grab your left arm."The boy's biggest weakness had become his biggest

st rength.

24.According to the second paragraph the boy was ______ with his teacher.

A. unsatisfied.

B. angry.

C. pleased.

D. .careful

25.Why did the referee call a timeout in the finals?

A. Because the boy was defeated.

D. Because he thought the boy would give up. 26.In the last paragraph, the author wanted to tell us________.

A. the reason why the boy won every match.

B. the instructor was very excellent.

C. who was the champion.

D. the boy was very courageous. 27.What is the best title of the passage?

A. No Pains, No Gains.

B. A Great Judo Master.

C. Weakness Can Become Strength

D. Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way

C

Every day life is made and lost. Every day, life goes on. Every day we experience some of the most important parts of life and may not even realize it: love, generosity, and perseverance. These values aren't just important to us; they make the world what it is.

Scientists say that gravitational (重力的) force makes the world turn, but some people say that love makes it go round. Love can be found anywhere: in families, friends, and even complete strangers. Even if you can't see it, you know it's there. Never complain that you can’t find love in the w orld. Only a person who loves the world from the heart can feel to be loved.

Love may connect people all over the world, but what would the world be without generosity? Whether after a national disaster, or a school fund-raiser, one thing is certain-- it is better to give than to receive. Generosity is found everywhere and whether it's a large or small act, it makes a difference. Most of all, being generous is not something you need any qualifications for, but no matter what you do, it can make a difference. Sometimes, though, it takes effort to be generous, which leads us to perseverance.

Founding a country, riding a bike, or finishing an essay, these are all finished with perseverance. Perseverance is the one thing that can help us achieve whatever we want. It is what helps scientists to discover cures for diseases, and athletes to become champions. You may fail, but every time you make a mistake, that's one less to make the next time.

There is an infinite (无穷的) number of things we value, but without love, generosity and perseverance, we just don't think that our life or the world would be the way it is. 28.The writer compares lov e to_______.

A. the world

B. warm sunshine

C. warm heart

D. the gravity 29.According to the writer, generosity means that we need to______.

A. be confident about the efforts we’re taking.

B. raise money for school children

C. be a giver rather th an a taker

D. take big actions to collect money

30.We find the passage conveys a(n) _____ attitude to us when we read between the lines.

A. negative

B. worried

C. indifferent

D. positive

31.Which of the following shows how the passage develops?

D

Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.

Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as ‘bracketing’. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual (彼此的)growth.

Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.

It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic(有疗效的) .In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy(心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.

32.What does the underlined phrase probably mean in Paragraph 2?

A. Accepting other persons

B. Setting aside others’ desires

C. Put oneself into his or her position and be considerate

D. Focusing on the topic they are talking

33.Which of the following is CORRECT after reading the passage?

A. Many people are more interested in thinking than in talking.

B. We tend to listen with purpose in communication

C. Satisfying others is essential in talking..

D. Listening can’t be accomplished by the mutual growing will.

34.After reading the passage we may likely guess it is ______.

A. a medical report

B. a scientific research

C. public science

D. a literature report

35.We can learn from the last paragraph that the patients _______.

A. became worse after being talked to

B. were to make sense of their value

C. knew the reason for their illness

D. picked up because of being truly listened to

one possible version:

The topic of my speech today is about mobile phone. Nowadays no matter where we are,we can see many adults and children playing with their mobile phones. This can happen at a bus stop,in a restaurant or at a supermarket. Why is that?

There are two reasons accounting for it .The first reason is supposed to be that people are trying to make good use of time. And the second one may be that people show little interest in what's happening around them. However, focusing only on what's on our mobile phones may not only do harm to our eyesight, but also prevent us from communicating normally. Therefore, some other ways to kill time are strongly suggested. For me,chatting with others is a good replacement of playing with mobile phones.

But the truth is, it is very hard work. If you’re successful, there are deadlines to be met, appointments to keep and the press to deal with. If you’re not successful, then life is extremely tough. I remember when I started out, I had to search the advertisement board at my drama school every day to look for acting jobs. Drama school was expensive and I needed extra cash to help pay the fees. I welcomed every small job. I played extras in many crowd scenes and became a confident participant in a lot of TV commercials for hair shampoo, soap and washing powder. I had been working for about two years before I got my lucky break. One day, as I was passing the drama school, I decided to go in to check the notice board. There was nothing on it and I was just leaving when the secretary came along the corridor with a piece of paper. She asked me how I was and I told her life was hard and work was difficult to find. The next moment, she put the paper in my hand and walked away. My hands were shaking as I unfolded the paper, full of expectation. To my surprise, it was an audition (试演) for a clown (小丑) for the Canadian circus. I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. I had expected an audition with a famous director for a new film! When I was at drama school, there had been a course in acrobatics (杂技) and clown tricks. I had gained top marks in this course for originality and daring. Later I went to the audition feeling very strange. This was not what I’d had in mind when I enrolled in drama school. To my surprise, the job as a clown turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I loved every moment of getting dressed up and putting on the make-up. I had the opportunity to travel

I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am. 36.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.Lady, are you rich? B.A story of Thanksgiving Day C.Don't forget how rich you are D.Does cups and saucers match well? 37.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.The girl thought the writer was rich just because she wanted to make the writer happy. B.The writer had thought she wasn't rich because her supplies were not expensive. with Truman Capote, her neighbor who was two years older than her. Seeing his daughter’s imagination, Lee’s father gave her a typewriter.

A Many of us mistakenly believe that it's wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)? If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time. Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some of the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else. You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior(自卑) because you don't have much money and you don't drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes you as a person. The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any. 1. According to the author ___________ plays an important role in making friends. A. admitting your shortcomings B. self criticism C. modesty D. confidence 2. If you are not liked by a person, _________. A. you should find the reason in yourself B. you’d better talk with the person face to face C. you may not be the one to be blamed D. you and that person misunderstand each other
