Do you know Roma people? They were called Gypsies(吉普赛人)by Europeans because they thought they came from Egypt. About a thousand years ago, the Roma people left their homeland. They are known as nomads because for hundreds of years many of them have lived in large groups that travel from place to place. They have no real homeland.

Today, the Roma are now living all over the world. They have kept their language and many customs. For example, it’s important for Roma to marry other Roma. It’s also a custom for pa rents to choose the person their children will marry. Roma people get married when they are young, sometimes even as young as 14.

Romany is the language of the Roma people, which was written down only recently. Because the Roma are nomadic and have moved all over the world, their language has developed in many different ways. It is sometimes hard for Roma in one part of the world to understand Roma from another part.

Roma music is famous all over the world, because many Roma throughout history have been mus icians. Their music has influenced many other kinds of music, like classical and jazz. Roma don’t

usually assimilate(同化)into host countries. Over many centuries, governments have forbidden them to marry each other, travel or wear their traditional bright clothes. They have their gold taken away from them-treasures from their parents and grandparents. They have been taken as slaves(奴隶), and have been forced to change their names.

But today, the Roma are finding ways to live in peace with others while keeping the treasures of their culture. “There is a will within us to continue to live as a people,” says George Kaslov, whose family arrived in New York from Russia a hundred years ago. “All the other ethnic(种族) groups who came to America assimilate gradually with time going; they lose their customs and language. A new report shows what life might be like in 100 years from now. It describes skyscrapers that are much taller than today’s buildings, underwater ‘bubble’ cities and holidays in space. The report is from a company. It asked experts on space and architecture, as well as city planners, to give their ideas on the life in 2116. They said the way we live, work and play will be totally different to how we do these things today. The experts used the Internet as an example. They said that 25 years ago, people could not imagine how the Internet and smartphones would change our lives. The Internet has completely changed the way we communicate, learn and do daily things. The experts said the changes in the next century would be even more unbelievable.

Researchers questioned 2,000 adults about the prediction(预言) they thought were most likely to happen in the future. They predicted that in the future, few people will go to an office but will work from home and have work meetings online. People will have highly developed 3-D printers that will let you download a design for furniture or a food recipe and then ‘print’ the sofa, table or pizza at home. There will also be less need for visits to the doctor. We will all have a home health instrument that will tell us what

the problem is and give us treatment. We will also be going into space for holidays and to get resources that we have used up on Earth. A prediction that is missing is whether people will need to study English.

(1) The writer uses the example of the Internet in Paragraph 1 to show _________________ .

B. the Internet has developed fast

C. people will not believe the changes

D. technology will change people’s lives

Believe it or not, one-sixth of the world’s population depends on the snow that melts on mountains for its fresh water. That is more than one billion people! But we don’t know how much water is actually locked up in the world’s snowy mountains. In the past we have just guessed.

A NASA-led experiment called SnowEx is trying to find a real answer by using sensors (传感器) to monitor snow from satellites Last month, five SnowEX aircraft took 10 sensors and scanned (扫描)mountains in western Colorado, the US.

The key to working out how much water will pour out of mountain snow is a measurement(测量方法)called snow water equivalent(SWE,雪水当量) The global average is 30 percent of snow depth, Ed Kim, SnowEx?s lead scientist said. In other words, 25 cm of snow melts down to 8 cm of water.

But the mountain snow can be very different, making measurement difficult. There is shallow and deep snow. Sometimes snow hides under thick forests. Sometimes snow melts and water will flow through it.

NO single sensor can deal with all the conditions .

That?s why SnowEx is usin g a combination (组合)of sensors. Each sensor has its strength. Some can see through clouds and darkness. Some see through forests. Some are especially for shallow or deep snow. Together, they will collect data of the snow?s depth, density(密度) and temperature.

Scientists will then use a computer to read the data and find a better SWE measurement.

“We?ve never before had the opportunity to combine these specific sensors in one experiment, ”said Dorothy Hall, a SnowEx scientist. The experiment is very important for understanding and managing the world?s fresh water resources.

(1) What is SnowEx trying to do?

A. Learn about how fast snow melts on mountains.

B. Figure out how much fresh water people need in a year.

C. Explore more fresh water resources in the world.

D. Find out the amount of fresh water in snowy mountains.

(2) How do the sensors work?

A. They are used in a NASA lab.

B. Scientists take them to the mountains.

C. They are carried by SnowEx aircraft.

D. They are put somewhere in the mountains.

(3) According to SWE,__________________________________.

A. 100 cm of snow can melt down to about 30cm of water

B. 30cm of snow can melt down to 100cm of water

C. the mountain snow is not difficult to measure

D. the mountain snow has more water than the ocean

(4) What does Paragraph 6 mainly talk about?

A. How to make different sensors work together.

B. How to use different sensors to get more accurate data.

C. It?s the first time sensors have been used to predict the SWE
