二、阅读理解

On Friday, June 20th, 29 dogs along with their owners came to Santa Rosa, California. They came there to take part in an unusual competition—one that seeks out and honors the World’s Ugliest Dog. Now in its 26th y ear, the competition is one of the biggest attractions at the annual Sonoma County Fair.

Among the leading competitors were Cupcake, who was adopted (收养) from a local dog rescue center in January and Shorty, who would have been put to sleep if its owner, J ason, wasn’t kind enough to pick it up. Also competing was 11-year-old veteran Grovie. Described by his owner as short and funny, the Chinese pug is a local resident who has taken part in this contest several times. Then there was 2002 “World’s Ugliest Dog” and “Ring of Champions” winner, Rascal. The 7lbs naturally hairless dog with very few teeth comes from an impressive background (背景). His grandfather, Chi Chi, holds the Guinness World Record for winning the title “World’s Ugliest Dog” seven times!

But all these impress ively “ugly” dogs had no chance agai nst Peanut. The two-year-old dog was badly burnt in a fire which caused him to lose his lips, most of his body hair and eyelids. Besides winning the title, $1,500 USD in cash and a large trophy (奖杯), the first time winner also enjoyed an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City where he made scheduled appearances on the Today Show and the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

The competition is a great way to honor these dogs, many of whom get their unusual looks because of human abuse (虐待). But most importantly, it raises awareness about their adoption by showing the world that ugliness does not prevent dogs from becoming very loving pets.

C. The dogs that have unusual skills.

D. di dn’t want Shorty to be killed

13.What can we learn from Rascal’s impressive background?

A. He comes from a family of ugly dogs.

B. Most of his family members are well-known.

C. His grandfather had won the competition seven times.

D. Seven of his family members had won the competition.

14. According to the last paragraph, the competition wants to .

A. show that not all people are kind to dogs

B. call on people to adopt ugly dogs

C. tell people that loving pets usually don’t look good

D. warn people not to judge dogs by appearances

At just six years old, Joey Kilpatrick is Australia’s unofficial hide-and-seek(捉迷藏)champion after he hid in a bedroom cupboard for eight hours while playing his favorite game, causing a big rescue o peration.

The determined little boy’s disappearing act led to a careful search, including nice police officers, five State Emergency Service volunteers, tracker dogs and almost all of the people of the town of Goombungee.

His mother, Chris, says she called the police when Joey disappeared one afternoon after telling his older brother, Lachlan, 14, that he was off to play hide-and-seek. “I called the two boys for dinner,” Chris says. “Af ter about 20 minutes I started

But there was no sign of her little boy. Within minutes of Chris calling the police, the policemen started one of the biggest ground searches in th e town’s history.

Senior officer, Chris Brameld, from Goombungee police, says he is glad that Joey’s game had a happy ending: “When we realized he was safe, we agreed that it didn’t get much better than that!”

And young Joey promises that next time he won’t be so intent(专注于) on finding the best hiding place. “I w ant to say sorry to the policemen and to Mummy for scaring them,” he says, “I promise next time I’ll hide where they can find me and I won’t fall asleep!”

If man’s best friend is a dog, then who is a dog’s best friend? That would be Rover, Glow, Ivan or Raina. They recent ly donated (捐赠) blood to other dogs. And they did it without having to travel far from home: they visited an animal bloodmobile. Like the Red Cross vehicles for humans, the University of Pen nsylvania’s traveling vet lab goes to where the donors are to make it easier to give. The bloodmobile makes weekly rounds through Philadelphia and New Jersey.

Like humans, not every dog is qualified(合格的) to donate blood. The dogs are examined for health first. Dogs must have the correct blood type, weigh at least 55 pounds and be under 8 year old. About 150 dogs take part in the program. Each donates three or four pints(品脱) a year, which can help animals suffering from illness like cancer or an accident like being hit by a car.

Sandy Lucas brought her 7-year-old dog, Raina, to the bloodmobile last week. She said she wouldn’t have taken the dog to Penn Vet’s animal hospital in downtown Philadelphia, which is twice as far from her home. “I was very, very excited that she had the right blood that was needed to help another dog out,” said Lucas. “We’ll surely do it again.”

Just like people, the donors get a snack and a heart-shaped sticker immediately after giving. What’s more, they receive dog food to take h ome.

If dogs are doing what they can to save other dogs, why can’t we do it to save other

people? Next time you hesitate(犹豫) over whether to donate blood or not, think of the dogs.

19.The writer mentions Rover, Glow, Ivan and Raina in Para. 1 mainly because _________.

A. Sandy Lucas is unwilling to let her dog donate blood.

B. The bloodmobile welcomes dogs from anywhere in the city.

C. Penn Vet’s animal hospital in downtown Philadelphia is popular.

D. The animal bloodmobile has made it easier for dogs to donate blood.

Teenagers today live in a very competitive world. It is more important than ever to succeed at school if you hope to have a chance in the job market afterwards. It’s no wonder that many y oung people worry about letting down their parents, their classmates and themselves. But caffeine is a drug which can become addictive (上瘾). In the en d, like other drugs, caffeine only leads to more stress. A better way to deal with stress is to exercise. Research has proved that physical exercise is a good release for stress, because it increases certain chemicals in the brain which calm you down. Making sure you get enough sleep is also an important way of avoiding stress and of staying healthy and full of energy.

Another way to avoid stress is to manage your time effectively. It is better to do a few tasks really well than lots of tasks badly. Know your limits and try not to take on too much. Finally, if it all gets beyond your control, don’t panic or get hysterical (歇斯底里). Find the time to sit down quietly and breathe deeply for ten to twenty minutes. Do this regularly, and it will help you calm down.
