The part of the environmental movement that draws my firm's attention is the design of cities, buildings and products. When we designed America's first so-called "green" office building in New York two decades ___36___, we felt that we were alone. But today, thousands of people come to green building conferences, and the ___37___that buildings can be good for people and the environment will be increasingly influential in years to __38__ .

Back in 1984, we discovered that most products for decoration weren’t designed for __39__use. The “energy-efficient” commercial buildings constructed after the 1970s ___40___crisis showed indoor air quality problems caused by materials such as paint, wall

covering and carpet. So far 20 years, we’ve been ___41___ on these materials down to the molecules(分子), looking for ways to make them ___42___for people and the planet.

Home builders can now use materials—such as paints that release(释放)significantly ___43___amounts of organic compounds(有机化合物) —that don’t ___44___ the quality of the air, water, or soil. Eventually, ___45___, our basic design strategy is focused not simply on being “less bad” but on creating ___46___ healthful materials that can be either safely returned to the soil ___47___ reused by industry again and again. As a matter of ___48___, the world’s largest carpet manufacturer has already ___49___ a carpet that is fully and safely recyclable.

Look at it this way: No one ___50___ out to create a building that destroys the planet. But our ___51___ industrial systems are inevitably(不可避免地) causing these conditions, whether we like it or not. So ___52___ of simply trying to reduce the damage, we are ___53___ a positive approach. We’re giving people high-quality, healthful products and an opportunity to make choices that have a ___54___ effect on the world. It’s not just the building industry, either. Entire cities are taking these ___55___ positive approaches to design, planning and building. Portland, Seattle and Boston have said they want to be green cities. Chicago wants to be the greenest city in the world.

第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

World-famous violinist Itzhak Perlman was stricken with polio (小儿麻痹)as a child. As a result, he wears races (辊道、轮槽)on both legs and walks with the aid of crutches(拐杖). At concerts, getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He slowly crosses the stage until he reaches his chair. He lays his crutches on the floor, slowly undoes the clasps(扣环)on his legs, puts one foot backward and extends the other one forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin(下巴), nods to the conductor, and starts to play.

One fall evening in 1995, while performing at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City, Perlman had to deal with one additional trouble. Jack Reimer, a famous reporter with the Houston Chronicle, described the scene. “Just as he finished the first few bars(高低音), one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear the sound go off like gunfire across the room.

There was no mistak ing what that sound meant.”

There was no mistaking what he had to do. People who were there said, “We figured he would have to get up...to either find another violin or find another string for this one.”

But he didn’t. Instead he waited a moment, c losed his eyes, and then signaled the conductor to begin again .The band and he played from where he had left off. He played with enthusiasm and power.

Of course, it is important to play a symphonic work with just three strings. But that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. You could see him modulate(调音), change, recompose the piece in his head. At one point, it sounded like he was turning the strings to get new sounds they had never made before.

56.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?

A. It’s a piece of cake for Perlman to perform on the stage.

B.It’s not easy for Perlman to get on the stage.

C. Perlman has achieved great success on the stage.

D. Perlman has small achievements on the stage.

57. How did the string break?

A. It only broke by accident.

B. Perlman broke the string because he was too excited.

C.A gunfire from somewhere in the room broke it.

D. It was broken by the few bars.

58. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that Perlman_______.

A. pretended not to known that the string was broken.

B. thought nothing was impossible

C. was a very proud man

D. showed his self-confidence in time of trouble

B

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive(欺骗)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.

For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery(彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”

This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $ 200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!

He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Some politicians often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents says, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.’’

Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.”It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.

This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

59. We may infer that the author believes people should ________.

A. buy lottery tickets if possible

B. make use of half-truths

C. be careful about what they are told

D. not trust the Yucky Company

60. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Using half truths is against the law.

B. Technically, half truths are in fact lies.

C. Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.

D. Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.

61. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?

A. He’s really a big loser!

B. Sometimes the truth can lie as well.

C. Advertisers will sometimes use half truths.

D. It’s against the law to make false statements.

Dave Bruno works as an online marketing manager. Several years ago, one weekend Bruno and his family did a major house cleanup and then donated several bags of unneeded items to the local Goodwill store. “After all were done, I looked around and realized that I still ha d too much stuff”,says Bruno, “It occurred to me that maybe I wanted to lead a simple life but in reality I behaved differently.” That realization prompted the 39-year-old father of three to try an experiment, “The 100 Thing Challenge(挑战)”.

With the goal of breaking free of what he calls a “bad habit of consumerism”,Bruno was determined to live for one year with just 100 personal items. He cut down his possessions to 94 items, including a Bible, laptop, guitar, wedding ring, car and clothes. He created some guidelines for the experiment since his wife and daughters did not join in family-shared and household items did not count as personal items. He also grouped together some basic things such as underwear and socks. Bruno began blogging about his new lifestyle and eventually wrote a book, The 100 Thing Challenge: How I Got Rid of Almost Everything, Remade My Life, and Regained My Soul.

Since completing the experiment, Bruno has continued to live by the motto: reduce, refuse, and rearrange and maintains just 110 personal things. “ Nearly three years of living with a minimal (最少的)amount of personal possessions, I’m no longer in the habit of consuming (消费) for the sake of consumption,” he wrote in his blog last week, “That has freed me up for all sorts of better endeavors than shopping—like spending time with family and writing a book and planning for business opportunities.”

Bruno’s project has also inspired others to live minimally, many of whom post their own 100 Thing Challenge updates on YouTube. “The reality is that t he 100 Thing Challenge is surprisingly easy”says Bruno, “I’m not saying there were no challenges or disappointments. I miss some things, but not that much. Frankly, it’s far easier to live with less stuff than with excessive trash.”

62.What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 1?

A. Bruno regretted to have an easy life.

B. Bruno had a special behavior in reality.

C. Bruno and his family led a happy life.

D. Bruno would have liked a life with fewer items.

63.The things were included in Bruno’s 94 items EXCEPT _____.

A. socks

B. a Bible

C. cookers

D. a wedding ring

64. It can be inferred in the last paragraph that _____.

A. it is less possible for people to live simply.

B. Bruno met some difficulties in the experiment.

C. many people were inspired to update their blogs.

D. The reality is that the 100 Thing Challenge is surprisingly easy.

65. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Bruno hasn’t blogged for a long time.

B. Unneeded things should be thrown away.

C. Bruno has succeeded in the experiment.

D. The family show interest in the experiment.

66. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Live with 100 Things

B. Defeat 100 Challenges in Life

C. Survive by Your Motto

D. Consume for Consumption’s Sake

(D)

Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, “In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but t he terrible reality of violence”. Given that this is the case, why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit?

First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem i sn’t in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.

Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution(解决) : stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down, as rude words, name-calling, and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.

After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy(策略) for conflict resolution : listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles.

Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. Quarrel s don’t mean trying to figure out what’s wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn’t, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution.

There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student co-operation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.

67. This article is mainly about _____________.

A. how to deal with school conflicts

B. the cause of arguments in schools

C. how to analyze youth violence

D. the lives of school children

68. Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5?

A. To find out who is to blame.

B. To get ready to try new things.

C. To make clear what the real issue is.

D. To figure out how to stop the shouting match.

69. After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta, it was found that _______.

A. there was a decrease in classroom violence

B. there was less student cooperation in the classroom

C. more teachers felt better about themselves in schools

D. the teacher-student relationship greatly improved

70. The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to ________.

A. complain about problems in school education

B. teach students different strategies for school life

C. recommend teaching conflict management in schools

D. inform teachers of the latest studies on school violence

第一部分:任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)

4 Reasons Why Fad (风靡一时的) Diets are Bad for You

A quick weight loss program sounds like a good idea at the time, but you’ll soon discover that fad diets can be more dangerous to your health than beneficial to it. Here are four reasons why fad diets are bad for you, plus tips on how to create a diet plan that helps you lose the extra pounds safely — and keep them off.

1. You’ll Wind Up Feeling Dehydrated (脱水的)

Most of the weight you drop when you lose weight too quickly tends to be water weight, which can lead to rapid dehydration. Your body burns calories and excess (过量的) weight in stages, and if you force your body to lose weight faster than it naturally wants to, you can cause serious health problems for yourself.

Tip: When trying to lose weight, remind yourself that water is your friend. To keep from overeating and to stay properly hydrated (含水的), drink one to two glasses before a meal. Also, if you exercise daily, be sure to increase your water intake in order to counteract (抵消,中和) the water lost from sweating (出汗) while working out.

2. You’ll Get Tired Quickly

Fad diets involve depriving (剥夺) yourself of calories, however, calories are what translate into the energy your body needs to get through the day. If you eat fast or eat less than what your body requires in order to lose weight too quickly, you’ll find yourself feeling tired for most of the day.

Tip: Eat smaller meals throughout the day. This will help to boost (促进) your metabolism (新陈代谢), and can provide you with more energy to help you lose weight in a healthy manner. 3. You Can Get Serious Digestive (消化的) Problems

In actual fact, losing weight too quickly can lead to severe diarrhea (腹泻), to be followed later by constipation (便秘). As with losing water weight, having diarrhea over an extended period of time can lead to dehydration (脱水) — a condition that can be life-threatening.

Tip: Ensure that you have a diet which is rich in fibre (纤维).

4. You’ll Suffer from Malnutrition (营养不良)

Crash diets and fasting are dangerous because they restrict (限制) you from consuming (消耗) fats and carbs (碳水化合物), but they’re also unsafe since they prevent your body from getting the vitamins and minerals it needs. If you restrict your body from its normal caloric intake over a long period of time, your body will be deprived (使丧失) of important nutrients (营养) and you’ll become malnourished.

Tip: A healthy, well-balanced diet is the key to proper weight loss. Talk to your doctor about

dietary supplements (补充物) if you are con cerned about the amount of nutrients you’re getting.
